But first, there\u2019s a couple of updates from the UAE to delve into.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORIES-<\/strong> The Abu Dhabi National Energy Company will invest GBP 25 mn in UK-based renewables developer Xlinks\u2019 Morocco\u2013UK Power Project and Emirates Steel Arkan is reportedly eyeing a minority stake in leading German conglomerate Thyssenkrupp AG\u2019s steel unit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The Netherlands will spend <\/strong><strong>EUR 28 bn (USD 31 bn) to finance a carbon slashing package<\/strong> aimed at pushing down carbon output at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030. The government intends to hike taxes for polluting industries in a bid to push them towards clean energy sources and deploy new renewables assets to minimize its reliance on oil and gas imports from the Ruskies. \u201cBy putting a lot of effort into our own renewable energy, we make ourselves less dependent on fossil energy from dubious regimes. We have our own clean and sustainable energy supply and therefore no longer have to be blackmailed by types such as (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,\u201d the country\u2019s Climate and Energy Minister Rob Jetten said in an address yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story got some coverage in the foreign press:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-netherlands-warming-emissions-carbon-8b9d9769d42e9d0beb2a9fa9b057bf54\">Associated Press<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2023\/04\/26\/climate-netherlands-warming-emissions-carbon\/c95e1a34-e44c-11ed-9696-8e874fd710b8_story.html\">The Washington Post<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/netherlands-spend-31-billion-drive-meet-2030-climate-goals-2023-04-26\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- An interconnection link between India and the Gulf could be in the <\/strong><strong>works: <\/strong>India is considering linking its power grid to Saudi Arabia and the UAE through undersea cables, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/world\/indian-sub-continent\/india-plans-to-link-power-grid-with-saudi-arabia-uae-fmdceoix\">Zawya<\/a> reports, citing an interview with India\u2019s Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/economy\/india-explores-power-links-with-saudi-uae-11682359197939.html\">Indian financial daily Mint<\/a>. Once approved by the cabinet, bilateral agreements will be signed with Riyadh and Abu Dhabi and bidding on detailed project reports will proceed, with each of the involved countries assessing project feasibility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We heard this before: <\/strong>Singh\u2019s statements come months after he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/india-uae-close-deal-renewable-electricity-grid-link-indian-minister-2023-01-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> that his country and the UAE were close to a \"major agreement\" on a renewable energy interconnection. The project would come under the <a href=\"https:\/\/isolaralliance.org\/work\/osowog\/\">One Sun, One World, One Grid<\/a> initiative by several countries to create renewable energy networks, he said earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- UAE\u2019s teachers set to receive training in climate <\/strong><strong>education<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s Education Ministry is establishing a national framework for climate action in education to be implemented across schools in the UAE in partnership with UNESCO and UNICEF, <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303150757\">Wam<\/a> reports. The ministry will provide training for 1.4k principals and 2.8k teachers \u2014 representing around half of the country\u2019s schools \u2014 to provide students with the climate education and green skills necessary to help them adapt to and prepare for the impacts of climate change. Once the training is completed, the schools will be awarded a green accreditation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- EU approves measures to boost SAF use: <\/strong>The EU has agreed to set binding targets for the European aviation industry to boost its use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) in a bid to decarbonize the industry, according to a European Parliament <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20230424IPR82023\/fit-for-55-parliament-and-council-reach-deal-on-greener-aviation-fuels\">statement<\/a>. The proposal aims to increase the use of SAF by ensuring fuel suppliers have 2% of the fuel accessible at EU airports as SAF in 2025, rising to 6% in 2030, 20% in 2035 and 70% in 2050. The EU carbon market is set to provide about EUR 2 bn to help airlines switch to SAF. Some 1.2% of fuels must also be synthetic fuels from 2030, rising to 35% in 2050. Aviation is a difficult sector to decarbonize and net zero aircrafts are not expected for