The partnership aims to help slash emissions and boost sustainability through a transparent and reliable carbon credits platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have more details on this story and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Fusion power <\/strong><strong>breakthrough, <\/strong><strong>take 2: <\/strong>Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California have reported a net energy gain from a nuclear fusion reaction experiment for the second time.The second fusion ignition breakthrough generated a higher yield than <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1df0a58a-0ffe-41cb-b95d-357a52520b2b\">the first experiment last year<\/a>, which produced 3.15 megajoules of output from the initial input of 2.05 megajoules of power, a Lawrence Livermore spokesperson said, adding that the final results are still being analyzed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART-<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/what-is-nuclear-fusion#:~:text=Nuclear%20fusion%20is%20the%20process,releasing%20massive%20amounts%20of%20energy.\">Fusion reactions<\/a> involve the fusing of two light atomic nuclei using lasers to release more energy from fusion than the laser energy used to produce it. The fusing process results in the formation of a single, heavier nucleus, with the leftover mass from the smaller nuclei\u2019s fusion being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science\/doe-explainsnuclear-fusion-reactions#:~:text=Nuclear%20Fusion%20reactions%20power%20the,The%20leftover%20mass%20becomes%20energy.\">converted into carbon-free power<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Huge energy potential:<\/strong> Nuclear fusion could generate four times more power per kg of fuel than fission reactions \u2014 which see nuclei split to release large amounts of energy in the form of heat and radiation \u2014 and nearly four mn times more energy than burning oil or coal, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/newscenter\/news\/what-is-nuclear-fusion#:~:text=Fusion%20could%20generate%20four%20times,than%20burning%20oil%20or%20coal.\">International Atomic Energy Agency<\/a> (IAEA) explains. The power source \u201ccould provide virtually limitless clean, safe, and affordable energy to meet the world\u2019s demand,\u201d according to IAEA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The road is long and costly though: <\/strong>Energy companies looking to set up nuclear fusion power plants will need to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bf857ebc-5d5f-475e-b713-94b18be2867a\">invest approximately USD 7 bn<\/a> to realize their targets. Scientists and researchers have cautioned that it will likely be decades before the technology is commercially viable \u2014 if ever. Madbouly and his Jordanian counterpart Bisher Khasawneh also discussed boosting the power interconnection capacity between the two countries up to 2 GW over several phases, allowing the transmission of renewable power to other countries. Madbouly\u2019s statements came during the joint Higher Committee meeting between Egypt and Jordan in Amman yesterday, where officials signed 12 MoUs to bolster bilateral ties, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3jcrdj67\">statement<\/a> by the Egyptian Cabinet.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Has Qatar grabbed shares in India\u2019s Adani Green? <\/strong>The Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) has reportedly bought shares worth USD 500 mn in India\u2019s Adani Green Energy, Indian newspaper the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ETNOWlive\/status\/1688459385738309632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1688459385738309632%7Ctwgr%5E658fca9b1ff84b81eeeeacbc151ea25444096fef%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Fbusiness%2Fenergy%2Fqia-likely-picks-up-shares-worth-500-mln-indias-adani-green-report-2023-08-07%2F\">Economic Times<\/a> reports, citing people it says have knowledge of the matter. The purchase was likely made through a block transaction that involved the sale of 3% of Adani\u2019s green energy arm, the sources said. If confirmed, the investment by QIA would provide a lifeline for Adani after a report by Hindenburg Research alleged fraud <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/feb\/03\/adani-crisis-indian-group-has-value-cut-in-half-after-stock-market-rout\">earlier this year<\/a>, battering investor confidence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- We could be seeing more green bonds from Masdar <\/strong><strong>sooner <\/strong><strong>than expected:<\/strong> Renewables giant Masdar is planning a secondary listing of its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/53701f25-7e73-45d7-abeb-3a954978d785\">green bond offering<\/a> on the ADX later this year, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.masdar.ae\/en\/Press-Release?News\/2023\/08\/07\/11\/21\/Masdar-Marks-Roadmap-to-US$3-billion\">statement<\/a>. While