It will initially be discharged in smaller portions, with the first discharge totalling 7.8k cubic meters for 17 days starting tomorrow. The announcement comes a day after the Japanese government said it reached \u201ca degree of understanding\u201d from the fishing industry after months of opposition on how it would impact their livelihood.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some still see it as \u201cselfish\u201d: <\/strong>China has described the move as \u201cextremely selfish\u201d and filed a formal complaint, saying it \u201cwill take all necessary measures to protect the marine environment, food safety, and public health\u201d without disclosing which measures would be taken. Hong Kong has also described the disposal as \u201cirresponsible\u201d and said it would \u201cimmediately activate\u201d import controls on Japanese seafood coming from Tokyo and Fukushima starting tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The disposal is dominating coverage in the international press:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/japan-release-fukushima-water-into-ocean-starting-aug-24-2023-08-22\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2023-08-22\/fukushima-nuclear-plant-how-japan-is-planning-to-safely-release-its-wastewater\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/aug\/22\/fukushima-wastewater-from-ruined-nuclear-plant-to-be-released-from-thursday-japan-says\">The Guardian<\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-66578158\">BBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/21\/world\/asia\/japan-fukushima-water-release.html\">The New York Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/08\/21\/japan-fukushima-water-release-nuclear-plant\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-nuclear-fukushima-radioactive-water-release-9ba86b5761170efc762d45e901903ded\">The Associated Press<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/world\/asia\/japan-to-release-water-from-fukushima-nuclear-plant-into-pacific-this-week-1e527a8\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>OVER IN COPLAND- We have an official thematic schedule<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>COP28 has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/thematic-program\">two-week program<\/a> with key themes including Health; Relief, Recovery, and Peace; Nature, Land Use, and Oceans; Food and Water Systems; Just Energy Transition; Industry; Trade; Youth, Education, and Skills; Finance; Gender Equality; Cities, Regions, and Urbanization; and Transport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When are the major days happening?<\/strong> The World Climate Summit \u2014 which will bring together world leaders and heads of state to discuss the climate crisis and related issues \u2014 is set to be held on 1-2 December, and the final days of negotiations will take place between 11-12 December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Irena will announce outcomes of its accelerator platform at the summit: <\/strong>The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) will announce the results of its Energy Transition Accelerator Financing platform (<a href=\"https:\/\/etafplatform.org\/\">ETAF<\/a>) at COP28, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303188361\">Wam<\/a> reports, citing statements by UAE Permanent Representative to Irena Nawal Al Hosany. The UAE-backed multi-stakeholder climate finance platform has attracted some USD 1.25 bn in pledged resources to back energy transition under a target to provide financing for 5 GW of projects by 2030. Last month, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f046a737-0b72-4e0b-bbc2-8190f369fc63\">committed USD 100 mn<\/a> in financing for renewables projects in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Will Vestas\u2019 250 MW Egyptian wind farm come online in <\/strong><strong>December?<\/strong> An international consortium led by Denmark\u2019s wind turbine developer Vestas is set to begin trial operations on a 250 MW wind farm in Egypt\u2019s Gulf of Suez next month before bringing the project online in December, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masrawy.com\/news\/news_egypt\/details\/2023\/8\/22\/2457597\/%D8%A8%D9%82%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%A9-250-%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A8%D8%AF%D8%A1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B4%D8%BA%D9%8A%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%AC%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A8%D9%8A-%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B7%D8%A9-%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AD-%D8%AE%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%AC-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%88%D9%8A%D8%B3-%D8%B3%D8%A8%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%A8%D8%B1\">Masrawy<\/a> reports, citing a source from Egypt\u2019s New and Renewable Energy Agency (NREA). The project \u2014 owned by NREA and implemented by a Vestas-led consortium \u2014 is expected to cost c. EUR 220 mn, and will be funded <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/68cee6d6-5517-4793-8ccb-cefea32b1955\">through an agreement<\/a> between Egypt and European partners, including the French Development Agency, the EU, the European Investment Bank, and the KfW Development Bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE<\/strong><strong> #2- Lithium ion BESS prices set for a dramatic drop by 2050: <\/strong>Prices for lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS), which are essential for electrified transportation and the transition to clean energy, are expected to drop 16-49% by 2030 and 28-67% by 2050, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/docs\/fy23osti\/85332.