develop nuclear <\/strong><strong>plant<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> The UK is channeling an additional GBP 1.3 bn (c.USD 1.65 bn) toward establishment of its 3.2 GW Sizewell C nuclear plant in Suffolk, raising total investments for the project to over GBP 2.6 bn. The UK government and the project\u2019s developer EDF \u2014 which expects to make a final investment decision on the project later this year \u2014 aim to raise GBP 20 bn to build the plant, which once fully operational could generate enough clean energy to meet seven percent of national power demands over its planned 60-year lifecycle. This means that our Egypt site is becoming one of the two largest nuclear construction projects in the world,\u201d Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev said, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/1\/2020.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Rosatom was contracted in 2015 to handle the construction and provide fuel for Dabaa. It <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/60ea8ab6-9f81-43cc-a75d-b3ff1de7a342\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">broke ground<\/a> on the USD 28.75 bn project in July 2022. Construction work was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/a09bbdbd-88eb-464a-8766-ce515fac76da\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">set to begin in the second half of 2020<\/a> and completed by the fiscal year 2028-2029, but pandemic-related <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/c39a7286-59a8-4e21-be3c-ead1b2dd3b75\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">disruptions<\/a> led to delays. Rosatom has signed 285 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/1234\/516353\/Egypt\/Foreign-Affairs\/UPDATED-Dabaa-Nuclear-Power-Plant-to-significantly.aspx\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">contracts worth USD 1.2 bn<\/a> with more than 90 local companies for the construction of the plant, Likhachev said, adding that the plan will help increase Egypt\u2019s GDP by over 1%. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#2- KSA and India partner on electricity <\/strong><strong>interconnector<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>The Saudi cabinet has approved an MoU to develop a clean energy interconnector linking the kingdom\u2019s electricity grid to India, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/en\/N2034999\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">SPA<\/a> reports. The subsea transmission line will reportedly cost some USD 18 bn to build, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/attaqa.net\/2024\/01\/23\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%B7-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%A6%D9%8A-%D8%A8%D9%8A%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%87%D9%86%D8%AF-%D9%82\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Attaqa<\/a> notes. The report surveyed 95 banking institutions covering 75% of EU loans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And 90% of the banks are exposed to elevated energy transition risks:<\/strong> In its new report, the ECB quantifies the most notable energy transition risks across the credit portfolios of the banks surveyed, concluding that 90% of the banks are exposed to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gresb.com\/nl-en\/products\/transition-risk-tool\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">transition risks<\/a>. 13 firms had over EUR5 bn in exposures across six key transition sectors, Reuters added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- France is the EU\u2019s top \u201c<\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c1babb07-789a-4a51-b197-77c592f1c9c7\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon bomb<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u201d supporter<\/strong>: French banking groups have shelled out USD 154 bn since the 2015 Paris Agreement toward financing the world\u2019s 425 largest fossil fuel extraction projects \u2014 also known as carbon bombs \u2014 with the country's top banking groups BNP Paribas, BPCE Group, Cr\u00e9dit Agricole, and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale investing some USD 17.8 bn in big oil in 2022 alone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN OTHER EU <\/strong><strong>NEWS<\/strong><strong>-<\/strong><strong>EU carbon prices aren\u2019t faring well:<\/strong> A new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/analysts-cut-eu-carbon-price-forecasts-weak-industry-power-sector-demand-2024-01-23\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters poll<\/a> of nine analysts has cut forecasts for EU carbon prices from 2024 to 2026 on the back of weak industrial demand for power plants to an average of EUR 74.11 per CO2 metric ton (MT) this year, EUR 83.31 in 2025, and EUR 100.13 in 2026 The 2024 forecast is down 11.3% from a previous <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/carbon\/analysts-lower-eu-carbon-price-forecasts-weak-industry-power-demand-2023-10-13\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters survey<\/a> in October, while the 2025 projections fell 6.3%, and the 2026 numbers are also down 2.8%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why is this an issue?<\/strong> Last month, the International Monetary Fund called <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6a4432e8-2f35-43b4-9598-c504baf3b4a6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">for raising the trading price of carbon<\/a> in efforts to incentivize the world\u2019s biggest polluters to accelerate their decarbonization efforts.
