Company will acquire water solutions firm Sustainable Water Solutions Holding Company for AED 1.7 bn (USD 463 mn) and Abu Dhabi-backed investment firm CYVN Holdings is investing USD 738.5 mn in Chinese electric vehicle automaker Nio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- There\u2019s no single climate story<\/strong><strong> dominating international headlines this morning<\/strong>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/nouveaupactefinancier.org\/en.php\">the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact<\/a>, which is kicking off today in Paris and concluding tomorrow, is getting attention. The two-day summit will bring together heads of states and heads of multilateral development banks, international organizations, the private sector, and international NGOs to shape a new finance \u201ctoolbox\u201d and \u201cpave the way towards a more balanced financial partnership between the north and south.\u201d It will also see new agreements in a bid to relieve debt distress and allow countries to access additional financing to invest in sustainable development and slash emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we can expect to see from the talks:<\/strong> US President Joe Biden and 11 other heads of state urged in a statement published in France\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/international\/article\/2023\/06\/21\/biden-macron-lula-we-must-prioritize-a-just-and-inclusive-transition_6034584_4.html\">Le Monde<\/a> yesterday the necessity of a \u201cjust and inclusive\u201d transition aimed at backing the most vulnerable nations to tackle development obligations and fight against climate change and poverty. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is also taking part in the summit, where she is expected to \u201crally world leaders to take concrete actions to partner with developing and emerging economies \u2026 to address challenges that threaten all of us, like climate change, pandemics, and fragility\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/yellen-push-concrete-actions-paris-debt-summit-2023-06-21\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported, citing a senior Treasury Department official.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- It\u2019s time to stop playing with the AC remote: <\/strong>The UAE\u2019s Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) began its annual \u201cSet and Save 24\u00b0C\u201d summer campaign to curb energy consumption, it said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfm.ae\/the-exchange\/news-disclosures\/disclosures\/64435847-70c8-4ba6-91cf-bb6e358e06b9\">disclosure (pdf)<\/a>. During a meeting with Kenya\u2019s President William Ruto on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Forum in Nairobi, Al Jaber agreed on having COP28 and Kenya work together to advocate for tripling the installed renewable energy capacity by 2030. They will also work on policy and scaling finance. A joint working group was also launched through the Africa Climate Summit and COP28 to shed light on a fair energy transition and tapping climate finance to boost green growth in the continent. Clean energy investments account for only 2% of global investments and less than 10% of the USD 120 bn \u201cbaseline requirement\u201d needed annually, Al Jaber said.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- The Indians want to invest big in Egypt:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone) head Walid Gamal El Din held extensive talks with leading Indian corporations operating in renewable energy and electric motorcycles about making investments in the country, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3pcwuNf\">statement<\/a>. Gamal El Din met with representatives from Ocior Energy, which signed a framework agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4b9ad0d5-1d50-40df-8fd1-9831cd23db5b\">in December<\/a> to develop green hydrogen and green ammonia facilities in the SCZone. Ocior Energy CEO Ranjit Gupta expressed his company\u2019s desire to establish the project in line with the world\u2019s shift to a green economy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More coming? <\/strong>Indian two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp expressed interest in expanding its activities in the SCZone through investments and setting up projects to manufacture electric motorcycles to meet local demand, the statement added. It plans to export some of its output from the zone to African and European markets. Valley of KAEC, the news agency notes. A timeline on when the factory will become operational was not provided.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Ceer:<\/strong> The company \u2014 first <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f1b8a41d-7d82-4769-b677-ea007e244255\">established<\/a> in November last year \u2014 is expected to contribute USD 8 bn to Saudi Arabia\u2019s GDP by 2034. Once it kicks off operations, the company is expected to rake in over USD 150 mn in foreign direct investment. Ceer\u2019s EVs are expected to hit the market in 2025. The flight test campaign of the electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) ran for a week after 18 months of collaboration between Neom, Saudi Arabia\u2019s General Authority of Civil Aviation, and Volocopter to implement an electric urban air mobility (UAM) ecosystem and testbed at Neom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What were they testing?