no specific time frame was provided, this is sooner than previous comments made about offerings coming in 2024. It said proceeds from all bond offerings under the program will be directed towards \u201cthe greenest projects\u201d including solar, wind, renewable power transmission and others. (MoCCAE) has signed an agreement with UAE\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.industrialinnovationgroup.com\/\">Industrial Innovation Group<\/a> and US blockchain firm <a href=\"https:\/\/venom.foundation\/\">Venom Foundation<\/a> to set up the world\u2019s first national carbon credits system using blockchain technology, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303184757\">Wam<\/a> reports. The partnership aims to help slash emissions and boost sustainability through a transparent and reliable carbon credits platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> Under the MoU, the three parties will develop basic approaches and specific technological solutions to establish a global platform for the registration and issuance of carbon credits in the UAE. The collaboration will focus on developing a legislative and regulatory framework by the MoCCAE to set up a national system for issuing and registering carbon credits, including the creation of a licensed platform and leveraging blockchain technology to ensure a reliable production of carbon credit registration system documents. It will also guarantee system integration to help with the process of issuing and registering carbon credits. The platform will also allow for the evaluation of projects to lower carbon emissions to help achieve the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d4ad8a2e-befa-4a9e-94cb-0e5237f6f492\">recently updated NDCs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The trio will also work on other areas:<\/strong> The MoU also covers work on green investments, climate change adaptation, a climate neutrality strategy and more, Wam reports. It will also seek to promote energy efficiency, renewable energy, waste-to-energy facilities, green technology, and green transport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is on board with carbon credit trading:<\/strong> The UAE said it <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a2d5d5a8-a4e7-48d5-a1a7-a8ab9f5d1ca4\">plans to launch<\/a> regulating carbon credit trading exchanges and clearing houses ahead of COP28. In June, the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e2f2016c-930f-4150-83e4-11d44182e14f\">launched the UAE Carbon Alliance<\/a> in partnership with Singapore-based carbon trading exchange AirCarbon Exchange (ACX) in a bid to establish a framework for carbon markets. The alliance was launched a year after the Abu Dhabi Global Market said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adgm.com\/media\/announcements\/abu-dhabi-to-launch-first-regulated-carbon-credit-trading-exchange-and-clearing-house-in-the-world\">it was working with ACX<\/a> on launching the world\u2019s first fully regulated carbon trading exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s part of a growing regional trend:<\/strong> Earlier this month, Doha-based Global Carbon Council (GCC) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1cbe4349-9e39-4496-9d85-7de663c66c1f\">signed an MoU<\/a> with the Climate Change Center (CCC), a South Korean non-profit organization specializing in climate change responses, to expand the voluntary carbon market (VCM) in South Korea and MENA. Saudi Arabia\u2019s Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) \u2014 established by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the Saudi Tadawul Group \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/95960906-4e15-4ecb-8c7c-2cd4bd1841d6\">plans to launch<\/a> a carbon trading exchange early next year. The announcement came as the RVCMC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a86c6cf4-8b17-4320-a2af-33c23bf7d8ab\">sold 2 mn tons of carbon credits<\/a> in June in what the company described as the largest-ever voluntary carbon credit auction. Hailed as an effective carbon mitigation solution to the climate crisis by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/stories\/mangroves-as-a-solution-to-the-climate-crisis#:~:text=The%20amount%20of%20carbon%20stored,the%20fight%20against%20climate%20change.\">World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)<\/a>, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar are jumping on the bandwagon with mangrove planting initiatives \u2014 but how does it work and why is it important?