must-reads is our explainer on El Ni\u00f1o<\/strong> and what the extreme weather pattern means for our neck of the woods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Renewables giant Acwa Power inked an agreement with Egypt\u2019s New and Renewable Energy Authority to allocate 3k sqm of land in Sohag for its 10 GW wind project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have more details on this story and much more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY- Egypt is kicking off the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptminingforum.com\/\">Egypt Mining Forum<\/a><\/strong><strong> today in Cairo.<\/strong> The event \u2014 organized by the country\u2019s Oil Ministry \u2014 will gather regional players as well as global mining firms in a bid to attract regional and foreign direct investments in the country\u2019s mining industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Another week, another scorching<\/strong><strong> heatwave:<\/strong> The world continues to reel from <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/news\/wmo-monitoring-potential-new-temperature-records\">extreme high temperatures<\/a> engulfing the Mediterranean, with scientists indicating that the 1.5\u00b0C global warming threshold is moving beyond reach. As a heatwave persists in North Africa, temperatures in Europe are expected to come close to or even surpass the continent\u2019s record high temperature of 48.8\u00b0C recorded in 2021, the European Space Agency has warned. While the value of the financial support to Tunisia is yet to be announced, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in June that the Commission was considering up to EUR 900 mn in macro-financial aid, plus \u201cup to EUR 150 mn in budget support\u201d directly, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-migration-deal-tunisia-migrants-africa-european-commission\/\">Politico<\/a>. The agreement is yet to be ratified by the European Commission, which is scheduled to happen before the end of this year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tap.info.tn\/en\/Portal-Top-News-EN\/16462272-dutch-pm-mou\">Tunis Africa Press Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tunisia has been on a fundraising spree: <\/strong>The USAID-backed Tunisian Private Sector Energy Transition Support Program (Power Tunisia) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/14be7f77-4664-4110-8104-eaa62dbc0a33\">signed an agreement<\/a> last week to offer subsidies and technical assistance to private companies in the country to help back their green transition. Last month, the World Bank Group signed off on a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/8bbf89db-f63d-4288-a4f3-3ba1c53e1834\">USD 268.4 mn<\/a> loan to help Tunisia finance its planned electrical interconnection project with Italy, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/20894266-b034-4699-a9ad-ad758054bf2a\">EUR 113.6 mn<\/a> loan agreement to back the country\u2019s Sanitation Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Support project. The Saudi developer will receive a 3k sq-km plot of land in Sohag in Upper Egypt. Acwa <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/866d0721-9205-4641-bcd0-b61100d2abec\">inked an initial MoU<\/a> for the project with Egypt\u2019s New and Renewable Energy Authority and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) on the sidelines of the COP27 summit in November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The project in numbers: <\/strong>The wind farm will be one of the largest in the world when it\u2019s operational, coming second only to China\u2019s planned 20 GW Gansu project. The Acwa project will eliminate some 25.5 mn tons of emissions a year and provide electricity to some 11 mn households, creating 120k jobs, according to the statement. The estimated cost of the project was not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nothing is set in stone: <\/strong>ACWA will conduct feasibility studies for the project ahead of signing the final contracts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acwa already has a significant presence in Egypt\u2019s renewable sector<\/strong>, including through its 200 MW <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/320d303f-9f12-4b87-b16f-4cbe5615b532\">Kom Ombo solar power plant<\/a>, which last April got USD 114 mn in backing from a consortium of international lenders led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Kishida\u2019s GCC tour \u2014 which includes a visit to Qatar today \u2014 comes as Japan seeks to secure energy supplies and offer the Japanese know-how for green tech, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/japans-kishida-visit-middle-east-talk-energy-markets-offer-green-tech-2023-07-13\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An ambitious tie-up with Saudi Arabia:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia and Japan signed 26 MoUs and investment agreements in several priority sectors including green and traditional energy, environment, technology and others, <a href=\"https:\/\/sp.spa.gov.sa\/viewstory.php?lang=en&newsid=2471011\">SPA<\/a> reports. The MoUs were signed in Jeddah during the Saudi-Japanese roundtable meeting attended by Kishida and Saudi Investment Minister Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Falih and representatives of 44 Japanese companies. Recent research has shown that its impacts are likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/research.noaa.gov\/2020\/11\/09\/new-research-volume-explores-future-of-enso-under-influence-of-climate-change\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CExtreme%20El%20Ni%C3%B1o%20and%20La,stronger%20than%20they%20are%20today.