USD 1-1.2 bn in climate finance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if separate negotiations translate into an agreement on the back of a freshly inked USD 8 bn program, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said at a press conference yesterday with Central Bank of Egypt Governor Hassan Abdalla and IMF mission chief for Egypt Ivanna Hollar (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ecKR5VA4YWE\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">watch, runtime: 18:13<\/a>). <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2024\/03\/06\/pr-2459-egypt-staff-and-authorities-reach-agreement-on-reviews-under-the-eff-arrangement\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">This agreement<\/a> is subject to approval by the IMF\u2019s executive board, which will meet to consider the pact before the end of the month, Hollar said at the presser.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>The agreement came together yesterday after Egypt\u2019s central bank <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ac569e2c-c6f2-480e-bdaa-3f1cd4f81d05\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">announced the float<\/a><\/strong><strong> of <\/strong><strong>the EGP and a jumbo rate hike.<\/strong> All of this was built on a pledge two weeks ago of up to USD 35 bn worth of investment from Abu Dhabi\u2019s ADQ, including some USD 24 bn in payments for the development rights to Ras El Hekma. The first payment from ADQ arrived in Egypt last week. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>As the IMF sees it: <\/strong>The expanded package \u201dseeks to preserve debt sustainability, restore price stability, and reinstate a well-functioning exchange rate system, while continuing to push forward deep structural reforms to promote private sector-led growth and job creation,\u201d Hollar said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>It should also open the door more for the private sector: <\/strong>The reforms are also aimed at \u201cfostering an environment that enables private sector activity,\u201d according to Hollar \u2014 a move that will create jobs and attract fresh investment. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>And there might be more to come: <\/strong>The agreement will be followed by more funding \u2014 in soft loans \u2014 from other international partners like the World Bank and EU, Madbouly added.