<\/strong> The one-week campaign focused on the flight performance of the eVTOL in the local environment and its integration into the local unmanned aircraft system traffic management (UTM) system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>The testing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/84645aa6-e0a5-473e-acd9-bdfadc68f166\">comes months<\/a> after Neom said it was investing USD 175 mn in Volocopter last year as part of a plan to roll out an advanced air mobility industry in the country. The investment gave Neom a \u201csignificant stake\u201d in the German company, according to statements at the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are eVTOLs again?<\/strong> These drone-like aircraft use electric propulsion and large omnidirectional fans to allow them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mane.co.uk\/news\/what-are-evtols-288010\/\">takeoff vertically<\/a>, making them energy efficient, quiet, environmentally friendly, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/flying-cab-drivers-wanted\">eventually pilotless<\/a>. Some 71% of respondents of DNVs survey \u2014 made up of 1.1k respondents from across the hydrogen economy in 80 countries \u2014 believe that current hydrogen ambitions underestimate some of the practical limitations and barriers to adoption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What makes transporting and storing hydrogen so difficult? <\/strong>Hydrogen's <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuev-nord.de\/en\/company\/energy\/hydrogen\/hydrogen-properties-safety-hazards\/\">flammable<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tuev-nord.de\/en\/company\/energy\/hydrogen\/hydrogen-properties-safety-hazards\/\">properties<\/a> and its ability to embrittle materials can easily cause leakages in pipelines and tanks if precautions are not taken, presenting a storage and transport hurdle. Hydrogen also has the lowest energy density of all gasses and is easily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twi-global.com\/technical-knowledge\/faqs\/what-is-hydrogen-storage#:~:text=Why%20is%20it%20Difficult%20to%20Store%20Hydrogen%3F,easily%20lost%20into%20the%20atmosphere.\">lost into the atmosphere<\/a>; a storage problem rendering it an inefficient energy carrier, according to research by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-delivery#:~:text=Because%20hydrogen%20has%20a%20relatively,it%20as%20an%20energy%20carrier.\">US Department of Energy<\/a> (DoE). Currently available storage methods require large-volume systems that see hydrogen stored in its gaseous form, according to a separate report by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/fuelcells\/hydrogen-storage#:~:text=High%20density%20hydrogen%20storage%20is,store%20hydrogen%20in%20gaseous%20form.\">DoE<\/a>. Green hydrogen needs to be kept in subzero, pressurized conditions, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/03\/14\/green-fuels-explained-99884-3\/\">making it difficult<\/a>, expensive, and potentially risky to transport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some are forging ahead:<\/strong> Moroccan hydrogen developer Gaia Future Energy and Spanish hydrogen provider HyDeal are <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/06\/15\/moroccos-gaia-future-energy-and-spains-hydeal-partner-to-form-green-hydrogen-transport-jv-101617\/\">partnering up<\/a>to transport green hydrogen from Gaia Future Energy projects in Morocco and Mauritania to Europe. The hydrogen sourced from North Africa will be transported through a subsea coastal hydrogen pipeline connecting Mauritania and Morocco to Spain, and will leverage the potential avenue provided by the H2Med pipeline project to connect with more by 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green ammonia to the rescue: <\/strong>Ammonia can act as a carrier for hydrogen, making its transport more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyssenkrupp.com\/en\/stories\/sustainability-and-climate-protection\/why-ammonia-is-the-more-efficient-hydrogen-carrier\">energy and size-efficient<\/a>, and gives the region an advantage in the transition to low-carbon hydrogen given its established infrastructure for ammonia, especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/wits.worldbank.org\/trade\/comtrade\/en\/country\/All\/year\/2021\/tradeflow\/Exports\/partner\/WLD\/product\/281410\">Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE<\/a>. Dozens of regional agreements for green ammonia export to Europe, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b7089f22-eb65-4418-81c1-c5fb17e42672\">USD 5.5 bn green ammonia plant in Ain Sokhna<\/a> which relied on two existing ammonia facilities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone owned by Fertiglobe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic manufacturing using green hydrogen increases export value:<\/strong> Not only does green ammonia offer a solution for a more efficient export of green hydrogen, but it can also help unlock USD 45 bn in foreign direct investment, according to a PwC <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/6\/reconfiguring-global-value-chains-pwc.