Let\u2019s dive right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY-<\/strong> The UAE government has approved its updated National Energy Strategy to increase the country\u2019s 2030 renewable capacity goal to 14 GW from 9.2 GW, tripling the currently installed renewable energy capacity. The Emirates also stamped approvals on the country\u2019s hydrogen and electric vehicles strategies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have the details on this story and much more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong> Japan\u2019s plan to discharge treated radioactive water from the tsunami-hit Fukushima into the ocean has earned the International Atomic Energy Agency\u2019s (IAEA) approval despite fierce opposition by neighboring countries like China and the public over the move\u2019s environmental impact. The UN watchdog determined that the plan for \u201ccontrolled, gradual discharges of the treated water\u201d into the Pacific Ocean \u201cwould have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment.\u201d The approval by the IAEA comes following a two-year review as Japan sought to ensure that the process is safe as it has conducted a treatment of the water, which is enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Most radioactive elements in the water have been filtered except for tritium, with Japan stressing that the treated water would be diluted to well below internationally approved levels of the hydrogen isotope before its release into the ocean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The dump just isn\u2019t sinking in for some: <\/strong>China is one of the main vocal opponents of the plan, arguing that the move would threaten marine environment and public health. Yesterday, China\u2019s Foreign Ministry described the plan as \u201crisky, immoral and illegal.\u201d The proposal is also receiving opposition at home, with Japanese fishing unions saying that it would harm reputations of the country\u2019s fishing industry. The project is part of a broader plan to link Israel\u2019s electricity grid with Egypt, Jordan, and the Gulf\u2019s, Energy Minister Israel Katz said, according to the newswire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Subsea cables, they\u2019re so in right now: <\/strong>The World Bank Group signed off on a USD 268.4 mn loan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/8bbf89db-f63d-4288-a4f3-3ba1c53e1834\">last month<\/a> to help Tunisia finance its planned electrical interconnection project with Italy. The EUR 850 mn, 600 MW subsea interconnector project will link Tunisian and EU power grids, enabling the trade in renewable energy between Tunisia and Europe.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- An exit clause in ESG-linked bonds is ringing alarm <\/strong><strong>bells: <\/strong>Issuers of the USD 6.4 tn ESG debt market are establishing clauses that would allow them to dodge financial penalties, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-07-03\/esg-linked-bonds-with-exit-clause-raise-alarm-in-new-analysis?srnd=green\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported earlier this week, citing BloombergNEF analysis. A quarter of sustainability-linked bonds (SLBs) can be redeemed before any penalty is imposed, allowing issuers an \u201cexit route if it expects to miss its target.\u201d The study also found other flaws such as clauses that allow companies to adjust their ESG targets after the bond has been issued.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Once bitten, twice shy? <\/strong>The study comes as investors steer away from the SLBs market, with the market seeing a downturn after almost a tenfold increase in sales between 2020 and 2021. Between the start of the year and May, sales of SLB were down by c. 28% y-o-y, according to Bloomberg Intelligence data. The strategy also outlines a goal to have 30% of the country\u2019s energy generated from renewables by 2031, and net AED 100 bn (USD 27 bn) in financial savings by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lofty hydrogen goals: <\/strong>The country approved a hydrogen strategy with a goal to transform the nation into a global top 10 hydrogen producer by 2031, the statement notes. The country hopes to produce 14-22 mn tons of hydrogen per year by 2050, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/\/news\/2465557-uae-approves-national-energy-hydrogen-strategies\">Argus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know about the hydrogen strategy: <\/strong>\u201cThe [hydrogen] strategy aims to promote the UAE's position as a producer and exporter of low-emission hydrogen over the next 8 years through the development of supply chains, the establishment of hydrogen oases and a national research and development center,\u201d Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, according to the statement. No further details of the strategy are publicly available at this time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there are a lot of developers waiting in the wings: <\/strong>As of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5345ee93-0434-4642-a343-fe5c4310bdb4\">October 2022<\/a>, USD 10.3 bn worth of agreements for green hydrogen and ammonia plants were signed, while a 2022 summary report found that the UAE has signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c94df3a0-5ef1-4a70-8800-38948f92fa8e\">total of 10<\/a> preliminary low-carbon hydrogen agreements. The UAE plans to hold a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c94df3a0-5ef1-4a70-8800-38948f92fa8e\">25% share<\/a> of the global hydrogen market by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A large volume is earmarked for export:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s Adnoc signed an agreement with Japanese manufacturing giant Kawasaki <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d72de150-9866-4cb6-9cb5-9153519fd94b\">in April<\/a> to explore joint production, liquefaction, and transport mechanisms for low-carbon hydrogen for delivery to international markets. UAE\u2019s Al Fattan Energy signed an