Let\u2019s dive in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Regional news is at a standstill this morning, but one blip on the radar comes out of UAE where Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer) signed a partnership agreement with France\u2019s Sulo to establish an integrated waste management network in Abu Dhabi. <strong>We have all the details in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Climate activist<\/strong> <strong>Greta Thunberg is <\/strong><strong>making headlines again after blocking the doors to Norway\u2019s energy ministry<\/strong>, accusing the country of \u201cgreen colonialism\u201d over plans for a mega wind farm built on indigenous lands. Thunberg and dozens of climate activists from Norway\u2019s Sami community staged a protest in front of Norway\u2019s energy ministry in Oslo yesterday, demonstrating against plans to construct the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statkraft.com\/about-statkraft\/where-we-operate\/norway\/fosen-vind\/\">1 GW wind project<\/a>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20230227-greta-thunberg-and-sami-activists-protest-illegal-wind-turbines-in-norway\">AFP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/thunberg-other-protesters-block-norway-energy-ministry-over-wind-farms-2023-02-27\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3e3813c9-e568-49f9-a64c-7d7da03f4d36\">Financial Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/norway-protests-target-wind-farm-on-land-used-by-herders\/2023\/02\/27\/cdf22948-b696-11ed-b0df-8ca14de679ad_story.html\">Washington Post<\/a>)<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY- <\/strong><strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilitymag.com\/events\/sustainable-aviation-futures-mena-congress\">Sustainable Aviation Futures MENA Congress<\/a><\/strong><strong> is taking<\/strong><strong> place today in Dubai. <\/strong>The event will bring together some 40 speakers from a range of organizations including airlines, aviation authorities, clean energy startups and banks. Panels will discuss regional airline sustainability strategies, prospects for commercial collaboration, and aviation-focused decarbonization incentives.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong><a id=\"tldr-story-03\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> WATCH THIS SPACE #1: France is eyeing a pro-nuclear EU alliance: <\/strong>France will attempt to rally support for the inclusion of nuclear power as a low carbon energy source in EU policies in a meeting with 12 other EU countries today, ahead of further EU negotiations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/france-seeks-pro-nuclear-alliance-eu-energy-talks-2023-02-27\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The meeting will take place on the sidelines of an EU ministerial gathering in Stockholm, where French energy minister Agnes Pannier-Runache is set to make the case once again for nuclear energy to be counted towards the EU\u2019s energy security and clean power generational targets, the news outlet notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU countries remain divided on the role of nuclear energy:<\/strong> Debate over whether nuclear-derived hydrogen should be allowed to count towards the EU\u2019s renewable energy generation targets has <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d0225f94-a58c-498e-aa9d-0d8cf242502e\">delayed the finalizing of a text<\/a> outlining the EU\u2019s diplomatic priorities ahead of COP28 \u2014 which was supposed to be agreed on by member countries on last week.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-04\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- <\/strong><strong> The EU is shifting its worries away from US <\/strong><strong>climate subsidies\u2026:<\/strong> Recent assessments ranking EU incentives for clean energy production as equal to or even exceeding benefits from US President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)<\/a> are assuaging Europe\u2019s anger over the landmark climate bill \u2014 which has been the source of heated debate in recent months \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-26\/europe-incentives-on-clean-energy-rival-biden-s-green-subsidies#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported earlier this week. The IRA\u2019s offering of roughly USD 369 bn in subsidies for clean energy programs in the coming decade had prompted several EU leaders to accuse the US of trying to lure green investment away from Europe. The amount of funding for climate-friendly initiatives put forward by the EU \u201cis at least comparable to the amount of money that the Americans are putting on the table,\u201d EU climate policy chief Frans Timmermans said recently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026and onto China:<\/strong> Heavy reliance in Europe on Chinese imports for renewables production \u2014 including solar panels and batteries \u2014 still leaves the bloc vulnerable, while the US is more likely to create its own domestic supply chain, Bloomberg quotes Bruegel think tank representative Alicia Garcia-Herrero as saying. Europe should look at closer collaboration with the US to help mitigate this risk, Garcia-Herrero added.