It\u2019s aiming to secure the initial capital raise for the close-ended fund in 3Q 2023, subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have more details on this story and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Typhoon madness in the <\/strong><strong>Philippines: <\/strong>At least two people were killed and thousands displaced as Typhoon Doksuri pounded the northern Philippines. The arrival of the super typhoon caused heavy rains, landslides, and power cuts as it intensified in strength. Over 180k people in the country have been impacted by the typhoon, according to the Office of Civil Defense, with dozens of towns facing blackouts. The typhoon, which officials have warned of as the worst storm in a decade, is expected to make its way near Taiwan before making a landfall in China on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Climate change isn\u2019t helping: <\/strong>The Philippines is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/country\/philippines\/brief\/towards-a-comprehensive-disaster-risk-management-system-for-the-philippines#:~:text=The%20Philippines%20is%20one%20of,pandemics%20are%20exacerbating%20those%20risks.\">one of the most disaster-prone countries<\/a> in the world, susceptible to a world record of typhoons every year. Climate change is causing typhoons to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/B9780128120569000245\">grow stronger and deadlier<\/a> due to higher sea surface temperatures and subsurface temperature, which remove the natural barrier on typhoon strength created when cold water up wells from below the ocean\u2019s surface. These stronger typhoons carry more moisture, move faster, and will be aggravated by sea level rise \u2014 one of the most certain consequences of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doksuri grabbed headlines in the international press: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/typhoon-doksuri-lashes-philippines-threatens-taiwan-china-2023-07-26\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-07-25\/typhoon-cuts-power-in-north-philippines-taiwan-adds-more-alerts\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/philippine-typhoon-doksuri-flooding-d947d242dbea944a28c5d65628af91b2\">The Associated Press<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/25\/asia\/philippines-typhoon-doksuri-egay-landfall-intl-hnk\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/typhoon-doksuri-philippines-china.html\">The New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- A new green hydrogen company in Egypt? <\/strong>The board of directors of Egypt\u2019s state-owned Misr Fertilizers Production Company (Mopco) have approved setting up a green hydrogen production company with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) and Norway\u2019s Scatec, according to an <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/7\/1501.pdf\">EGX disclosure (pdf)<\/a>. The hydrogen produced by the company will be used to power green ammonia plants, the statement said. Mopco, Echem, and Scatec\u2019s shares in the newly established firm are yet to be determined.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> In May, Scatec <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7629fcfd-890d-432d-8556-bbfd2e38b2a1\">signed a joint development agreement<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b7089f22-eb65-4418-81c1-c5fb17e42672\">USD 5.5 bn green<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b7089f22-eb65-4418-81c1-c5fb17e42672\">ammonia plant<\/a> in Ain Sokhna with Echem and Mopco. Scatec <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/952ee209-52e7-435e-860b-caf16ba6251b\">began commissioning<\/a> the first phase of its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3b3e6cad-637c-4ca8-afe6-94472fcc12d4\">100 MW green hydrogen plant<\/a> in Egypt\u2019s Ain Sokhna with SFE, OCI-Adnoc joint venture Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction in November.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- These heatwaves won\u2019t taper off soon: <\/strong>Extreme heat is likely to continue into August in some parts of the Mediterranean, according to a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/news\/heatwaves-wildfires-mark-summer-of-extremes\">statement<\/a>. The Mediterranean Sea\u2019s surface temperatures will remain exceptionally high in coming weeks \u2014 exceeding 30\u00b0C in some parts \u2014 and stay over 4\u00b0C above average in large parts of the western Mediterranean, the statement notes. Tunisia, Algeria, France, Greece, Italy and Spain have reported new maximum daytime and overnight station temperature records. It said it targets to secure the initial capital raise for the close-ended fund in 3Q 2023, subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> The fund will finance climate mitigation and adaptation projects, with a focus on mangrove restoration, reforestation, and biochar, according to the statement. It will seek projects particularly in Africa and Southeast Asia \u201cto contribute to both environmental conservation and sustainable economic development,\u201d the statement said. Over 50 projects in 29 countries have been identified to form the fund\u2019s investment pipeline, it added, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon credits in the pipeline:<\/strong> Offset8 will adhere to the <a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/the-core-carbon-principles\/\">Core Carbon Principles<\/a> set by the <a href=\"https:\/\/icvcm.org\/\">Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market<\/a> for producing high-quality carbon credits from the projects it invests in, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And they\u2019re already courting offtakers:<\/strong> The firm has held talks with potential counterparts in Japan and other unnamed countries where main credit buyers are based, it said, expecting them to \u201cact as off-takers of the carbon credit that the fund is expected to receive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is Offset8 Capital? <\/strong>Offset8 is an asset management company focused on decarbonization projects in the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia, according to its <a href=\"https:\/\/offset8capital.com\/\">website<\/a>. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/offset8capital.com\/projects\">projects portfolio<\/a> include carbon removal projects and Market Liquidity and<\/p>\n<p>Technology Infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is on board with carbon credit trading:<\/strong> The UAE <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a2d5d5a8-a4e7-48d5-a1a7-a8ab9f5d1ca4\">plans to launch<\/a> regulating carbon credit trading exchanges and clearing houses ahead of COP28. In June, the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e2f2016c-930f-4150-83e4-11d44182e14f\">launched the UAE Carbon Alliance<\/a> in partnership with Singapore-based carbon trading exchange AirCarbon Exchange (ACX) in a bid to establish a framework for carbon markets. The alliance was launched a year after the Abu Dhabi Global Market said it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adgm.com\/media\/announcements\/abu-dhabi-to-launch-first-regulated-carbon-credit-trading-exchange-and-clearing-house-in-the-world\">was working with ACX<\/a>on launching the world\u2019s first fully regulated carbon trading exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s part of a regional trend:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) \u2014 established by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the Saudi Tadawul Group \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/95960906-4e15-4ecb-8c7c-2cd4bd1841d6\">plans to launch<\/a> a carbon trading exchange early next year. The announcement came as the RVCMC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a86c6cf4-8b17-4320-a2af-33c23bf7d8ab\">sold 2 mn tons of carbon credits<\/a> in June in what the company described as the largest-ever voluntary carbon credit auction. The formal launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance is scheduled to take place at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.g20.org\/en\/g20-india-2023\/new-delhi-summit\/\">G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit<\/a> in New Delhi next September.