<\/strong>The climate news cycle remains calm as we near the weekend, but we have a couple of big stories making headlines this morning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Orascom Investment Holding is exploring investments in Uzbekistan\u2019s renewables and the hospitality sector, as part of a USD 1.2 bn investment plan discussed by OIH Chairman Naguib Sawiris during a meeting with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to \u201cimplement large investment projects\u201d in the Central Asian country. Closer to home, the First Abu Dhabi Bank is set to raise c.USD 600 mn from a fresh five-year green bond issuance at 95 basis points (bps) above US Treasuries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The UN\u2019s Net Zero Ins. Alliance loses <\/strong><strong>a fifth of its <\/strong><strong>members in a week: <\/strong>UK ins. firm Lloyd\u2019s of London joined ins. giants QBE Ins., Allianz, AXA, SCOR, and SOMPO Holdings in their withdrawal from world\u2019s largest climate association for ins. companies, the UN\u2019s Net Zero Ins. Alliance \u2014 a subunit of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero. The group warned that political attacks from US lawmakers on antitrust concerns would drive more exits from the climate alliance. The UN-backed ins. coalition held an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2c1c8157-2f6f-4807-bd86-1a3e3f181d89\">emergency meeting<\/a> last week after Zurich-based reins. firm Zurich RE, Hannover Re, Zurich Ins. Group, and Munich RE withdrew from the group. While Zurich RE <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/swiss-re-decides-leave-net-zero-insurance-alliance-2023-05-22\/\">said<\/a> the reason for its departure was to focus on helping its clients transition to a low carbon economy, Munich Re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.munichre.com\/en\/company\/media-relations\/media-information-and-corporate-news\/media-information\/2023\/media-release-2023-03-31.html\">explicitly noted<\/a> antitrust concerns led to its withdrawal from the climate alliance. The exits are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a2657cbe-36cc-4b18-8bb3-cd06b3652cd6\">drawing skepticism<\/a> among industry leaders on the utility of voluntary industry associations aiming to slash carbon output.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story made the rounds in the international press yesterday:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/political-attacks-are-damaging-insurers-climate-efforts-gfanz-2023-05-26\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-30\/japan-s-largest-insurer-joins-defectors-from-gfanz-climate-group?srnd=economics-v2\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1dd66ce1-a720-4c56-96d9-8d47f07f376f\">Financial Times<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE<\/strong><strong> #1- Oman wants in on Egypt\u2019s green hydrogen bonanza:<\/strong> The Oman Investment Authority (OIA) has reportedly begun talks with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt (SFE) and Egypt\u2019s Electricity Ministry to explore developing a large-scale green hydrogen project in the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3MJcFF7\">Attaqa<\/a> reported on Monday, citing people it says have knowledge of the matter. The sources estimated the project\u2019s cost at USD 3-5 bn, and discussions are still underway over the potential project\u2019s site, which could be in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone). The Omani sovereign wealth fund and the Egyptian government could disclose more details about the project when it is officially announced before the end of 3Q 2023, the sources added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> The Egyptian government signed several framework agreements during COP27 with foreign companies to construct several green hydrogen and ammonia facilities in the SCZone. The facilities would <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1f8d7402-6d05-4eae-b3b0-b5bb811be7ab\">cost a combined USD 83 bn<\/a> and collectively produce up to 7.6 mn tons of green ammonia and 2.7 mn tons of hydrogen a year. Egypt also approved incentives <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e9bb488d-340c-4d8e-a6cf-a17792457994\">earlier this month<\/a> to boost the country\u2019s green hydrogen sector and lure in much-needed foreign exchange inflows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OIA\u2019s not just interested in hydrogen:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Acwa Power signed an MoU with OIA on the sidelines of COP27 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acwapower.com\/news\/acwa-power-set-to-explore-bringing-on-oman-investment-authority-as-co-investor-for-11gw-suez-wind-energy-project\/\">last year<\/a> to discuss bringing in OIA as an investor for Egypt\u2019s 1.1 GW Suez Wind Energy project. Under the terms of the agreement, OIA will assess the possibility of owning up to 10% of the USD 1.5 bn project. The project is slated to be the largest single contracted wind farm in the Middle East upon completion in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Oman\u2019s state-owned Hydrom will sign agreements for the Phase A in Round 1 of <\/strong><strong>its planned green hydrogen projects on 1 June<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/ar\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D8%AD%D9%81%D9%8A%D8%A9\/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%88%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%A9\/1-2023-cfrlr1ge\">Zawya<\/a> reports. Hydrom will ink several MoUs for the first phase of its planned green hydrogen plants and sign an agreement for the usufruct of concession plots in Duqm where the projects will be located with Oman\u2019s Energy and Minerals Ministry and Housing and Urban Planning Ministry. Back in March, Hydrom <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/40455595-d905-4d49-a583-ee97e18a20cb\">signed<\/a> six binding term sheet agreements worth a combined USD 20 bn with several regional and international developers for the production of green hydrogen. The potential investments are part of a USD 1.2 bn investment plan discussed by OIH Chairman Naguib Sawiris during a meeting on Monday with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to \u201cimplement large investment projects\u201d in the Central Asian country, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/president.uz\/ru\/lists\/view\/6386?fbclid=IwAR3HNYO2LA34C3WIEoR1WjvU0uA3RP1cECnArVxFKylI4EcCTnMQiPV6K0M\">statement<\/a> released by the Uzbekistani presidency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>OIH will only be concerned with the potential investments in wind and solar power plants and the hospitality sector, Hussein said. The remaining investments \u2014 which the Uzbekistani presidency said will be in food products, geological exploration, and developing metal deposits \u2014 will be funded by the Sawiris family, Hussein explained. Talks are still in an early stage, and OIH is \u201cexamining the potential projects and announcing it in due course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We knew something of the sort was in the works:<\/strong> Uzbekistan\u2019s Mirziyoyev visited Egypt in February to meet with members of the country\u2019s business community, including Orascom Construction, which expressed interest in building a 100 MW wind farm and an industrial park that would house paint, varnish, and chemical facilities, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uz\/en\/news\/view\/36511\">statement<\/a> released by Uzbekistan\u2019s government at the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All part of Uzbekistan\u2019s renewables push: <\/strong>Uzbekistan aims to source 35% of its electricity from renewables by 2035. It plans to establish wind energy plants totaling 10 GW and solar energy farms that would generate 5 GW of clean power <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/46255998-c3f3-4814-a5a4-2cdf891cf0cc\">by 2030<\/a> to offset a total of 16 mn tons of CO2 per annum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting lots of love from the region:<\/strong> Uzbekistan\u2019s growing renewables sector has been getting attention from several regional players, with Masdar signing a joint development agreement with Uzbekistan <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/93d5c85d-6dab-4bfe-a0a3-6f5dab452e43\">earlier this month<\/a> to develop renewables projects worth some 2 GW and 500 MW of battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities across multiple locations. It also achieved financial close on three solar plants <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/abef0c63-ad3e-4492-8671-d3bb35764e52\">last month<\/a> to be set up in Uzbekistan\u2019s Sherabad, Samarkand, and Jizzakh that would yield c. 900 MW. Masdar also actively contributed to Uzbekistan\u2019s first 100 MW IPP solar project <a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/en\/Masdar-Clean-Energy\/Projects\/100MW-Nur-Navoi-Solar-Project\">Nur Navoi<\/a>, which has been operational since 2021. Back in September, Masdar <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/13a804af-a659-4152-82b2-a3c920862f2b\">achieved financial close<\/a> on the USD 600 mn 500 MW Zarafshan wind project in Uzbekistan \u2014 Central Asia\u2019s largest wind farm. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/news.masdar.ae\/en\/News\/2023\/04\/06\/06\/21\/Financial-Close-on-Three-Solar-Projects-in-Uzbekistan\">was also awarded<\/a>the 250 MW Bukhara Solar PV project, which includes a 62 MW battery energy storage system in late 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And especially from the Saudis: <\/strong>Saudi Arabian renewables giant Acwa Power signed financing agreements worth USD 120 mn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b64b2810-9dca-45ef-9830-a12b5ff3d66e\">earlier this month<\/a> for the 100 MW Karatau wind farm \u2014 formerly known as Nukus Wind IPP. It also signed three power purchase agreements totaling USD 2.5 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/46255998-c3f3-4814-a5a4-2cdf891cf0cc\">in March<\/a> with the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan and the country\u2019s Investment, Industry, and Trade Ministry for 1.4 GW worth of solar projects and three battery energy storage (BESS) units totalling a capacity of 1.5 GWh. It plans to invest c.