agreement with South Korea\u2019s LTechUVC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f9c07f6a-9637-4e56-a39c-3ced55a603c2\">in February<\/a> to build a USD 400 mn, 200 MW green hydrogen and ammonia facility to produce green hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d9799347-cc1a-46be-8e5e-02f2589c5941\">for export<\/a> by 2027. Finally, German oil and gas company Hydrogenious LOHC Technologies is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6c5bf3e6-00a3-40f1-8af4-ec540f4114ae\">working<\/a> on establishing a UAE-Europe hydrogen pipeline with Adnoc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ramping up the country\u2019s EV network is a priority:<\/strong> The cabinet also approved the National Electric Vehicles Policy, which aims to \u201cbuild a national network of electric vehicle chargers, organize the market of electric vehicles, promote associated industries to ensure lower emissions, lower energy consumption, and maintain the quality of roads,\u201d Al Maktoum said. The policy will contribute to reducing energy consumption in the transport sector by 20% through its Green Mobility Project. The carbon contract trading facility would allow clients to access a growing asset class with an estimated value of USD 850 bn along six global emission trading schemes, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>The facility will follow systems set by the European Union\u2019s Emission Trading System (ETS) and the UK\u2019s Emission Trading Scheme. The ETS\u2019 scheme adheres to the \u201ccap and trade\u201d system, where corporations are given a cap on the amount of carbon emissions they can emit. If this cap is exceeded, they are obliged to buy allowances from other businesses that have released less emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All part of a bigger plan: <\/strong>The UAE plans to launch regulating carbon credit trading exchanges and clearing houses ahead of COP28, the statement notes. The UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators launched the UAE Carbon Alliance <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e2f2016c-930f-4150-83e4-11d44182e14f\">in June<\/a> in partnership with Singapore-based carbon trading exchange AirCarbon Exchange (ACX) in a bid to establish a framework for carbon markets. The alliance was launched a year after the Abu Dhabi Global Market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adgm.com\/media\/announcements\/abu-dhabi-to-launch-first-regulated-carbon-credit-trading-exchange-and-clearing-house-in-the-world\">said<\/a> it was working with ACX on launching the world\u2019s first fully regulated carbon trading exchange.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon trading is the new cool in MENA:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Regional Voluntary Carbon Market Company (RVCMC) \u2014 established by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund and the Saudi Tadawul Group \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/95960906-4e15-4ecb-8c7c-2cd4bd1841d6\">plans<\/a> to launch a carbon trading exchange early next year. The announcement came as the RVCMC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a86c6cf4-8b17-4320-a2af-33c23bf7d8ab\">sold<\/a> 2 mn tons of carbon credits last month in what the company described as the largest-ever voluntary carbon credit auction. The facility, which is expected to be operational next year, is reportedly the world\u2019s \u201clargest and most efficient\u201d WtE plant, Al Maktoum said on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/hamdanbinmohammed_i-inaugurated-the-worlds-largest-and-most-activity-7081932790119772161-UP6_?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop\">Linkedin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not the only WtE facility in Warsan: <\/strong>Earlier in May, Dubai <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5f0216f8-f9f0-4aae-98d3-c4590e280a34\">finished<\/a> constructing a 6 MW WtE biogas production facility at the Warsan Wastewater Treatment Plant. The biogas will be retrieved from the waste emitted by the water treatment process before being converted to energy and used to treat more water. The facility can generate some 44k MWh of electricity annually \u2014 enough to cover 50% of the treatment plant\u2019s entire operational needs \u2014 and will lower operational costs by AED 320 mn over 25 years while reducing carbon emissions by 31k tons. The number and locations of the charging stations have not been disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We knew this was coming:<\/strong> EGX-listed MB Engineering's EV charging subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sha7en.co\/\">Sha7en<\/a> signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4a9911fa-f611-4c6c-baf3-e13627e029ef\">initial partnership agreement<\/a> with Elsewedy Electric earlier this year to install, operate, and maintain EV charging stations over the coming three years. The agreement came shortly after Sha7en <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/aa60a3e8-235d-4b6d-b835-be5d22709a6f\">received its license<\/a> to start operating EV charging stations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infinity dominates Egypt\u2019s EV charging market:<\/strong> Our friends at Infinity have built <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/934069da-ded0-46a7-a775-cb695d98fad6\">at least 190<\/a> charging stations so far nationwide with plans to up that number to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/4376c407-e64d-4210-82ce-321f31931c68\">300 by 2024<\/a>, as part of a wider plan with the Egyptian government to eventually set up <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e2dd65fe-9507-4ee7-90cc-f2e4a53a5da5\">6k vehicle charging points<\/a> at 3k stations across the country. Last February, Misr Helwan Automotive <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/91e40dce-2fd8-44ee-9a94-d83853d42252\">began construction<\/a> of EV charging stations in Greater Cairo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The country\u2019s EV ambitions are high: <\/strong>While Egypt\u2019s industry is still nascent, two auto firms and distributors \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/91e40dce-2fd8-44ee-9a94-d83853d42252\">Misr Helwan Automotive<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/e7c824ed-2d5a-4251-ab4e-152755d7c179\">Abou Ghaly Motors<\/a> \u2014 have introduced EVs to the country\u2019s car market this year. In February, Misr Helwan Automotive introduced Chinese auto firm Dongfeng\u2019s E70 500 Pro electric vehicles, while Abou Ghaly Motors brought Chinese automaker Geely\u2019s Geometry C electric car to the local market.