another 10 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/eu-council-european-parliament-reach-provisional-deal-decarbonising-aviation-2023-04-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #4-<\/strong> <strong>VCs are banding together to make investment in tech <\/strong><strong>greener: <\/strong>Over 20 VCs, including US-based VC giants Union Square ventures, Tiger Global Management, 2150, and Prelude Ventures launched the Venture Climate Alliance (VCA) to make investment in tech more climate friendly, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/leading-venture-investors-form-global-alliance-to-build-net-zero-businesses-from-day-zero-301806332.html?tc=eml_cleartime\">a statement<\/a>. The VCA members collectively manage USD 62.3 bn in assets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/25\/vc-firms-form-62point3-billion-climate-tech-alliance-backed-by-un.html\">CNBC<\/a> reports. Members of the UN-backed coalition must disclose their carbon-neutrality targets for 2050 as well as the decarbonization strategies of their portfolio companies. VC members of the group will have the carbon footprint of their startups routinely assessed as part of VCA\u2019s stipulation that members must invest in green tech to effectively offset no less than 100 megatons of CO2 equivalent.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #5- \u2018Tis the year for EVs: <\/strong>Global demand for electric vehicles is set to rise by 35% this year to 14 mn vehicles as the industry continues to pick up pace, according to an International Energy Agency (IEA) <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/4\/1062.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a>. The EV share of the total auto market is forecast to surge to 18% in 2023, up 4 percentage points from 14% in 2022. The growing shift to EVs could help slash global demand for oil by 5 mn barrels a day by 2030, according to IEA projections.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The big three: <\/strong>Most EV sales are currently concentrated in three main markets \u2014 China, Europe, and the US. China continues to dominate EV sales, with 60% of global EV sales taking place in the country in 2022, the report notes. Over half of EVs on the road globally are in China. National Energy Company (Taqa) and GBP 5 mn from UK-based energy supplier and renewables investor <a href=\"https:\/\/octopus.energy\/\">Octopus Energy<\/a> for its <a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/morocco-uk-power-project\/\">Morocco\u2013UK Power Project<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taqa.com\/press-releases\/xlinks-first-of-a-kind-renewable-energy-project-secures-backing-from-taqa-and-octopus-energy\/\">company statement<\/a>. The interconnection project was initially estimated to cost <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/15ce2423-6613-4df0-bf73-bd560e7979d8\">GBP 18 bn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where\u2019s the money going? <\/strong>Xlinks will lay 3.8k km high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea cable to eventually transport 3.6 GW of renewable energy \u2014 nearly 8% of the the UK\u2019s current requirements \u2014 from a 10.5 GW solar and wind farm in Morocco\u2019s Guelmim-Oued Noun region to Britain\u2019s power grid in Devon, the statement said. The renewable plant will be supported by a 5 GW battery storage facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When will the project be operational?<\/strong> The project should be fully operational at its complete 10.5 GW capacity in 2030. Securing funding for the project has seen <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/23cad848-c456-4d92-9aab-718df4452c82\">much delay<\/a>, raising the question of whether the company will stick to the initial timeline set last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Xlinks held its second public consultation for the subsea interconnector last week: <\/strong>The company launched its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6e54b850-47ba-436b-8ef8-4b9ef15261a5\">second round of consultations<\/a> as it looks to secure building permits to lay underground, high-voltage, direct-current cabling as well as an alternating current converter station in Devon, UK. This set of consultations is set to wrap up on 31 May.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco has other interconnection projects in the pipeline: <\/strong>Spain signed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/88c92852-db0e-4997-84df-8d4537e709f2\">19 MoUs<\/a> with Morocco last February including some in renewables as it prepares to develop a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ree.es\/en\/press-office\/news\/press-releases\/2019\/02\/spain-and-morocco-agree-development-third-interconnection-between-both-countries\">third interconnection<\/a> line with a capacity to transport 700 MW of electricity, set to be operational in 2026.
