Let\u2019s roll.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Japanese power generation company Jera has inked an agreement with Taqa to jointly explore the feasibility of decarbonization projects in MENA, while UAE-headquartered Brooge Energy signed an agreement with Siemens Energy to build a green hydrogen facility in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We knew Antarctica\u2019s \u201cDoomsday Glacier\u201d was melting. We\u2019ve just learned that warm<\/strong><strong> water entering its weaker parts is speeding the process up.<\/strong> The climate change-induced melting of Antarctica\u2019s Thwaites Glacier, the so-called Doomsday Glacier, is being accelerated by warmer water seeping into the glacier\u2019s weak spots, according to studies published yesterday in the journal Nature. Research started in 2019 saw US and British scientists send an underwater robot down a 600-meter hole made in Thwaites, allowing them to study the glacier from previously inaccessible places. They used sensors to collect data from key areas \u2014 including where the glacier\u2019s ice meets the ocean \u2014 ultimately discovering that warmer water was flowing into the structure\u2019s crevasses and exacerbating the instability caused by already-warming temperatures.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What could this mean? Irreversible collapse and huge sea level rise:<\/strong> The total collapse of Thwaites \u2014 which spans an area roughly the size of Florida \u2014 could cause a sea level rise of half a meter, which would have devastating consequences for the world\u2019s coastal areas and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/08\/nasa-30-year-sea-level-rise\">potentially cause<\/a> mass migration. But because Thwaites is essentially a stabilizing force for nearby glaciers, its collapse could also trigger a further three meter rise in global sea levels, the research found.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is attracting widespread coverage:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/feb\/15\/antarctic-sea-ice-hits-record-low-climate-crisis\">Guardian<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/15\/climate\/thwaites-antarctica-melting-robot.html\">New York Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/science\/environment\/scientists-take-peek-antarcticas-doomsday-glacier-rcna70064\">NBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/15\/world\/thwaites-doomsday-glacier-sea-level-climate-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/skinny-robot-documents-forces-eroding-doomsday-glacier\/2023\/02\/15\/45d8dcf8-ad4c-11ed-b0ba-9f4244c6e5da_story.html\">AP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-64640796\">BBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/warm-water-melts-weak-spots-antarcticas-doomsday-glacier-say-scientists-2023-02-15\/\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>IN COP LAND- COP28 needs to deliver on action, USD and an inclusive energy <\/strong><strong>transition, say key stakeholders: <\/strong>COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber plans to \u201clay out a roadmap for COP28 that is inclusive, results-oriented and far from business as usual,\u201d he said at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldgovernmentsummit.org\/\">World Government Summit (WGS)<\/a>, which ran from Monday-Wednesday in Dubai, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/emirates-government-climate-cop28-idAFL1N34U0OJ\">Reuters<\/a> reported. Al Jaber called for \u201ca major course correction\u201d to slash emissions and keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\">Paris Agreement<\/a> goal of limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5\u00b0C within sight. \u201cKeeping 1.5 alive is a top priority and it will cut across everything I do,\u201d Al Jaber separately told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/uaes-jaber-says-keeping-15-celsius-goal-alive-is-top-priority-cop28-2023-02-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> in an interview.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As expected, climate finance is on everyone\u2019s mind:<\/strong> COP28 should offer the chance \u201cto zero in on what has been an elusive target,\u201d noted IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/02\/14\/uae-hosting-cop28-is-chance-to-zero-in-on-climate-action-imf-chief-says\/\">the National<\/a> on the sidelines of the WGS. This includes the need to provide climate finance to emerging markets and developing countries, she added. Capital is essential to make the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b485ea89-be82-498c-a46a-47e7ddcae91e\">loss and damage fund<\/a> \u2014 agreed upon at COP27 \u2014 \u201creal and operational,\u201d noted Al Jaber. Though the agreement to establish the fund was a big W, many details still need to be ironed out before it gets off the ground, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b3599423-c563-41aa-945b-10de45f07194\">we noted<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The role of DFIs remains under the microscope: <\/strong>Among COP28\u2019s key aims is determining how to raise funds to address the region\u2019s climate change-induced challenges \u2014 including desertification, coastal erosion, and air pollution, World Bank Vice President for MENA Ferid Belhaj <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303129165\">told Wam<\/a> on the sidelines of WGS. But \u201creal reform\u201d of multilateral banks and international financial institutions is needed to spur concessional financing, reduce risk, and draw more funds from the private sector, said Al Jaber. This echoes <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b485ea89-be82-498c-a46a-47e7ddcae91e\">key messages<\/a> from COP27, but could also reignite <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52eb3b81-d948-4c33-8553-efa5a4db8a39\">last year\u2019s debate<\/a> around DFI reform that centered particularly on the World Bank.