people. <\/strong>We have a compact issue for you this morning after a very busy start to the week with some big news emerging from KSA\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY-<\/strong> Saudi sovereign wealth fund the Public Investment Fund and Hyundai Motor Company signed a JV agreement to establish a highly automated vehicle manufacturing plant in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY- The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fii-institute.org\/conference\/fii7\/\">Future Investment Initiative<\/a><\/strong><strong> is kicking off today in Riyadh and <\/strong><strong>running through<\/strong><strong> to <\/strong><strong>Thursday.<\/strong> The event will gather state leaders, policymakers, executives, academics, NGOs, entrepreneurs, and scientists and host panels on how to scale green technologies, mining, AI\u2019s role in the energy revolution, and how geoeconomics will impact critical minerals among other topics.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>100+ companies demand a fossil fuels axing deadline: <\/strong>Ikea, Volvo, Unilever, Vodafone, and 130 other global conglomerates with a combined annual book value of over USD 1 tn signed an open letter ahead of COP28 calling for a timeline on scrapping fossil fuels. The unified front said that corporations are \u201cfeeling the effects and cost of increasing extreme weather events resulting from climate change,\u201d the letter read. \u201cWe call on all parties attending COP28 to seek outcomes that will lay the groundwork to transform the global energy system towards a full phaseout of unabated fossil fuels and halve emissions this decade,\u201d the letter added. Back in July, a meeting of G20 energy ministers at the Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting in India <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/65d9a591-8b2c-40c4-ae42-d5768511e143\">failed to reach consensus<\/a> on a fossil fuel phasedown as several major fossil fuel producers led by Saudi Arabia and Russia blocked the move. Western nations including the EU <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b9933f84-4111-4baa-8666-44576b3fc255\">remain divided<\/a> on how hard to push for a global agreement to fully phase-out fossil fuels at COP28.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story got coverage in <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/cop\/nestle-volvo-among-130-companies-urging-cop28-agreement-ditch-fossil-fuels-2023-10-23\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong> <strong>and the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/653560ff-6706-4e18-a7c0-36b8f6b8f282\">Financial Times<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- It\u2019s official for KSA\u2019s hydrogen oasis: <\/strong>KSA Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and South Korea\u2019s President Yoon Suk Yeol attended the signing ceremony for the previously announced \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/\">Hydrogen Oasis<\/a>\u201d cooperation initiative, the Saudi Ministry of Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MoEnergy_Saudi\/status\/1716161600560767021\/video\/2\">said<\/a> yesterday. The joint initiative will work on establishing bilateral committees managing each step of the clean hydrogen value chain from production to storage and distribution, and facilitate partnership agreements between developers from both countries. The statistics agencies of both countries are also expected to ink a knowledge transfer agreement on \u201cmaterial on statistical production\u201d of clean hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>ALSO- PIF is looking to partner up with the EU on clean energy: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia\u2019s Minister of Investment Khalid Al-Falih says KSA\u2019s sovereign wealth fund The Public Investment Fund (PIF) is seeking partnerships with EU-based companies in the green hydrogen and renewables markets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/article\/56005\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%A8%D8%AF%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%87%D8%A7-%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%85%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%A8%D9%8A-%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%82%D9%87%D8%A7-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A\/\">Asharq Business<\/a> reports. The kingdom is looking to leverage strong economic cooperation between both sides \u2014 as well as the kingdom\u2019s green hydrogen infrastructure \u2014 to expand bilateral development, Al-Falih said. The European Commission's Vice President Maro\u0161 \u0160ef\u010dovi\u010d inked an agreement to establish an EU Chamber of Commerce in KSA to expand cooperation with the kingdom and the wider GCC region, the news outlet notes. PIF will have a 70% stake in the venture while Huyndai will hold the remaining 30% in addition to providing technical and commercial expertise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>The plant will have