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And plans to assemble cars in Egypt are on the table: <\/strong>Egypt is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ec24ca3c-1d4a-44bb-bc35-f89f02588d07\">supporting<\/a> Abou Ghaly and other private sector players with incentives to get a homegrown EV industry off the ground, with the country\u2019s environment minister expecting the first locally-assembled EVs to roll off production lines in 2024. Stellantis, Nissan and Al Mansour Automotive expressed interest in investing a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/5d8901c0-74be-4bac-b18f-c911b3869c11\">USD 145 mn<\/a> in the nation\u2019s auto industry over the next three years to produce a total of 60k-70k EVs and combustion engine vehicles every year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exports are also in the cards:<\/strong> Abou Ghaly is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ec24ca3c-1d4a-44bb-bc35-f89f02588d07\">in talks<\/a> with Geely to use Egypt as an export hub for the Chinese automaker\u2019s EVs to Africa. The plant will reportedly be built through funds from non-bank sources, with the ECAs helping fund the procurement of imported capital goods required for the plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:<\/strong> The USD 3 bn green steel plant is expected to have a production capacity of 5 mn tons per annum once completed in 2026, company officials <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/de020ce5-e050-4e69-abd2-3a40e1df1ad8\">said last year<\/a>. The plant\u2019s output will be primarily directed towards export to the Middle East, Europe, and Japan, with some 30-40% earmarked for consumption in Oman and the wider GCC region, they added. It is set to be a part of Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel (JSPL), which was acquired by Vulcan Steel in 2020 for USD 1 bn in enterprise value. JSPL has decided to divest from its Oman arm and assets it had acquired for USD 464 mn in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vulcan is spending big as it crosses fingers on demand:<\/strong> Vulcan Steel plans to pour in over USD 3 bn in the project, a senior official at the company said in an earlier interview with The Economic Times. The plant is being modeled on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/06f84b25-91df-4fd8-aa39-3ba2b8442b5c\">Europe\u2019s steel markets<\/a>, which are currently transitioning to low-emissions raw materials under a decarbonization push.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Green steel is gaining traction in the region:<\/strong> Brazilian mining firm Vale finalized a land reservation agreement with the Port of Duqm Company for three production plants <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f9f9eb78-c5da-4ce5-adcb-d82d6f8471ec\">in May<\/a> that will source materials essential for Oman\u2019s low-carbon steel making industry. The UAE\u2019s Emirates Steel Arkan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a1a4b0f8-0acb-4106-9395-81be478d0947\">plans to partner<\/a> with two Japanese firms to look at setting up an iron ore processing facility in Abu Dhabi that could be partly powered by green hydrogen, due to begin production in 2H 2025. It plans to unroll its first EV range in 2025 and deliver its first plug-in hybrid Valhalla in 2024, and all its new model lines will feature an electrified powertrain option in 2026. The powder produced \u2014 dubbed \u201cblack gold\u201d \u2014 is made up of nickel, manganese, cobalt, lithium and graphite, in a \u201cmine above ground.\u201d The pair\u2019s Norwegian Hydrovolt plant is expected to process 25k electric car batteries within the next months, making it the largest battery recycling plant in Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The lithium-ion battery packs are taken apart to recover up to 95% of the materials<\/strong>, the news outlet writes. The aluminum is recycled by Norsk Hydro, while the \u201cblack mass\u201d powder is sold to battery makers in China and South Korea where the metals are first extracted from the powder before being used to make new batteries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Northvolt is eyeing markets where EVs are booming: <\/strong>The company is looking to expand in Germany, France and the US where the rate of EV demand is growing, especially after the EU parliament recently adopted regulations making batteries more recyclable. Recycling old batteries could cover between 8-12% of Europe's critical mineral needs by 2030, and between 12-14% by 2035, AFP reports, citing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportenvironment.org\/\">Transport & Environment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It may take a while for the EV battery recycling market to take off:<\/strong> While some carmakers have already set up their own recycling operations, the market for old EV batteries is currently non-existent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/second-life-ev-batteries-depends-how-long-first-is-2023-06-26\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. However, a \u201ctsunami\u201d of used batteries will hit the market in 5 years, especially as the lifetime of batteries used for grid storage comes to an end. While the capacity of EV batteries fall below 80-85% after 8-to-10 years of use, car users can keep their cars for over 12 years without replacing the battery, squeezing demand for recycling even