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- The European Parliament has approved a law to ban the <\/strong><strong>sale of carbon-emitting petrol and diesel vehicles by 2035<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20230214-eu-gives-final-approval-to-2035-ban-on-new-fossil-fuel-car-sales\">France 24<\/a> reports. The law \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dd5f8ad6-48c3-43f9-9f3b-16ec8951b987\">passed in October<\/a> \u2014 will allow carmakers to adapt their plants to EV production during the interval before it is enforced. EVs make up only 12% of new cars being sold in Europe, the outlet reports. 48% y-o-y decline in adjusted net income attributable to shareholders in 4Q 2022 to USD 172 mn, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2023\/2\/719.pdf\">the company's earnings release (pdf)<\/a>. 4Q 2022 revenue also dipped 11% y-o-y to USD 1.1 bn, off the back of lower urea prices, along with plant turnarounds \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/fertilizer.services\/fertilizer-plant-turnaround\/\">scheduled stoppage<\/a> of some or all of their operations \u2014 in the UAE and Egypt, according to the earnings. On a full-year basis, Fertiglobe\u2019s 2022 adjusted net income rose 75% y-o-y to USD 1.29 bn, up from USD 703 mn in 2021. The company saw a 52% y-o-y increase in revenue to USD 5 bn in 2022, up from USD 3.3 bn in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No more turnarounds for UAE, Egypt facilities in 2023:<\/strong> The 4Q plant turnarounds in the UAE and Egypt were among several turnarounds completed by Fertiglobe in 2022 \u2014 but no turnarounds are planned at those facilities in 2023, Fertiglobe CEO Ahmed El Hoshy said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s in the pipeline: <\/strong>The company is \u201ccurrently evaluating the engineering and technology choices\u201d for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oci.nl\/news\/2021-oci-nv-14\/\">100 MW electrolyzer plant<\/a> it\u2019s developing in Egypt with Scatec and Orascom Construction, \u201cwhich will leverage our existing ammonia production and global distribution infrastructure,\u201d El Hoshy said. This follows Fertiglobe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ecc04454-202c-4594-a155-94ea31ed01bc\">recent commissioning<\/a> of phase one of the USD 135 mn green hydrogen plant, which will produce up to 15k tons of green hydrogen a year as feedstock for some 90k tons of green ammonia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blue ammonia production is on the way: <\/strong>Fertiglobe has \u201cmade progress\u201d with a blue ammonia project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adnoc.ae\/en\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2021\/mitsui-and-gs-energy-to-join-taziz-in-world-scale-low-carbon-blue-ammonia-project\">unveiled in late-2021<\/a> that will see it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oci.nl\/news\/2021-oci-nv-7\/\">partner with<\/a> Ta\u2019ziz \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adnoc.ae\/en\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2020\/adnoc-and-adq-launch-taziz-joint-venture--to-drive-growth-in-uae-chemicals-sector\">joint venture<\/a> between Adnoc and ADQ \u2014 GS Energy and Mitsui to construct a facility to produce some 1 mn tons of blue ammonia a year, the earnings noted. The Shareholders\u2019 Agreement for the project was signed in January and the EPC contract has been signed as well, with the project set to be financed by a mix of debt and equity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Looking ahead, current low nitrogen prices will be offset by tight supply and anticipated <\/strong><strong>high demand. <\/strong>Fertiglobe has \u201ca good order book\u201d going into 1Q 2023, El Hoshy said. Though global nitrogen pricing has been \u201cweaker\u201d in recent months, this has made nitrogen fertilizers more affordable for end-users, he added. Nitrogen demand is expected to recover to support the replenishing of low global grain stocks, while supply is likely to remain tight from 2023-2027. All of this is helping to keep the market healthy in the medium-long term, El Hoshy added. El Hoshy expects to see an uptick in demand for Fertiglobe\u2019s industrial business, \u201csupportive of ammonia primarily\u201d \u2014 spurred by recovery in China, lower energy prices, and an improved global growth outlook.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>UAE\u2019s Tabreed sees an uptick in 2022 net income and revenue:<\/strong> Abu Dhabi-headquartered National Central Cooling Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabreed.ae\/\">Tabreed<\/a>) saw its net income attributable to shareholders rise 3% y-o-y in 2022 to AED 600.2 mn (USD 163 mn), according to the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tabreed.ae\/news\/tabreeds-full-2022-financial-results-show-19-increase-ebitda-aed-1-23-billion\/\">earnings release<\/a>. Tabreed\u2019s revenue increased 13% y-o-y in 2022 to AED 2.22 bn (USD 600 mn).