fasting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Muscat-based investment company Rakiza has raised USD 1 bn in its first infrastructure fund to invest in renewables, among other sectors, in Oman and Saudi Arabia. <strong>We have more on this story in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY-<\/strong> <strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/conferences\/water2023\">UN Water Conference<\/a><\/strong><strong> is kicking off today and running until<\/strong><strong> Friday in New York City.<\/strong> The conference is a midterm review of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/waterdecade\/#:~:text=The%20objectives%20of%20the%20Decade,of%20cooperation%20and%20partnership%20at\">International Decade for Action on Water for Sustainable Development<\/a> launched in 2018.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>OVER IN COPLAND - <\/strong>The COP28 Presidency called the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s 6th <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/sixth-assessment-report-cycle\/\">Assessment Synthesis Report<\/a> an \u201cideal\u201d chance to course correct and accelerate climate action while delivering fresh avenues for investment, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303140860\">statement<\/a>. The presidency stressed the importance of promoting inclusivity, shared accountability, and transparency in climate solutions, and the transformation\u2019s potential to unlock USD tns, as well as to generate jobs and promote growth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ireland reiterated its commitment to limit global warming to 1.5C and its support for the <\/strong><strong>UAE to make COP28 a success<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303140795\">Wam<\/a> quotes Irish Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion Josepha Madigan as saying. Madigan said loss and damage, mitigation and emission reduction remain a key priority for Ireland and the role of developed countries in \u201csetting global ambition ahead of COP28\u201d and stressed that Ireland\u2019s international climate action includes more than doubling its climate finance by 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- COP28 will prioritize equity and enhanced adaptation to ensure that the most <\/strong><strong>vulnerable are supported<\/strong>, Sultan Al Jaber said in a conversation with Bangladeshi Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Shahab Uddin, COP28 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/COP28_UAE\/status\/1638031766563725312?s=20\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Algeria is presenting its national hydrogen development<\/strong><strong> roadmap tomorrow<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/energyalgeria2021\/posts\/pfbid07qLPdso9FdaRAimHPuoUcd1fKynqs66TpXZKzeBvcJL6UtKs8kh6Q1vE8m8tng16l\">statement<\/a> released this week. The country\u2019s Energy and Mines Ministry will take the lead during a workshop to present the hydrogen development strategy in the presence of a number of stakeholders including the Environment and Renewable Energies Ministry and various national and international organizations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- EU commission proposes draft plan to appease <\/strong><strong>Germany: <\/strong>The EU commission and Germany are working on legislation allowing the sale and manufacture of combustion engine vehicles beyond the bloc\u2019s previously agreed termination date of 2035 provided they run on e-fuels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/eu-proposes-exception-e-fuel-combustion-engines-2035-2023-03-21\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The new law would, if passed, stipulate that cars manufactured beyond mid-2030 be powered by carbon neutral fuels. A sticking point in the draft legislation is the requirement that the new category of vehicles recognize e-fuels from regular CO2-emitting counterparts, forcing manufacturers to develop new engines catering to green fuels, the news outlet notes, citing sources familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- Germany <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2128d3d7-513a-4e42-8f8f-8d186c0c0a50\">postponed<\/a><\/strong><strong> the EU\u2019s vote to phase out combustion engine cars by <\/strong><strong>2035<\/strong> in February, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/54725c7f-fccd-4698-98c1-3991833cd634\">lobbying for a flexible<\/a> approach that would not see an outright prohibition of fuel-powered cars. Germany generates some EUR 411 bn per annum as Europe\u2019s top automaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-08\/spain-disappointed-by-germany-s-last-minute-challenge-to-car-ban\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>DATA POINT- Global renewable generation capacity witnessed a record 9.6% y-o-y<\/strong><strong> growth in 2022, <\/strong>according to the International Renewable Energy Agency\u2019s (IRENA) Renewable Capacity Statistics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/Publications\/2023\/Mar\/Renewable-capacity-statistics-2023\">report<\/a>. A whopping 83% of all power capacity added last year was produced by renewables, with significant growth in renewable generation capacity concentrated in Asia, the US and Europe. Renault says it plans to reskill 550 employees in its Morocco plant in a bid to acclimate them to manufacturing the EV and other upcoming models.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Renault has been securing the rare earths it needs for EV production:<\/strong> The company <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/761e8bf1-981e-4621-9635-89883897a9e5\">signed an agreement<\/a> in June last year with Moroccan mining firm Managem for the supply of 5k tons of cobalt sulfate \u2014 to be used in EV production \u2014 for seven years starting in 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco isn\u2019t slowing down plans to become an EV powerhouse: <\/strong>Renault Maroc is aiming to produce <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/761e8bf1-981e-4621-9635-89883897a9e5\">17k Mobilize Duo<\/a> EVs each year at its existing auto assembly plant in Tangier when it becomes fully operational. The company has recycled upward of 5 mn plastic bags at their factory in 10th of Ramadan City and aims to recycle more than 5 bn by 2025, co-founder Khaled Raafat tells the newswire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> Plastic waste is shredded, turned into a thick sludge, and combined with other materials, then undergoes thermal treatment and high-pressure compression to produce tiles that the company claims are twice as strong as concrete. TileGreen uses different kinds of plastics and products \u2014 repurposing around 125 plastic bags per tile \u2014 which would otherwise be difficult to <a href=\"https:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/2\/484476\/Egypt\/Society\/Out-of-Nile,-into-tile-Young-Egyptians-battle-plas.aspx\">separate and recycle<\/a>. The company has produced some 40k tiles since it began selling outdoor tiles last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt has a plastic pollution problem: <\/strong>Egypt is MENA\u2019s biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/marine-plastic-pollution-growing-egypt-big-factor-global-scale\/\">marine-plastic waste polluter<\/a> and the biggest polluter of the Mediterranean Sea, a 2022 World Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/2\/Blue-Skies-Blue-Seas-Air-Pollution-Marine-Plastics-and-Coastal-Erosion-in-the-Middle-East-and-North-Africa.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> found.
