Feasibility studies are already underway to implement Egypt's first SAF project using used cooking oil, and an executive committee will be formed to expedite its progress.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Sound familiar?<\/strong> Reports <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/0dfa93e5-11ed-4622-9127-3886dd872162\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">surfaced<\/a> last month stemming from unnamed sources claiming that state-owned firm Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) and state-owned Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemicals Company are looking into partnering with a local private-sector player to set up a USD 380 mn SAF project with an estimated production capacity of 120k tons a year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Egypt has recently begun exploring its SAF opportunities:<\/strong> The Egyptian Company for Solid Waste Recycling (ECARU), Qalaa Holdings, and France\u2019s Axens <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cf2552bd-bcaa-419e-9dfd-cd6df644151e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed a cooperation protocol<\/a> last July to conduct technical and economic studies for a second-generation biofuel and SAF production project. The US Commercial Service of the US Department of Commerce and the US Embassy in Cairo held a roundtable discussion attended by Enterprise Climate in June on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7e819bfd-fe2e-42ae-8b0a-4d46d730ce67\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">decarbonizing the aviation industry and growing the use of SAF<\/a> in Egypt and beyond. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- Dutch oil giant Shell may slow down the pace of its carbon emissions cuts in its <\/strong><strong>Energy Transition Strategy to-be released today, <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-12\/shell-considers-slowing-the-pace-of-its-carbon-emissions-cuts-in-strategy-update\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported, citing exclusive comments made by sources familiar with the matter. The strategy \u2014 which is updated every three years \u2014 may see the company allocate a greater portion of investments into oil and gas in order to give better returns to shareholders, a move which CEO Wael Sawan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a2aeaac4-848e-4370-987d-0273547a5359\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">has been championing<\/a> since he assumed the position <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f3893243-37ff-4303-8587-ff20b4371c46\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">early last year<\/a>. The publication \u201cwill contain details of our plans to become a net zero emissions energy business by 2050,\u201d a company spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Not the first European oil firm to backtrack on its climate targets: <\/strong>British global energy giant BP said last year it would pump more oil and gas and produce more CO2 emissions this decade than previously planned, the news outlet said. Some analysts said in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a92327e8-bf6c-41c1-bf01-0a1230b8080c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">October<\/a> that BP could be joining forces with Shell to add more reserves to their portfolios and capitalize on surging oil demand. BP <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2023\/02\/07\/bp-climate-emissions-oil-profits\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">walked away<\/a> from its target to reduce emissions by 35% by 2030 last year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Following in the US\u2019 footsteps:<\/strong> \u201cThe European supermajors have been trading at a consistent discount to their US peers, which have remained more firmly committed to fossil fuels,\u201d Bloomberg writes. European oil firms were ahead of their US equivalents in their climate targets in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/21\/business\/energy-environment\/oil-climate-change-us-europe.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last few years<\/a>, but have been slowly backtracking and showing reluctance to invest more ambitiously in the energy transition. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- The EU outlines a new plan to reduce climate risks: <\/strong>In response to the first-ever European Climate Risk Assessment published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0f174a04-ee7c-4784-b2ad-c2b131d6d82f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this week<\/a>, the EU Comissions has set out how the EU and its member states can implement policies to manage climate risks and \u201csave lives, cut costs, and protect prosperity,\u201d according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/news\/key-steps-manage-climate-risks-protect-people-and-prosperity-2024-03-12_en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The production and use of fossil fuels resulted in around 120 mn tons (Mt) of methane emissions in 2023, while a further 10 Mt came from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/energy-system\/renewables\/bioenergy\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">bioenergy<\/a> \u2014 energy produced from organic material known as biomass. This is around the same level of methane emissions since it peaked in 2019, which means that \u201coverall emissions remain far too high to meet the world\u2019s climate goals,\u201d the report concluded. The energy sector accounts for more than one third of total methane emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>The US is the biggest culprit, with Russia and China not far behind:<\/strong> The US is now the biggest source of methane emissions from oil and gas extraction globally, the report found. \u201cNow that the US is the world\u2019s largest producer of oil and gas, its industry must finally commit to near-zero methane emissions by the end of this decade,\u201d former Clinton White House climate adviser Paul Bledsoe said according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/mar\/13\/fossil-fuel-firms-must-plug-methane-leaks-to-meet-climate-targets-warns-watchdog\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a>. Russia came in second in methane emitted globally, and China in third, while also holding the rank of the biggest emitter of methane from coal mining, the report found. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Unnecessary leaks:<\/strong> Leaks from coal mines and oil and gas wells are the biggest sources of methane. Some countries scored more than 100x better than others with regards their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/news-and-insights\/reimagining-energy\/managing-methane-emissions-from-gas-production.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">methane emissions intensity<\/a> (or leakage) \u2014 a measurement of how well a facility performs as a ratio of methane released versus the total natural gas produced. Large methane emissions events detected by satellites also rose by more than 50% in 2023 compared to the year before, with more than 5 Mt of methane emissions detected from major fossil fuel leaks around the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>MENA fared well in terms of intensity performance:<\/strong> MENA and GCC countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iraq, and Algeria have relatively low emissions intensities while Turkmenistan and Venezuela hold the rank of worst offenders, the report states. The amount of methane lost in fossil fuel operations globally last year was 170 bn cubic meters, surpassing Qatar\u2019s natural gas production, the report stated. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>There\u2019s some good news:<\/strong> Since fossil fuel supply has continued to expand since then, this indicates that the average methane intensity of production globally has declined marginally during this period. more governments and fossil fuel companies have committed to take action on methane. Global efforts to report emissions estimates consistently and transparently are strengthening, and studies suggest emissions are falling in some regions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>So, what can be done?<\/strong> To successfully reach the global goal of net zero by 2050, USD 170 bn will need to be spent by 2030 to reduce global methane emissions by 75%, equivalent to about 5% of the profits made by fossil fuel firms last year. This is because all current methane policies and pledges made by countries and companies to date are not sufficient and would only reduce methane emissions from fossil fuels by around 50% by 2030. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>Methane abatement is the obvious place to start: <\/strong>Around 40% of the 120 Mt of methane emissions from fossil fuels could be avoided at no net cost given that the required expenses for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/fuels-and-technologies\/methane-abatement\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">abatement measures<\/a> \u2014 techniques that can be applied across oil and gas value chains to reduce emissions \u2014 are less than the market value of the additional methane gas captured and sold or used, the report finds. The abatement gains are higher for oil and natural gas (50%) compared to coal (15%).<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div