a manufacturing capacity of 50k vehicles annually including both internal combustion engines and EVs, without disclosing how much of the annual output will be EVs. Construction is expected to start in 2024 and production in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We knew this was coming: <\/strong>Hyundai announced in September that it is planning to ink a formal agreement with Saudi Arabia to set up an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e987a624-8db3-4c6b-bfd6-bbe62eddd6f8\">EV assembly<\/a> plant in the country. KSA also signed an MoU with Hyundai Motor Company for the construction of an EV and internal combustion engine manufacturing plant in January<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said:<\/strong> \"Our investment in vehicle manufacturing with Hyundai Motor Company is a pivotal milestone, aligning closely with our <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4c08f92b-a46c-4e3f-8612-fda17753e740\">existing stakes in Lucid and Ceer Motors<\/a>, and amplifying the breadth of Saudi Arabia's automotive and mobility value chain,\u201d deputy governor and head of MENA Investments at PIF Yazeed A. Al-Humied said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s been a busy month for KSA:<\/strong> PIF and the Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) launched the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Company <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2db29355-7532-4e33-a2c8-668568d738ad\">earlier this month<\/a> to expand fast-charging infrastructure across the kingdom. PIF also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/8c166d36-61f3-4cb4-8ea9-20c64c527bb7\">launched Tasaru Mobility Investments<\/a>, which focuses on strengthening the local supply chain for electric and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Hyundai wants to work on hydrogen-based mobility: <\/strong>Hyundai Moors signed an MoU with Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), Air Products Qudra (APQ), and the Saudi Public Transport Company (SAPTCO) to establish and develop an ecosystem for hydrogen-based mobility in Saudi, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.com\/worldwide\/en\/company\/newsroom\/detail\/0000000335\">statement<\/a>. The collaboration will promote demonstration projects for hydrogen-fuel cell commercial vehicles. The partnership will see Hyundai provide hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles to SAPTCO, KATECH explore further research and development avenues, and APQ secure the hydrogen supply in the kingdom, href=\"https:\/\/www.portofamsterdam.com\/en\">Port of Amsterdam<\/a> to explore the feasibility of opening a green hydrogen corridor extending from the kingdom to Europe via Amsterdam, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/acwa-power-dutch-entities-to-jointly-explore-green-hydrogen-export-corridor-es3wjmaq\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:<\/strong> Under the MoU, all parties will conduct a feasibility study to explore establishing a trade corridor for liquified green hydrogen between Acwa Power\u2019s production sites and the port of Amsterdam, the statement notes. Based on the results, the stakeholders may proceed to sign in a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to define each of the parties\u2019 roles and responsibilities and engage with offtakers in the EU.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s more: <\/strong>The parties will also explore incentives to increase the appetite for green hydrogen including affordable pricing, the statement adds, noting that the Dutch government has earmarked EUR 9 bn for the development of green hydrogen production and distribution with EUR 300 mn is reserved for imports up until 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acwa\u2019s stakes in Neom will come in handy: <\/strong>100% of the green hydrogen produced in Neom\u2019s green hydrogen plant \u2014 of which Acwa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/business\/energy\/saudi-acwa-power-signs-85bln-financing-for-neom-green-hydrogen-project-juyd87wy\">holds a 33.3% stake<\/a> \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/667db3a4-e073-4568-bb2e-5ea77b26e032\">marked for export<\/a>, with project co-developer US-based Air Products looking to earmark a sizable portion of Neom\u2019s green fuels for Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Port of Amsterdam has been busy:<\/strong> Last month, Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f017741a-f7cc-4187-a395-20bf7a37994a\">signed a cooperation agreement<\/a> with a consortium of Dutch-based green hydrogen developers to establish subsea interconnectors facilitating the export of green fuels from Egypt to the Port of Amsterdam. Back in January, the Port of Amsterdam and Dutch firms SkyNRG, Evos Amsterdam, and Zenith Energy Terminals <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/757bf5d3-3c24-496e-8345-18e4d771a340\">signed an agreement<\/a> with the UAE\u2019s Masdar to similarly explore the possibilities of green fuel exports to Europe.
