The EU country will gather 14 other EU state representatives in Paris today as it looks to count nuclear energy toward the EU\u2019s clean energy sources. A document prepared by the French government seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/france-host-pro-nuclear-meet-push-eu-recognition-climate-benefits-2023-05-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> \u2014 which may yet undergo changes after today\u2019s meeting \u2014 aims to hike the bloc\u2019s nuclear energy generation capacity from 100 GW to 150 GW by 2050 via the installation of 30-45 micro and large nuclear reactors. The story was also picked up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-15\/france-leads-eu-push-to-cement-nuclear-s-role-in-green-shift?srnd=green\">Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- EU countries remain divided on the role of nuclear energy.<\/strong> Debate over whether nuclear-derived hydrogen should be allowed to count towards the EU\u2019s renewable energy generation targets has delayed the finalizing of a text outlining the EU\u2019s diplomatic priorities ahead of COP28 \u2014 which was supposed to be agreed on by member countries in February and has been delayed with no set finalization date. France has been for months attempting to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/eaf1b7f0-1a54-4bbc-accb-96c9bdfcfcec\">rally support<\/a> for the inclusion of nuclear power as a low carbon energy source in EU policies, seeking a nuclear alliance to counter German, Spanish, and other EU opposition to nuclear\u2019s inclusion.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/strong> <strong>Europe\u2019s renewable energy expansion could <\/strong><strong>make newly planned LNG infrastructure obsolete past 2030<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-15\/europe-risks-lng-import-terminal-glut-as-renewable-energy-edges-out-gas?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Europe is ramping up plans to build import terminals for LNG after Russia cut down its pipeline supplies, and some experts suggest bns of EUR in infrastructure could become \u201cstranded assets\u201d as the continent meets its energy transition targets. \u201cSome of the investments in LNG import infrastructure were made by markets based on the assumption that there\u2019s always going to be demand somewhere in Europe,\u201d an industry expert specializing in natgas tells Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The numbers:<\/strong> Europe\u2019s LNG import capacity is expected to rise about 50% over this decade, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ieefa.org\/articles\/over-half-europes-lng-infrastructure-assets-could-be-left-unused-2030\">report<\/a> published in March and cited by Bloomberg. However, some forecasts reveal that LNG demand is unlikely to increase, and could even fall, therefore leaving the EU with as much as 250 bn cubic meters of unused capacity by 2030, IEEFA concludes.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- The EU will source 42.5% of its energy from <\/strong><strong>renewables by 2030, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/eu-countries-finalise-425-renewable-energy-target-2023-05-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, referencing a finalized version of the new law it has seen. The European Union\u2019s legislation \u2014 set to be reviewed by EU diplomats tomorrow \u2014 confirms a political agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/03\/30\/energy\/european-union-renewables-climate-intl\/index.html\">agreed upon in March<\/a> laying out targets to increase the bloc\u2019s climate action targets from a 32% of renewables capacity by the end of the decade to a new binding commitment of a 42.5% share, and aims to have EU member states expand their individual renewables capacity to 45% of their total energy mix by 2030.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>DATA POINT- Dewa is at the top of its carbons emissions slashing game:<\/strong> State-owned Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has slashed carbon dioxide emissions by 218.3k tons since the launch of its High-Water Usage Alert service in 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303157519\">Wam<\/a> reports. The service sends instant notifications to users if its smart meter system detects unusual consumption rates. Without the new share purchase and deferred tax liability, Taqa\u2019s net income would stand at AED 1.9 bn \u2014 in line with last year\u2019s figures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drivers behind revenue gain:<\/strong> Taqa\u2019s increase in revenues was primarily due to \u201chigher <a href=\"https:\/\/regulationbodyofknowledge.org\/faq\/price-level-and-tariff-design\/cost-pass-throughs-should-bulk-tariffs-be-transferred-directly-to-final-consumers-through-adjustment-clauses-or-comparable-pass-through-mechanisms\/\">pass-through bulk supply tariffs<\/a>,\u201d or in other words, the price that the company sets for selling its upstream bulk supplies \u2014such as electricity or gas\u2014 to downstream distribution companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Green highlights from 1Q 2023:<\/strong> Taqa saw an 8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2022, which puts it \u201cfirmly on track to achieve its 2030 targets,\u201d according to the statement. Taqa and Adnoc Distribution <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3c2b3df7-6693-4917-b57d-b6dee4e54cae\">partnered in January<\/a> to establish a mobility joint venture, E2GO, to build and operate EV charging infrastructure in Abu Dhabi.
