Researchers participating in the conference had the opportunity to submit their papers last year to be discussed during the conference, with a chance to be published in an academic journal. You can find more details on the agenda <a href=\"https:\/\/icom2023.com\/fintech\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-04\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>OVER<\/strong> <strong>IN COP LAND- Al Jabar sets the scene for COP28\u2019s priorities: <\/strong>COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303131775\">laid out<\/a> some key mitigation and adaptation priorities set to inform November\u2019s discussions in a speech yesterday at the <a href=\"https:\/\/wsds.teriin.org\/\">World Sustainable Development Summit<\/a>. Mitigation priorities include tripling renewable energy capacity, doubling hydrogen production, increasing nuclear power, improving battery storage, and growing the scale and efficiency of carbon capture. Food and water will also be COP28 priorities through examining how to reduce emissions in food systems and focusing on agri-tech and sustainable water use, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doubling down on adaptation finance: <\/strong>COP28 \u201cmust conclude\u201d the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) and finalize an agreement on doubling adaptation finance, Al Jaber emphasized. Established through the 2015 Paris Agreement, the GGA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/articles\/deep-dive\/glass-global-goal-adaptation-cop-27#:~:text=In%202015%2C%20the%20Paris%20Agreement,adaptation%20on%20par%20with%20mitigation.\">was designed<\/a> to raise awareness of the importance of adaptation, so it would be viewed with similar urgency to mitigation. Adaptation priorities also include protecting biodiversity and nature-based solutions, Al Jaber added.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a id=\"tldr-story-02\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> The UAE-India renewables partnership is real: <\/strong>The UAE will explore \u201call opportunities\u201d to partner with India to help develop the country\u2019s low carbon infrastructure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/uae-eyes-renewables-partnerships-with-india-jaber-says-2023-02-22\/\">Reuters<\/a> quotes Al Jaber as saying. Top wafer manufacturers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.longi.com\/\">LONGi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.tzeco.com\/\">TCL<\/a> raised their prices by some 20% in the last few weeks, while top cell maker <a href=\"http:\/\/en.tongwei.com\/\">Tongwei<\/a> hiked its prices by around 8.5%, it noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Polysilicon price fluctuations illustrate the volatility:<\/strong> The addition of new manufacturing plants late last year drove down the prices of polysilicon \u2014 the core material in solar panels \u2014 leading major producers to attempt to support prices in recent weeks by reducing sales, Bloomberg noted. The firm will invest<\/p>\n<p>AED 450 mn (USD 122 mn) to construct two plants that will provide more than 63k <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawinsider.com\/dictionary\/refrigeration-tons\">refrigeration tons (RT)<\/a> of cooling capacity at the maritime zone. No details were given about the timeframe for getting the project up and running.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> Empower will deliver cooling services to 43 buildings in two separate phases. The first phase will supply more than 28k RT 27 buildings, and another 35k RT will be provided to the remaining buildings in the second phase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Owned by DP World, DMC is an industrial and commercial par<\/strong>k featuring maritime logistics services, residential properties, hotels, and retail outlets. The new findings may be the gateway to more efficient, low-cost production of green hydrogen, potentially accelerating the roll out of the sustainable fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART-<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/14982\/nanowire\">Nanowires<\/a> are wires with a thickness of only a few nanometres \u2014 a metric equivalent to one billionth of a meter. Previous studies have found that a semi-liquid mixture of nanoparticles \u2014 called particle suspension reactors (PSRs) \u2014 can absorb sunlight and use the energy to convert liquid water into <a href=\"https:\/\/college.unc.edu\/2023\/02\/designer-silicon-nanowires\/\">oxygen and hydrogen gas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why add silicon to the mixture? <\/strong>Most demonstrations of PSRs were unsuccessful in generating enough energy for water splitting given that the semi-liquid mixture is only able to absorb ultraviolet light, leaving visible and infrared light unutilized, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-00154-6\">summary of the paper<\/a> explains. Silicon however, absorbs both visible and infrared light, which means it can absorb more sunlight to produce hydrogen more effectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new design is inspired by solar panel technology: <\/strong>Even with the addition of silicon, the nanowires may not have enough photovoltaic particles \u2014 particles that convert light into electricity \u2014 to produce hydrogen from water. This prompted the researchers to encode multiple photovoltaic cells in each silicon particle, designing the silicon nanowires to have multiple \u201csolar cells\u201d along their axis to produce enough power needed to split water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lower hydrogen production cost is crucial for the energy transition: <\/strong>The global and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/07\/europe-could-be-our-biggest-green-hydrogen-export-market-what-needs-to-happen-to-get-trading-off-the-ground-95718\/\">regional<\/a> hydrogen economy have both been riddled with technological and infrastructure barriers. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/357475093_Sustainable_hydrogen_production_Technological_advancements_and_economic_analysis\">study published last December<\/a> found that steam methane reforming and coal continue to dominate the supply side of hydrogen given their low production costs of under USD 3.50 per kg compared to USD 10 per kg for solar-powered hydrogen production. This leaves little room for economic incentive to transition to a cleaner fuel supply.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does it matter? <\/strong>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/hydrogen-supply\">International Energy Agency<\/a>, hydrogen demand in 2021 was almost entirely met by \u201cunabated fossil fuel-based hydrogen\u201d \u2014 producing CO2 emissions over 900\u202fmega tons \u2014 while low-emission hydrogen production represented less than 1% of global hydrogen production.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And we already know MENA has ambitious hydrogen development plans: <\/strong>In November, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meed.com\/regions-155bn-hydrogen-projects-require-focus\">MEED<\/a> estimated over 50 signed projects in the region would net over USD 150 bn in investments. With the increasing interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/12\/08\/green-hydrogen-and-nwfe-are-key-for-the-private-sector-coming-out-of-cop27-90640\/\">hydrogen production in the region<\/a>, new tech advancement in hydrogen production could help in improving the feasibility of mega projects, especially as most are still in the preliminary stage.
