But first, we have a couple of key developments from Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>KSA\u2019s Taqa will form a JV with Iceland\u2019s Reykjavik Geothermal to explore sources of geothermal energy in Saudi Arabia, and Saudi oil giant Aramco will work with British chemicals company Linde on ammonia cracking technologies and the establishment of a demonstration facility in Germany. <strong>We have more on these stories in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ICYMI- <\/strong>EnterpriseAM has an <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/03\/14\/green-fuels-explained-99884-3\/\">explainer<\/a> on what exactly green fuels are, where things stand, and what needs to happen for the industry to take off.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The impact of SVB\u2019s collapse on<\/strong><strong> finance for climate startups leaves press divided:<\/strong> The international business press was on two sides of the coin yesterday on the impact the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) will have on the global climate tech and finance sectors. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-13\/the-svb-failure-could-delay-community-solar-projects\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes that the lender\u2019s collapse is likely to hold back the sector as a result of the termination of its USD 3.2 bn commitment to fund innovation in the field, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/svb-collapse-threatens-funding-source-for-climate-startups-967ee45d\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>sharing the same sentiment. Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/svb-collapse-unlikely-hit-funding-climate-tech-hard-carney-2023-03-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> quoted UN Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance Mark Carney as saying the bank\u2019s collapse would not have a \u201cmaterial\u201d impact on the availability of financing for climate tech startups.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- A hydrogen fueling station for Oman\u2019s airport: <\/strong>Oman Shell and Oman Airports Management will set up solar-powered green hydrogen fueling stations near Oman International Airport by 2024, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/omans-first-hybrid-hydrogen-station-to-be-located-near-muscat-international-airport-in-2024-f1orvby1\">statement<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com.om\/en_om\/media\/2022-media-releases\/oman-shell-and-oman-airports-partner-in-green-hydrogen-for-mobility-project.html\">Green Hydrogen for Mobility project<\/a> will see the development of Shell\u2019s first on-site hydrogen production unit built to fuel 15 hydrogen cars provided by Shell, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- 2023 will be a make it or break it year for EV production: <\/strong>Rising energy prices, lack of subsidies, and costly minerals extraction could stall the EV industry in 2023, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2023-03-09-gartner-says-2023-is-the-moment-of-truth-for-battery-electric-vehicles\">research<\/a> by US consulting firm Gartner. The global EV market is facing a host of obstacles, including European electricity price hikes, a rise in taxation, the end of Chinese EV subsidies, and rising prices of critical minerals essential to EV production. Heftier minerals price tags would make it more challenging for EV makers to plug the production price gap compared to cheaper combustion engine vehicles, delaying the growth of EV manufacturing globally, Gartner says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China is on track to acquire half of the global EV market in the next few years:<\/strong> China has over 15 EV manufacturers already producing and selling all-electric cars at more affordable prices relative to competing brands, the research notes. The country\u2019s wealth of critical minerals \u2014 supplying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/02\/07\/amos-hochstein-us-is-behind-on-supply-chain-independence-from-china.html\">60%<\/a> of the world\u2019s rare earths \u2014 along with its battery manufacturing edge could lead it to capture more than 50% of global EV sales by 2026, according to Gartner.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Almost 60% of companies don\u2019t disclose supply chain<\/strong><strong> emissions:<\/strong> Only 59% of the 18.5k firms using nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\">CDP<\/a>\u2019s global system for reporting environmental impact disclose their supply chain emissions, a new <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.cdp.net\/cdp-production\/cms\/reports\/documents\/000\/006\/918\/original\/CDP-Supply-Chain-Report-2022.pdf?1678870769\">CDP report<\/a> found. Only 41% of the studied firms are reporting their scope 3 emissions \u2014 greenhouse gasses indirectly generated in companies\u2019 value chains, according to CDP\u2019s findings. The company launched the Taqa Geothermal Center of Excellence in Turkey in 2021 to study and share knowledge with global stakeholders on geothermal energy development, according to yesterday\u2019s statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The region\u2019s interest in geothermal energy is growing:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia signed an agreement with the Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) \u2014 a government agency tasked with sourcing and storing geological data \u2014 to \u201cexplore the sources of geothermal energy in the kingdom\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c36e751b-92e4-4bd7-9d5d-526732ac88a6\">last January<\/a>. This basically involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/08\/210830140251.htm\">splitting ammonia<\/a> into hydrogen gas and nitrogen using metal catalysts like nickel at very high temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And why is this important? <\/strong>To establish a commercially viable lower-carbon hydrogen supply chain, Aramco CTO Ahmad Al-Khowaiter says in the statement. In other words, effectively transporting hydrogen is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4d4fe41a-d676-4add-8b29-08a581d184fe\">notoriously difficult<\/a> and ammonia is an ideal way to distribute hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Aramco said it was earmarking \u201cmultiple bns of USD\u201d in a bid to establish itself as a major blue hydrogen exporter <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/909a2ca6-ec6c-4e78-a77f-380646c7fb18\">last November<\/a>. Al Khowaiter said export discussions with Japan and South Korea were the ones \u201cfarthest along\u201d with Aramco, which had sent test cargoes totaling 40 tons of blue ammonia to Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aramco.com\/en\/news-media\/news\/2020\/first-blue-ammonia-shipment\">in 2020<\/a>. As the renewables and EV industries gather steam globally, countries with lithium reservoirs like Iran \u2014 which recently announced the discovery of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a9fa3938-dccb-4de9-9110-d27093dc1a3a\">MENA\u2019s first reserve<\/a> earlier this month \u2014 will be able to rake in foreign direct investments and will see their political clout increase as demand for minerals essential to the clean energy transition grows. Iran announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/myb\/vol3\/2017-18\/myb3-2017-18-iran.pdf\">mining strategy<\/a> in 2017 in a bid to expand its minerals and metals sector, but still lacks the infrastructure to realize its target of becoming a minerals extraction hub. A potential solution to unlock its full capacity would be tapping foreign companies for the supply of machinery and technical know-how, Hijazi notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Installing floating solar energy panels on top of the world\u2019s water reservoirs could <\/strong><strong>minimize evaporation levels and produce massive amounts of energy<\/strong>, according to new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-023-01089-6\">research<\/a> published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/electricity\/electricity-in-the-us-generation-capacity-and-sales.php\">US Energy Information Administration<\/a>. Covering 30% of the world's 114.5k water reservoirs with floating solar PV installations would conserve the land used for ground-mounted systems and generate some 9.5 mn GWh of clean energy annually \u2014 enough to power 6.2k cities across 124 countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water security and energy efficiency: <\/strong>The floating panels would shade water that would otherwise evaporate due to heat exposure, saving enough water for some 300 mn people annually, the study notes. A single training of OpenAI\u2019s GPT-3 reportedly generated some 502 tons of CO2 and consumed enough energy to power 120 US homes for a year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/ftp\/arxiv\/papers\/2104\/2104.10350.pdf\">research<\/a>. While some companies use the AI programs to map out courses to optimize energy efficiency as in the case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepmind.com\/blog\/safety-first-ai-for-autonomous-data-centre-cooling-and-industrial-control\">Google<\/a> \u2014 which is using AI to control cooling and heating at its
