Let\u2019s dive right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Abu Dhabi-headquartered green fuels developer Ocior Energy has been named as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d13315b0-b05b-4df6-9052-5feb1165fcf7\">the undisclosed company<\/a> with its eyes on a space in Egypt\u2019s green hydrogen push. The company signed preliminary agreements with the Egyptian government to build a USD 4 bn green hydrogen production plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have more details on this story and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- There\u2019s no single climate story <\/strong><strong>dominating international headlines this morning<\/strong>, but the German Cabinet agreed to allocate EUR 57.6 bn (c. USD 63.2 bn) for green investments next year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/german-cabinet-approves-58-bln-eur-green-investments-plan-2024-2023-08-09\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The allocation is up 60.2% from this year\u2019s target as the country tries to build up subsidies to help the country reach net zero by 2045. Most of the funds will be earmarked to the country\u2019s building sector, with EUR 18.9 bn for subsidies in renovations and new construction. Renewable energy subsidies have been set at EUR 12.6 bn, while EUR 3.7 bn will be directed to boosting Germany\u2019s e-mobility charging infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO MAKING HEADLINES- Scientists are on the lookout for other factors that could <\/strong><strong>have triggered this summer\u2019s record breaking heat<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hot-summer-climate-change-el-nino-9c5151f2fca2cd77d92a1c7bc61a0035\">The Associated Press<\/a> reports, as July was <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/\">officially deemed the Earth\u2019s hottest month<\/a>on record. They all agree that the biggest trigger was global warming from the continued burning of coal, oil, and natural gas, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/680f2e7e-93a5-401f-8562-ffdd0456b34b\">El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, while some scientists believe other factors could be fueling a hotter planet such as cleaner air resulting from new shipping rules and a South Pacific volcano that released 165 mn tons of water into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How and why: <\/strong>The dirty fuel used in maritime shipping releases particles that reflect sunlight in a manner that helps lower temperatures, so new international shipping rules triggered in 2020 to slash 80% of those cooling particles was a \u201ckind of shock to the system,\u201d atmospheric scientist Tianle Yuan said. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha\u2019apai underwater volcano is also a suspect, with scientists saying that its released water was acting as a heat-trapping greenhouse gas as vapor.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Egypt\u2019s GAFI launches a simplified <\/strong><strong>corporate<\/strong> <strong>incorporation process: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s General Authority for Freezones and Investment (GAFI) electronically incorporated Damietta for Green Ammonia through a newly launched online platform created to ease the process for investors, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3OPLDho\">statement<\/a>. The platform will enable investors to digitally incorporate their firms and settle establishment fees electronically using e-signatures, GAFI CEO Hossam Heiba said. The new online system will allow investors to check for updates on the status of their applications while GAFI finalizes the process and receive personalized guidance based on their respective industries, including business structure frameworks and the required documents and fees for corporate incorporation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Vestas expects wind turbine backlog to weigh on earnings:<\/strong> Danish wind turbine maker Vestas said it expects rising costs from a backlog of wind turbine orders to bring down its full year earnings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-08-09\/vestas-warns-wind-turbine-backlog-still-dragging-down-earnings?srnd=green#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. This comes a month after a key supplier of blades to Vestas published an income warning on higher inspection and repair costs after it found faults with a blade type at one of its factories. It still expects full year earnings before interest and taxes to fall within the range -2% to 3%, marking an improvement from the -8% for last year. However, costs for an existing backlog soared to EUR 51.6 bn from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Vestas is no stranger to some in the region:<\/strong> An international consortium led by Vestas is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/68cee6d6-5517-4793-8ccb-cefea32b1955\">expected to begin operations<\/a> at its 250 MW wind farm in Egypt\u2019s Gulf of Suez by early 2024. It was named recently among companies <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52d66aae-fd63-45b8-8338-8198fde6f651\">planning