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory. BESS costs could fall by 47% by 2030 and by 67% by 2050, the report notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this happening?<\/strong> Market demand, material costs and availability, and supply chain expansions are all expected to contribute to the drop in lithium ion battery cell price tags, the report notes. Between January and March 2023, lithium prices dropped 20% to return to 2022 levels, which stood at USD 151\/KWh, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/global-ev-outlook-2023\/trends-in-batteries\">International Energy Agency<\/a>. An anticipated 40% uptick in global lithium supplies coupled with a slow down in demand for 1Q contributed to the trend, IEA noted, adding that if the drop in prices is sustained, a drop in EV battery costs will follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- A giga-scale lithium ion battery plant is coming to our neck of the woods:<\/strong> UK-based renewables company Xlinks \u2014 the project developer of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/15ce2423-6613-4df0-bf73-bd560e7979d8\">GBP 18 bn<\/a> Morocco-UK Xlinks interconnector \u2014 plans to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52aefc63-82e3-42e3-8afc-960461fa5288\">20 GWh lithium ion<\/a> battery storage facility in Morocco.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a><strong>THE DANGER ZONE- <\/strong><strong>Egypt\u2019s acute water scarcity is ringing the alarm bell:<\/strong> Egypt is nearing acute water scarcity with an annual share of water per person of 500 m3, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3r3dyash\">statement<\/a>. Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Hani Sewilam said several measures are underway to help deal with the crisis, including a new law managing the use of water and adaptation solutions in several parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Addressing water challenges has been a top priority for Egypt<\/strong>, as concern continues over the impact of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on water supply. In efforts to diversify its water resources, Cairo has announced plans to help ensure its water security, including the EGP 18 bn Bahr El Baqar <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/7bd53455-008b-49a0-860f-1f17c68cea22\">wastewater treatment facility<\/a> and a USD 2.5 bn plan to build 17 solar-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d1c572ed-19b8-4119-9e77-ab2ed628d2d9\">desalination plants<\/a>. It captures intermittent electricity from wind and solar and stores it at very high temperatures in brick materials to help supply industrial heat on demand. It based its new technology on materials widely used in heating and heat storage: brick and iron wire. It says that energy stored under the system comes at half the cost of other technologies like green hydrogen and chemical batteries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Superheated indeed: <\/strong>Air flowing up through the brick stack is superheated up to 1.5k degrees celsius, with the delivery rate adjusted easily by altering air flow. Automated AI patented controls help ensure that heat at the outlet is delivered at desired temperatures and pressure to meet industrial facility demands, it says. A recycling mechanism also occurs, with exhausted air recycled back through the system to help lower heat loss and boost efficiency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your household items operate on the same concept: <\/strong>There\u2019s nothing special about the tech, your blow dryer does the same thing. \u201cWe developed a new combination of materials for the storage. You can then deliver heat continually by circulating air into the stack of that material and getting superheated air out,\u201d CEO John O'Donnell told <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2022\/02\/08\/rondo-series-a\/\">TechCrunch<\/a>. This heat is then turned into steam in a conventional boiler or delivered in high-temperatures for heavy industrial use, he said. O\u2019Donnell says such technology operates at a small fraction of the cost of any electrochemical battery and half the cost of any hydrogen system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Rondo has big backing: <\/strong>The rollout of the technology could be accelerated further after the company recently raised USD 60 mn in new financing from industry leaders, including Microsoft\u2019s Climate Innovation Fund and Saudi Arabia\u2019s leading petrochemicals firm Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) and Aramco Ventures, the statement notes. The funding will help Rondo expand overseas operations and develop and establish storage facilities globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And that\u2019s not all:<\/strong> The US startup started operations this year at <a href=\"https:\/\/biodieselmagazine.com\/articles\/2518590\/rondo-energy-adds-thermal-energy-storage-at-calgren-biorefinery\">its