Let\u2019s jump right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY-<\/strong> The International Finance Corporation is set to invest USD 50 mn in Jordan Kuwait Bank\u2019s planned five-year green bond issuance with the proceeds of the sale going towards the development of energy-efficient buildings, renewables plants, and EV projects in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- A transatlantic bargain on minerals:<\/strong> The EU and US will begin negotiations on the supply of critical minerals essential for EV manufacturing, after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden agreed to the talks in a meeting at the White House on Friday. The allies are looking to reach a preliminary limited trade agreement that would see minerals extracted in the EU count toward EV tax credits under Biden\u2019s landmark Inflation Reduction Act as both sides of the Atlantic look to wean themselves off Chinese dependency in the energy transition. The proceeds of the issuance will be directed towards the development of energy-efficient buildings, renewable energy plants, and electric vehicle projects in the country, the statement notes. The date of the green bond\u2019s issuance was not disclosed, nor was the total sum the bank is looking to raise from the debt instrument.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where\u2019s the money coming from?<\/strong> The IFC will provide USD 36 mn of its investment in the green facility from its own account, along with a blended co-investment of up to USD 10 mn from the Canada-IFC Blended Climate Finance Program and USD 4 mn from the IFC-implemented, Dutch-funded MENA Private Sector Development Facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan\u2019s clean energy transition will require a lot more capital: <\/strong>The country needs to rake in c. USD 9.5 bn in investments between now and 2030 to move towards low-carbon development, according to the World Bank\u2019s Country Climate and Development <a href=\"https:\/\/openknowledge.worldbank.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/d6678f0c-d860-559b-99fa-e31ab663cd95\/content\">report<\/a>. The country will have to source 60% of the funds from private sector financiers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The IFC has been upping its investment in MENA renewables:<\/strong> The IFC plans to allocate 35% of its investments to green sectors \u2014 including MENA renewables \u2014 its MENA head of regional operations Sufyan Al Issa <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/933dd9c0-32fa-4e45-bd88-a336d8ef7ced\">said in December<\/a>. This followed news that the IFC is co-financing renewables projects of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3353d732-aa27-4d6d-95ba-2de58d5edd02\">roughly 1 GW<\/a> launched by UAE firm Al Nowais\u2019 subsidiary Amea Power in Egypt. The project\u2019s timeline and targeted production volume were not made public.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another Chinese-Egyptian green fuels facility in the offing?<\/strong> China Energy CEO Yee Jianming said his company could begin working on another planned USD 5.1 bn green hydrogen facility in Egypt as early as May this year, according to a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3SYLoRL\">cabinet statement<\/a>. A delegation from the Chinese firm will visit Egypt next month to iron out the project\u2019s details, the statement notes. No financial details were announced for the project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masdar\u2019s on a roll in Africa:<\/strong> Last week, Infinity Power Holding \u2014 a JV between Egypt\u2019s Infinity and Masdar \u2014 and Germany\u2019s Conjuncta signed an MoU with Mauritania last week to build <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6e53437d-b885-4181-a9f3-6aeafb685881\">a mega green hydrogen plant<\/a> in the West African country. The company also signed an agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ae5c70f9-e2dd-4262-986f-0d4bce65f3ce\">with Ethiopia in January<\/a> to develop up to 2 GW of solar capacity. The renewables giant <a href=\"https:\/\/news.masdar.ae\/en\/News\/2023\/01\/20\/10\/11\/Masdar-to-Develop-5-GW-of-Renewable-Energy-Projects\">inked another three agreements<\/a> to develop solar projects in Angola, Uganda, and Zambia with a combined generation capacity of 5 GW on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in January. The value of the three projects were not disclosed, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/zambia-uae-develop-2-billion-solar-projects-2023-01-17\/\">Reuters<\/a> revealed later that the Zambian solar projects were estimated to cost USD 2 bn. Last August, Masdar also <a href=\"https:\/\/news.masdar.ae\/en\/News\/2022\/08\/05\/13\/04\/Masdar-Signs-Agreement-with-Tanzanias-TANESCO\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Tanzania to develop renewable energy projects with a total capacity of 2 GW without disclosing the project cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the expansion is<\/strong><strong> part of the Etihad 7 initiative:<\/strong> The initiative \u2014 launched by the UAE\u2019s Foreign Ministry in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofaic.gov.ae\/en\/mediahub\/news\/2022\/1\/17\/17-01-2022-uae-projects\">January of last year<\/a> \u2014 aims to attract public and private funding to invest in Africa\u2019s renewable energy sector enabling the continent to generate 20 GW of renewable energy by 2035.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Masdar is not alone: <\/strong>UAE\u2019s Amea Power inked an agreement for a new 50 MW solar power plant in Ivory Coast <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2883848f-6efd-4305-8f0a-4d3485c9ec4c\">last January<\/a> and has solar projects in <a href=\"https:\/\/ameapower.com\/320-2-2\/\">Burkina Faso<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrik21.africa\/en\/mali-amea-power-to-build-a-50-mw-solar-power-plant\/\">Mali<\/a>. Metito is a Dubai-headquartered water management solutions provider and BII is the UK\u2019s development finance institution and impact investor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About AWID:<\/strong> The joint venture will target sustainable water projects at scale to address the funding gap in water security, Metito Managing Director Rami Ghandour and BII\u2019s Managing Director and head of Africa Chris Chijiutomi said at the launch event at the British Embassy in Cairo. The headquarters of the venture have not yet been set but AWID will initially operate from Dubai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The JV has been seeded with two existing projects:<\/strong> The first is a desalination project that has been operational in Egypt\u2019s Sharm El Sheikh since 1999, providing around 63 hotels with potable water and some wastewater management services. The second project is a water treatment facility that has been operating in Kigali, Rwanda for two years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metito has a track record in Egypt\u2019s water infrastructure industry:<\/strong> The company, alongside Orascom Construction, Hassan Allam Construction and Arab Contractors is developing the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/08\/09\/worlds-biggest-wastewater-plant-gets-more-financing-50102\/\">Al Mahsama agricultural drainage treatment plant<\/a>. Focused on providing water infrastructure in emerging markets, Metito wants to take a \u201cbold [investing] approach\u201d that \u201cbrings in private sector capital\u201d, Ghandour said. The results of the energy arbitrations study it conducted with London\u2019s Queen Mary University was announced during Abu Dhabi Global Markets (ADGM) flagship disputes event <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adgm.com\/events\/resolve-2023\">Resolve in Abu Dhabi<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What type of disputes are we talking about? <\/strong>Most sources of contention are believed to be coming from the price volatility of raw materials and energy, the report said. Some 28% of respondents see price volatility as the most likely reason for energy disputes over the next five years. Price volatility in raw materials could lead to commercial uncertainty and additional disputes in the key industry, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> Almost 29% of respondents see the Middle East seeing an acceleration in energy disputes, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/782.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> showed. A majority of 73% see Europe as the region set to be most hit with disagreements, with 36% and 27% of respondents picking Asia and Africa, respectively. They also see disputes related to energy transition accelerating significantly in the short to medium term.
