people.<\/strong> We have a light issue to ease you into the beginning of a new week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Two of the bigger stories this morning come to us from Morocco<\/strong>, where one of the country\u2019s largest silver mines just signed a 20-year agreement to purchase renewable energy, and the EBRD is helping a major packaging company transition to more environmentally-friendly plastics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Elsewhere, a number of oil and gas companies used last week\u2019s Egypt Petroleum Show <\/strong><strong>(EGYPS) to emphasize their green credentials<\/strong>, announcing several new decarbonization initiatives including a potential carbon capture and storage project between Shell Egypt and Energean.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ All that and more in the news well below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ICYMI \u2014 Egypt is getting serious about EVs: <\/strong>The Egyptian cabinet has launched a fund that will offer incentives for greener vehicle production to help develop the domestic production of environmentally friendly cars, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/16\/big-steps-forward-for-our-national-automotive-strategy-97061\/\">EnterpriseAM<\/a> reported. The Environmentally Friendly Car Production Fund is one of three bodies green-lit last Wednesday to help deliver the government\u2019s long-awaited automotive strategy. The other two organizations will also work to facilitate the integration of EVs in Egypt\u2019s automotive sector, cabinet said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION<\/strong>-<\/p>\n<p><strong>US rail operator remains under fire for Ohio crash that caused major toxic chemical spill: <\/strong>Norfolk Southern, the operator of a cargo train that derailed two weeks ago in Ohio\u2019s East Palestine, is drawing criticism for having caused \u201ca major environmental and health crisis.\u201d The crash released a host of hazardous chemicals, causing residents to fear for the safety of their air and water. Eight lawsuits have been filed against Norfolk Southern accusing the company of causing the accident through negligence and of using a cheap, unsafe method to clean up the spill. Some 3.5k fish in nearby streams were killed, and mass evacuations and shelter-in-place orders issued in the aftermath of the accident. It is believed thousands of people have been exposed to long term health risks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also stoking mistrust: <\/strong>Though the EPA \u2014 which is involved in the crash response \u2014 has assured residents that Ohio\u2019s air and water are safe, important information is still lacking about the degree of exposure citizens may have to hazardous chemicals. \u201cWhat's really missing is information about how people come into contact with these chemicals in the air, drinking water or through soil,\u201d Johns Hopkins environmental health professor Keeve Nachman told the BBC. The American automaker intends to surpass rival Ford and close in on Tesla in the EV race, and generate USD 50 bn in revenues from EVs by the middle of the decade. Bank of America forecasts the company to produce 1 mn vehicles by 2025. GM\u2019s advantage comes from previous investments in an Ohio battery plant operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultiumcell.com\/\">Ultium Cells<\/a> \u2014 a USD 2.3 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ultiumcell.com\/newsroom\/News\/2022\/06\/08\/Ultium-Cells-Celebrates-Completion-of-Steel-Building-Structure-in-Tennessee-Exceeds-550000-Construction-Build-Hours#:~:text=Ultium%20Cells%20is%20a%20joint,emissions%2C%20all%2Delectric%20future.\">JV<\/a> between General Motors and LC Energy Solution \u2014 which is increasing battery production by 20% quarterly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GM\u2019s EVs are coming to MENA: <\/strong>In January, General Motors <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7f02310b-456e-4acb-8289-b9c6283517d3\">announced<\/a> that its first-ever electric hybrid Corvette E-Ray would be available in MENA by 4Q 2023, with plans to roll out electric versions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gmauthority.com\/blog\/2022\/12\/2024-chevy-blazer-ev-rs-in-black-live-photo-gallery\/#:~:text=The%202024%20Chevy%20Blazer%20EV,in%20the%20summer%20of%202023.\">Blazer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a41103679\/2024-chevrolet-equinox-ev-revealed\/\">Equinox<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carsdirect.com\/2024\/chevrolet\/silverado-ev#:~:text=Pricing%20%26%20Release%20Date,information%20on%20the%20Silverado%20EV.\">Silverado<\/a> in 2023 as well. GM also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4f27f6be-c996-4676-af37-ec14ec343b61\">has plans<\/a> to launch its first EV in Saudi Arabia in 1H 2023 last year. In December, GM and Al Mansour Automotive <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4de9a06e-5417-4078-9f41-4c9eec8172b7\">announced<\/a> plans to roll out Cadillac\u2019s all-electric mid-size luxury SUV Lyriq, as well as five other Cadillac EVs, in Egypt by the end of 2023. Al Mansour Auto also said it is finalizing feasibility studies to begin assembling the electric vehicles in Egypt.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Electric vehicle maker Tesla is reportedly eyeing a takeover of <\/strong><strong>Canada-based battery metals miner Sigma Lithium<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-17\/tesla-said-to-weigh-bid-for-battery-metals-miner-sigma-lithium#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a>, citing people with knowledge of the matter. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reportedly mulling a bid on Sigma \u2014 one of \u201cmultiple mining options\u201d Tesla is looking at. Sigma\u2019s US-listed shares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/tesla-considering-bid-sigma-lithium-bloomberg-news-2023-02-17\/\">rose 21%<\/a> in extended trading on Friday, following the Bloomberg report \u2014 on which neither Sigma, Musk nor Tesla has officially commented.