to bid<\/a> for a five- to seven-year operation and maintenance contract for the 120 MW Gabal El Zeit 3 plant in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Others could be gone with the wind:<\/strong> Siemens Energy\u2019s wind turbine unit problem is not expected to recover before 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/siemens-energys-wind-division-expected-break-even-2026-jpm-deutsche-2023-08-09\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank analysts. The predictions come days after Siemens Energy <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/50cfad93-b263-4bd6-bec1-3c2066505c17\">revealed that the issue will cost EUR 2.2 bn for its Siemens Gamesa<\/a>. Deutsche Bank analyst Gael de-Bray has cut the price target for Siemens Energy to EUR 18 per share from EUR 20, maintaining a \u201chold\u201d rating, while JPMorgan downgraded the stock to \u201cneutral\u201d from \u201coverweight.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Brazil could be among the SAF kings:<\/strong> Brazil has the capabilities to become among the leading global players in sustainable aviation fuel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/aerospace-defense\/boeing-says-brazil-could-be-top-sustainable-aviation-fuel-player-2023-08-08\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing Boeing's Latin America and the Caribbean head Landon Loomis. \u201cBrazil has the technical capacity, qualified workforce and raw material to post the concrete results and impacts needed for us to solve together this global challenge of how to decarbonize aviation,\u201d Loomis said at a forum. His statements come as the aviation sector tries to meet <a href=\"https:\/\/airlines.iata.org\/2021\/12\/01\/2050-net-zero-carbon-emissions\">ambitious targets<\/a> to become carbon neutral by 2050 as set by IATA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> The EU has agreed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/73bdc340-7f9c-4518-b78d-3f4344260307\">earlier this year<\/a> to set binding targets for European aviation to boost its use of SAF in a bid to decarbonize the industry. The proposal aims to increase the use of SAF by ensuring fuel suppliers have 2% of the fuel accessible at EU airports as SAF in 2025, rising to 6% in 2030, 20% in 2035, and 70% in 2050. The EU carbon market is set to provide about EUR 2 bn to help airlines switch to SAF. Some 1.2% of fuels must also be synthetic fuels from 2030, rising to 35% in 2050. Aviation is a difficult sector to decarbonize and net zero aircrafts are not expected for another 10 years.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>DATA POINT #1- Companies are scaling up green energy investments: <\/strong>19% of global corporations have said they will increase their investments in clean energy and energy efficiency by more than half by 3Q 2024, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/8\/2746.pdf\">survey (pdf)<\/a> of 751 international firms carried out by Honeywell and The Futurum Group. 86% of respondents are increasing investments in sustainability-linked initiatives this quarter, and 67% of EMEA-based companies \u2014 which include firms out of the EU and MENA \u2014 cite sustainability-linked initiatives as their top corporate focus for the next six months. 87% of global respondents and 61% EMEA corporations cited enhancing energy evolution and power efficiency as their foremost corporate priority for the coming six months. 78% of EMEA firms have said they have set out 2030 goals for energy evolution and efficiency, 73% have set out a strategy for emissions reduction, 74% have for pollution prevention, and 71% have 2030 circularity\/recycling targets in place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DATA POINT #2-<\/strong><strong> Plastic litter in the oceans is overestimated, but still growing <\/strong><strong>y-o-y<\/strong>, a new study in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41561-023-01216-0\">Nature Geoscience<\/a> finds. Around 500k tons of plastic waste end up in the oceans each year, well below estimates from a 2015 study concluding that some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/13\/science\/earth\/plastic-ocean-waste-levels-going-up-study-says.html\">8 mn<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/02\/13\/science\/earth\/plastic-ocean-waste-levels-going-up-study-says.html\">metric<\/a> tons of plastic make their way to the oceans every year from rivers alone. However, marine pollution is still growing by around 4% y-o-y, the latest study finds. Incremental additions of plastic to global waterways lead to a significant accumulation of waste over time, the authors caution, noting that in two decades the current amount of 3 mn plastic tons on the global sea surface could double, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/07\/climate\/plastic-pollution-oceans.html\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>NON-CLIMATE REGIONAL HEADLINES:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>UAE:<\/strong> The Central Bank of the UAE has revoked the license of exchange house Dirham Exchange and canceled the registration of RMB Commercial Brokers Co over serious regulatory misconduct. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emaratalyoum.com\/business\/local\/2023-08-09-1.1773577\">Emarat Al Youm<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Saudi Arabia:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s aid agency KSRelief and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office have signed a joint agreement to provide USD 9.16 mn in assistance to those affected by the Sudanese crisis. (<a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/5cac2sat\">Asharq Al Awsat<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt:<\/strong> The number of tourists visiting Egypt rose by 46.6% y-o-y in 2022 to report 11.7 mn, according to statistics agency CAPMAS, as the country bets on the key sector to bring in much needed FX for the struggling economy. proposal<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Abu Dhabi-headquartered green fuels developer <a href=\"https:\/\/ociorenergy.com\/\">Ocior Energy<\/a> has signed preliminary agreements with the Egyptian government to build a USD 4 bn green hydrogen production plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), head of Commercial Services at Egypt\u2019s Trade and Industry Ministry Yehia El Wathiq Bellah told Enterprise Climate. The Indian company is expected to finalize the project agreement in coming months, Al Wathiq Bellah said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> Ocior \u2014 which will pour USD 800 mn in annual investments for the project \u2014 has already signed a land allocation agreement with the government, and the green hydrogen facility is expected to be completed in five to six years, El Wathiq Bellah told us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Powered by renewables, mark<\/strong><strong>ed for export: <\/strong>The Egyptian cabinet released a statement yesterday saying the plant\u2019s production capacity is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d13315b0-b05b-4df6-9052-5feb1165fcf7\">estimated at 400k tons per year<\/a> with production earmarked for export to Europe at an estimated value of USD 1 bn. The facility would source its power needs from 15 GW of solar energy, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The plans have been brewing: <\/strong>The company signed an MoU with Egypt\u2019s Electricity and Renewable Energy Ministry for the project in December, noting it is eyeing a production capacity of 100k tons of green hydrogen per year from its first phase by 2027 with an increase to 1 mn tons per annum when fully operational by 2030, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ociorenergy.com\/project-egypt\/\">statement<\/a> released at the time. Ocior chose to establish its green hydrogen plant in the Suez Canal due to its proximity to European markets, the company said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Ocior:<\/strong> The company has a target to deploy 4 GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2030, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/ocior-energy-holding-ltd\/?originalSubdomain=in\">notes<\/a>. Under the agreement, Hydrogen Systems will design, develop and install the refueling station in Muscat. No financial details or a timeline for launch of the project were provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s more refueling stations coming:<\/strong> Oman Shell and Oman Airports Management will set up solar-powered <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d9721ed2-5257-493b-9b97-e80971fb0807\">green hydrogen fueling stations<\/a> near Oman International Airport by 2024 as part of the first phase of the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d99ce063-6d7a-41b1-8659-77e810108347\">three-phase green mobility plan<\/a>. The plan aims to facilitate the use of hydrogen cells for heavy long-distance trucks, adding hydrogen fueling stations to existing gas stations, and setting necessary frameworks and legislation for future mobility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is way ahead with its projects:<\/strong> UAE\u2019s Adnoc <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ebb099ef-d557-4498-8f9d-ffef368fb2cc\">broke ground<\/a> on the Middle East\u2019s first high-speed hydrogen refueling station last month in Masdar City. The project is expected to be completed and operational this year. Adnoc is also set to fit a second station based in Dubai Golf City with a conventional hydrogen fueling system. The stations will be tested by a fleet of clean hydrogen-powered vehicles provided by Toyota and Al Futtaim Motors. The farm is expected to reach its full production volume in four years, the news agency quotes Deputy Minister Mahdi Farahi as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of larger solar plans: <\/strong>Iran\u2019s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (Satba) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eiu.com\/n\/iran-refocuses-on-renewable-energy-projects\/\">announced plans<\/a> earlier this year to re-tender solar energy projects yielding 2.2 GW during the current Iranian fiscal year in a bid to expand net-zero power production. From our neck of the woods, the UAE\u2019s AJ Holdings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presstv.ir\/Detail\/2021\/12\/08\/672236\/Iran-renewables-power-plant-UAE-Khuzestan\">signed an agreement<\/a> back in 2021 with Iranian utility company Khuzestan Regional Electric Co. to build a 300 MW solar plant in the province of Khuzestan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big renewables targets:<\/strong> Iran\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/solarquarter.com\/2023\/04\/17\/iran-sees-significant-growth-in-renewable-energy-generation-in-march\/\">renewables sector<\/a> \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tehrantimes.com\/news\/483751\/Capacity-of-Iran-s-renewable-power-plants-rises-0-9-in-a-month\">accounts for nearly 7%<\/a> of the country\u2019s total energy generation \u2014 relies mostly on solar, hydroelectric, and wind power plants to generate energy. Its net loss narrowed to USD 1.2 bn in 2Q 2023, from USD 1.7 bn during the same quarter last year. The company reported an adjusted net loss per share of USD 1.08, better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/rivian-stock-earnings-production-forecast-af989a00\">Wall Street estimates of USD 1.43<\/a> a share for Rivian.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robust revenues:<\/strong> Revenues were up 67.5% y-o-y bringing in USD 1.12 bn, up from USD 364 mn in the corresponding quarter last year. The boost came on the back of a rise in quarterly sales.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solid production and deliveries:<\/strong> Rivian said it produced 13.9k vehicles and delivered 12.6k vehicles during the second quarter of the year, representing a 50% rise in production in comparison with the previous quarter. The increase was backed by the continued ramp of its in-house production of its Enduro motor line to support its commercial vehicle line as well as single motor variants and its dual-motor R1 variants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did they do it?<\/strong> Rivian took several steps earlier this year to cut expenditures and bolster its balance sheet. Those include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/01\/rivian-to-lay-off-six-percent-of-workforce-ev-price-war.html\">6% cut in workforce in February<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bc3db30e-721f-418d-afea-36acddd5e39b\">USD 1.3 bn sale of convertible notes<\/a> in March. Robotic arms, programmed to sort through tons of waste, are able to identify specific materials and recover 10 to 30% more than traditional methods, CEO of EverestLabs JD Ambati told CNBC. One method used by EverestLabs is installing 3D depth-sensing cameras on recycling conveyor lines to identify the items on the conveyor. Canadian dairy farmer Ben Loewith artificially inseminated the cows and heifers in June with the first-to-market bull semen containing a low-methane genetic trait. Genetics company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.semex.com\/\">Semex<\/a>, who sold Loewith the semen, said adoption of the low-methane trait could reduce methane emissions from Canada's dairy herd by 1.5% annually, and up to 20% to 30% by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did they do it? <\/strong>The breeding material is the product of a partnership between Semex, Canada's milk-recording agency <a href=\"https:\/\/lactanet.ca\/en\/home\/\">Lactanet<\/a>, and research carried out by University of Guelph and University of Alberta, the newswire writes. Lactanet drew on seven years of research capturing the exhalations of cattle to measure them for methane, and then compared the data against genetic information and milk samples. \u201cThe breakthrough here is linking these different components to have a national breeding value estimation for methane emissions based on real breath of animals,\u201d one of the scientists that worked on the project told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global interest, but there are some critics:<\/strong> Semex has already sold some of its products to farms in Britain and dairies in the US and Slovakia, the newswire reports. Some dairy industry officials, however, remain unconvinced about low-methane breeding, saying it could lead to digestion problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there are other ways to address the problem:<\/strong> New Zealand is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/interactive\/2023\/new-zealand-cows-burps-methane-tax\">taxing farmers for<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/interactive\/2023\/new-zealand-cows-burps-methane-tax\">methane from cattle<\/a> starting 2025, and food and drinks conglomerate Restaurant Brands International is feeding cattle <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/12\/07\/quick-fix-for-cow-burps-methane-emissions-90526\/\">less methane-producing foods<\/a>. Additionally, multilateral organizations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resourcepanel.org\/reports\/assessing-environmental-impacts-consumption-and-production\">the UN<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4147410\/pdf\/BLT.14.020814.pdf\/\">World Health Organization<\/a> agree that reducing the number of cattle by encouraging people to adopt more
