The world is on track to warm by 3.2\u00b0C per year at current emission generation levels by the end of the century, the report finds, noting that meeting already pledged climate targets would still see warming levels increase by 2.2\u00b0C by 2100. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged developed countries to bring forward their carbon neutrality targets by a decade to 2040 following the study\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carbon levels are at a 2 mn-year high:<\/strong> The recorded rise in temperatures over the past 50 years is at a 2-millennium peak, the UN chief said in a recorded address yesterday. \u201cConcentrations of carbon dioxide are at their highest in at least 2 mn years. Al Jaber urged countries to \u201cscale up all available zero-carbon energy sources,\u201d calling on the world\u2019s governments to adopt policies that incentivize a faster rollout of battery storage, carbon capture, and hydrogen technologies. Al Jaber also pointed to the framework for the <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/839.pdf\">Global Goal on Adaptation<\/a> (part of the Paris Agreements), expressing the urgency to double adaptation finance while adopting policies that can effectively help countries adapt to increasing climate disasters. With regards to finance, Al Jaber dialed in on the role of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks, and their capacity to \u201cunlock much more concessional capital, lower risk, and attract more private finance.\u201d The yet-to-materialize loss and damage fund was also mentioned, along with the need to move forward with its implementation. The UAE is co-hosting the ministerial \u2014 attended by more than 40 government ministers from around the world \u2014 with Egypt and Denmark.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- VW\u2019s answer to Tesla: <\/strong>A new USD 25K Volkswagen EV model is expected to hit European markets in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-15\/vw-shows-25-000-ev-to-compete-where-tesla-has-left-an-opening\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported. The ID. 2all\u2019s relatively affordable price \u2014 despite having expensive batteries \u2014 is expected to compete with Tesla\u2019s vehicles and boost sales for Europe\u2019s largest automaker. The announcement comes days after VW revealed it will build its first non-European <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6fd504e5-869d-4d1c-9fca-7ea718a4390c\">battery factory in Canada<\/a> in a bid to localize its EV production chain in North America. The transaction gave Lekela an enterprise value of USD 1.5 bn, the parent company of one of the selling shareholders said in <a href=\"https:\/\/akerhorizons.com\/news\/mainstream-renewable-power-and-actis-complete-sale-of-lekela-power\/\">a statement<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it bought:<\/strong> Infinity Power now has a combined operational portfolio of 1.3 GW with a pipeline of 13.8 GW, making it the largest renewable energy company in Africa. Lekela currently has 1 GW of wind projects in Egypt, Senegal and South Africa in its portfolio and has another 1.8 GW in the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eight months in the making:<\/strong> Infinity <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/19\/infinity-will-become-africas-largest-renewables-player-through-lekela-acquisition-76096\/\">signed an agreement<\/a> last July to acquire 100% of the company from its two shareholders, private-equity firm Actis and Irish renewables developer Mainstream Renewable Power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where the money came from:<\/strong> The transaction was financed through equity investment from Infinity Power\u2019s shareholders and debt from Absa Corporate and Investment Banking (Absa CIB) and the Mauritanian Commercial Bank, according to the press release. The Africa Finance Corporation and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are key shareholders in Infinity, the latter of which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/17\/infinity-hassan-allam-utilities-masdar-ink-2-gw-green-hydrogen-agreement-ebrd-invests-more-in-infinity-87966\/\">has invested<\/a> more than USD 100 mn since 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le<\/strong><strong>kela wants to quadruple its energy production capacity: <\/strong>The company <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/21\/lekela-earmarks-usd-2-bn-to-grow-its-egyptian-renewables-portfolio-88313\/\">plans to invest<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/21\/lekela-earmarks-usd-2-bn-to-grow-its-egyptian-renewables-portfolio-88313\/\">USD 6 bn<\/a> to increase its capacity to 4 GW over the next four years. A third of this will go to Egyptian projects, a third to South Africa and the remainder to other African markets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infinity Power has been active on green energy: <\/strong>Only this month, Infinity Power and Germany\u2019s Conjuncta inked a MoU with Mauritania to build a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6e53437d-b885-4181-a9f3-6aeafb685881\">green hydrogen plant<\/a> in the West African country. The company is also part of a consortium of companies that includes Hassan Allam Utilities and the UAE\u2019s Masdar building a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/21\/lekela-earmarks-usd-2-bn-to-grow-its-egyptian-renewables-portfolio-88313\/\">10 GW onshore wind farm<\/a> in Egypt that will begin construction in 2024. The firm will extend its distribution network to supply 17k <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawinsider.com\/dictionary\/refrigeration-tons\">refrigeration tons (RT)<\/a> of cooling capacity from its nearby Meydan station.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> Empower plans to begin delivering its cooling services for two of the eight buildings this year, the statement notes. No details were given about the investment cost, or the expected operation date for the remaining buildings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Meydan plant:<\/strong> The Meydan district cooling plant is currently operating at a capacity of 45k RT, channeling cooling services to Meydan City, according to the statement. The new funding will go toward the company's efforts to genetically modify algae to produce low-carbon fuel for heavy, long-distance transport.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is algae biofuel?<\/strong> Grown in ponds, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.bio.org\/articles\/biofuels-promise-algae\">algae biofuel<\/a> or algal oil is an algae-based alternative to liquid fossil fuels that promises to produce lower-emission fuel, freeing up arable land for food crops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ExxonMobil\u2019s bye bye: <\/strong>The oil giant invested USD 350 mn in Viridos over the course of 12 years, but made a quiet exit \u2014 which was not made public until <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-10\/exxon-retreats-from-major-climate-effort-to-make-biofuels-from-algae?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">last month<\/a> \u2014 from algae biofuel development. Exxon told Bloomberg that it is redirecting its investments to hydrogen, carbon capture and biofuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest in a string of Big Oil withdrawals: <\/strong>With the exception of Chevron\u2019s involvement in Viridos\u2019 latest funding round, big oil companies have largely stepped away from funding the development of algae biofuel, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/mar\/17\/big-oil-algae-biofuel-funding-cut-exxonmobil\">The Guardian<\/a>. In 2011, Shell exited <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/baseload\/shell-exits-algae-as-it-commences-year-of-choices\/?cmpid=rss\">from the sector<\/a> and BP and Chevron reported disappointing or insignificant results from their projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it a risky investment? <\/strong>Algae researchers told The Guardian that developing the technology requires bns of USD to reap significant results and risks becoming a redundant investment for anything besides jets and boats as ground transportation has increasingly become electrified. The technology still has high potential for airlines, Bloomberg reports, with United Airlines\u2019 backing \u2014 which comes from the airline\u2019s USD mn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/from-the-sea-to-the-sky-united-invests-5-million-in-algae-based-fuel-producer-viridos-301769673.html\">sustainable flight fund<\/a> launched last