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s part of a broader push from automakers to secure a supply of core metals needed for <\/strong><strong>EV batteries<\/strong>, Bloomberg notes. GM is said to be competing for part of Brazilian mining company Vale SA\u2019s base metals unit. The agreement will see EEM supply 80 GWh of electricity annually, generated from its renewable energy projects, the company said. No details were provided about the pricing of the PPA or when exactly it would be operational.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>Under the PPA, the processing plants and infrastructure of the Zgounder silver mine \u2014 one of Morocco\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ayagoldsilver.com\/projects\/zgounder\/\">most important silver mines<\/a> \u2014 will be powered primarily by renewable energy, according to the statement. In time, all of the mine\u2019s electricity consumption could be covered by the PPA. EEM currently operates five wind projects with a combined generation capacity of 505 MW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s all kicking off once Zgounder has finished its current expansion:<\/strong> The PPA will come into effect once the Zgounder project has completed its current expansion project, the statement said. Multisac produces woven bags made from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polypropylene\">polypropylene<\/a> and is the leading company in the Moroccan market, manufacturing 220 mn bags a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where\u2019s the money going?<\/strong> Multisac will use the money to introduce more environmentally-friendly types of plastics into its products, the EBRD said. <a href=\"https:\/\/westernpackaging.com\/is-bopp-plastic-recyclable\/#:~:text=BOPP%20plastic%20is%20environmentally%20friendly,while%20still%20maintaining%20its%20value.\">Biaxially oriented polypropylene<\/a> films are easier to recycle and reuse, and have a lower carbon footprint than standard polypropylene. The loan will also help raise the company\u2019s production capacity to 250 mn units a year, and fund the construction of a \u201cgreen manufacturing plant\u201d which will be certified as sustainable based on <a href=\"https:\/\/bregroup.com\/products\/breeam\/\">independent accreditation<\/a>, the statement added, without giving further details.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The EU is backing the loan: <\/strong>The EUR 15 mn loan will be backed by an EU guarantee through the <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/EN\/legal-content\/glossary\/european-fund-for-sustainable-development.html#:~:text=The%20European%20Fund%20for%20Sustainable,neighbourhood%20and%20in%20African%20countries.\">European Fund for Sustainable Development (EFSD)<\/a> \u2014 an EU financial instrument designed to spur public and private investment in sustainable areas, including greentech in industry, green infrastructure, energy efficiency, and logistics. Future iterations of the project could see it expand in scope to capture and store CO2 from other industrial emitters \u2014 like fertilizer companies, it adds. Energean will apply its knowledge and experience of getting a CCS project up and running \u2014 as it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/energean_energean-hires-halliburton-for-carbon-storage-activity-6914508882933354496-ch0m\/?utm_source=linkedin_share&utm_medium=member_desktop_web\">currently doing<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energean.com\/operations\/greece\/prinos-concession\/\">its concession<\/a> in Greece\u2019s Prinos, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Energean has big investment plans for Abu Qir:<\/strong> The company plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/15\/conference-report-energean-to-invest-usd-350-mn-here-this-year-egas-expects-egypt-to-up-production-in-next-two-years-96903\/\">invest USD 350 mn<\/a> in Abu Qir the concession this year, CEO and chairman of Energean International Nicolas Katcharov said at the Egypt Petroleum Show (EGYPS) last week. Katcharov did not elaborate on why the company was directing so much capital into the concession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t the first carbon sequestration project in the region we\u2019ve heard about in the <\/strong><strong>past month: <\/strong>The UAE\u2019s Adnoc <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/05e21464-1763-4620-ac62-73fec9737834\">said last month<\/a> that it would begin to capture and sequester CO2 from Fertiglobe\u2019s UAE operations into carbonate rocks from 2Q 2023. The company <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/13e6008c-9206-4031-bfc2-7ab69bb7771d\">will invest<\/a> USD 15 bn alongside several other companies in the region to develop the tech that is hoped will permanently mineralize CO2 in rock formations in Fujairah.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And even more is planned for carbon capture and utilization (CCU): <\/strong>KSA\u2019s oil giant Aramco and mining company Ma\u2019aden agreed to build sizable CCU facilities last November <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1879dcee-af83-45ca-8d9e-3d2b9133e55f\">at COP27<\/a>, and Omani state-owned energy investment company OQ <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f57c0484-8e0d-4de2-b77e-f40d20c2c861\">signed an agreement<\/a> last month with the Oman India Fertiliser Company (Omifco) to explore including carbon capture tech at its Sur ammonia-urea fertilizer production plant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Egyptian firms signed two agreements that could accelerate decarbonization in <\/strong><strong>the country\u2019s oil and gas sector<\/strong> on the sidelines of EGYPS last week. Hevendrones says the affordability of the green fuel when purchased at scale \u2014 coupled with the possibility of using portable electrolysers to generate hydrogen from moisture in the air and electricity \u2014 will bring down costs and turbocharge the adoption of similar logistics offerings, CEO Bentzion Levinson told the National. Led by scientists at Sandia National Laboratories, the researchers are combining computer modeling with laboratory experiments to study how a certain kind of clay can be used to soak up and store carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> The research uses molecular simulations to explore how water, CO2 and clay interact and how the chemical properties of the tiny cavities in clay \u2014 called nanopores \u2014 can be engineered to capture carbon.
