Let\u2019s dive right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>A global consortium comprising our friends at Infinity Power Holding \u2014 a JV between Egypt\u2019s Infinity and UAE\u2019s Masdar \u2014 and Germany\u2019s Conjuncta have signed a MoU to build up a mega green hydrogen plan in Mauritania. <strong>We have all the details on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-<\/strong> <strong>The German-Arab Chamber of Industry and Commerce will hold its <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/837.pdf\">first high-level<\/a><\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/837.pdf\">committee meeting<\/a><\/strong><strong> in Cairo on Sunday 12, March<\/strong> to discuss cooperation in renewables and green hydrogen. Egypt\u2019s Oil Minister Tarek El Molla, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker, International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat, and Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Stefan Wenzel will be attending the meeting.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Denmark kicks off commercial <\/strong><strong>operations for subsea carbon capture project:<\/strong> Denmark brought online a subsea carbon capture project with a storage capacity of 15k tons in collaboration with UK chemicals company INEOS Group Holdings and german oil producer Wintershall Dea AG. The carbon storage facility \u2014 located in the North Sea at a depleted oilfield off the coast of Denmark \u2014 sequesters carbon some 2 kilometers below the seabed. The consortium developing the project will make a final decision within 18 months whether or not to increase the facility\u2019s yearly storage capacity to 1.5 mn tons, and potentially 8 mn tons of CO2 by 2030 if the pilot and the second phase prove successful. Denmark is earmarking <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_23_128\">EUR 1.1 bn<\/a> for carbon capture and storage projects. <strong>The story was picked up by <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/pioneering-cross-border-co2-storage-begins-danish-waters-2023-03-08\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/03\/08\/denmark-offshore-carbon-capture\/e20e9d2a-bd9f-11ed-9350-7c5fccd598ad_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a><\/strong><strong>,<\/strong><strong> and <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-08\/carbon-capture-project-kick-starts-europe-s-climate-race-with-the-us#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE<\/strong> <strong>#1- COP transitional committee is zoning in on COP27\u2019s landmark<\/strong><strong> loss + damage fund:<\/strong> The first meeting of the COP transitional committee set to take place before the end of his month will look into \u201cthe right formulation\u201d for <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b485ea89-be82-498c-a46a-47e7ddcae91e\">the loss and damage fund<\/a> that threatened to leave negotiations in Sharm El Sheikh deadlocked, Egypt\u2019s lead climate negotiator Mohamed Nasr said in a virtual press conference attended by Enterprise Climate. He said he expects L&D to be operational by the end of the year. \u201cWe\u2019ll get a sense [on when it could be implemented] during the first meeting of the transitional committee,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Should wealthy developing countries pay up? <\/strong>That\u2019s not the way to look at it, Nasr argues. \u201cWhat is important is that there are funding arrangements that can deliver rather than a [sole] focus on how much contributors will pay,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 1.5\u00b0C warming goal should not be left to die:<\/strong> The ambitious global warming limit is still necessary given the severe climate catastrophes seen \u201cwhile we\u2019re only still at 1.2\u00b0C,\u201d Nasr said. \u201cIt\u2019s achievable if the right ingredients are in place,\u201d he added, with those including necessary funds, technologies and others. Nasr also spoke on the controversy related to phasing out of dirtier fossil fuels, arguing that raising renewables share in the energy mix \u2014 rather than a full phasing out of the dirty fuel \u2014 could be a more realistic option.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hand-in-hand with the UAE:<\/strong> The COP27 presidency is working with counterparts of COP28 host UAE to build up joint understandings on climate goals. \u201cThis step to build up on precious COPs is important to ensure continuation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2<\/strong>- <strong>The EU will establish a new authority for minerals:<\/strong> The European Union could launch a central agency to buy essential energy transition minerals including cobalt, lithium, and manganese on behalf of the entire bloc as part of its Critical Raw Minerals Act, a draft of which was seen by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/eu-climate-change-minerals\/eu-to-set-up-central-buying-agency-for-critical-minerals-draft-law-idINL8N35F4IE\">Reuters<\/a>. The EU has a target to produce 10% of its mineral demands by 2030 in a bid to eliminate its dependence on China, which currently supplies 95% of the global supply, the newswire notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>The new European Critical Raw Materials Board would streamline permitting procedures for investors looking to launch mining projects in the bloc, and would provide financing for projects it deems strategic, according to Reuters. Under the proposed law, the agency would grant permits for companies looking to undertake mining projects within 24 months, with the deadline for minerals processing projects set at 12 months, the newswire notes. The CRMA draft is set to be released next Tuesday, 14 March.