2033, following an auction<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^ We have the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- COP29 host Azerbaijan is launching a<\/strong><strong> fund to raise at least USD 500 mn in climate finance<\/strong> for poorer countries with a contribution from the state owned oil company Socar, a senior COP29 official said. The fund is set up for fossil fuel companies to contribute through lump sums or portions of revenue, and any returns made on the investments will be funneled back into the fund. The country is still in talks on whether 50% of the capital should be allocated for developing countries impacted by severe weather events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s next: <\/strong>\u201cWe will, once the concept is ready, reach out to the parties we think could be potential contributors. It's also mulling over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1419c306-dec9-4a0d-92eb-9810a3397435\/today:-ceer-inks-major-supply-agreement-with-hyundai-%2B-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-tenderd-closes-series-a-funding-round\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">extending a USD 71.7 mn senior loan<\/a> to finance a 200 MW, USD 214.8 mn wind farm in Egypt\u2019s Ras Ghareb developed and operated by the UAE\u2019s Masdar and Egypt\u2019s Infinity Energy. Hassan Allam Utilities (HAU) subsidiary HAU Energy BV is also expected to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c827e2dd-f9be-4e4a-8657-a694680d5764\/hassan-allam-utilities-teams-up-with%253cmark%253e-ebrd%253c%2Fmark%253e-%2B-meridiam-to-expand-renewables-projects\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">get USD 75 mn<\/a> from the EBRD for local renewable energy projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- <\/strong><strong>Germany <\/strong><strong>is set to abstain from the upcoming vote by EU member states on imposing<\/strong><strong> provisional tariffs on EVs imported from China<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/germany-set-abstain-vote-eu-tariffs-chinese-evs-sources-2024-07-12\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported on Friday. While the provisional tariffs do not require member states\u2019 approval, the final tariffs could be blocked if a qualified majority opposes them. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- The EU has been putting pressure on Chinese imports:<\/strong> The EU <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/9822c88d-307b-46f7-9288-d5afdf64d4c5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">launched a probe<\/a> last year into Chinese subsidies for EVs in efforts to ward off a flood of cheap imports, claiming prices were being kept \u201cartificially low.\u201d The EU also recently officially imposed tariffs of 17.4% to 37.6% on Chinese electric vehicle imports. Tariffs are on provisional status for the next four months before becoming \u201cdefinite\u201d as the talks between both sides continue and the EU anti-subsidy investigation continues. In response, China\u2019s Commerce Ministry launched a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3162a2d3-16cc-4e72-9c22-2ad2aba18f53\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">formal trade and investment barrier investigation<\/a> into the probe to evaluate whether they constitute a trade barrier. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt4\"><\/a> <strong>#5- World\u2019s energy transition will be \u201cdisorderly,\u201d warns BP: <\/strong>The world is transitioning away from fossil fuels too slowly, with fossil fuel consumption still breaking records and oil demand rising as countries operate in an \u201cenergy addition\u201d phase rather than \u201csubstitution\u201d phase, according to British oil firm BP\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/7\/1029.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Energy Outlook (pdf)<\/a>. CEO Murray Auchincloss expressed his intention to slow down large low carbon investments that are \u201cnot expected to be profitable for years.\u201d The firm also imposed a company-wide hiring freeze. Teams previously working on identifying new renewables opportunities have been reassigned to older projects and some job cuts are to be expected. BP\u2019s EV charging business BP Pulse has already laid off over 10% of its workforce and pulled out of several markets.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- Irena is in agreement:<\/strong> The world\u2019s renewables growth rate is inadequate to meet the 2030 target of tripling renewables capacity to 11 TW, a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/7\/1022.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) found. While 473 GW of renewables capacity was added last year \u2014 representing a 14% increase and the largest annual growth since 2000 \u2014 the world would still be 1.5 TW short of its goal by 2030 if the trend continues. The record increase brings the compound annual growth rate between 2017-2023 to 10%, which if maintained as the annual growth rate would accumulate only 7.5 TW of renewables capacity by 2030. Waste and recycling are also promising as currently only 10% of plastic and metal waste is recycled in the GCC.
