The agreements cover emissions reductions, energy security, and the study of a potential hydrogen and ammonia pipeline between the countries. <strong>We have more on this story in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Germany joins in on Mediterranean<\/strong><strong> hydrogen pipeline:<\/strong> Germany will join Spain, Portugal, and France\u2019s planned H2Med green hydrogen corridor, which \u2014 once operational in 2030 \u2014 will supply an estimated 2 mn metric tons of the green fuel (c.10% of the EU\u2019s hydrogen demand), German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday. The corridor, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/spain-france-portugal-agree-new-energy-route-pm-sanchez-says-2022-10-20\/\">first announced last October<\/a>, is expected to cost some USD 2.6 bn, Reuters previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/h2med-hydrogen-pipeline-france-cost-25-bln-euros-spanish-pm-sanchez-says-2022-12-09\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is getting ink from:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-politics-france-government-european-union-germany-a9c9475ec75e58773cac38d2ccb7b4bf\">The AP<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/74d9fa2f-b592-4c1b-a14f-43b708661c03\">The Financial Times<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-to-join-mediterranean-hydrogen-pipeline-project\/a-64483071\">Deutsche Welle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CORRECTION- <\/strong>We incorrectly stated in yesterday\u2019s issue that Adnoc holds a 42% stake in Fertiglobe, when Adnoc in fact holds a 36% stake in Fertiglobe. We have corrected <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/05e21464-1763-4620-ac62-73fec9737834\">the story<\/a> on our website.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>IN COP LAND- COP28 host country the UAE is under the microscope for <\/strong><strong>its high per capita emissions in the run-up to the summit<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/017eaeae-185d-44f5-898e-40be20473b15\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Like other MENA oil and gas giants \u2014 including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar \u2014 the UAE has some of the highest global carbon emissions per capita, \u201csurpassing other big emitters including the US, China and Russia,\u201d the salmon-colored paper notes, citing information from research group Our World In Data. Independent scientific research group Climate Action Tracker has termed the UAE\u2019s national emissions reduction target of 31% by 2030 compared to a business-as-usual scenario \u201chighly insufficient,\u201d the outlet adds, adding that emissions would more than triple compared to 1990 levels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But the UAE says it\u2019s prioritizing climate action: <\/strong>The UAE is reportedly set to announce a new emissions reduction target of 18% by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, in its submission to the UN this year, the FT notes. And the country has \u201cprioritized climate change in its national agenda,\u201d its Climate Change Ministry is said to have told the news outlet. COP28 will be a COP of action, COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b0ae4abd-a265-4945-9e3a-106f8f93e215\">said last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- The voluntary carbon offset market is set to grow at least <\/strong><strong>fivefold by 2030<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shell.com\/shellenergy\/othersolutions\/carbonmarketreports\/_jcr_content\/root\/main\/section\/simple_1854223447\/simple\/call_to_action\/links\/item0.stream\/1674112112488\/ea9cd7629a713c0efa53be567b2d81bcbcd704a7\/the-voluntary-carbon-market-2022-insights-and-trends.pdf\">joint report<\/a> by oil giant Shell and Boston Consulting Group (BCG). 52% of companies expect their portfolios to be dominated by carbon removal credits by 2030 and the voluntary carbon offset market will grow to USD 10-40 bn by 2030 \u2014 up from USD 2 bn in 2021, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> Carbon credits are currently in hot water, with climate activists warning that carbon credits are being used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/international\/story\/50689\/carbon-offsets-net-zero-greenwashing-scam\/\">greenwash corporate emissions<\/a> and a joint investigation by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jan\/18\/revealed-forest-carbon-offsets-biggest-provider-worthless-verra-aoe\">The Guardian<\/a>, German weekly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zeit.de\/\">Die Zeit<\/a> and nonprofit investigative journalism organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.source-material.org\/\">SourceMaterial<\/a> release last found <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a966a586-541d-42ac-9d15-1d4a53fa3f75\">found<\/a> that over 90% of the offsets provided by the world\u2019s biggest carbon offset provider <a href=\"https:\/\/verra.org\/\">Verra<\/a> are phantom credits, with only a handful showing evidence of reducing deforestation.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-06\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WORTH READING- Could \u201csuper-leverage points\u201d lower global emissions dramatically?<\/strong> Super leverage points \u2014 relatively low-cost and difficulty policy actions that would have an outsized impact on decarbonization \u2014 including requiring more green ammonia use in fertilizer production, encouraging plant protein consumption, and mandating EV adoption could eventually result in a 70% reduction in emissions across the world\u2019s most carbon-intensive sectors, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.systemiq.earth\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/The-Breakthrough-Effect.pdf\">research<\/a> by the University of Exeter and consultancy firm Systemiq.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART-<\/strong> Leverage points refer to low or net-zero carbon alternatives becoming more competitive than carbon-intensive choices. If EVs replaced fuel combustion engine vehicles through the introduction of EV sale mandates, it would offset emissions and increase the affordability of battery supplies resulting in an acceleration of renewable energy projects. The tipping point for EVs is the most likely of the three aforementioned super leverage points to be realized in the near term, the report notes, with mandates ending the sale of fuel-based cars set by the UK for 2030 and China for 2035.