(ICYMI, you can catch up on our coverage <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/922f15f5-a014-4c29-807b-501f1bff9be5\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b39b2e06-4352-43e9-9f1c-dce7fe2215b0\">here<\/a>.) The downside? Indian mogul Gautam Adani \u2014 previously the third richest man in the world \u2014 has dropped eight places on the Bloomberg b\u2019naires index as the value of his conglomerate Adani Group sank by USD 70 bn in the wake of chaos triggered by a damning report from short seller investment firm Hindenburg Research. <strong>The story is getting widespread coverage in the international press: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-31\/adani-s-2-5-billion-share-offering-faces-critical-final-day\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d6435e29-1da7-4d83-a3cc-ed26e32e46db\">The Financial Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/31\/business\/adani-group-share-offering.html\">New York Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/deals\/indias-adani-enterprises-enters-final-day-crucial-25-bln-share-sale-2023-01-31\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/jan\/31\/major-investment-in-adani-group-fails-to-stop-us70bn-slide-in-value-following-allegations\">Guardian<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/31\/adanis-battle-with-hindenburg-leaves-investors-sizing-up-its-exposure.html\">CNBC<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz Al Saud says the <\/strong><strong>kingdom will invest USD 266 bn in \u201ccleaner\u201d energy<\/strong> and distribution infrastructure to export green hydrogen worldwide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alarabiya.net\/aswaq\/oil-and-gas\/2023\/01\/30\/%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AB%D9%85%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%84-%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%AF-%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%A9-%D8%A3%D9%86%D8%B8%D9%81\">Al Arabiya<\/a> reports. The investment will also go towards creating industrial centers for green steel and aluminum, fertilizers, and other products needed for green hydrogen production, Al Saud added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KSA isn\u2019t budging on gas production\u2026 but wants to lower emissions: <\/strong>Saudi intends to ramp up <a href=\"https:\/\/saudigazette.com.sa\/article\/629373\/SAUDI-ARABIA\/Saudi-Arabia-will-not-build-any-future-power-generation-without-carbon-capture\">gas production by 60%<\/a> and work is underway to extend gas lines by 4k km \u2014 but all new energy projects will be developed with carbon capture facilities, Al Saud says. No further details were disclosed on timelines or carbon emissions targets on new projects.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Renewables outpaced fossil gas in terms of power generation in the EU for the first <\/strong><strong>time last year<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/app\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Report-European-Electricity-Review-2023.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> by energy think tank group <a href=\"https:\/\/ember-climate.org\/\">Ember<\/a>. Renewable energy accounted for 22% of the EU\u2019s energy mix, compared to 20% for gas. The rise of solar power generation helped save approximately EUR 10 bn in gas expenditures, with Germany being the biggest contributor with 59 TWh followed by Spain at 33 TWh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reliance on fossil fuels could drop significantly this year: <\/strong>While EU fossil fuel generation rose 3% y-o-y in 2022, it is predicted to fall by 20% in 2023, according to the report. Solar and wind power plant development will expand on the continent, nuclear plants are coming back online, and hydropower generation will be replenished after droughts, the report expects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The reason? A record amount of renewable power installations:<\/strong> Renewables installations added 41 GW worth of power generation capacity in 2022 \u2014 47% more than in 2021 \u2014 as 20 nations reached their highest solar energy share to date, the report finds. on-lending to the private sector from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Union (EU) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF)\u2019s Green Economy Financing Facility program (<a href=\"https:\/\/ebrdgeff.com\/\">GEFF<\/a>), according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/news\/2023\/ebrd-eu-and-gcf-support-egypts-transition-to-a-greener-and-more-inclusive-economy.html\">an EBRD statement<\/a> issued yesterday. EBRD and its partners formally launched phase two of the GEFF program (GEFF II) at an event in Cairo yesterday, which Enterprise Climate attended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> GEFF II will provide funds to Egyptian financial institutions for on-lending to private sector companies focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation \u2014 with a particular focus on encouraging SMEs to invest in green tech promoting efficiency in water and resource use, sustainable land management, and the circular economy. GEFF II combines financing and technical assistance from the EBRD, financial incentives from the EU and concessional co-financing from the GCF. The first phase of GEFF <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/whats-green-economy-financing-facility-geff-work\/\">raised EUR 140 mn<\/a> for on-lending in 2017, followed by a EUR 150 mn extension in November 2020.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Private sector engagement and scaling green activity:<\/strong> \u201cThe role played by development partners in pushing private sector engagement is important,\u201d Egypt\u2019s International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat said in an opening speech. The EBRD has helped boost private sector investment in and financing for Egypt by leading the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/13\/us-europe-pledge-more-than-usd-550-mn-to-fund-egypts-energy-transition-86885\/\">energy pillar<\/a> of Egypt\u2019s Nexus on Water, Food and Energy (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sis.gov.eg\/Story\/169930\/Egypt-aspires-to-present-success-story-in-COP27?lang=en-us\">NWFE<\/a>) initiative \u2014 which is expected to help bring USD bns of private sector inflows to Egypt\u2019s renewables sector, Al Mashat noted. By supporting the uptake of new tech and practices, GEFF can help scale green activity in the Egyptian market, enhance economic competitiveness, and create a platform for policy dialogue in the energy sector, the EU\u2019s Ambassador to Egypt Christian Berger said in an introductory speech.