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nature\u2019s carbon sink: <\/strong>Mangroves \u2014 which have 60 different species \u2014 only grow along waterlogged coastlines near the equator due to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/what-we-do\/our-insights\/perspectives\/state-of-world-mangroves\/\">vulnerability to cold weather<\/a> and can sequester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/04\/can-blue-carbon-make-offsetting-work-these-pioneers-think-so\">10x more carbon<\/a> than other forests in the sediment, roots, and branches surrounding them. In our neck of the woods, two mangrove species \u2014 Avicennia marina and Asiatic mangrove \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/258836256_Mangrove_ecosystem_of_southern_Red_Sea_Coast_of_Saudi_Arabia\">grow along the Red Sea coast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restoration efforts:<\/strong> The rapid development of the shrimp aquaculture industry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/explore\/videos\/biodiversity\/mangroves#:~:text=By%20far%20the%20greatest%20threat,are%20densely%20stocked%20with%20shrimp.\">usurped<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/explore\/videos\/biodiversity\/mangroves#:~:text=By%20far%20the%20greatest%20threat,are%20densely%20stocked%20with%20shrimp.\">hundreds of thousands of mangrove acres<\/a> to make room for artificial ponds, and pollution from fertilizers and pesticides runoff and improper disposal of wastes contributed to the loss of over a quarter of mangrove forests in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2020\/nasa-study-maps-the-roots-of-global-mangrove-loss#:~:text=If%20you%20have%20areas%20where,in%20the%20past%2050%20years.\">the past five decades<\/a>. In our region, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ead.gov.ae\/-\/media\/Project\/EAD\/EAD\/Documents\/Resources\/Mangrove-In-Abu-Dhabi-Emirate.pdf\">direct human activities<\/a> including coastal developments, land conversion, and sea-level rise on the back of climate change all impacted the health of our mangrove population. In a bid to dial back the damage and right the ship, a USD 4 bn protection package was announced during COP27 under the <a href=\"https:\/\/climatechampions.unfccc.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/SeS-Adaptation-Agenda_Complete-Report-COP27_FINAL-1.pdf\">Sharm El Sheikh Adaptation Agenda (pdf)<\/a> due to the coastal trees being considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/what-we-do\/our-insights\/perspectives\/state-of-world-mangroves\/#:~:text=Mangroves%20are%20also%20biodiversity%20superstars,drier%20parts%20of%20the%20habitat.\">biodiversity superstars<\/a> based on their ability to host some 341 threatened species.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mangroves are worth investing in: <\/strong>Mangroves could generate USD 1 tn in net benefit for climate adaptation by 2030 if conservation efforts are stepped up fast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldwildlife.org\/blogs\/sustainability-works\/posts\/investing-in-mangroves-to-protect-people\">WWF<\/a> notes. Carbon mitigation aside, mangrove forests also serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-020-61136-6\">first line of defense<\/a> against flooding and erosion, providing more than USD 80 bn in avoided losses annually and protecting some 18 mn people from the effects of climate change, the organization adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is betting big on the coastal trees:<\/strong> The Emirates plans to plant <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/da7b3ab0-8301-46e8-b30e-43958f7df5f7\">100 mn mangroves<\/a>as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moccae.gov.ae\/en\/media-center\/news\/17\/12\/2022\/ministry-of-climate-change-and-environment-launches-the-roadmap-for-the-national-carbon-sequestration-project-in-the-uae.aspx\">Roadmap for National Carbon Sequestration<\/a>. The project \u2014 carried out by the country\u2019s Climate Change and Environment Ministry in collaboration with the private sector and international NGOs \u2014 will increase the number of mangroves to 100 mn from 30 mn in a bid to create a carbon sink to sequester carbon. UAE-based business conglomerate Essa Al Ghurair also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a160258e-c19b-444c-b2f7-7d0a68ae1502\">inked an agreement<\/a> with the UAE\u2019s Climate Change and Environment Ministry to plant between 500k-1 mn mangrove tree seedlings in the next decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia is following suit: <\/strong>The Saudi Arabian government has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2008876\/saudi-arabia\">an ambitious target<\/a> to plant some 10 bn mangrove trees under its USD 186 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greeninitiatives.gov.sa\/\">Saudi and Middle East Green Initiatives<\/a> \u2014 which it launched in 2022. Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redseaglobal.com\/\">Red Sea Global<\/a>, a global multi-project developer fully owned by Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund the Public Investment Fund, opened its first <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2ed60ca0-171c-4499-a32b-5e6073f976a1\">dedicated mangrove nursery<\/a> and plans to plant 50 mn mangrove trees by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The rest of the region is also onboard: <\/strong>Oman\u2019s Environment Authority is planting mangrove seeds in the North Batinah, South Batinah, South Sharqiyah, and Al Wusta governorates as part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muscatdaily.com\/2023\/08\/02\/omans-environment-authority-to-plant-2mn-mangrove-seeds-by-august-14\/\">2 mn mangroves forestation target<\/a> by mid-August. Similarly, the Qatari government <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/43894749-d2b6-42a4-9cd7-42d169540804\">has been earmarking<\/a> capital since 2019 to up local mangrove plantation capacity, and recorded last year an increase in the surface area of mangrove swamps to 14k sqm from 9k sqm. Over in Bahrain, the government is <a href=\"https:\/\/unhabitat.org\/news\/13-mar-2023\/hsbc-un-habitat-partner-to-save-bahrains-mangroves\">looking to partner<\/a> with the UN Habitat program and banking company HSBC on a two-year rehabilitation and restoration aimed at quadrupling mangrove plantations in the country by 2035 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/unesdoc.unesco.org\/ark:\/48223\/pf0000382134\">current 0.8 square kilometers<\/a>. Further afield, Iraq is partnering with the United Nations on a program that will see it plant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/iraq-plants-mangrove-forest-fight-climate-disaster-2023-06-29\/\">4 mn mangrove<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/iraq-plants-mangrove-forest-fight-climate-disaster-2023-06-29\/\">s<\/a> in the Khor Al-Zubair mudflats region \u2014 near major oil fields \u2014 in a bid to push down its emissions and alleviate the effects of climate change. The shipping industry emits almost 3% of the world\u2019s greenhouse gasses, The Guardian said, citing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imo.org\/en\/OurWork\/Environment\/Pages\/Fourth-IMO-Greenhouse-Gas-Study-2020.aspx\">2020 study<\/a> published by the International Maritime Organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could the transition to hydrogen-powered be feasible? <\/strong>43% of the cargo voyages made on the shipping corridor between China and the US could be fueled by hydrogen without any modifications for fuel or refueling, the <a href=\"https:\/\/theicct.org\/publication\/refueling-assessment-of-a-zero-emission-container-corridor-between-china-and-the-united-states-could-hydrogen-replace-fossil-fuels\/\">International Council on Clean Transportation<\/a> (ICCT) says. Nearly all voyages on this route could be hydrogen-fuelled with some minor tweaks including expanding cargo space by 5% to stock up on more hydrogen fuel or adding a port of call for refueling en route, ICCT adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But storage still poses the trickiest barrier: <\/strong>If the hydrogen is in gas form, high-pressure containers are needed to store it. If in liquid form, the fuel will have to be stored in extremely low temperatures of almost -153 \u00b0C. The waste is transformed through multiple processes to make denim clothing for a number of companies including Outa \u2014 a couture brand that made its debut at Tunis Fashion Week last June.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> Fifteen informal rubbish collectors in Tunisia\u2019s Kerkennah Islands first take their daily harvest to a sorter, who subsequently passes it on to a collection company where it is fed to a crusher. The plastic granules recovered after grinding the waste are then transformed into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaqual.org\/seaqual-yarn\/\">Seaqual Yarn<\/a> nylon fiber in a plant in Portugal \u2014 one of just four factories in the world equipped with this technology. The Seaqual Yarn is delivered to a Sitex plant \u2014 a denim supplier that has 70% of its manufacturing based on recycled fibers \u2014 in the coastal town of Ksar Hellal in Tunisia to produce denim.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Outa will have to consider some barriers: <\/strong>Production costs are 20% higher for denim with recycled marine plastics compared to normal denim without, according to AFP. Renowned French designer Maud Beneteau \u2014 who designed Outa\u2019s first collection \u2014 told AFP that there were some difficulties working with a fabric that was \u201ca little thick and stiff, originally designed for sportswear and ready-to-wear, rather than haute couture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Kerkennah Plastic Free program:<\/strong> The program aims to recover 7k tons of plastic waste each year on the Kerkennah Islands located 20 km off the port city of Sfax, AFP said. The island is heavily polluted due to marine currents carrying the waste from Europe into the Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia. The program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seaqual.org\/projects\/seaqual-initiative-kerkennah\/\">partnered with Seaqual<\/a> last year to export and transform marine plastic from the Kerkennah Islands into
