Berkshire began investing in BYD in 2008, snapping up 225 mn shares for USD 230 mn. The company also acquired a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c1b11e94-533d-4af4-984c-ed48fd056c83\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">majority 51% +1 stake<\/a> in Fertiglobe from OCI to expand its global ammonia production network and signed an MoU with OCI to explore importing and distributing ammonia in the EU at the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But will the ammonia industry meet its goals? <\/strong>It is unclear whether ammonia production will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e040ce54-895c-4175-addb-541ce5b2eeda\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">meet forecasts<\/a> by 2027, meaning that the increased supply of ammonia fuel carriers may be in excess. These batteries store energy from solar panels or wind turbines and utilize an electrochemical reaction that incorporates CO2 from industrial emissions into valuable byproducts that can be used in other manufacturing processes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">How it works: <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The batteries function by moving ions between two electrodes in a saltwater electrolyte \u2014 a liquid that electricity can go through, or that separates into separate ions when electricity goes through it. Unlike portable batteries found in cars or cell phones, grid batteries function as an open system, meaning that CO2 generated from a fossil-fuel power plant could be pumped through a tube into the battery\u2019s liquid electrolyte, which will then turn into a solid, usable powder once the battery is in operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The researchers tested two different types of CO2 batteries:<\/strong> The ORNL team has formulated two different battery types that solidify CO2 gas into functional materials: one combines CO2 with sodium from saltwater using an inexpensive iron-nickel catalyst (Na-CO2 battery), while the second combines the gas with aluminum (Al-CO2 battery). The Al-CO2 battery however, operates in a single chamber, which easily facilitates ion movement and enhances efficiency. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But it wasn\u2019t easy: <\/strong>Because the electrodes in the Na-CO2 must be separated in wet and dry chambers with a solid ion conductor between them, the barrier slows the movement of ions, which in turn slows down battery operation and reduces battery efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not the first to do it:<\/strong> Researchers at the University of Surrey, Imperial College London, and Peking University also developed carbon capture batteries, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/6\/878.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study (pdf)<\/a> published in the Energy and Environmental Science Journal. The research team created an advanced electrochemical testing platform that streamlines the production of catalysts for lithium-CO2 (Li-CO2) batteries, overcoming the slow and ineffective methods that have hindered market feasibility.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How is their method different?<\/strong> Using a lab-on-a-chip, the platform performs multiple tasks, including evaluating electrocatalysts, optimizing operational conditions, and examining CO2 conversion in Li-CO2 batteries. This approach is more cost-effective and manageable than traditional methods. The study tested various substances like platinum, gold, and nickel, aiming to establish high-performance Li-CO2 batteries. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Others are developing similar tech: <\/strong>Italian battery startup <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/energydome.com\/co2-battery\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy Dome\u2019s CO2 battery<\/a> also uses CO2 for long-duration energy storage. The technology operates on closed cyclic thermodynamic transformations of CO2. During the charging process, the CO2 battery uses renewable energy to power a compressor that compresses gaseous CO2 stored in a casing at ambient temperature and pressure. This process transforms the CO2 into a liquid, which is stored under pressure.