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a>. The report makes the case for how the Middle East can reconfigure its value chain to capitalize on its abundant and cost-competitive supply of green energy and how local manufacturing of steel using green hydrogen as a fuel can unlock another USD 155 bn in investments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investor confidence reportedly isn\u2019t strong\u2026 : <\/strong>The MENA region scored 2.6 out of 5 in a survey of investors\u2019 opinions on hydrogen production infrastructure carried out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/843.pdf\">Global Infrastructure Investor Association<\/a> (GIIA), which gathered data through in-depth interviews with industry experts. Out of the 10 regions assessed, the Middle East comes in 6th place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026 Despite big potential: <\/strong>On a country level, Oman \u2014 which has a target to invest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e806e16c-672f-4775-8776-6f597297731a\">USD 140 bn<\/a> in green hydrogen by 2050 in a bid to produce 7.5-8.5 mn metric tons annually \u2014 is on track to become the sixth-largest exporter of hydrogen globally, according to a recent International Energy Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/6\/1384.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are LNG pipes the future of transportation? <\/strong>Existing natural gas pipelines may become an essential asset in the green transition as researchers find ways to repurpose natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transportation, with Siemens Energy currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.siemens-energy.com\/global\/en\/news\/magazine\/2020\/repurposing-natural-gas-infrastructure-for-hydrogen.html\">running pilot tests<\/a> to make the conversion. The region\u2019s extensive natural gas pipeline, including the Arab Gas Pipeline, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swp-berlin.org\/10.18449\/2022C50v02\/\">EastMed<\/a> pipeline, may give it an advantage in the future if the studies were to progress further.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco and Algeria faced technical barriers: <\/strong>Despite Morocco and Algeria announcing plans last year to export hydrogen to Europe using existing natural gas pipelines, former UAE Climate Change and Environment Minister Abdullah Belhaif Al-Nuaimi advised against the proposed plan given the great safety concerns that come with compressing hydrogen, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/attaqa.net\/2023\/04\/02\/%d9%86%d9%82%d9%84-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%87%d9%8a%d8%af%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%ac%d9%8a%d9%86-%d9%81%d9%8a-%d8%ae%d8%b7%d9%88%d8%b7-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ba%d8%a7%d8%b2-%d8%b4%d8%b1%d9%83%d8%a9-%d8%a3%d9%85%d9%8a%d8%b1\/\">Attaqa<\/a>. They also signed an MoU and a partnership agreement, local media reported, without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Morocco has been pushing to position itself as a hub for renewable energy due to its major solar and wind capabilities. Morocco aims to have 50-52% of its energy come from renewables by 2030, up from the current 38%, Akhannouch said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a966a586-541d-42ac-9d15-1d4a53fa3f75\">earlier this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Dutch have been scouting renewables in the region lately: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia and the Netherlands inked an agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/32eeb75a-1bc1-4e5d-ae84-61a44c152126\">in May<\/a> to boost cooperation in renewable energy and green hydrogen production. For example, Arabica coffee has an annual temperature requirement of around 19\u00b0C, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/unionroasted.com\/pages\/about\">Union<\/a> coffee roasters. \u2060While other coffee species such as Robusta are more resilient to hot temperatures, but much lower in quality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enter Stenophylla: <\/strong>The coffee strain can be grown in temperatures 7\u00b0C warmer than the similar tasting Arabica bean, so the revived strain may hold the \u201cgenetic keys\u201d to making coffee more resilient to climate change while still maintaining premium quality, the coffee trader said <a href=\"https:\/\/sucafina.com\/na\/news\/what-can-we-learn-from-stenophylla\">in February<\/a> when the pilot tests were still in progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We probably won\u2019t get to taste it for a while: <\/strong>The researchers that rediscovered the forgotten coffee strain have been working with Sucafina to propagate more than 3k stenophylla seedlings in nurseries, but it may take anywhere from 2 to 7 years for the trees to start bearing fruit.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div
