people. <\/strong>The news slowdown continues as the week wraps up, but we have a couple of stories from Morocco and Jordan making headlines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enterp<\/strong><strong>rise Climate will January.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>US firm Clean-Seas is acquiring a 51% stake in Morocco\u2019s Ecosynergie Group, after the two companies agreed to jointly develop a commercial scale waste plastic-to-energy facility last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We have more on this story and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORIES OUTSIDE THE REGION\u2026 are actually not climate-friendly.<\/strong> South Africa has seen the worst of its power shortages, but careful consumption is still needed, says outgoing CEO of state power company Eskom Andre De Ruyter. South Africa\u2019s power outage crisis \u2014 which earlier this month saw households without electricity for up to ten hours a day \u2014 is \u201creceding,\u201d thanks to recent maintenance work, De Ruyter says. But with power cuts set to continue for at least another two years, South African citizens need to reduce their usage where possible, De Ruyter added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regulatory constraints impeding private sector renewable energy provision are among the key reasons for the country\u2019s power deficit<\/strong>, along with aging coal-based infrastructure, corruption and criminal activity. Eskom consumes some 90 metric tons of coal yearly to generate electricity, according to South Africa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov.za\/files\/media\/explained\/South-African-Coal-Sector-Report.pdf\">Energy Ministry<\/a>. <strong>The story is getting some coverage:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/south-africas-eskom-says-worst-power-cuts-over-now-urges-less-use-2023-01-22\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-22\/south-africa-faces-two-more-years-of-power-outages-eskom-says?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>And speaking of highly-polluting fuel, Norway plans to auction a record number of oil<\/strong><strong> and gas blocks in the Arctic. <\/strong>The country plans to offer a total of 92 oil and gas blocks in both the Norwegian and the Barents Seas to energy firms. The country\u2019s exploration offerings in the Barents Sea are the highest since 2003, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/norway-offers-up-92-new-oil-gas-exploration-blocks-2023-01-24\/\">Reuters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/pmn\/business-pmn\/norway-plans-to-offer-record-number-of-arctic-oil-gas-exploration-blocks\">Financial Post<\/a> report.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- Sustainability innovators can now nominate themselves for the UAE\u2019s Zayed <\/strong><strong>Sustainability Prize<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303121581\">statement<\/a>. SMEs, nonprofit organizations, and high schools can submit innovative sustainability solutions to compete for a USD 3 mn prize which will be divided among five categories: Health, food, energy, water, and global high schools. Applications are open for entry <a href=\"https:\/\/entry.zayedsustainabilityprize.com\/ZSPHome?_ga=2.115502351.860759953.1674567132-1707525448.1674567132\">here<\/a> until 2 May and award recipients will be announced during COP28 next November.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- KSA\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sumouholding.com\/\">Sumou Holding<\/a><\/strong><strong> will produce its first electric car with China\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enovatemotors.com\/home\">Enovate<\/a><\/strong> <strong>within 18 months<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/article\/46354\/%D8%B3%D9%85%D9%88-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AC-%D8%A3%D9%88%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%B3%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%87%D8%A7-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%83%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%A6%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AE%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%84-18-%D8%B4%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%8B\/\">Asharq Business<\/a> reports. The two companies are currently running tests on two EV models to assess their suitability for the Kingdom's climate, and conducting logistical and market studies and securing production components. Sumou and Enovate assigned an MoU last month to set up an EV factory that is expected to produce some <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/11783b31-2cc0-4e20-8474-8a10600554ee\">100k cars per year<\/a> in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- By 2030, importing green hydrogen into the EU will likely <\/strong><strong>be more cost-effective than domestic production in many EU countries<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/auroraer.com\/media\/renewable-hydrogen-imports-could-compete-with-eu-production-by-2030\/\">a study<\/a> from energy research firm Aurora Energy. The cost of producing green hydrogen in Germany \u2014 which the research uses as a case study \u2014 by 2030 would be some EUR 3.9-5 per kg, Aurora calculated. The acquisition agreement, which is expected to close in 1Q 2023, comes after the two companies signed a \u201cbinding term sheet\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/feeds.issuerdirect.com\/news-release.html?newsid=7814029211466832\">in April 2022<\/a> to jointly develop a commercial scale pyrolysis facility, the statement adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wait, what is pyrolysis?