giant Masdar has signed an agreement with Japanese oil and gas firms Tokyo Gas, Inpex, and Osaka Gas to study the feasibility of establishing a synthetic methane supply chain extending from Abu Dhabi to Japan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">^^ We have the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- UK\u2019s flagship nuclear project is <\/strong><strong>expected to cost USD 59 <\/strong><strong>bn<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>France\u2019s EDF has revised the timeline and projected investment ticket for the UK\u2019s 3.2 GW <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edfenergy.com\/energy\/nuclear-new-build-projects\/hinkley-point-c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hinkley Point C<\/a> nuclear plant, hiking the estimated cost of the project from 2015 prices by GBP 10 bn (c.USD 13 bn) to up to GBP 46 bn (c. USD 59 bn). The facility\u2019s launch date has also been pushed by two years with an expected inauguration date of 2029 at the earliest. Egypt has held talks with Saudi, Emirati, Chinese, Norwegian, French, and German companies to discuss the development and implementation of the project, the sources said, adding that the renewables farm will have a structure similar to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/attachments\/registers\/65771943.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">1.8 GW Benban solar project<\/a> near Aswan \u2014 the largest project of its kind in Africa. It is not clear whether a tender will be launched soon to select the project developer. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s next:<\/strong> According to sources, the initial land sites nominated for the project are a 10k sqkm plot in West Sohag, and a 16k sqkm plot in West Aswan, both owned by the New and Renewable Energy Authority. The ministry is currently in the process of conducting technical, legal, commercial, and financial studies for the project, including evaluating wind speeds and sunlight hours to determine site with the highest productivity for the project, as well as setting a suitable tariff and off-take guarantee with the government. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- This may be the project pending funding from EBRD: <\/strong>Earlier this week, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development completed the review for a potential <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/29b4d631-254c-4e80-9f2c-f01ebf194da5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 75 mn equity investment<\/a> into Egypt\u2019s renewables sector last week, which included a 2.5 GW wind project near Sohag. Aeolon tapped Morocco as a location in a bid to capitalize on its proximity to global markets and expand sales particularly to the EU and the remainder of the Middle East. Morocco\u2019s participation in China\u2019s Belt and Road initiative has provided incentives for Aeolon\u2019s planned operations in the country<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Aeolon isn\u2019t the first to head to the kingdom: <\/strong>Siemens Wind Power \u2014 the exclusive supplier of wind turbines for the 300 MW Boujdour wind farm in Morocco \u2014 last year <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ae7e37ef-56ad-4e04-bb2b-eceb2a5f3ac2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sourced a large part<\/a> of the wind turbine components for the plant locally at its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcinet.gov.ma\/en\/content\/siemens-gamesa-opened-first-plant-manufacturing-wind-turbine-blades-africa-and-middle-east\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Tangier blade production plant<\/a>, which it is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/siemens-gamesa-plans-sell-its-morocco-turbine-blade-factory-2022-11-17\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">currently looking to sell<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- The EU needs to spend EUR 1.5 tn a year in order to meet its 2050 net zero <\/strong><strong>targets<\/strong>, Brussels stated in a European Commission draft document seen by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ababab4c-7d81-4e63-b48c-0c59b687b5f2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>. The plan outlines a 90% reduction of emissions by 2040 and \u201ceconomy-wide climate neutrality\u201d by 2050. It also requires transitioning to a decarbonized electricity sector by 2040, shifting the workforce into green industries, and reducing fossil fuel consumption by 85%. The steep annual investment \u2014 which should begin in 2031 \u2014 is projected to save the bloc EUR 2.4 tn in economic losses as well as EUR 2.8 tn in fossil fuel imports between 2031 to 2050. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The agriculture sector isn\u2019t ready to commit just yet:<\/strong> Brussels\u2019s plans struck the wrong chord with some industries including agriculture, FT said. Farmers in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/woman-dies-after-car-hits-french-farmers-roadblock-police-2024-01-23\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">France<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/jan\/15\/why-europe-farmers-are-protesting\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> blocked roads earlier this week in protest of the stricter green regulations which fail to offer transitional support to the farmers amidst an already existing inflation and energy crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- <\/strong><strong>EU <\/strong><strong>delays ESG disclosure rules for some sectors until 2026: <\/strong>The European Parliament's legal affairs committee has approved a draft proposal to postpone by two years a requirement for some sectors to make detailed disclosures about environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/eu-lawmakers-back-delay-sector-specific-esg-corporate-disclosures-2026-2024-01-24\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The rules would require companies in the oil, gas, mining, road transport, food, cars, agriculture, energy production, and textiles to provide more detailed information on their ESG performance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why the delay?<\/strong> EU financial services commissioner Mairead McGuinness had asked the European Commission's corporate reporting advisory body, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.efrag.org\/?