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- There\u2019s a new ESG bond in town, says the World Bank, and it\u2019s <\/strong><strong>\u201cimmune\u201d to greenwashing:<\/strong> The World Bank has raised USD 50 mn through an outcome-based bond linked to voluntary carbon credits \u2014 a structure it terms \u201cimmune from any greenwashing concern,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-22\/world-bank-touts-an-esg-bond-it-says-is-immune-to-greenwashing#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported last week. The five-year bond is set to offer a return some 100 bps above what a typical World Bank bond would offer, and will be used to fund a project to manufacture 300k water purifiers in Vietnam to reduce emissions associated with burning wood to boil (and purify) water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Instead of regular coupon payments, investors will receive semi-annual coupons linked to verified carbon units generated through the project. \u201cWe\u2019re completely transparent where the foregone coupon is going, what the risk is and what the outcome measurement metric is,\u201d a World Bank representative said. Normal green bonds, on the other hand, would enable issuers to allocate proceeds to multiple projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new structure will help finance projects that wouldn\u2019t normally attract bond market <\/strong><strong>funding<\/strong>, Bloomberg quotes a World Bank representative as saying, adding that large global asset managers are already showing interest in the new structure. This could prompt the need for a rethink of renewables infrastructure planning to prevent existing or planned wind power resources from becoming stranded assets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s happening, in a nutshell? <\/strong>The larger the temperature difference between the poles and the tropics, the stronger the speed of global winds. The Arctic appears to have warmed faster than the rest of the world since 1979 \u2014 and as its temperature difference with the equator has narrowed, wind speeds have fallen, the FT notes. The timeframe and financials of the partnership agreement were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> Sulo and Tadweer will explore the possibility of using recycled waste in manufacturing, and establishing unified pre-waste collection systems in other parts of the UAE and MENA, the news agency notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tadweer has been on a roll lately:<\/strong> Tadweer inked five agreements with UAE-based firms in the fields of waste management and transport in Al Ain and Abu Dhabi <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5f81dc8f-2dec-496c-975b-7c2c102b7588\">totaling c.USD 545 mn<\/a> in January. The Economist Intelligence Unit <a href=\"https:\/\/pages.eiu.com\/rs\/753-RIQ-438\/images\/ScalingUpThePotentialEconomicImpactofArtificialIntelligencePublicPolicy.pdf\">estimated in 2019<\/a> that Saudi Arabia and the UAE alone could add USD 200 bn and USD 122 bn to their economies from value added by AI by 2030, while the Google-Economist report says MENA stands to gain USD 320 bn within the same timeframe. Value added by AI is largely realized by automation-driven cost savings and product and service improvement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI\u2019s role in the climate sphere: <\/strong>AI can be used to monitor, predict, forecast, design and optimize climate impacts and solutions, which can help businesses and governments measure the environmental footprint of products and policies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> By using real-time data and near-real-time analytics, AI can be used to monitor the environmental impact of products, business, policies, and events, whether through satellite observation or smart micro-solutions like smart metering. The UN Environmental Program\u2019s (UNEP) <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unep.org\/\">World Environment Situation Room<\/a>, for example, uses AI to analyze datasets and generate predictive forecasts to track CO2 and methane emissions, provide near-real-time insights on the impact of air quality for health protection measures, as well as predict sea level rise and changes in glacier mass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GCC has ambitious AI strategies: <\/strong>In 2017, the UAE published its <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.gov.ae\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/UAE-National-Strategy-for-Artificial-Intelligence-2031.pdf\">AI strategy (pdf)<\/a> \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.gov.ae\/about_us\/\">appointed<\/a> a minister of state for artificial intelligence \u2014 with the aim of making the country one of the world\u2019s leaders in AI by 2031. Saudi Arabia launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/ai.sa\/Brochure_NSDAI_Summit%20version_EN.pdf\">National Strategy for Data and AI (pdf)<\/a> in 2020, which includes KPIs that aim to place the kingdom in the top 15 globally when it comes to AI, with a focus on governance, healthcare, energy and mobility. More recently in 2021, Qatar published its <a href=\"https:\/\/qcai-blog.qcri.