<\/strong>Saudi Arabia\u2019s smart city Neom awarded a USD 2 bn rail project contract to Italy\u2019s Webuild and Saudi-based leading contractor Shibh Al-Jazira Contracting, while over in Europe, the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin came to a close with a flurry of meetings between climate dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The World Bank has a new president:<\/strong> The World Bank Group\u2019s executive board yesterday formally ushered in US candidate Ajay Banga to a five-year presidency term after holding a four-hour interview with the candidate. Ex-Mastercard CEO Banga \u2014 the unopposed shoo-in for the position \u2014 will assume his new role on 2 June, a day after current chief David Malpass makes his exit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story made headlines yesterday:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/world-bank-president-ajay-banga-climate-change-41613d3dc65234812fdc948061d054e5\">Associated Press<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/world-bank-board-poised-elect-us-nominee-ajay-banga-president-2023-05-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/05\/03\/world-bank-president-ajay-banga-climate-change\/65b30844-e9d5-11ed-869e-986dd5713bc8_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-03\/biden-world-bank-pick-wins-top-job-signals-climate-change-shift\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/03\/business\/ajay-banga-world-bank.html\">The New York Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-businessman-ajay-banga-approved-to-lead-world-bank-adb5f1ad\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Algeria plays both sides of the coin for energy investments: <\/strong>Europe should support investments in both natgas and renewables simultaneously to ensure a comprehensive and fair shift to green energy, Algerian daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.echoroukonline.com\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D9%83%D8%B4%D9%81-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D8%B4%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B7%D9%87%D8%A7-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%A9-%D9%85%D8%B9-%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%B1%D9%88\">El Shorouk<\/a> reports, citing Algerian Energy Minister Mohammed Arkab\u2019s statements at a EU-sponsored forum. Arkab said achieving climate targets and slashing carbon emissions should involve the use of natgas, which he claims is a low-carbon energy source. \u201cIt\u2019s important to point out the critical role played by natural gas in achieving our joint climate objectives, where natural gas allows slashing carbon emissions to a large extent in electricity generation and other sectors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the EU seems to agree: <\/strong>The EU is looking to source a chunk of its energy needs from Algeria, whether in the form of hydrogen, solar power, or natural gas imports, <a href=\"https:\/\/attaqa.net\/2023\/05\/02\/%d9%85%d8%b3%d8%a4%d9%88%d9%84-%d8%a3%d9%88%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%a8%d9%8a-%d9%84%d9%80%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%b7%d8%a7%d9%82%d8%a9-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ba%d8%a7%d8%b2-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%ac%d8%b2%d8%a7%d8%a6%d8%b1\/\">Attaqa<\/a> quotes EU Ambassador to Algeria Thomas Eckert as saying. The EU will continue to support Algeria as it looks to up its green hydrogen and solar generation, he said, adding Algeria\u2019s target to produce 15 GW of clean energy \u2014 a goal for which state-owned <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/9511f8b3-22e4-4836-a55d-f21382c72db9\">Sonelgaz<\/a> is tapped \u2014 will open the doors to further partnerships.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Algeria is earmarking bns for its green hydrogen sector:<\/strong> Algeria said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/903880ff-3695-4983-b933-7b2d38f5e2d8\">back in March<\/a> it will allocate between USD 20-25 bn to boost its green hydrogen production capacity.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Top fund managers are using green funds to invest in fossil <\/strong><strong>fuel:<\/strong> Green-branded investment funds are being used by some of the world\u2019s top fund managers to invest in fossil fuel companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/may\/02\/green-investment-funds-pushing-money-into-fossil-fuel-firms-research-finds\">the Guardian<\/a> writes, citing research by UK think tank Common Wealth. Asset managers \u2014 at outfits including Blackrock, State Street, and the UK\u2019s Legal and General \u2014 channeled nearly USD 1.5 bn in sustainability-linked funding to subscribe to oil, gas, and coal bonds, according to the news outlet..<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Sustainability-linked bonds might not be that great either:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/10\/10\/today-global-aviation-wants-to-reach-net-zero-by-2050-are-sustainability-linked-bonds-really-green-83293\/\">majority of<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/10\/10\/today-global-aviation-wants-to-reach-net-zero-by-2050-are-sustainability-linked-bonds-really-green-83293\/\">sustainability-linked bonds<\/a> are tied to weak, irrelevant, or already achieved climate targets. If firms fail to meet the targets they set out for themselves, they repay the capital they amassed from investors with financial penalties on top. Companies get cheaper financing and a green reputation without holding up their end of the bargain.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- TotalEnergies takes Greenpeace to court: <\/strong>French oil company TotalEnergies is suing environmental group Greenpeace and consulting firm Factor-X over a joint report which made claims Total misrepresented its carbon output for 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/totalenergies-sues-greenpeace-over-emissions-report-2023-05-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Total says the report \u2014 published in November \u2014 contains \u201cfalse and misleading information,\u201d and called for a judicial ruling to stop the publication\u2019s circulation or face a EUR 2k penalty per day. An initial procedural hearing of the case is scheduled for 7 September at the Paris judicial court, the newswire notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #4- A resistance by the world\u2019s top coal consumers? <\/strong>India \u2014 backed by China and South Africa \u2014 is trying to push a proposal within the G20 group to allow countries to opt for a roadmap to slash carbon emissions instead of a deadline to end fossil fuel dependence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/india-china-propose-multiple-pathways-cutting-use-fossil-fuels-sources-2023-05-02\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing three Indian government officials. One of the sources said India, which currently has the G20 presidency, wants to propose the phrase \u201cmultiple energy pathways\u201d in a communique at a summit in September. The rail project was awarded to a joint venture of Italy's largest construction company Webuild and Saudi-based leading contractor Shibh Al-Jazira Contracting (Sajco).