%E2%80%9D\">hit harder and more frequently<\/a> as the planet continues to heat up and global surface temperatures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/weather\/learn-about\/weather\/oceans\/el-nino#:~:text=The%20name%20'El%2520Ni%25C3%25B1o'%2520is,above%2520the%2520long%252Dterm%2520average.\">will rise by about 0.1 \u00b0C<\/a> during the years the phenomenon occurs, with some scientists warning global average temperatures could tip off the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jun\/02\/el-nino-may-push-heating-past-15c-urgent-action-avert-catastrophe\">1.5 \u00b0C limit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As the effects of El Ni\u00f1o become more severe and far reaching for mns of people and <\/strong><strong>various ecosystems<\/strong>, interest in understanding how it affects food availability, fisheries, wildfires, coral bleaching, extreme rainfall, and other components of the climate system has grown. Countries are looking for ways to adapt and build resilience to mitigate the impacts on those occurrences. In part one of this two-part explainer, we discuss with experts what to expect in terms of weather-induced changes in our region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019re experiencing El Ni\u00f1o after a four-year absence: <\/strong>\u201cStrong anomalies in the central and eastern Pacific regions have already been identified, and they are becoming stronger every day,\u201d climate researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ictp.it\/\">International Centre for Theoretical Physics<\/a> Muhammad Abid told Enterprise Climate, adding that its cascading effects usually peak in the winter months. Climate scientist and head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ku.ac.ae\/engeos\">Environmental and Geophysical Sciences Lab<\/a> at Dubai\u2019s Khalifa University Diana Francis told us this will be a strong El Ni\u00f1o year, pointing out that last month was already recognized as the warmest June on record, \u201ceven before the impacts of El Ni\u00f1o start to be felt worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how exactly does El Ni\u00f1o occur? <\/strong>In normal years, the permanent winds moving from east-to-west around the Earth\u2019s equatorial region \u2014 called trade winds \u2014 push warm surface waters in the eastern Pacific westwards, away from Central and South America and towards South East Asia and Australia, Abid explains. This makes surface water temperatures in the west relatively warmer than in the east. However, when the trade winds become weaker than normal, warm waters accumulate in the east and \u201ccreate a patch of warmth over the tropical Pacific,\u201d Francis explains. This breaks the neutral cycle in the Pacific and triggers El Ni\u00f1o. With the cycle reversed, the warm air initially accumulating near Asia and Australia, shifts towards Central and South America, making the former wetter than usual, and the latter dryer than usual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It's part of a larger phenomenon: <\/strong>While El Ni\u00f1o often steals the spotlight given its role in exacerbating global warming, it is considered the \u201cwarm phase\u201d of the bigger El Ni\u00f1o-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) atmospheric occurrence. The \u201ccool phase\u201d is represented by the La Ni\u00f1a phenomenon, when \u201cstrong trade winds are present which causes warm waters at the surface to be displaced westward and replaced by cooler waters from the bottom\u201d causing the east \u201cacific water temperatures to become cooler than the average. The world has been in the La Ni\u00f1a phase for the last three years, according to Abid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Despite being largely understudied in MENA, it impacts our region: <\/strong>El Ni\u00f1o has affected 71% of drought years in the southern and southwestern parts of the Arabian Peninsula, and La Ni\u00f1a was linked to 38% of this area\u2019s flood years, a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/7\/1477.pdf\">study (pdf)<\/a> by Abid and other researchers from King AbdulAziz University\u2019s (KAU) Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research (CECCR) found. \u201cAlthough it is not surprising that ENSO affects precipitation over the Arabian Peninsula, its apparently strong effect is,\u201d co-author and climate and earth modeling expert Georgiy Stenchikov told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.natureasia.com\/en\/nmiddleeast\/article\/10.1038\/nmiddleeast.2018.5#:~:text=They%20found%20that%20El%20Ni%C3%B1o,of%20this%20area%27s%20flood%20years.