all out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>It\u2019s been a busy week for Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund, having completed both a USD 5.5 bn green bond issuance and a 30% acquisition stake of Saudi Tabreed. <strong>We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biden and Brazil\u2019s Lula <\/strong><strong>talk climate<\/strong><strong> action <\/strong><strong>in DC meeting<\/strong><strong> after four years of \u201cself<\/strong><strong> marginalization\u201d: <\/strong>Climate cooperation was high on the agenda in a meeting between US President Joe Biden and <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/lula-winner-brazils-presidential-election\/story?id=92443979\">newly-elected<\/a> Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Washington DC on Friday. The US administration pledged to work with Congress to provide \u201cinitial support\u201d to protect the Amazon rainforest, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/02\/10\/joint-statement-following-the-meeting-between-president-biden-and-president-lula\/\">a joint statement<\/a> released after the meeting. This could see the US donate an initial USD 50 mn to Brazil\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazonfund.gov.br\/en\/home\/\">Amazon Fund<\/a>, which aims to fight deforestation and support sustainable development projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lula continues to position himself as the climate champion to Bolsonaro\u2019s climate villain: <\/strong>The Amazon Fund, set up in 2009, has been rebooted by Lula \u2014 with the support of Norway and Germany \u2014 after being frozen by former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro in 2019. Deforestation hit a 15-year high under Bolsonaro, who eased environmental protection to spur mining and logging in the Amazon \u2014 which he said would boost economic development. Lula\u2019s administration has recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/feb\/08\/brazil-illegal-mining-indigenous-lula\">begun a crackdown<\/a> against illegal gold mining in the rainforest. Heads of state \u2014 including Egypt\u2019s Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Turkey\u2019s Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan \u2014 join policymakers and tech tycoons like Musk to discuss pathways to reshaping governments to adapt to climate change, growing population levels, and the rise of AI in the workplace. Musk is set to discuss global trends with the UAE\u2019s Cabinet Affairs Minister Mohammed Al Gergawi during the summit \u2014 which will run through to this Wednesday, 15 February.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Institutional investors support lawsuit accusing Shell of <\/strong><strong>climate risk mismanagement: <\/strong>A group of institutional investors with a collective USD 543 bn assets under management is giving its support to a first-of-its-kind London lawsuit against oil giant Shell\u2019s board over mismanagement of climate-related risks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/institutional-investors-back-shell-board-lawsuit-over-climate-risk-2023-02-09\/\">Reuters<\/a> reported. The lawsuit \u2014 brought by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\/\">ClientEarth<\/a>, an environmental law charity and activist Shell investor \u2014 accuses the energy behemoth\u2019s directors of breaking company law by failing to manage the \u201cmaterial and foreseeable\u201d risks posed by climate change. Shell has rejected the allegations, Reuters notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who supports the lawsuit?<\/strong> Institutional investors who collectively own some 12 mn of Shell\u2019s 7 bn shares \u2014 including British pension funds London CIV and nest, Swedish pension fund AP3, French asset manager Sanso IS, Belgium\u2019s Degroof Petercam Asset Management, and Denmark\u2019s Denmark's Danske Bank Asset Management and Danica Pension and AP Pension \u2014 are all said to have written in support of the lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Tesla CEO Elon Musk will reveal part 3 of the EV <\/strong><strong>company\u2019s \u201cMaster Plan\u201d during its first investor day on 1 March<\/strong>, Musk said in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1623152067547394050?