first<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/biodieselmagazine.com\/articles\/2518590\/rondo-energy-adds-thermal-energy-storage-at-calgren-biorefinery\">commercial unit<\/a> to help bring down the carbon intensity of biofuel produced by Calgren Renewable fuels. The project is the US\u2019 first commercially operating electric thermal energy storage system and the highest efficiency and temperature energy storage of its kind globally. It also announced a <a href=\"https:\/\/rondo.com\/press-releases\/op5lhl9t68drxfpv7atq3nak2zbk3l\">current Heat Battery storage production capacity<\/a> of 2.4GWh\/year with Siam Cement Group (SCG). The term was <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/458209\/gigafactory-what-does-it-mean\/\">first coined by Elon Musk<\/a> in 2013 when referring to the massive battery production facility Tesla was building, and the mega plants have cropped up in China, Europe, India, the US, and regionally, in Morocco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where we stand: <\/strong>The number of gigafactories in the construction or planning phase by 2030 is estimated at 401 amid an EV battery production bonanza, according to a recent report by <a href=\"https:\/\/source.benchmarkminerals.com\/article\/over-400-gigafactories-in-2030-pipeline-but-overcapacity-fears-loom\">Benchmark Mineral Intelligence<\/a>. The latest addition to the pipeline is India\u2019s Tata Group\u2019s 40 GWh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/tata-picks-britain-new-ev-battery-plant-2023-07-19\/\">UK-based gigafactory<\/a> \u2014 its first outside of India \u2014 which has netted some GBP 4 bn (USD 5.2 bn) in investments and will help provide nearly half of the battery production that Britain needs by 2030. The facility will launch in 2026 and provide electric batteries to Jaguar Land Rover\u2019s future EV models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gigafactories are key to the growth of the EV market: <\/strong>These mega plants will power a booming EV industry. The EV market size in the Middle East and Africa is projected to boom to c.USD 7.7 bn by 2028 from USD 2.7 bn in 2023 at a CAGR of 23.2%, data by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mordorintelligence.com\/industry-reports\/middle-east-and-africa-automotive-electric-vehicle-market\/market-size\">Mordor Intelligence<\/a> showed. Such a growth will be driven by efforts to promote the use of EVs and increased awareness about energy storage solutions in the sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expect a giga-boom:<\/strong> Gigafactories are being built in countries with automotive industries transitioning to EV manufacturing, which are increasingly looking to maximize value chain efficiency. Investments in gigafactories are set to grow tenfold by the end of the decade, Investment Monitor writes, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investmentmonitor.ai\/manufacturing\/what-is-a-gigafactory-where-are-they-being-built\/\">research by GlobalData<\/a>. It estimates between USD 106 bn and USD 177.6 bn will be poured into building the facilities as they become larger in capacity and more widespread globally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what makes a region attractive for investment?<\/strong> Aside from traditional tools like subsidies and tax breaks, other strategies being used to attract <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investmentmonitor.ai\/manufacturing\/what-is-a-gigafactory-where-are-they-being-built\/\">gigafactory investments<\/a> such as implementing combustion engine phase out policies, emission reduction targets geared to the transport industry, strong local and regional demand for EVs, strong EV charging infrastructure, and providing clean energy supply to power the plants. Regions with industrial clusters to support battery and EV production, robust battery supply chains with raw materials, and midstream products and battery recycling facilities have proven attractive for gigafactory investment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s no surprise that China reigns supreme: <\/strong>China is home to 125 gigafactories, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdiintelligence.com\/content\/feature\/how-china-is-charging-ahead-in-the-ev-race-80771\">over ten times<\/a> the combined number in Europe and North America, according to a 2022 report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.international-construction.com\/news\/how-the-worlds-biggest-ev-battery-gigafactories-are-being-built-so-quickly\/8030551.article\">Benchmark Market Intelligence<\/a>. The country is expected to have 226 battery plants <a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/newswire\/over-300-battery-gigafactories-in-the-global-pipeline\/\">in operation<\/a> by 2030, representing some 4.5k GWh of annual production or 70% of global capacity. Chinese giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catl.com\/en\/\">CATL<\/a>, the world\u2019s biggest battery maker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/china-battery-giant-catls-5-bln-swiss-listing-delayed-amid-beijing-regulatory-2023-03-14\/\">controls 37%<\/a>of the world\u2019s electric batteries market and is worth USD 139 bn by market value. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/chinas-catl-german-plant-targets-six-battery-cell-production-lines-by-end-2023-2023-01-26\/\">kicked off its overseas gigafactories<\/a> presence in Germany, with the 14 GWh plant forecast to make 30 mn cells annually at full capacity, or enough to power up around 350k EVs with a 40 kilowatt-hour battery. It is projected to be Europe\u2019s largest battery maker in Europe when its planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/chinas-catl-german-plant-targets-six-battery-cell-production-lines-by-end-2023-2023-01-26\/\">100-GWh facility in Hungary<\/a> reaches full capacity. It aims to kickoff production at the mega battery plant within two to three years, according to company officials.<\/p>\n<p>\n <strong>But Chinese companies are eyeing our region: <\/strong>Morocco <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b6bc199f-bd7c-42b3-aa7c-2aa766f2e3c4\">signed an MoU<\/a> with Chinese battery maker Gotion High Tech in June to build a roadmap for setting up a gigafactory for EV batteries and energy storage systems. Under the agreement, Gotion High-Tech will set up a \u201cgigafactory\u201d with investments estimated at MAD 65 bn (c. USD 6.4 bn) in Bouknadel. The facility, which will be the first of its kind in Africa, will have a production capacity of 100 GWh and will create 25k jobs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The region\u2019s EV value chain plays a key part:<\/strong> Egypt is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ec24ca3c-1d4a-44bb-bc35-f89f02588d07\">supporting Abou Ghaly Motors<\/a> and other private sector players with incentives to get a homegrown EV industry off the ground, with the country\u2019s environment minister expecting the first locally-assembled EVs to roll off production lines in 2024. Turkey rolled out the country\u2019s first homegrown <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dd5f8ad6-48c3-43f9-9f3b-16ec8951b987\">electric vehicle Togg<\/a> last year, with plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/erdogan-backed-ev-maker-targets-europe-exports-next-year-1.1918899\">begin exports<\/a> to Europe from the end of 2024. KSA\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, holds a majority stake in EV manufacturer Lucid Motors. Construction of the EV firm\u2019s Saudi Arabian production plant began in May this year, with the company eyeing having <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dd5f8ad6-48c3-43f9-9f3b-16ec8951b987\">80% of all its EVs made in Saudi Arabia<\/a> by 2030. The researchers used adult flies \u2014 regarded as waste in fly farms due to their short life span \u2014 to produce the polymers. Fly farms are often established to provide feed for animals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The recycled plastic could be used to build products needed for climate adaptation:<\/strong> Using the remains of the flies, the researchers were able to create a hydrogel \u2014 a network of polymer chains with an ability to absorb water \u2014 to absorb a lot of water during flood periods, to then be slowly released during droughts, according to the principal investigator. The hydrogel built was able to absorb 47 times its weight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why black soldier <\/strong><strong>flies<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong> Black soldier flies have an exoskeleton that is rich in nutritious compounds like chitin, which is a sugar-based polymer that provides support for insects, and is extracted by humans for chitin powder, the news outlet describes. The flies can also consume any plastic waste from the process, contributing to a circular system of zero waste as they do not have any competing uses like sugarcane, for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The region is looking for creative ways to recycle waste:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Sabic and Aramco along with France\u2019s TotalEnergies were able to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cd546a10-d62a-4740-b39d-1e511c945e58\">transform plastic waste into circular polymers<\/a> for the first time in the MENA region. Morocco set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cb2d5f1f-7be7-4f50-b003-f3b8762fa1e7\">MAD 1 bn textile recycling project<\/a> to recycle fabric waste from textile factories in the country. UAE\u2019s Terrax is importing a new technology from Brazil to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a87f0d23-c03e-48ec-a7e6-62f4c5a0f61f\">recycle waste into plywood materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it's not the first time animal waste is repurposed:<\/strong> New-York fashion based startup TomTex <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/257948e3-771f-46d2-9c68-cf2e0beb0608\">created biodegradable leather<\/a> using the chitosan in shrimp shells to produce a product that feels and looks like leather.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Plastic plays a main role in the climate crisis:<\/strong> Plastic production generated 1.8 bn metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 globally. It is estimated that from 2010 to 2025, Egypt\u2019s level of plastic waste will double from <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/marine-plastic-pollution-growing-egypt-big-factor-global-scale\/\">0.25 to about 0.5 megatons annually<\/a>. The UAE has an annual overall waste of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecomena.org\/plastic-uae\/\">912.5 kilogram per capita<\/a>. Plastic affects marine life and damages soil and it has toxic chemicals that may cause fatal diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content