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Others want to follow in the UAE\u2019s footsteps:<\/strong> Nineteen countries expressed their interest in being part of the alliance\u2019s initiating members, the <a href=\"https:\/\/m.timesofindia.com\/india\/field-to-fuel-19-countries-join-india-to-launch-global-biofuels-alliance\/articleshow\/102047254.cms\">Times of India<\/a> reported, without disclosing the country names. Over a dozen countries participated at the ministerial meeting, including Argentina, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, India, Italy, Kenya, Mauritius, Paraguay, Seychelles, the UAE, Uganda, and the US, according to the IEA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IEA suggests three priority areas for the new alliance: <\/strong>The IEA published a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/7\/1502.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> offering insights for the Global Biofuel Alliance by analyzing biofuel policy insights from Brazil, India and the US. The report suggests the alliance focus on three priority areas: identifying and helping develop markets with high potential for sustainable biofuels production, accelerating technology deployment, and seeking consensus on performance-based sustainability assessments and frameworks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why have biofuels been sidelined in the energy transition?<\/strong> The IEA estimates that global sustainable biofuels production would need to triple by 2030 to meet global net zero emission goals by 2050. Biofuel roll out has been constrained by challenges such as the availability of the feedstock used to make biofuels, the lack of consensus on sustainability criteria, and the pace at which related technology has been commercialized, it added. Production capacities could be expanded through designing long-term strategies, fostering investment, supporting innovation, securing affordable supplies, and encouraging collaboration from international partners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UAE\u2019s interest in biofuels is on the rise: <\/strong>Earlier this month, BP <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/65ae4348-b5f2-4c24-b416-a772c4b76c6b\">invested USD 10 mn<\/a> in US startup WasteFuel to support its establishment of a UAE-based biofuels plant with a capacity of 100k barrels of the green fuel per day. UAE\u2019s Tadweer <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/37f9e2c5-6143-4b86-ae8a-e0f88c5da13c\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Austria-based integrated oil and gas company OMV to explore investments in biofuels and biowaste production. The financials of the acquisition were not disclosed, and Iberdrola will retain a majority share of 51%. Masdar was named as a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/465625cf-fc33-4654-95d5-2079452ffd0b\">top contender vying for the stake<\/a> in the 476 MW farm earlier this month along with Swiss fund <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-infrastructure-partners.com\/offerings\/swiss-energy-infrastructure\/\">Energy Infrastructure Partners (EIP)<\/a> and Australian asset manager Macquarie\u2019s clean investment arm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greeninvestmentgroup.com\/\">Green Investment Group (GIG)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>Baltic Eagle is currently being built off Germany\u2019s northeastern coast and will comprise 50 wind turbines, each with a 9.53 MW generation capacity. The project \u2014 which is slated to kick off initial operations by the end of 2024 \u2014 will produce 1.9 TWh of clean energy once it achieves full production capacity, providing renewable power to some 475k homes and offsetting c. 800k tons of carbon emissions annually. 100% of Baltic Eagle\u2019s production volume has already been sold via long-term offtake agreements, Masdar notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not Masdar\u2019s first foray into Europe\u2019s clean energy market:<\/strong> The Mubadala-owned firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-22\/uniper-masdar-green-hydrogen?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Germany\u2019s Uniper last December to develop a green hydrogen plant in the UAE powered by 1.3 GW of solar energy. The plant is expected to generate green hydrogen by 2026 and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f80ba49e-4780-4fba-b4dc-ceca09801618\">the EU wants to import<\/a> the clean fuel the facility will generate. Later in February, Masdar <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/99df014e-1726-4272-a3ff-1f26afb4c7ab\">inked an MoU<\/a> with Austrian utilities company Verbund to produce and export green hydrogen to Central European countries, with a focus on Austria and Southern Germany.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Iberdrola has a renewables and green fuels investment strategy:<\/strong> The sale of shares in Baltic Eagle is part of Iberdrola\u2019s strategy to finance its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iberdrola.com\/about-us\/iberdrola-strategic-plan\">EUR 47 bn investment plan<\/a>, which will see it allocate EUR 17 bn to offshore wind projects in France, Germany, the UK, and the US, earmarking EUR 11.7 bn to install onshore wind farms and EUR 11.2 bn to build onshore solar energy plants. Iberdrola expects to exceed 80 GW of installed renewables capacity by 2030 on the back of planned investments ranging from EUR 65-75 bn between 2026 and 2030. this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An ongoing study: <\/strong>University of Cambridge researcher Jahmaine Yambing is analyzing some 20 mn tons of discarded slag by the former Consett steelworks in the UK to ascertain how much carbon the heap had stored since the steel manufacturing plant shuttered four decades ago, according to the news outlet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>The multi-state calcium silicate, free calcium oxide and magnesium oxide found in steel slag can react rapidly with CO2 to form stable calcium carbonate and calcium silicate hydrate, which can significantly absorb carbon from the atmosphere, according to research published by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1385894722060326\">Science Direct<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slag could also benefit the green cement sector:<\/strong> Some 400 mn tons of slag are produced annually, and while some of it is used in construction as road aggregates, for example, a majority of global slag volumes are discarded, the news outlet notes.
