Oman is also stepping up its green hydrogen game, with the country signing a handful of agreements with Saudi to partner on green hydrogen and renewables projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We have these stories and more in the news well below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Mexico is capitalizing on its<\/strong><strong> advantages over the US to become an EV manufacturing hub<\/strong>, with some of the world\u2019s biggest carmakers reportedly eyeing EV production in the country. BMW announced it\u2019s investing EUR 800 mn to ready an existing car plant in Mexico for EV production and construct a battery assembly center there, while Tesla is reportedly looking at setting up a Mexican plant as well. Audi, General Motors, and Fiat Chrysler are also said to have expressed interest. Amid <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/946269ad-dc22-49e2-905e-23d72d4bbf92\">heated debates<\/a> between the US and EU over the impact of President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>\u2019s subsidies to support EV manufacture in the US, Mexico has notable advantages \u2014 including existing infrastructure and expertise, several stakeholders have noted recently. Crucially, there\u2019s a much lower fiscal burden for the export sector compared to the US, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is attracting coverage in the international press:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/mexico-talks-with-top-carmakers-make-electric-vehicles-foreign-minister-says-2023-02-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/10c8c436-416b-4fb6-b1a1-c7456780053c\">Financial Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/carmaker-bmw-invest-around-870-mln-mexico-ev-push-2023-02-03\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/30\/ford-mustang-mach-e-price-cut.html\">CNBC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-02-03\/bmw-to-invest-800-million-to-build-electric-vehicles-in-mexico\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/podcasts\/2023\/02\/01\/it-was-remarkable-that-someone-so-small-could-rock-a-company-of-such-importance-adani-and-india-inc\">Economist (listen, runtime: 24:00)<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Renewables\u2019 share of most Middle Eastern countries\u2019 energy<\/strong><strong> mix will double<\/strong><strong> or triple by the end of the decade<\/strong>, Saudi Association of Energy Economics (SAEE) Chairman Majeed Al Moneef told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2244951\/business-economy\">Arab News<\/a>. <strong>The catch?<\/strong> Investing in renewable energy will happen alongside investments in oil and gas, Al Moneef said, noting that the Middle East will be at \u201cthe forefront of both\u201d sectors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>MENA oil and gas giants \u2014 including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f3060f39-7278-4011-a16f-dd881bbc69f8\">have been under fire<\/a> as of late for their continued investments in the heavy-emissions industries. The UAE was most recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1e3ed2fa-cf96-4d35-9f17-7d894f507e0b\">put under the microscope<\/a> for its high per capita emissions as it gears up to host the COP28 summit this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- South Korea\u2019s Kepco wants to construct four nuclear reactors<\/strong><strong> with a combined capacity of 1.4 GW worth USD 32.5 bn for Turkey<\/strong>, South Korean news agency <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20230131004200320\">Yonhap<\/a> reported last week. Kepco submitted a proposal for the reactors following talks with Turkey in December, as Ankara <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enerdata.net\/publications\/daily-energy-news\/koreas-kepco-submits-proposal-build-four-nuclear-reactors-turkey.html\">plans<\/a> to expand its national nuclear capacity to 7.2 GW by 2035. The location and timeline of the project have yet to be revealed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KEPCO also has a presence in the GCC: <\/strong>The company is among five South Korean firms that signed a USD 6.5 bn agreement with Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) in November to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/21ce193c-0194-41cf-b695-c6667585bcb6\">hydrogen and ammonia plant<\/a>. The firm was also awarded the contract to build the UAE\u2019s Barakah nuclear power plant \u2014 which recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3e4029ae-a517-4bea-a5a2-7afdd1a6a5eb\">approved its operational blueprint for 2023-2026<\/a> \u2014 back <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3e4029ae-a517-4bea-a5a2-7afdd1a6a5eb\">in 2009<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Masdar is looking to ramp up investments in Africa with new<\/strong><strong> renewables projects in Nigeria<\/strong>, as part of its plans to develop a combined 20 GW of renewables capacity in Africa by 2035, <a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/business-services\/masdar-eyes-nigeria-in-20000mw-renewable-energy-plan-for-africa\/\">The Guardian Nigeria<\/a> reported last week. The UAE renewables giant previously signed three contracts as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mofaic.gov.ae\/en\/mediahub\/news\/2022\/1\/17\/17-01-2022-uae-projects\">Etihad 7<\/a> \u2014 an initiative aiming to attract public and private funding to invest in Africa\u2019s renewable energy sector over the next 12 years. Last month, Masdar signed <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ae5c70f9-e2dd-4262-986f-0d4bce65f3ce\">agreements with Ethiopia and Zambia<\/a> with a total capacity of 2 GW per country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- Hasta la vista, Boeing 747: <\/strong>Boeing delivered its final 747 jumbo jet last week and has committed to leading with sustainability, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/boeing.mediaroom.com\/2023-01-31-Boeing,-Atlas-Air-Celebrate-Delivery-of-Final-747,-an-Airplane-that-Transformed-Aviation-and-Global-Air-Travel\">statement<\/a>. Increasing awareness about the industry\u2019s polluting effects over the last few years has prompted airlines and airplane manufacturers to look for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-delivering-the-last-747-018b4b60e8d8a40aa5bf039c47d81a9a\">more fuel-efficient aircrafts<\/a> and the covid pandemic further put pressure on the company to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-iag-idUSKCN24I04J\">decommission<\/a> the four-engine aircraft and seek more lucrative models.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA #1- Egypt-based startups working on clean energy, agritech, or resource efficiency<\/strong><strong> can now apply to startup accelerator <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/changelabsme.org\/\">ChangeLabs<\/a><\/strong><strong>\u2019 <\/strong><strong>Scale up to Green acceleration program.