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Egypt\u2019s SMEs are hungry for more green finance:<\/strong> SMEs \u201cperfectly understand\u201d the market shift towards greenifying operations, the increased consumer demand for environmental action from businesses, and the growing demand for green finance, said Karim Kamal, head of Support Functions & Sustainability Division at National Bank of Kuwait (NBK) \u2014 one of several partner banks to offer on-lending through GEFF. While large corporates were NBK\u2019s primary GEFF loan-seeking clients in the program\u2019s first phase, GEFF II \u201cis very focused on SMEs\u201d and there\u2019s a lot of demand, Kamal added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GEFF isn\u2019t just about financing \u2014 it also offers important technical support: <\/strong>Much of the value provided by the GEFF program comes from the technical assistance provided by the EBRD, banking sector representatives noted. This includes helping SMEs understand the importance of green investment and identify climate-friendly tech to invest in. \u201cAn integral part of these programs is to convince and educate. The technical assistance is the most valuable thing,\u201d said Tarek Fayed, assistant CEO of QNB Al Ahli \u2014 another partner bank.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For banks, this helps to de-risk on-lending to SMEs: <\/strong>Banks take the same credit risk with SMEs as they do issuing any loans, but SMEs are particularly vulnerable because of their size, noted Fayed. \u201cWhen an economic crisis hits, they are first \u2014 and possibly most \u2014 affected,\u201d he added. SMEs are often perceived as risky by both banks and customers, but there are ways to boost their resilience and enhance their contribution to the economy, noted partner bank Ahli United Bank\u2019s Senior Deputy CEO Mohamed Assem. These include expanding SMEs\u2019 access to finance \u2014 especially green finance \u2014 while helping them put governance and risk management structures in place, and building technical and management capacity, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there a wider role for DFIs? <\/strong>DFIs could contribute to building the pipeline of SMEs for on-lending, as banks still struggle to find bankable SME clients, Kamal said. Nadjari founded the business in 2019 but was ousted as its chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/sep\/29\/britishvolt-38bn-battery-factory-green-industry\">last summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Britishvolt\u2019s future seemed promising: <\/strong>Nadjari founded the startup \u2014 once touted by former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/business-64238306\">key to the country\u2019s clean energy transition<\/a> \u2014 in 2019, raising some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/britishvolt\">USD 2.4 bn<\/a> over 5 funding rounds. The company had ambitions of developing a 30 GWh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishvolt.com\/what-we-do\/\">battery manufacturing plant<\/a> worth GBP 3.8 bn making batteries \u2014 including EV batteries and battery storage solutions \u2014 with a plan to generate energy from a 200 MW solar farm on site, according to their website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did it all go wrong? <\/strong>Plans went south nine months after breaking ground on its gigafactory near Blyth in Northumberland. The company\u2019s valuation allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-10\/little-known-investor-proposes-rescue-deal-for-britishvolt\">dropped<\/a> more than 90% compared to its 2022 standing after failing to secure the capital needed to build the plant, did not have enough of a customer base, and did not have a solid track record in tech development, David Bailey, a professor of business economics at Birmingham Business School told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/the-collapse-of-britishvolt\">Wired<\/a>. Nadjari reportedly resigned last year after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/aug\/12\/huge-uk-electric-car-battery-factory-on-life-support-to-cut-costs\">leaked documents<\/a> stating that the company was on \u201clife support\u201d to reduce costs were published.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What now? <\/strong>Nadjari entered a non-binding bid last week and was expected to submit a binding offer by yesterday\u2019s deadline, the FT reports. Well, minus the zombie part, co-author of a study on the impact of rising temperatures on disease-causing fungus Asiya Gusa told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/climate-change\/news\/the-last-of-us-fungi-global-warming-b2272452.html#comments-area\">the Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How would that work? <\/strong>The microbes in disease-causing fungus are not likely to survive in the heat of healthy bodies, but rising external temperatures brought on by global warming can cause the microbes to change the way they act on humans during infection, a study says. In other words, as the fungus develops heat resistance to adapt outside the human body, it also develops increased disease-causing potential in humans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there is still a lot we don\u2019t know: <\/strong>Researchers found that the rate of some mutations were five times higher in fungi raised at body temperature, compared to those raised at 30\u00b0C, it is still not clear how high the risk to humans can be or at which temperatures it can begin to cause serious harm.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content -->\n\n\t\n<\/article><!-- #post-${ID} -->\n\n\n    <div
