has signed a Strategic Supply Partnership (SSP) with French shipping and logistics company CMA GGM to explore the feasibility of striking up a long-term green maritime fuels offtake agreement to supply CMA CGM vessels,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^ We have the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong><strong> No single story<\/strong><strong> is dominating the <\/strong><strong>headlines<\/strong>, but a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-30\/china-leads-global-clean-energy-spending-which-record-1-8-trillion-in-2023\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">BloombergNEF<\/a> (BNEF) report circulated yesterday indicates that while global clean energy investments rose 17% y-o-y to a record USD 1.8 tn in 2023, the financing is still far short of the USD 4.8 tn needed annually through to 2030 to scale up decarbonization technologies in order to meet Paris Agreement targets. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Behind the numbers: <\/strong>Bloomberg\u2019s figures account for funding channeled toward renewables and hydrogen production projects, and EV purchases and other decarbonization technologies, but do not factor in investments toward building clean energy supply chains (USD 900 bn last year). Although there were some improvements in 2023, including China\u2019s allocation of USD 676 bn last year toward clean energy investment and a global EV y-o-y spending climb of 36%, global clean energy investments need to surge 170% to realize a net-zero pathway, BNEF notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#1-<\/strong><strong>Morocco, GE launch decarbonization project: <\/strong>Morocco\u2019s National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.one.org.ma\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ONEE<\/a>) and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nareva.ma\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nareva<\/a> \u2014 owned by the royal family\u2019s holding company Al Mada \u2014 have signed an agreement with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gevernova.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">GE Vernova<\/a> to conduct a two-year feasibility study to explore the viability of using green hydrogen to decarbonize ONEE\u2019s 99 MW La\u00e2youne Thermal Power Plant, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ge.com\/news\/press-releases\/onee-nareva-and-ge-vernova-sign-mou-to-decarbonize-laayoune-power-plant-in-morocco-a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. GE did not disclose the financial details of the agreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details: <\/strong>The MoU will see the partners undertake techno-economic evaluation studies to convert heavy oil fuel used to power the three GE Vernova 6B gas turbines running the plant with green hydrogen. The clean energy used to generate the H2 will be sourced from Nareva\u2019s La\u00e2youne wind farm in the disputed Western Sahara. Nearly 30 GE Vernova 6B gas turbines are already compatible with hydrogen and have already been tested over the last twenty years, GE said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- Norway\u2019s USD 1.5 tn wealth fund boosts holdings in EV giants Tesla + BYD: <\/strong>Norway\u2019s USD 1.5 tn sovereign wealth fund Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) has increased investments in major EV players Tesla and BYD, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-29\/norway-s-1-5-trillion-wealth-fund-added-to-ev-bets-last-year\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. NBIM increased its stake in Tesla from 0.87% to 0.98%, reaching USD 7.7 bn and making it the fund\u2019s 11th biggest holding. The company had announced that it met its palm oil-free goal <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eni.com\/en-IT\/media\/press-release\/2022\/10\/eni-concluso-approvvigionamento-olio-di-palma.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ahead of schedule<\/a> in 2022. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Caught in the act: <\/strong>Transport & Environment outlined evidence in its new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/discover\/broken-promise-how-enis-refineries-are-still-relying-on-palm-oil-based-products\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> of Eni\u2019s refineries receiving shipments in 2023 of palm oil fatty acid distillate (PFAD), a by-product of crude palm oil production. Crude palm oil and its derivatives lead to increased \u201crisks of deforestation in producing countries through direct land conversion, but also indirect effects,\u201d the report states. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Eni refuses to back down: <\/strong>The oil company responded that it has been palm oil-free since late 2022 and that its use of PFAD is permissible under EU and Italian regulations, the newswire writes.