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EFRAG<\/a>, to prioritise the broader ESG disclosures that all companies must include in their annual reports from 2024 onwards under the EU's corporate sustainability reporting directive. Nuclear generation \u2014 which grew by about 70% in 2023 on the back of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bd37f42b-6295-4b55-9b06-5d71555fc1a6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant<\/a> developments \u2014 is predicted to decrease reliance on natural gas by 6% in 2026, down from the current 70% share, the IEA says. The UAE saw its power emissions drop 11% in 2023, with forecasts of a further 9% decrease in 2024 as Barakah becomes fully operational. However, the IEA warns that a gradual increase in emissions is expected after it reaches a peak low in 2024, as a result of increased energy demand that will only partially be met by renewables, the IEA notes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Oman\u2019s <\/strong><strong>solar drive is similarly expected to push down greenhouse output: <\/strong>Oman\u2019s electricity demand is expected to rise 3% from 2023 levels, which were already up 2.5% y-o-y, but the Sultanate\u2019s planned 1 GW <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bf85e495-a9bc-408a-b618-6a63aa63ef0d\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Manah I<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3aad63f3-6a3c-472b-950e-1d350da25403\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Manah II<\/a> PV farms \u2014 due to kickoff operations next year \u2014 would almost triple renewables production to reach 8% of the national power mix by 2026, bringing down gas reliance by 5% in the same time period, the IEA adds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Morocco <\/strong><strong>will source its rising energy demand from renewables: <\/strong>Though Morocco is expected to see its national electricity demand rise by an estimated 3.1% by 2026, the country\u2019s plans to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ae7e37ef-56ad-4e04-bb2b-eceb2a5f3ac2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">triple appropriations<\/a> toward renewables projects between 2023-2027, together with the addition of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/317c10c5-6a0b-4f38-b4b5-1bc1b3c62958\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">400 MW Noor Midelt II<\/a> and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/630a8192-837b-4d25-be26-371076c825bf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">400 MW Noor Midelt III<\/a> farms once completed, are expected to get the country to meet its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=88P0CXP8qDU\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">7 GW renewable energy by 2027<\/a>, the IEA notes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- <\/strong><strong>Egypt <\/strong><strong>is also showing potential: <\/strong>Electricity demand in Egypt was up 1.5% y-o-y in 2023, but national subsidies that encouraged substituting oil with natural gas for fuel, led to a 1.2% drop in yearly emissions intensity levels, the IEA notes, adding that the state\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fc167335-0aec-47c1-8dfa-ca6b908d64c3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">target to slash energy subsidies<\/a> could put downward pressure on demand growth beyond 2026. Though Egypt is expected to see its demand increase 2% on average over the next 3 years, its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/moic.gov.eg\/page\/nwfe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">plan to add 10 GW<\/a> of renewables between now and 2028 could see the share of green energy in its power mix rise to 13% \u2014 up from the current 11% \u2014 by 2026, according to the IEA. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But others are still lagging behind: <\/strong>Kuwait \u2014 which has an installed power capacity of 20 GW \u2014 sources only 70 MW of its energy from renewables, including its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e7f7f54f-21df-43aa-8407-a8fe702c30d6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Shagaya<\/a> solar plant. Although Kuwait is committing to sourcing 15% (or 14 GW) of its power from renewables by 2030, its expansions \u2014 including a plan to increase Shagaya\u2019s power output to 4.5 GW \u2014 are not scheduled for operation before 2027. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia, which is the world\u2019s largest operator of carbon-intensive desalination, is expected to see a 2.6% boost in electricity demand over the next 3 years, the share of clean energy\u2019s is predicted to rise 3% from 2023 levels, to comprise 4% of its cumulative generation by 2026, the IEA notes. Algeria \u2014 which as of the end of 2023 secured no tenders for renewables projects \u2014 is similarly forecast to see its power sector\u2019s emissions rise by 4.5% annually between 2024-2026, with gas generating 99% of its electricity over the same period, according to the IEA. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MENA outlook sees a fossil fuel drop:<\/strong> Overall in the Middle East, fossil fuels are set to drop from 93% of the regional power mix to 90% by 2026,while in Africa, the agency sees electricity consumption rising 4% through to 2026, with more than 60% of demand being met from renewables.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On a global level, China will have the <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c41a5db4-c3bd-4ba6-9f71-addd4b1b82d0\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last word<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> More than half of the global renewables expansion over the next 3 years is set to occur in China, which accounts for more than half of global demand, the IEA said in its annual coal market report last month. The planned clean energy additions are expected to reduce coal demand in the country in 2024 before it plateaus through 2026. That said, the outlook for coal in China will be \u201csignificantly affected in the coming years by the pace of clean energy deployment, weather conditions, and structural shifts in the Chinese economy,\u201d according to the IEA. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>If IEA projections hold true, we could see a significant