<\/strong> Pyrolysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fenrg.2019.00027\/full#:~:text=Pyrolysis%20is%20a%20common%20technique,et%20al.%2C%202017).\">can be used<\/a> to convert plastic waste into liquid oil by heating the plastic at temperatures ranging from 300\u2013900\u00b0C, without oxygen, so that it breaks down. The hydrocarbon liquids produced through this process <a href=\"https:\/\/cen.acs.org\/environment\/recycling\/Amid-controversy-industry-goes-plastics-pyrolysis\/100\/i36\">can then be used<\/a> for energy or converted back into new plastics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>Clean-Seas is investing USD 6.5 mn in cash in the acquisition, with USD 2 mn to be paid upon closing and the remaining USD 4.5 mn to be paid within 10 months of closing, according to the statement. Clean-Seas will acquire ESG\u2019s current assets, which include two existing pyrolysis plants with a daily capacity of 10 tons each, other pyrolysis equipment and technology, five hectares of land, and licenses to operate pyrolysis facilities, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What currently happens to the waste treated by ESG? <\/strong>ESG currently has over 10k tons of feedstock \u2014 presumably plastic waste ready to be treated through pyrolysis \u2014 ready to be repurposed into clean fuels and hydrogen, the statement notes. The company also has an offtake agreement with a local oil and gas distributor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expansion plans in the pipeline:<\/strong> Within six months of the acquisition, ESG\u2019s pyrolysis plants\u2019 capacity will grow to 120 tons per day. This increase will come from two new plants, each of which will have a daily production capacity of 50 tons, with one due to be installed and operational in 2Q 2023 and the other due to be operational by the end of 3Q 2023. The aim is to grow ESG\u2019s plastic waste processing capacity to reach 350 tons daily or more within two years, the statement says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The post-acquisition set-up:<\/strong> After the acquisition closes, ESG will be renamed Clean-Seas Morocco. SAF was used on a Boeing 777 aircraft to demonstrate that the low-carbon fuel does not require special technical support or changes to the aircraft\u2019s engine. SAF is currently permitted to be <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f01010d7-8133-4244-b7f9-42a9d9efcc44\">blended up to 50%<\/a> with regular jet fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this important?<\/strong> Ground tests and experimental test flights analyze the specific outputs of the aircraft\u2019s engine to test the operational performance and fuel systems during the planned test flight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details: <\/strong>Ground testing compared the performance of two engines \u2014 one fuelled with SAF and another with conventional fuel \u2014 undergoing a series of tests including a simulated take-off and climb at full flight durations running at maximum speed and intensity. The engines were then run at cruise settings for 15 minutes. Data was then reviewed after cooldown to study how the different fuels impacted the engines\u2019 overall performance. The airline is proceeding with its first experimental test flight using 100% SAF this week, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paving the way for big emissions cuts: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aerospace.honeywell.com\/us\/en\/about-us\/news\/2022\/01\/what-is-sustainable-aviation-fuel?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=22-aero-ww-dsa&utm_term=dsa_aero&utm_content=dyn-en-lp&gclid=CjwKCAiApvebBhAvEiwAe7mHSGhcZTTlkemN_j7BwR6SIKRIydayLOL0qCL3MmO9o_2YjbVrDnr3PBoC-XIQAvD_BwE\">SAF<\/a> \u2014 \u200b\u200bwhich are made of mustard seeds, soy beans, and non-edible oils \u2014 can potentially cut carbon emissions by up to 80% and contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And the UAE is on track to produce its own: <\/strong>Masdar, Adnoc, Emirates Airways, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tadweer.gov.ae\/en\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Tadweer<\/a> will conduct a joint feasibility study with BP on <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fe816882-70d1-498c-9017-d4c20fe76a56\">the production of SAFs<\/a> by using solid waste and renewable hydrogen. The companies could potentially set up the region\u2019s first commercial-scale SAF production facility in Abu Dhabi. Global temperatures are currently 1.2\u00b0C higher than 1850 levels, and on track to hit a catastrophic 1.6\u00b0C warmer, but the increase would have been a fraction higher (0.1\u00b0F to be exact) if not for an increase in global atmospheric dust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How they figured it out:<\/strong> The study used satellite and ground measurements, and data gathered from ice cores, marine sediment and peat bogs to determine that the amount of dust in the atmosphere has increased by as much as 55% since the mid-1880s. They found that atmospheric dust scatters sunlights, alters cloud cover and deposits nutrients into the ocean leading to phytoplankton growth which in turn absorbs CO2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it\u2019s not good news for us:<\/strong> Atmospheric dust above deserts \u2014 like in our neck of the woods \u2014 increases global warming because the land surfaces already reflect sunlight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this important? <\/strong>Changes in atmospheric dust are not currently factored into climate modeling, and the study authors say that if we want climate projections to be as accurate as possible then the possibility that dust increase may have masked up to 8% of the greenhouse warming should be taken into account.<\/p>\n\t<\/div><!-- .entry-content
