The UAE unveiled its renewables strategy back in 2017, setting out a target to source 50% of its power from clean energy sources by 2050. The country\u2019s renewables generation capacity currently stands at 20 GW, Al Zeyoudi noted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN AVIATION NEWS- Masdar + TotalEnergies debut Methanol-to-SAF powered flight:<\/strong> A consortium comprising Masdar, TotalEnergies, Airbus, Axens, and Falcon Aviation Services have successfully completed the first flight test powered by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from methanol on the sidelines of COP28, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/masdar.ae\/en\/news\/newsroom\/totalenergies-and-masdar-demonstrate-methanol-to-saf-pathway-with-successful-test-flight&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1701891136433792&usg=AOvVaw3qHCpzTzr5htgwss6ljB3D\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority worked with the companies on the pilot flight. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why this matters:<\/strong> Methanol isn't among the alcohols in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.energyfuels.3c01805%23:~:text%3DAbstract-,Alcohol%252Dto%252DJet%2520Synthetic%2520Paraffinic%2520Kerosene%2520(AtJ%252DSPK,to%2520describe%2520its%2520combustion%2520behavior.&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1701891136434386&usg=AOvVaw1-UCVdw95CQcvZS82qUe-R\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcohol-to-Jet Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene pathway<\/a> which was certified in 2016 as meeting international standards for jet fuel. However, the flight used an SAF blend made from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org\/chemicals\/olefins\/%23:~:text%3DOlefins%2520are%2520a%2520class%2520of,butadiene%2520are%2520examples%2520of%2520olefins.&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1701891136434665&usg=AOvVaw3t9AF3gHw1pfx34hoaJvNJ\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">olefins<\/a>, which can bypass the restrictions for obtaining the certificate. This new method can eventually allow for SAF to be produced from renewables (eSAF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And there\u2019s a new tool to measure SAFs' impact:<\/strong> Illinois-based United Airlines Holdings and other carriers including Microsoft, RMI, and the Environmental Defense Fund launched the SAFc Registry which measures the emissions benefits of new SAFs that airlines blend into jet kerosene, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-12-06\/air-travel-gets-new-tool-to-measure-sustainable-fuels-impact?srnd%3Dgreen%26leadSource%3Duverify%2520wall&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1701891136435102&usg=AOvVaw2hnqilbyFphZ0o5MG2f9Sf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. SAF can be made from a variety of feedstocks that have different emissions profiles and need more sophisticated methods to accurately assess the amount of CO2 reduced.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt4\"><\/a>MORE BACKING IN THE COAL EXIT- UAE and Malta join pledge to phase out coal: <\/strong>Malta and the UAE joined the UK-led Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) on Tuesday, vowing alongside 57 other countries to accelerate the transition from coal to clean energy, the PPCA said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/poweringpastcoal.org\/press-releases\/cop28-presidency-holder-united-arab-emirates-joins-a-growing-coalition-of-countries-committed-to-coal-phase-out\/&sa=D&source=editors&ust=1701891136435840&usg=AOvVaw3mAUD5UWM-0rjlGZq8ehuM\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. Despite 10% of its power being generated from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maltatoday.com.mt\/news\/national\/120635\/dirty_coal_accounts_for_13_of_imported_electricity\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">imported coal<\/a>, Malta phased out coal power in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/energywateragency.gov.mt\/security-of-supply\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">1995<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Korea wants in on Oman\u2019s green hydrogen industry: <\/strong>South Korea is hosting the Korea-Oman Green Hydrogen Strategic Forum from 12 to 14 December in Muscat in efforts to attract foreign investment in Oman\u2019s emerging green hydrogen sector, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.omanobserver.om\/article\/1146513\/business\/energy\/korea-forum-to-build-on-strategic-green-energy-ties-with-oman\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Oman Observer<\/a> reports. The forum is set to build on strategic green energy ties between Korean and Omani stakeholders and promote cooperation on green hydrogen infrastructure, hydrogen charging stations, hydrogen commercial vehicles, and waste-to-energy businesses, the news outlet said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Korea already has green ties with Oman: <\/strong>In September, Korea Western Power (Kowepco) \u2014 along with France\u2019s EDF Renewables \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7c3e47e3-bcd8-4236-80d6-b8cebe4c02c2\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">began the construction<\/a> of a 500 MW Manah solar plant in Oman. In August, Oman\u2019s Energy and Minerals Ministry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0fb94c8a-ba02-4e96-8d8a-3239081b1a19\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an MoU<\/a> with South Korea\u2019s Environment Ministry to strengthen and develop bilateral cooperation in the green transition. A consortium led by South Korea\u2019s steelmaking company Posco Group was awarded in June <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f13d49f5-621e-4fc7-84f9-c254d8a9b06f\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a USD 6.7 bn contract<\/a> to set up what was described at the time as the world\u2019s largest green hydrogen plant in Oman\u2019s Duqm. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DANGER ZONE- <\/strong><strong>Sovereign wealth funds have stalled when it comes to climate: <\/strong>Despite the world\u2019s sovereign wealth funds sitting on almost USD 12 tn, that cash is not likely to go to climate investments, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-finance-reporting\/sovereign-wealth-funds-struggle-turn-their-trillions-climate-finance-2023-12-06\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Acwa Power also made moves further into Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>GREEN HYDROGEN-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Jordan<\/strong><strong> inks a spate of green agreements at COP28:<\/strong> Jordan\u2019s Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has signed nine MoUs during COP28 on green fuels, green financing, and more, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bitly.ws\/34ESK\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>First up, green ammonia: <\/strong>The ministry signed MoUs to conduct feasibility studies to explore green ammonia production in the Kingdom. The first will be conducted by Saudi\u2019s Acwa Power to produce 100-150k tons of green ammonia annually. The second will be conducted by a consortium comprising the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/home.kepco.co.kr\/kepco\/EN\/main.do\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Korea Electric Power Corporation<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.xenel.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Xenel International<\/a> to produce green hydrogen and 1 mn tons of green ammonia annually. India\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ociorenergy.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Ocior Energy<\/a> will conduct another study for the production of 100k tons yearly, increasing to 1 mn tons by 2030, while Catalyst Investment Management Jordan will explore producing 150k tons of green ammonia as well. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Then onto green finance: <\/strong>The ministry also signed an MoU with Italy's Ministry of Environment and Energy Security to explore ways to finance project proposals and initiatives of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jreeef.memr.gov.jo\/Default\/En\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund<\/a> for the next four years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And more: <\/strong>The ministry also signed a letter of intent with the Canadian Commercial Corporation to implement energy conservation projects for Jordanian government buildings within the ESCO2 model program, promote the work of energy rationalization and conservation projects in buildings, and increase financing options. The last MoU was signed with Guidehouse International to rationalize energy use within the Heating and Cooling of Buildings program in Jordan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Acwa <\/strong><strong>Power takes a big step in Indonesia\u2019s green hydrogen market:<\/strong> Saudi's Acwa Power signed an agreement with Indonesia's PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) to build the largest green hydrogen facility in Indonesia, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acwapower.com\/news\/acwa-power-signs-deal-to-develop-the-largest-green-hydrogen-project-in-indonesia\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The USD 1 bn project \u2014 dubbed the Garuda Hidrogen Hijau (GH2) \u2014 will have a capacity of 150k tons of green hydrogen annually, powered by 600 MW of solar and wind energy. Commercial operations for GH2 will begin in 2026. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not the first PLN-Acwa Power partnership:<\/strong> Acwa Power partnered with the state-owned company last year to develop a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/61525d65-123b-493b-b8d6-ed7866b82314\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">4 GW battery storage facility<\/a> and a hydroelectric-powered green hydrogen production facility. The Tadawul-listed company was also tapped by PLN to develop two floating solar PV solar projects worth USD 105 mn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2db16a38-c2c8-45c6-a3c3-74e5bfba9d9c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last year<\/a>.