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3<\/strong>- <strong>Italy backs the thumbs down on EU combustion engine ban: <\/strong>Italy welcomed the postponement of the Tuesday EU vote to terminate the sale of fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 after Germany backtracked on February\u2019s pre-agreed target, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-03-08\/spain-disappointed-by-germany-s-last-minute-challenge-to-car-ban\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin \u2014 who said his country would vote against the bill last month \u2014 said \u201celectric cars cannot be the only solution for the future,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/eu-delays-vote-combustion-engine-phaseout-after-german-pushback-2023-03-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The project will be implemented over four phases, with the first phase of the plant set to be operational by 2028 with a potential capacity of 400 MW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exports in the pipeline: <\/strong>The renewable fuels produced will be used for export, according to the statement, although the destinations have not been disclosed. Conjuncta CEO Stefan Liebing says Germany could be \u201ca potential offtaker of green energy,\u201d the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said:<\/strong> \u201cThis green hydrogen plant \u2026 will provide not only the North-West but the entire continent of Africa with a clean, renewable energy source that will in turn foster a cleaner, greener future for us all,\u201d Infinity Power Chairman Mohamed Ismail Mansour said. Liebing said the project was \u201cby far the largest bilateral investment project ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany\u2019s on the hunt to replace Russian energy flows<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Germany has been trying to boost its renewables potential to make up for the energy crunch on the back of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Masdar and Australian utilities company Verbund inked an agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/99df014e-1726-4272-a3ff-1f26afb4c7ab\">last month<\/a> on green hydrogen, with Southern Germany among several regions set to receive green fuel exports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s not the only one in place:<\/strong> The agreement with Verbund follows another with Germany\u2019s Uniper to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f80ba49e-4780-4fba-b4dc-ceca09801618\">develop a green hydrogen plant<\/a> in the UAE powered by 1.3 GW of solar energy. The plant is expected to generate green hydrogen by 2026 and the EU wants to import the clean fuel the facility will generate. Germany recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1e3ed2fa-cf96-4d35-9f17-7d894f507e0b\">it will join<\/a> a planned green hydrogen pipeline partnership with France, Spain and Portugal in a bid to make up for the loss of Russian fuel imports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Infinity has also been active on green hydrogen in Egypt:<\/strong> Infinity Power announced during COP27 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b951914f-8f47-4484-8ab2-5bf744e03c0d\">last year<\/a> it will build two green hydrogen production plants \u2014 one in Egypt\u2019s Suez Canal Economic Zone and the other on the Mediterranean \u2014 as part of a consortium including Egypt\u2019s Hassan Allam Utilities and UAE\u2019s Masdar. The plants will produce up to 480k tons of green hydrogen a year, with the SCZone facility due to come online in 2026. The plan would save up some 1k MW of additional capacity and slash carbon footprint by 25%, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And an accelerated pace:<\/strong> The Moroccan subsidiary plans to accelerate bringing online the 96 MW Noor Midelt solar generation plant, Iraqui said. Taqa Morocco has 100 MW of wind energy projects in the country\u2019s north and 600 MW in pre-development in the south, he added. Iraqui said his company is currently on the search for suitable areas to install a further 200 MW of wind energy capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> Morocco has been pushing with efforts to position itself as an export hub for renewable energy and green hydrogen to Europe. Spain<a href=\"http:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/06\/spain-morocco-shake-hands-on-renewables-agreements-eur-880-mn-credit-line-95556\/\">extended a EUR 800 mn credit line<\/a> to Morocco last month and signed 19 MoUs including a renewable energy development agreement with the country during a visit by Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez.