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1623152067547394050%7Ctwgr%5E1b95ae8184beda7701ab32750e437aaef0f8f4bb%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.reuters.com%2Ftechnology%2Felon-musk-unveil-teslas-master-plan-3-first-investor-day-2023-02-08%2F\">a tweet<\/a>. Tesla is expected to unveil information on plans to produce a vehicle of about half the cost of what\u2019s currently on offer, as well as long-term expansion plans and capital allocation at the investor day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3 - An anticipated bleak outcome for the UN\u2019s first Global <\/strong><strong>Stocktake (GST) could force investors to ramp up decarbonization efforts<\/strong>, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/esg-watch-how-global-stocktake-will-force-investors-pull-up-their-socks-climate-2023-02-09\/\">reported<\/a>. The GST \u2014 due to be released before COP28 kicks off in late November \u2014 was set up as a five-year yearly review of progress under the Paris agreement, and most analysts predict it will report that global efforts are far from what is required to stay within the 1.5\u00b0C target. COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber appeared to echo these predictions last month in a sustainability conference saying \u201cwe don\u2019t need to wait for the stocktake to know what it will say. We are way off-track,\u201d the newswire adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #4 -<\/strong> <strong>Morocco is among several African countries in talks with <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fsdafrica.org\/\">FSD Africa<\/a><\/strong><strong> for transactional guidance on a potential green bond issuance, <\/strong>Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-10\/fsd-africa-targets-to-back-400-million-of-green-bonds-this-year?sref=y3YMCJ4e#xj4y7vzkg\">reported<\/a>. The development agency \u2014 backed by the UK\u2019s Foreign Office \u2014 will help African countries raise at least USD 400 mn for climate-related projects this year with some expected to be issued by 2Q 2023, the business information service quotes FSD Africa Capital Markets Director Evans Osano as saying.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) 1Q 2023 clean energy <\/strong><strong>certificates auction is open <\/strong>and will close tomorrow, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewec.ae\/en\/media\/press-release\/ewec-conduct-its-q1-2023-clean-energy-certificates-auction\">statement<\/a>. The exclusive vendor of nuclear and solar-produced electricity in the UAE is selling digital certificates to certify the source of renewable energy usage and allow companies to back up ESG goals. El Sisi also met with the head of Greek infrastructure investor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.copelouzos.gr\/en\/\">Copelouzos Group<\/a> \u2014 which is leading the project \u2014 in Egypt on Saturday, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/posts\/pfbid0nXN1kDFPD5xvZfCgwBT3hWzzoGFpyuP3cTwX4xyQP8RznwbPsKGR27xAouRh3sqBl?_rdc=1&_rdr\">an Egyptian presidency statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong> Announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/01\/the-war-in-ukraine-is-accelerating-plans-to-link-our-electricity-grid-to-greece-72429\/\">in June<\/a> last year, the planned EUR 3.5 bn interconnector will run almost 1.5k km from Egypt\u2019s Wadi El Natroun directly across the Mediterranean to mainland Greece, transmitting only renewable energy generated in Egypt. Work on the project accelerated last year as the EU upped its search for new energy sources amid a European energy crisis spurred by the Russia-Ukraine war. The consortium working on GREGY is close to finalizing technical and financial surveys ahead of a financial investment decision on the project, a senior figure at Copelouzos <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/02\/09\/copelouzos-co-close-to-finalizing-studies-for-greece-egypt-electricity-link-96071\/\">said last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grid interconnection with MENA is all the rage:<\/strong> Egypt signed a cooperation framework with Greece and Cyprus for the USD 4 bn, 2 GW <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/23\/egypt-signs-framework-agreement-with-cyprus-greece-power-linkage\/\">EuroAfrica Interconnector<\/a> in 2019. And Morocco has for some time been exporting electricity generated from solar and wind energy to Spain and Portugal through two electricity interconnection projects with a combined generation capacity of 1.4 GW. On the sustainability front, Sand to Green says it will use solar-powered desalination units to source its irrigation needs, will use drip irrigation techniques to minimize water wastage, and will collect field and satellite data on a daily basis to manage their plantations, according to the company\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not the only MENA-based startup Catalyst is backing:<\/strong> Catalyst Fund said it would invest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bc8955d4-3411-419c-81de-9773e386f8bd\">USD 2 mn in 10 African startups<\/a> focused on climate resilience last month. Each of the startups will receive USD 100k in equity financing and another USD 100k for venture building assistance.
