BIG CLIMATE STORY-<\/strong> Infinity Power \u2014 a JV between UAE\u2019s Masdar and homegrown renewable player Infinity \u2014 signed a MoU with Greece-based Copelouzos Group \u2014 through its subsidiary companies Damco Energy and Elica Mediterranean Interconnection \u2014 to explore the feasibility of jointly developing renewable energy projects to supply energy to the 3 GW Greece-Egypt Interconnector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Breach of the 1.5\u00b0C warming target<\/strong><strong> \u201cmore likely than not\u201d by 2027, WMO says:<\/strong> There is a two-out-of-three chance the world will temporarily surpass the Paris-agreed 1.5\u00b0C warming threshold in the next five years, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/media\/press-release\/global-temperatures-set-reach-new-records-next-five-years\">report<\/a> by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) out yesterday, which warns of a 98% chance the planet will record its hottest year yet between 2023 and 2027. The naturally occurring El Nino weather pattern \u2014 which is expected to develop in coming months and warm waters in the Pacific \u2014 coupled with human-induced climate change from fossil fuel consumption will result in the uptick in warming levels. Breach of the warming target, which is expected to occur in at least a year of the next five, marks the first time in history that it\u2019s more likely than not the warming target will be missed, and would send the world into \u201cunchartered territory,\u201d WMO said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story got widespread coverage in the press yesterday:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-warming-likely-to-pass-1-5-degree-threshold-in-next-five-years-u-n-report-says-a829b40b?mod=hp_lead_pos9\">Washington Post<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3db17cdb-6364-4b9a-9e09-59ef86bd91e6\">Financial Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-change-global-threshold-el-nino-22b6f305ee6117f16c6a0ed22e9effb3\">Associated Press<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/environment\/20230517-next-five-years-set-to-be-hottest-ever-1-5c-target-likely-to-be-exceeded-un-warns\">France 24<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-17\/wmo-paris-agreement-s-1-5c-climate-target-could-be-temporarily-breached\">Bloomberg<\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/more-likely-than-not-world-will-soon-see-15c-warming-wmo-2023-05-17\/#:~:text=With%20a%2066%25%20chance%20of,Annual%20to%20Decadal%20Climate%20Update.\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>OVER IN COPLAND- UAE\u2019s approach to COP28 is \u201cdangerous,\u201d UN ex-climate <\/strong><strong>chief warns: <\/strong>The UN\u2019s former climate chief Christiana Figueres warned that COP28 President Designate Sultan Al Jaber\u2019s language on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/746db5ed-81a3-40b8-83a8-0f31ee4517b2\">phasing out emissions<\/a> through carbon capture and storage rather than cutting fossil fuels is \u201cvery dangerous\u201d and a \u201cdirect threat to the survival of vulnerable nations,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/may\/16\/cop28-host-uae-climate-united-arab-emirates\">the Guardian<\/a> reports. Figueres \u2014 a key negotiator in the landmark 2015 Paris agreement \u2014 said that the UAE cannot put forward its own position and has to be \u201cneutral,\u201d adding that Al Jaber is \u201ctrying to dance on two dance floors at the same time\u201d by pushing for the continued use of fossil fuel energy for the \u201cforeseeable future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> Many climate stakeholders are <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/15ce2423-6613-4df0-bf73-bd560e7979d8\">skeptical<\/a> about Al Jaber\u2019s presidency of the climate conference given his position as chief executive of Adnoc. The continued expansion of Adnoc\u2019s production capacity raises doubts about whether Al Jaber will push for goals that are crucial for avoiding large-scale climate disasters. Some climate groups have also flagged Adnoc\u2019s track record of exaggerating its renewables operations and its failure to report its aggregate emission. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03821-8\">Research<\/a> has shown that most fossil fuel reserves must stay in the ground in order to avoid climate disasters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- <\/strong>The UAE\u2019s sustainability-focused social enterprise <a href=\"https:\/\/goumbook.com\/\">Goumbook<\/a> has launched a new podcast series titled Climate Leaders: Rising Up to COP28 on its podcast network Forward Talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303158719\">Wam<\/a> reports. The series will feature interviews with experts and stakeholders who have made exceptional contributions to the sustainability and climate action movement in the UAE and around the world. No timeline or financial details about the production plant were disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- BP looking to triple biofuel production by 2030: <\/strong>British oil giant BP is considering obtaining stakes in biofuel feedstock production companies as part of its target to triple its annual biofuel production capacity to some 4.5 mn tons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/bp-targets-farms-feedstock-biofuel-race-gathers-pace-2023-05-17\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing an unnamed BP senior executive. BP plans to establish five processing plants to convert hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) waste feedstock, the news outlet quotes BP head of biofuels Nigel Dunn as saying. Demand for biofuels is expected to grow to 30 mn tons by the end of the decade from 10 mn tons this year, Reuters notes, citing Barclays\u2019 market forecasts for the sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Biden vetoes legislation to repeal tariff waivers on solar <\/strong><strong>imports: <\/strong>US President Joe Biden vetoed a bill passed by Congress to repeal tariffs on solar panel imports from Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, arguing the waivers are needed to plug a supply gap while the country ramps up its own solar PV production capacity, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/05\/16\/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-his-veto-of-h-j-res-39\/\">White House statement<\/a>. Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6e54b850-47ba-436b-8ef8-4b9ef15261a5\">had threatened<\/a> last month to veto congressional attempts to overturn the tariff waivers, however the statement added that \u201cgiven the strong trends in the domestic solar industry, the President does not intend to extend the tariff suspension at the conclusion of the 24-month period in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The logic: <\/strong>Domestic manufacturers argue that the tariffs \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-24\/biden-threatens-to-veto-bill-to-lift-moratorium-on-solar-tariffs?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> had estimated could go as high as 254% \u2014 are necessary to compete with cheap panels manufactured outside of the US. potential line-up for GREGY:<\/strong> Infinity Power \u2014 a JV between UAE\u2019s Masdar and Egyptian renewable player Infinity \u2014 signed an MoU with Greece-based Copelouzos Group to explore the feasibility of jointly developing renewable energy projects to supply energy to the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cb41cd3c-8caa-4f64-8682-be3dbf55dd71\">3 GW Greece-Egypt Interconnector<\/a> (GREGY), according to a joint <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/5\/1881.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a>. Copelouzos Group will work on the projects through its subsidiary companies Damco Energy and Elica Mediterranean Interconnection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We first heard of this big renewables plan last year:<\/strong> Egypt and Greece said they were working on a plan to add 9.5 GW of renewable power generation capacity in Egypt for export to Greece <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/174d0949-75cd-49ae-bb8d-6abd66ec4206\">last September<\/a>. Both sides said at the time the electricity would be generated by wind and solar plants and would be shipped across the Mediterranean via subsea cables. They did not provide details on who is taking part in the wind and solar plants, the cost of the project, and where the funds for the project will come from.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said:<\/strong> \u201cBy supplying renewable energy to Europe, we are not only bolstering our own economy but also positioning ourselves as a key player in the global energy market,\u201d Infinity Power Chairman Mohamed Ismail Mansour said. Copelouzos Group Chairman and CEO Christos Copelouzos said the project \u2014 slated to be one of the largest green energy projects in the East Mediterranean \u2014 will help \u201csupport Europe in its efforts towards achieving energy diversification and security and bringing earlier the attainment of Fit-55 and elimination of CO2 emissions targets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>About GREGY:<\/strong> The planned electricity link will run directly across the Mediterranean to mainland Greece through a submarine cable, with the possibility of bidirectional energy transmission. It will have a maximum capacity of 3 GW and transmit only renewable energy generated in Egypt to Europe through Greece. Some 9.5 GW of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/174d0949-75cd-49ae-bb8d-6abd66ec4206&title=Egypt%20%2B%20Greece%20plot%209.5%20GW%20renewables%20project.%20Plus:%20Private%20sector%20solar%20tender%20coming%3F\">renewable energy projects<\/a> will be necessary to maximize the utilization of the planned interconnection project. Elica is reportedly applying to the EU for funding, with the European Investment Bank and a number of Greek banks possibly contributing money to the EUR 3.5 bn project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Work on GREGY has accelerated in recent months as the EU steps up its search for new energy supplies following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. No details on the size and value of the acquired stake or immediate changes to the Chinese company\u2019s leadership were disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Jianuo:<\/strong> Jianuo provides critical energy components used in EV power management, battery charging infrastructure, solar and wind power generation, and 5G base station infrastructure, the statement notes. The company is a manufacturing partner to several alternative energy solution providers globally, including providers in the US, Europe and Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said:<\/strong> \u201cThis acquisition reflects our strategy of investing in innovative and growing mid-sized companies and offering investors high-quality alternative investment opportunities in future-focused industries that are key to the global energy transition efforts,\u201d Investcorp Co-CEO Hazem Ben-Gacem said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER<\/strong>- China continues to dominate the clean energy supply chains with the necessary manufacturing capacity to meet global demand. The facilities will be exempt from real estate tax, stamp tax, and a number of administrative fees. Companies will also be permitted to import and export without having their names in either of the registers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To be eligible:<\/strong> Companies will need to have their projects up and running within five years and obtain at least 70% of their financing from foreign lenders.