\">Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MENA and GCC will see shifting weather patterns soon: <\/strong>Intensifying El Ni\u00f1o conditions may bring heavy and more frequent rainfalls over the Gulf countries during the upcoming winter season, Abid told us. Nile Basin countries, including Egypt, will experience more droughts. \u201cDuring El Ni\u00f1o years there is an increase in wind speed, coupled with dry and warm wind coming from the desert area of the Arabian Peninsula, blowing toward Egypt,\u201d Canada-based climate researcher and water resources consultant Shereif Mahmoud tells Enterprise Climate. This wind moves the moist air away and replaces it with dry hot air, which increases the rate of evaporation over the Nile basin countries leading to a climate favorable for increasing drought, he added. The increase in air temperature and surface humidity in turn increases human thermal comfort indices, which poses a high health risk including difficulty breathing, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Existing drought conditions will be exacerbated during El Ni\u00f1o years: <\/strong>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.preventionweb.net\/publication\/climate-variability-drought-and-drought-management-moroccos-agricultural-sector\">study (pdf)<\/a> published in 2016 found that ENSO had some impacts on the 2015\u20132016 droughts in Morocco, which could increase in the coming years as Morocco faces tougher conditions that have led it and its neighboring countries to ration the nation's water consumption. The plastic waste derived oil (PDO) was processed at Aramco-TotalEnergies JV SATORP refinery in Jubail. The PDO was used later as a feedstock by Sabic affiliate Petrokemya for the production of certified circular polymers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why this matters:<\/strong> The process would pave the way for the use of non-sorted plastics \u2014 which are often complex to recycle mechanically \u2014 to solve the dilemma of end-of-life plastics, the statement notes. Beehives thrive in temperatures between <a href=\"https:\/\/entomologytoday.org\/2021\/04\/16\/honey-bee-hive-boxes-drafty-inefficient-temperature\/#:~:text=It%20needs%20to%20be%20between,cool%20or%20shivering%20to%20warm.\">34.5-35.5 \u00b0C<\/a>, and temperatures of c. 50\u00b0C in Basra and Baghdad are no longer suitable for honey farming. High temperatures affect the lifespan of bees, decreasing it by two thirds in some cases, bee farmer Mohamed Aliawi told AFP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Affecting honey production: <\/strong>Bees normally cover hundreds of meters to forage for nectar and pollen necessary for honey production, but extreme heat and ongoing drought are driving bees in central Iraq to travel longer distances \u2014 up to 5 km\u2014 to pollinate, AFP notes. In spite of a growth in honey production last year in Baghdad and in Kurdistan, production volumes are below those bee farmers used to record earlier in the 2000s. In the early 2000s, each beehive would produce between 20-25 kg of honey, Aliawi notes. Drought and extreme heat are currently driving down production to just 5 kg, he says. Climate change is severely impacting global bee populations because it <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3951339\/bees-climate-change\/\">destroys their habitats<\/a> and food sources, and changes their seasonal routines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bee populations are declining at an unprecedented rate globally:<\/strong> Bee species have dropped 25% between 2006-2015 globally compared to population sizes recorded before 1990 partly owing to climate-driven shifts in weather patterns. In our neck of the woods, climate change has been <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/05\/climate-change-is-coming-for-your-beloved-jar-of-honey-75320\/\">weighing on Egypt\u2019s honey industry<\/a>, with industry players attributing the decline of honey production to climate-induced shifts in weather delaying harvest seasons, which is ultimately reducing bee population sizes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why should we care? <\/strong>Some 3%-5% of fruit, vegetable, and nut production is lost due to inadequate pollination, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ehp.niehs.nih.gov\/doi\/full\/10.1289\/EHP10947\">study<\/a> in Environmental Health Perspectives, which has led to an estimated 427k excess deaths a year from lost healthy food consumption and associated diseases. Treatments for diseases and conditions like multiple sclerosis, osteoarthritis, and chronic fatigue syndrome also rely on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/21ca4bb3-ecc6-4b8a-b605-0d075c3ad6a4\">bee venom<\/a>.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n
