We have chapter and verse on the developments in the news well below. But first, an update from IEA on the global renewable scorecard\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>The world is off track to triple renewable energy goals by 2030, IEA says: <\/strong>The world is falling short on achieving its goal to triple renewable energy output by 2030, missing the mark by nearly a third, according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/6\/320.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Current efforts to scale up renewable energy capacity are projected to reach nearly 8 TW worldwide by 2030, 3 TW away from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/eab3f3ff-ace7-4e41-b082-45a0d91fe1fe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">pledge made by 116 states<\/a> during COP28. IEA\u2019s predictions are based on an analysis of the plans and policies of almost 150 countries. China alone is responsible for almost half of the IEA\u2019s estimated total. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s behind the delay?<\/strong> Challenges delaying additional renewable capacity include long wait times for acquiring permits, lack of investments in grid infrastructure, high costs for financing, and the ability to integrate variable renewables quickly and cost- effectively. Additionally, only 14 out of 194 countries have submitted their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) \u2014 which outline explicit climate targets for 2030 \u2014 despite a nearing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/nationally-determined-contributions-ndcs\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">deadline<\/a> under the Paris Agreements to submit the plans in 2025. The venture previously <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/71017814-88a9-452e-870e-3bae48d2dd38\/loss-and-damage-agreement-finalized-%2B-uae-launches-usd-30-bn%253cmark%253e-alterra%253c%2Fmark%253e-climate-accelerator\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">aimed to mobilize USD 250 bn<\/a> in green investments by 2030. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The UAE launched the USD 30 bn \u201ccatalytic climate vehicle\u201d in December 2023 to improve access to climate funding for the Global South. Alterra\u2019s initial commitment \u2014 along with BlackRock, Brookfield, and TPG \u2014 was USD 6.5 bn to climate-dedicated funds. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And has made new partnerships since: <\/strong>Global Climate Finance Centre (GCFC) and Alterra <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a1d0da1c-8b2e-47b8-afbb-de4fb0cb4d39\/alkhorayef-to-develop-and-rehabilitate-four-sewage-treatment-plants\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">joined forces in April<\/a> to increase climate investments in emerging and developing economies. The investments will focus on furthering low carbon, sustainable, and climate resilient projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#2- <\/strong><strong>Aramco <\/strong><strong>sets sustainability targets in new report: <\/strong>Saudi\u2019s oil giant Aramco has set out to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 15% by 2035 \u2014 to offset 52 mn metric tons of CO2 \u2014 and reach net zero emissions by 2050, according to their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/6\/337.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Sustainability Report (pdf)<\/a>. The company also aims to store around 14 mn metric tons of CO2 per year from carbon capture and storage projects by 2035, and plans to have a 12 GW portfolio of solar and wind projects up and running by the end of the decade. The oil giant\u2019s outlook also includes investing in planting mangroves inside and outside Saudi and investing in carbon credits to address hard-to-abate emissions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Aramco is upping its decarbonization efforts: <\/strong>The oil giant <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/07073c12-f4b3-43dc-82f4-d3def8da7f18\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked three MoUs<\/a> with US companies to develop lower-carbon energy solutions last month. These included an agreement to reduce emissions and energy efficiency, an agreement to explore investing in direct air capture, and an agreement to explore using heat batteries in Aramco\u2019s facilities overseas. Aramco's USD 4 bn venture capital arm Aramco Ventures participated in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1a6539b4-9a45-428a-98fb-195caca4c083\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 80 mn funding round<\/a> for US-based climate tech company CarbonCapture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">COP WATCH- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>COP28 <\/strong><strong>president calls for faster AI integration:<\/strong> COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber has called for a global push to integrate AI into the green transition to expedite sustainable development, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/article\/b3hvd98-cop28-presidency-calls-for-global-effort-leverage\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wam<\/a> reports. Foreign investments played a substantial role in the country's energy sector, with energy efficiency strategies propelling sectors like transport, construction, and industry towards sustainability and pollution reduction.