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know:<\/strong> The rail project will extend south from The Line to Neom City station, passing through Neom Bay Mansions and Neom Bay Airport, all the way to Oxagon, according to the news outlet. It will also see a 75-km railway line under an infrastructure corridor which will also include seven roads, nine rail underpasses, 14 viaducts, and earthworks. The project will also include a freight line and other related infrastructure maintenance facilities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But first, a recap: <\/strong>Neom formally launched Oxagon as its integrated net-zero port and logistics hub powered entirely by clean energy. It is set to be home to several industries powered fully by renewables, including sustainable energy, autonomous mobility, water innovation, sustainable food production, health and well-being, technology, and digital manufacturing. Neom revealed plans last year for its landmark 170 km-long urban development The Line, based on a vision for \u201can environment [devoid of] roads, cars and emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>And that\u2019s not all, folks: <\/strong>Neom has reportedly asked selected contractors to submit proposals by 12 June for the building of tunnels as a railway link between the Neom Connector and high-speed rail line The Spine, the news outlet reports. They were also requested to submit bids for The Line\u2019s cut-and-cover tunnel segments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO FROM NEOM-<\/strong> The megacity\u2019s energy and water company Enowa signed a master agreement to potentially invest up to USD 6 mn to back necessary zero-waste water solutions developed by Penn State, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neom.com\/en-us\/newsroom\/zero-waste-water-research\">statement<\/a>. The funding will be provided for up to 15 projects with five on water declination, rare earth minerals, and metals recovery from water and brine, and lowering water line strain and water loss. German Climate Envoy Jennifer Morgan brought forward the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/COP28_UAE\/status\/1653689808181514240\">conversation<\/a> on COP28\u2019s goals on adaptation finance, progress on delivering on climate finance commitments, upping renewable energy capacities, and putting the Loss and Damage Fund into motion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Mitigation is the most important factor in the climate fight: <\/strong>\u201cIf we do not do more on mitigation, whatever we do on finance, on adaptation, on lost and damage, will fall on short on what we need,\u201d European Commission Executive Vice-President for the European Green Deal Frans Timmermans said in his <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/SPEECH_23_2567\">speech<\/a> in Berlin yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And tns are needed: <\/strong>While Timmermans made it clear that more needs to be done on mitigation and reducing emissions, he emphasized that the only way forward is mobilizing private finance. \u201cWe need to show private investors that it pays off to invest in the energy transition and circular economy,\u201d Timmermans said. already know: <\/strong>Scatec\u2019s planned electricity link \u2014 first <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5585902e-a80e-4c02-8c43-22eb12d7f175\">proposed in February<\/a> in a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly \u2014 would transmit some 3 GW of renewable power generated in Egypt to Europe through Italy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scatec are already investing in Egypt\u2019s renewables:<\/strong> The company is planning to sign a joint development agreement for a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b7089f22-eb65-4418-81c1-c5fb17e42672\">USD 5.5 bn green ammonia plant<\/a> in Ain Sokhna with Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM) and state fertilizer company Mopco and began commissioning the first phase of their <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3b3e6cad-637c-4ca8-afe6-94472fcc12d4\">100 MW green hydrogen<\/a> plant in Egypt\u2019s Ain Sokhna with SFE, OCI-Adnoc joint venture Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction back <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/952ee209-52e7-435e-860b-caf16ba6251b\">last November<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has more interconnectors with Europe in the pipeline: <\/strong>Egypt has been preparing to link its electricity grids with Greece and Cyprus through a subsea cable as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/03\/12\/egypt-cyprus-greece-begin-working-to-implement-usd-4-bn-electricity-interconnection-project\/\">USD 4 bn, 2 GW EuroAfrica Interconnector<\/a> project since 2018, while two direct Egypt-Greece links \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/cb41cd3c-8caa-4f64-8682-be3dbf55dd71\">3 GW Greece-Egypt Interconnector (GREGY)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f5631a2e-8e0d-46a5-97d6-5a7ba9ee2109\">2 GW Greece\u2013Africa Power Interconnector (GAP)<\/a> \u2014 are both being studied. Egypt and Italy are also discussing a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/be17125e-5ef4-438b-ab7a-4cff5bc6d20e\">separate 3 GW link<\/a> and could sign MoUs for the project in June. Egypt\u2019s grid is currently linked with Jordan, Palestine, Libya, and most recently Sudan, and will link up with Saudi via a <a Age skeletons in the UAE may harbor climate change clues:<\/strong> Archaeologists from the UAE\u2019s Ras Al Khaimah Department of Antiquities and Museums are partnering with researchers from US-based Quinnipiac University and the University of South Alabama for an archaeological study aimed at examining the impacts of climate change on human biology, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303153179\">Wam<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are they doing exactly?<\/strong> The students are studying the bio-archaeological potential of ancient skeletons found in Ras Al Khaimah in an effort to map out the effects of a historic drought some 4k years ago to understand how climate change affected communities in southeast-Arabia. The study is focusing particularly on human settlements dwelling in the Umm Al Nur and Wadi regions of the UAE and Oman, Wam notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Ras Al Khaimah?<\/strong> The region is particularly fertile ground for the study of the impacts of climate change given the abundance of large communal tombs, which will enable the researchers to examine the effects of a prolonged drought \u2014 nearly a century long in this case, Ullinger is quoted by Wam as saying. His team has already gathered a wealth of intel to be examined, he notes, adding that they have seen \u201cbones from the smallest babies to older individuals,\u201d enabling them to study climate-induced changes in health over time and potentially pinpoint correlations between climate change, infant mortality, and a host of diseases.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content