<\/strong> ChangeLabs is partnering on the program with the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), Netherlands-based NPO <a href=\"https:\/\/hivos.org\/\">Hivos<\/a>, and Amazon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/activate\/\">AWS Activate<\/a>, it said in a post on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/changelabseg_greenenergy-resourceefficiency-agritech-activity-7026837509372289024-lKU4\/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop\">LinkedIn<\/a>. Startups at a post-revenue stage can apply for the three-month mentorship program <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/form.typeform.com\/to\/I7vvyGfN?typeform-source=www.linkedin.com\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA #2- Morocco launches call for projects to enhance the sustainability of industrial<\/strong><strong> zones: <\/strong>Morocco\u2019s Industry and Trade Ministry and the Millennium Challenge Account-Morocco Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcamorocco.ma\/en\/mission\">MCA-Morocco<\/a>) launched a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fonzid.ma\/appel-a-projet\">call for projects<\/a> designed to boost the sustainability of industrial zones, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maroc.ma\/en\/news\/sustainable-industrial-zones-fund-launch-2nd-edition-call-projects\">government statement<\/a>. MCA-Morocco is an institution implementing a US-Morocco cooperation program aiming to improve land productivity by rehabilitating industrial zones to improve their \u201cenvironmental and social performance.\u201d Selected projects will receive funding from the MAD 150 mn (USD 14.6 mn) Fonzid II fund, set up as part of the MCA-Morocco program. The NGHC plant is set to produce 1.2 mn tons of green ammonia annually, promising to be the world\u2019s largest utility-scale green hydrogen facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Next stop: Financial close?<\/strong> The USD 5 bn green hydrogen project was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/667db3a4-e073-4568-bb2e-5ea77b26e032\">expected<\/a> to reach financial close in early 2023, but we have yet to see confirmation that it has reached this milestone. NGHC signed facility agreements with Saudi and international banks in December to secure operating capital, and we\u2019re also expecting to see \u201csignificant participation\u201d from the government.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A recap on the Neom green hydrogen plant: <\/strong>The plant will be powered by renewable energy projects totaling nearly 4 GW and is expected to begin hydrogen production in 2026. All of the green ammonia produced will be exported to global markets through a long-term offtake agreement with Air Products, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The technical partners:<\/strong> Air Products will construct the plant and supply its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/air-separation#:~:text=Cryogenic%20air%20separation%20technology%20is,consuming%20high%20volumes%20of%20electricity.\">air separation<\/a> technology used in green ammonia production, while the 2.2 GW electrolysis technology used to produce the green hydrogen will be supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/thyssenkrupp-nucera.com\/\">Thyssenkrupp Nucera<\/a>, according to the statement. Denmark\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topsoe.com\/\">Topsoe<\/a> will provide the technology to produce green ammonia, while Houston-headquartered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerhughes.com\/\">Baker Hughes<\/a> will be responsible for hydrogen compression.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tadawul-listed Acwa Power intends to \u201creplicate\u201d the project elsewhere<\/strong>, to supply the \u201chuge capacities\u201d of green ammonia likely to be in demand, the company\u2019s global head of hydrogen Andrea Lovato recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2023\/02\/01\/acwa-power-plans-to-replicate-5bn-neom-green-hydrogen-project-abroad\/\">the National<\/a>. The \u201creplicated\u201d project will also produce 1.2 mn tons of green ammonia annually, Lovato said. The two sides signed the agreement during meetings of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the Green Energy Advisory Council held in Baku on Friday. The planned location, investment size, and time frame were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The planned scope of the partnership: <\/strong>Acwa Power and Azerbaijan are planning to build wind farms with a combined capacity of 2.5 GW and develop the country\u2019s first battery storage systems, Azerbaijan\u2019s Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov is quoted as saying. Again, no investment size or time frame are disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This partnership appears to be separate from the 240 MW wind farm we already knew<\/strong><strong> about<\/strong><strong>: <\/strong>In mid-January, Acwa Power broke ground on its USD 300 mn, <a href=\"https:\/\/acwapower.com\/en\/projects\/azerbaijan-wind-ipp\/\">240 MW Absheron-Khizi wind farm<\/a>, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/business\/saudi-acwa-power-starts-works-on-300mln-azerbaijan-wind-project-cah6are4\">to Zawya<\/a>. Up to USD 105 mn of the price tag is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/work-with-us\/projects\/psd\/52735.html\">being provided<\/a> by the EBRD as debt financing, with \u201ca number of other financial institutions\u201d also expected to contribute. The company signed the investment, power purchase, and transmission connection agreements in December 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acwapower.com\/news\/hrh-saudi-minister-of-energy-the-president-of-azerbaijan-and-acwa-power-break-ground-on-sar-11-billion-wind-project-the-first-and-largest-foreign-investment-in-azerbaijans-renewable-power-sector\/\">Acwa Power notes<\/a>. The extra 1.5 GW being added through the newly-announced offshore project seems to be in addition to this 240 MW \u2014 though no stakeholder has confirmed this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KSA had been eyeing closer collaboration with Azerbaijan: <\/strong>Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al Falih <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bcada048-d5e9-432e-b169-0a6078e8e4cb\">noted in December<\/a> that the kingdom was interested in implementing \u201clarger energy projects\u201d than the 240 MW project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And hoping to hop on board the green electricity export train: <\/strong>Saudi also hoped to participate in the export of green electricity from Azerbaijan to Europe, Al Falih also said.