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The kingdom is on the right track:<\/strong> Morocco\u2019s planned renewables projects are set to turn the country into a major green energy exporter in the next decade, the report concludes, adding that the country\u2019s new development strategy \u2014 expected to materialize by 2035 \u2014 is creating a strong incentive to improve the country\u2019s energy performance. Morocco possesses the qualifications to contribute to the EU\u2019s plans to import 40 GW of renewable energy by 2050.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- World \u201cfailing to address the climate crisis,\u201d EPI finds:<\/strong> The world is failing to effectively stop ecosystem loss and mitigate practices that are threatening the environment, according to the latest Environmental Performance Index (EPI) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/6\/347.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a>. The planet's life supporting systems are facing degradation due to continued reliance on fossil fuels, leading to pollution and rising levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the study concluded. The Greater Middle East region had the second lowest score based on region, receiving a median score of 43.2 in the index, a slight increase from 35 recorded in 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What indicators are being studied? <\/strong>The report used 58 indicators to rank nations according to their progress in mitigating climate change, protecting the ecosystem, and promoting environmental health. Countries are given a score from 0-100, with 0 being the worst and 100 the best. Index indicators included projected emissions, public health impacts of exposure to ground-level ozone, and unsafe drinking water levels, amongst others. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>UAE + Oman are making progress:<\/strong> The UAE ranked first in the region with a score of 52, with Oman right behind it at a median of 51.9. Both countries have extensive protected areas and have made significant strides in environmental management. The UAE leads in wastewater treatment and biodiversity, while Oman has banned <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msc.org\/what-we-are-doing\/our-approach\/fishing-methods-and-gear-types\/demersal-or-bottom-trawls#:~:text=Bottom%20%2D%20or%20demersal%20%2D%20trawling%20is,end)%20that%20holds%20the%20catch.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">bottom trawling<\/a>. Oman made significant progress, moving 99 places to reach the 50th position, up from the 149th position in 2022.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>While Iraq pulls down our average:<\/strong> Iraq ranked last in the region at 30.4, with low scores in biodiversity and habitat due to minimal protected areas, degraded ecosystems, and a high extinction risk for species. Iraq's heavy reliance on oil and gas has led to a 35% increase in GHG emissions over the past decade. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Extreme weather is raising the crisis level of hunger amongst children: <\/strong>The number of children facing severe hunger in countries most affected by extreme weather has more than doubled in the past five years, with a 20% increase in 2023 alone, according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.net\/news\/bonn-conference-number-children-crisis-levels-hunger-due-extreme-weather-events-doubles-past\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">analysis<\/a> by Save the Children. Over 33 mn children and 39 mn adults are in \u201ccrisis\u201d hunger phases in 18 countries where extreme weather is a primary driver of food insecurity. The solar projects are scheduled for operation between end of 2026 to early 2027, while the wind facility is set to start operations by the end of 2027, Masdar's head of development and investment for the CIS region Maryam Al Mazrouei told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/business\/energy\/uaes-masdar-to-build-wind-solar-plants-in-azerbaijan-k2qwwr6b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This has been in the works: <\/strong>Masdar signed an agreement with Socar to develop renewables projects with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/349d9ac2-e114-453b-bccb-580c58f97b7f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a combined capacity of 4 GW<\/a> last year. These included the joint development of offshore wind energy and hydrogen projects with a capacity of 2 GW, solar PV projects with a capacity of 1 GW, and another 1 GW of onshore wind energy. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Masdar has other projects in Azerbaijan:<\/strong> Masdar launched the operations of its 230MW Garadagh Solar Park in Azerbaijan \u2014 the largest in the region and the first independent solar project to receive foreign investment \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5f6a8523-67f5-4e2b-ad8f-ba91f7c6c3c0\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last October<\/a>. Masdar and Saudi\u2019s Acwa Power also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/08ebc2d1-c075-4429-ba06-cac0c83681fc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an MoU<\/a> with Socar for 500 MW of renewable energy projects in the country. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region is deepening ties with Azerbaijan: <\/strong>The UAE and Azerbaijan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e25453f4-e607-43aa-b55f-ffbf4d3f0688\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed multiple agreements<\/a> for cooperation in sustainable development across the renewable energy and environmental sectors ahead of COP29 last January.