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/QCRI-Artificial-Intelligence-Strategy-2019-ENG.pdf\">AI strategy (pdf)<\/a> prioritizing transportation, food security, and improving efficiency in oil and gas processes to reduce downtime and pollution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And MENA isn\u2019t far behind: <\/strong>Egypt formed the National Council for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) in 2019 and unveiled its <a href=\"https:\/\/mcit.gov.eg\/en\/Publication\/Publication_Summary\/9283\">AI strategy (pdf)<\/a>, which includes using AI for agriculture, water management and environment, manufacturing and smart infrastructure management. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oman.om\/wps\/portal\/index\/artificialintelligence\/!ut\/p\/a1\/hc7LCoJQEAbgZ2nhMmfSEG0nSOYNEc30bELjdBTUI2pZb59Jm6DL7P7h-5kBAgmQJruWLBtK3mTVMxPl6AcrZbXz0VHNGDEwXGsvRaFkWjiBdAL4ZXT81w9pAwcgM5PRRPQ1y3MiT0dJjre25iqyYaxf4McZGwireD6_nOpNLqsMSEfPtKOdeOmmdTEMbb8RUMBxHEXGOauoeOK1gJ8qBe8HSN4ltHVys5Ykv4_64gHXVInB\/dl5\/d5\/L0lKQSEvUUt3SS80RUkhL2Vu\/\">Oman<\/a>, which published its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oman.om\/wps\/portal\/index\/artificialintelligence\/!ut\/p\/a1\/hc7LCoJQEAbgZ2nhMmfSEG0nSOYNEc30bELjdBTUI2pZb59Jm6DL7P7h-5kBAgmQJruWLBtK3mTVMxPl6AcrZbXz0VHNGDEwXGsvRaFkWjiBdAL4ZXT81w9pAwcgM5PRRPQ1y3MiT0dJjre25iqyYaxf4McZGwireD6_nOpNLqsMSEfPtKOdeOmmdTEMbb8RUMBxHEXGOauoeOK1gJ8qBe8HSN4ltHVys5Ykv4_64gHXVInB\/dl5\/d5\/L0lKQSEvUUt3SS80RUkhL2Vu\/\">AI strategy<\/a> in 2020, includes among its target areas urban planning and smart cities, agriculture, energy, as well as plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omanobserver.om\/article\/34146\/Main\/duqm-to-be-developed-as-smart-city\">transform<\/a> the city of Duqm into a smart city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AI climate investments are on the rise: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neom.com\/en-us\/ourbusiness\/sectors\/technology-and-digital\">Neom<\/a> \u2014 which partnered with Oracle and NVIDIA in AI technology at LEAP23 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabianbusiness.com\/industries\/technology\/neom-announces-ai-technology-partners-at-leap23\">earlier this month<\/a> \u2014 is incorporating AI and advanced robotics into its DNA, including promises of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neom.com\/en-us\/ourbusiness\/sectors\/mobility\">fully autonomous<\/a> transportation system for the smart city. Last year, Saudi\u2019s Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority <a href=\"https:\/\/fastcompanyme.com\/news\/google-cloud-partners-with-saudi-arabia-for-ai-based-earth-observation-program\/\">partnered up<\/a> with the Google Cloud Platform for Cloud Computing and the Climate Engine Foundation for climate research to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3e3bf043-7661-41c5-8fbc-94ece4148f94\">launch<\/a> a scientific program for Earth foresight, which uses AI to address environmental preservation, pollution control, sustainable agriculture, climate and nature protection, and water and food security.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transport AI systems are the regional frontrunners: <\/strong>Transport AI systems are forecast to contribute some 15% to the GDPs of the GCC and Egypt by 2030, according to the Google-Economist report. This includes predictive transport management and traffic safety as well as autonomous vehicles. As electric vehicle adoption increases, AI is increasingly being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2542435121003500\">monitor and predict demand<\/a> and usage of charging terminals, optimize battery usage and improve safety and efficiency. Dubai\u2019s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is using AI to improve its public bus service by shortening journeys, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303084324\">reducing fuel consumption<\/a> and increasing bus ridership using big data gathered from smart cards, buses and taxis. It is also being used in the aviation industry, with Etihad signing an agreement <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/en-xm\/2021\/11\/15\/etihad-airways-partners-with-microsoft-on-driving-sustainability-strategy\/\">last year<\/a> to begin using AI to measure and benchmark its environmental footprint.