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tabreed increased its total connection capacity to over 1.2 mn <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawinsider.com\/dictionary\/refrigeration-tons\">refrigeration tons (RT)<\/a><\/strong><strong> in <\/strong><strong>2022<\/strong>, adding some 34k RT of new connections in the UAE, some 19k RT in Oman and 500 RT in Bahrain throughout the year, according to the earnings release.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022 saw it expand its MENA market: <\/strong>Tabreed acquired a seventh district cooling plant in Oman in January, nearly doubling its concession capacity in the country. VAIS \u2014 a deep-tech app currently under development \u2014 will collect and use satellite imagery to alert smallholder farmers to everything from insect infestations to diseases, or the impact of inclement weather on plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UAE platform The Surpluss<\/strong><strong> also aims to maximize resource use:<\/strong> The Surpluss \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adsmehub.ae\/en\/explore\/post-details\/the-surpluss-startup\">recently<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adsmehub.ae\/en\/explore\/post-details\/the-surpluss-startup\">developed<\/a> and launched in the UAE \u2014 aims to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainabilitymenews.com\/environmental-social\/climate-tech-platform-the-surpluss-revolutionising-resource-sharing\">divert waste from landfills<\/a> and help companies become more climate-aware by providing a space for manufacturers, service providers, and other businesses to share surplus materials, production waste, and knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Globally, analytics platforms can use data to tell a big-picture story: <\/strong>ClimateOS, an integrated platform designed to show cities the full impact of their emission reduction activities, is helping to connect emissions, climate activity and economics at a broad level, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2023\/feb\/08\/they-get-the-big-picture-the-swedish-tech-startup-helping-cities-go-green\">The Guardian<\/a> reports. The platform helps decision-makers understand which activities are the biggest drivers of emissions and plot out the cost and impact of the different actions they could take to reduce them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How exactly does it work?<\/strong> The platform displays a range of activities that fall under different \u201cbuilding blocks\u201d: Transport, industry, agriculture, energy, and others. It uses data-crunching and analytics to quantify the impact of shifting to a lower-emission alternative, while continuing to fulfill the underlying purpose of each activity. This could include transport fleets running on low-emissions fuel, large-scale substitution of energy-efficient equipment in industrial or agricultural operations, or a higher proportion of commuters walking or cycling to work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It shows how climate action makes financial sense:<\/strong> ClimateOS quantifies the costs and potential benefits of particular climate actions, so cities can demonstrate to private investors and public funding bodies where climate investment could have a long-term financial payoff, The Guardian notes. It allows governments and businesses to assess the trade-off, for example, between the capital cost of investing in sustainable heating or cooling systems versus the costs saved by the improved health of residents or the reduced maintenance of inefficient equipment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The platform\u2019s user base is rapidly growing \u2014 especially in Europe: <\/strong>ClimateOS is currently used by over 50 cities in eight countries, according to The Guardian. Over 40 of these are in Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.climateview.global\/cities#canada\">ClimateView<\/a> shows.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could it have a role to play in MENA?<\/strong> The platform doesn\u2019t yet have users in MENA, but its potential role in helping the region slash its soaring emissions is clear. Globally, cities account for over 70% of CO2 emissions, according to a 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.worldbank.org\/sustainablecities\/cutting-global-carbon-emissions-where-do-cities-stand#:~:text=Cities%20account%20for%20over%2070,constructed%20with%20carbon%2Dintensive%20materials.\">World Bank<\/a> report. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/events\/2021\/09\/22\/mena-cities-at-the-forefront-of-climate-action-the-time-is-now\">as of 2021<\/a>, some 65% of MENA\u2019s total population lived in urban areas \u2014 well up from the global average of 55%. While MENA\u2019s overall greenhouse gas footprint is comparatively low, it\u2019s growing rapidly, with emissions set to more than triple by 2060 under a \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d scenario. The region is also home to some of the world\u2019s highest <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/per-capita-co2\">per capita emitters<\/a>: Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain and KSA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>World Bank recommendations would suggest so:<\/strong> \u201cThe climate battle for the planet will be won or lost in cities,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/events\/2021\/09\/22\/mena-cities-at-the-forefront-of-climate-action-the-time-is-now\">World Bank<\/a> notes.
