Over 80 climate nonprofits \u2014 including ClientEarth, ShareAction, Oxfam, Amnesty International, and Greenpeace have come together to warn against the use of carbon credits as a tool to offset their emissions. The group claims that carbon offsets \u201cslow down global emission reductions while failing to provide anything like the scale of funds needed in the Global South,\u201d and hinder \u201cpressure to develop large-scale mechanisms such as \u2018polluter pays\u2019 fees on emission-intensive sectors.\u201d <strong>The story grabbed ink in <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-02\/carbon-credits-face-fresh-blowback-as-ngos-unite-to-slam-offsets?srnd=green\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-charities-say-using-companies-carbon-offsets-to-lower-emissions-undermines-climate-targets-b281a097\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>#1- <\/strong><strong>Morocco <\/strong><strong>is set to quadruple its investments in renewable energy from USD 400 <\/strong><strong>mn in 2024 to USD 1.5 bn by 2027,<\/strong> Energy and Sustainable Development Minister Leila Benali said during a parliamentary session (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1485882118801962&amp;rdid=i1TUTdqemPrukpZA\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">watchtime: 1:47<\/a>). Morocco will also add around 7.5 GW of renewable energy by 2027, excluding green hydrogen and desalination projects. Morocco also aims to invest USD 3 bn by 2027 to boost its transmission grid.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Morocco is making strides in green energy: <\/strong> Morocco was included in the ten African countries that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1419c306-dec9-4a0d-92eb-9810a3397435\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">added the most hydropower<\/a> in 2023, adding 1.77 GW. The Morocco-UK <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ec98e38c-4d85-4999-ba4a-2e47f181b20b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Xlinx interconnector project<\/a> is also underway to transport 3.6 GW of renewable energy \u2014 nearly 8% of the UK\u2019s current requirements \u2014 from a 10.5 GW solar and wind farm in Morocco\u2019s Guelmim-Oued Noun region to Britain\u2019s power grid in Devon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- <\/strong><strong>Dubai targets demand-side electricity consumption: <\/strong>Dubai\u2019s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum issued an order to update Dubai\u2019s Demand Side Management Strategy 2050, which aims to achieve energy efficiency by managing demand for electricity, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mediaoffice.ae\/en\/news\/2024\/july\/02-07\/dubai-demand-side-management-strategy-2050\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In numbers:<\/strong> The updated strategy aims to save at least 86.8 Terawatt Hours (TWh) of electricity, 383.2 bn imperial gallons of water, and around 1.8 bn liters of transport fuel by 2050. It also includes 12 programs that cover net zero buildings, consumer behavior, water recycling, mobility, fuel, cooling, and lighting efficiency, among others.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- Egypt\u2019s Dabaa nuclear plant receives core catcher:<\/strong> The third unit of Egypt\u2019s 4.8 GW Dabaa nuclear power plant has received its reactor core catcher, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid0To1N4VsHXjhWJNwcnQXUi68YtRLNFB4m91Y85R2GX1dkCPmMXy45azzNF5F2ygM8l\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The equipment \u2014 which arrived in three components by ship \u2014 is expected to be installed in October. Core catchers are installed for safety under reactor vessels to catch melted core material and cool it. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Egypt broke ground on the reactor at the start of the year: <\/strong>Egypt kicked off construction on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dea47c93-5840-490e-b540-d5a18df10b93\/today:-a-new-uae-ev-manufacturing-facility-%2B-aramco-ramps-up-decarbonization-efforts\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fourth and final reactor<\/a> of the 4.8 GW Dabaa nuclear power plant in January. Construction is set to be completed by 2028. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- Renault wants to decrease EV battery costs: <\/strong>French automaker Renault \u2014 through its EV subsidiary Ampere \u2014 will reduce its battery costs by around 20% by integrating <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7d360481-d199-4e0f-8654-e389c9e30bc5\/technical-faults-in-wind-turbines-manufactured-by-siemens-gamesa-to-cost-over-eur-1-bn\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">lithium iron phosphate<\/a> (LFP) cells with its current nickel cobalt manganese batteries, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-01\/renault-vows-to-lower-ev-battery-costs-20-with-cheaper-process?ref=biztoc.com\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The cheaper batteries will supply their vehicles starting in 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There\u2019s more:<\/strong> Ampere is collaborating with South Korea\u2019s LG Energy Solution to extend the driving range of their cars and Renault is working on establishing a European value chain that would see LFP cells from Hungary provided by China\u2019s Contemporary Amperex Technology and cell-to-pack technology from Poland from LG Energy as other Ampere partners operate in France. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why does this matter? <\/strong>The move to improve profit margins is important in a slowing industry struggling to compete with China\u2019s cheaper product.