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>WORTH READING #2- CO2 removal tech accounts for only 0.1% of carbon capture: <\/strong>An independent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stateofcdr.org\/\">report<\/a> led by the University of Oxford has found that 99.9% of all CO2 being removed from the atmosphere annually is through forests with only 0.1% being removed through carbon dioxide removal methods, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/global-carbon-dioxide-removal-totals-2-billion-tonnes-per-year-report-2023-01-19\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The report \u2014 which measures carbon dioxide removal or the process of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it on land, the ocean and geological formations and in products \u2014 estimates that 99.9% of all CO2 is removed from afforestation and reforestation and only 0.1% is removed through carbon dioxide removal methods like bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), biochar, and direct air capture with carbon capture and storage (DACCS). Investments in new technologies have amounted to c. The contract is due to complete in 1Q 2023, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GCC interest in European offshore wind assets has been on the rise:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s Lamprell <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a42c2622-5ae8-4655-a2d8-37f62ff3f809\">signed a contract<\/a> worth over USD 200 mn to supply wind turbine components to Scotland\u2019s Moray West offshore wind farm in September. Despite only 17% of the country\u2019s land being arable, the Algerian National Agricultural and Rural Development Program has boosted food production, increased water-use efficiency, decreased crop emissions, and lowered rates of malnourishment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food production boost: <\/strong>The country improved its food security by designing policies to encourage private sector investment and reduce food imports by removing foreign ownership restrictions and lifting bans on agricultural equipment imports, increasing food production by 114% per capita between 2002 and 2018, the report finds. That far outpaces the 9% median growth in food production across Africa and the 5% median in emerging and diversifying countries during the same time period. Increased food production also helped bring down undernourishment rates in the country to below 3% of the population in 2019 \u2014 the lowest rate in Africa \u2014 from 8% in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clean energy sources: <\/strong>A USD 10.3 mn private public partnership <a href=\"https:\/\/alcantarasystems.com\/projects-archive\/proyecto-de-touggourt\/\">greenhouse complex<\/a> in the city of Touggourt \u2014 a collaboration between Algeria\u2019s National Office of Irrigation and Drainage and Spain\u2019s Alcantara Systems \u2014 is powered by renewable geothermal energy. \u201cThe greenhouses are expected to increase yields significantly, while keeping water use, energy costs, and emissions low,\u201d the report notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tackling water waste and targeting crop cycles and yields: <\/strong>The report finds that Algeria achieved the highest agricultural water-use efficiency in Africa and decreased its crop emissions intensity by 51% between 2002 and 2018. The country\u2019s Agriculture Ministry used satellites and drones to identify irrigation needs and introduced water table-fed irrigation systems in the El Oued desert, installing rotating sprinkler systems to draw on water tables to irrigate fruits and vegetables. It has also introduced traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc2385en\/online\/giahs-2022\/ghout-oases-system.html\">ghouts<\/a> \u2014 oases created by planting palms as windbreaks directly above the water table and creating depressions in the dunes ten meters deep to grow crops alongside them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Incentives, land grants, and more private sector engagement:<\/strong> A 2010 program incentivized farmers to invest in short-cycle crops with low water requirements and switch to high-yielding varieties of staple crops through land grants and fertilizer subsidies. But is there room for FCEVS in the age of fully electric vehicles?<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do FCEVs work? <\/strong>FCEVs create electricity using hydrogen and oxygen, produce no tailpipe emissions and emit only water and warm air as a byproduct. A fuel cell made of thin plates draws hydrogen from a pressurized tank and fuses it with oxygen to produce electricity. They\u2019re more efficient than conventional internal combustion vehicles with a driving range of over 300 miles (483 km) and can be refueled in 5 minutes, according to the US Department of Energy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/afdc.energy.gov\/vehicles\/fuel_cell.html\">Alternative Fuels Data Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Widespread use is hampered by limited infrastructure: <\/strong>Hydrogen fueling stations are still limited, postponing the widespread adoption of the technology as a viable alternative to combustion engine vehicles and EVs. Hydrogen is also more expensive than traditional gasoline (so far). Additionally, because hydrogen is highly flammable, FCEVs (and charging stations) have to abide by more stringent safety requirements, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long-haul transport may benefit more from hydrogen tech: <\/strong>Hydrogen\u2019s true potential may lie in long-haul transport, according to a McKinsey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/operations\/our-insights\/global-infrastructure-initiative\/voices\/unlocking-hydrogens-power-for-long-haul-freight-transport\">report<\/a>. Battery weight and charging speeds make it less efficient to electrify bus and truck fleets, which can benefit from the longer range and shorter fueling times of hydrogen \u2014 not to mention not having the added weight of bulky batteries. Mercedes-Benz is developing <a href=\"https:\/\/media.daimlertruck.com\/marsMediaSite\/en\/instance\/ko\/Mercedes-Benz-Trucks-provides-outlook-on-hydrogen-based-GenH2-Truck-at-IAA-Transportation-2022-in-Hanover.xhtml?oid=52032506\">hydrogen-fueled trucks<\/a> which are expected to have a range of 1k km or more and be released during the second half of the decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EVs hold the advantage in passenger cars: <\/strong>As the cost of making EV batteries goes down, automakers are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.automotiveworld.com\/articles\/why-battery-evs-have-raced-ahead-of-hydrogen-fuel-cell-vehicles\/#:~:text=Compared%20to%20FCEVs%2C%20battery%20electric,targets%20and%20turn%20a%20profit.\">investing<\/a> more resources to develop hybrids and EVs \u2014 which are more cost-efficient \u2014 rather than FCEVs. Besides Toyota\u2019s Mirai, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundai.co.uk\/new-cars\/nexo\">Hyundai Nexo<\/a> is the only other commercially available hydrogen fuel cell vehicle on the market. Honda\u2019s discontinued <a href=\"https:\/\/global.honda\/innovation\/FuelCell\/Clarity-Fuel-Cell-picturebook.html\">Clarity Fuel Cell<\/a>, was also powered by hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But it isn\u2019t stopping automakers from experimenting with the technology: <\/strong>BMW is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.bmwgroup.com\/global\/article\/detail\/T0406122EN\/bmw-group-commences-production-of-small-series-hydrogen-powered-model?language=en\">developing<\/a> the iX5 Hydrogen model, with plans for release internationally in 2Q 2023.