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And contributions by the energy sector are picking up speed: <\/strong>AI systems are forecast to contribute more than 6% to the region\u2019s energy GDP by 2030, according to the report. This includes using AI technologies to improve energy management and efficiency, forecast energy demand, achieve renewable energy targets, refitting electricity grids, monitor grid stability, optimize energy usage and reduce system losses and carbon emissions. In much of the GCC, the infrastructure needed to employ AI has been installed, with examples including in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/1842396\/corporate-news#:~:text=The%20Saudi%20Electricity%20Company%20(SEC,of%20less%20than%2013%20months.\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dewa.gov.ae\/en\/about-us\/media-publications\/latest-news\/2021\/07\/dewa-installs-over-2-million\">Dubai<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taqa.com\/press-releases\/advancedmetering\/\">Abu Dhabi<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/business\/smart-meters-plan-on-track-in-bahrain-kht6inxo\">Bahrain<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utilities-me.com\/news\/17121-oman-to-roll-out-12-million-smart-meters-in-five-years\">Oman<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeninsulaqatar.com\/article\/09\/01\/2022\/kahramaa-installs-200000-smart-electricity-meters\">Qatar<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/utilities\/kuwaits-ministry-continues-installation-of-smart-meters-in-new-private-housing-areas-g1f7oup0\">Kuwait<\/a>. Meters \u2014 paired with IoT, Big Data and AI \u2014 will improve energy efficiency and energy needs forecasting, as well as help to identify weaknesses in the energy systems. Critically, AI can aid in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2021\/03\/artificial-intelligence-is-key-to-grid-resilience\/\">decentralization and optimization<\/a> of renewable energy as utilities shift to a regulatory role, shifting excess electricity to parts of the grid where energy is needed and detecting surpluses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>State-owned oil and gas companies in the GCC are only hopping on the bandwagon: <\/strong>Oil and gas companies are increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offshore-technology.com\/data-insights\/top-ranked-oil-and-gas-companies-in-artificial-intelligence\/\">investing<\/a> in AI to optimize operations, reduce risks and costs, minimize their environmental footprint and monitor greenhouse gas emissions. Oil giant Aramco <a href=\"https:\/\/saudigazette.com.sa\/article\/619075\">signed<\/a> an MoU with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaust.edu.sa\/\">King Abdullah University of Science and Technology<\/a> last April for a <a href=\"https:\/\/cemse.kaust.edu.sa\/ai\">research center<\/a> advancing AI technology, and in 2021, Aramco <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aveva.com\/en\/about\/news\/press-releases\/2021\/aveva-and-aramco-plan-to-partner-to-realize-key-sustainability-goals-through-digitalization\/\">partnered up<\/a> with the UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aveva.com\/en\/\">Aveva<\/a> to use digital technologies including AI to drive sustainability. In 2019, Aramco <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aramco.com\/en\/magazine\/elements\/2022\/the-ai-hub-at-aramco#:~:text=The%204IR%20Center%20was%20established,a%20technology%2Denabled%20collaborative%20environment.\">established<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aramco.com\/en\/magazine\/elements\/2022\/the-ai-hub-at-aramco\">4IR Center<\/a>, an AI center that includes in its scope using AI to reduce the carbon footprint of fossil fuel extraction and deployment. T\u00f4mTex also makes pleather (plastic fabric that looks like leather), suede, latex and vinyl, among other things, to make a compostable material, according to its website. Its product, which is on the verge of being commercially-ready, has been showcased by luxury fashion houses earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Shellfish leather is made by combining a biochemical called chitosan extracted from shrimp shells with water and organic acid, along with a combination of biomaterials and pigments, then putting it into a heater to remove excess water. The leather-like fully biodegradable fabric that emerges from the ovens lacks cow leather\u2019s distinct smell, but feels and looks pretty much the same, according to the company. The process produces slightly less emissions than synthetic leather and less than 15% of emissions produced from cow-skin leather production. Chitosan is already used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/chapters\/52359\">wastewater treatment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780128124918000643\">food supplements<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6415442\/\">medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sustainable fashion is finding a niche, even if it\u2019s not fully scalable yet: <\/strong>Sustainable fashion startups are turning to plant-based alternatives to combat the use of fossil fuel-based products, with some using <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c08a0d63-9ee0-43a3-9f8d-1c6f597906a7\">algae-based materials<\/a> and others using materials like mushrooms, hemp, wood residue, and even spoiled milk, Bloomberg reports.
