Let\u2019s jump right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>The OPEC Fund has raised USD 1 bn from a three-year sustainability bond that will be used to finance or refinance sustainable development projects aligned with the fund\u2019s goals, and UAE\u2019s Masdar has confirmed plans to raise as much as USD 750 mn in a maiden green bond issuance in 2H 2023 to help finance its ambitious global expansion plans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>Environmentalists, trade unions<\/strong> <strong>call<\/strong><strong> on Biden to remain steadfast on EV tax credit program in the face of EU opposition: <\/strong>US environmental groups and trade union representatives last week urged President Joe Biden to resist calls from the EU and other allies to amend EV tax incentives put forward under his <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)<\/a>. The IRA includes a consumer tax credit mechanism of up to USD 7.5k per vehicle on North American-made EVs, which allies have criticized for potentially driving clean energy investment into US industry, at the expense of other locations. US Trade Representative Katherine Tai previously noted that the Biden administration wants to avoid an EV subsidy race with Europe. <strong>The story is attracting some international coverage:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/unions-press-biden-administration-not-change-ev-tax-credit-rules-2023-01-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-19\/us-trade-chief-working-with-eu-to-address-ev-subsidy-concerns?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/unions-urge-president-biden-to-resist-foreign-pressure-on-ev-tax-credits-11674222730?mod=us_more_pos1\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- Qatar-based SMEs working in clean energy can access low-interest loans from state-owned Qatar Development Bank<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qdb.qa\/en\/green-financing\">statement<\/a>. The scope of projects includes waste management and treatment, recycling, renewables, clean tech production, and carbon reduction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA #2- Morocco\u2019s senate has approved a bill for the self-production of electrical <\/strong><strong>energy<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapexpress.ma\/actualite\/activites-parlementaires\/chambre-conseillers-approuve-projet-loi-relatif-lautoproduction-denergie-electrique\/\">statement<\/a>. The bill \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cdd53557-a890-417d-869f-39d6d779e3d5\">unanimously approved<\/a> by the House of Representatives last December \u2014 will allow citizens, SMEs, and large enterprises to generate their own electricity, particularly from renewable sources.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1-<\/strong> <strong>The UAE is exploring carbon trading:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s Securities and Commodities Authorities is in talks with the Climate Change and Environment Ministry and other stakeholders to develop a carbon trading initiative in an effort to offset the country\u2019s carbon footprint and reach net zero in 30 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/markets\/2023\/01\/19\/uae-securities-regulator-plans-to-develop-carbon-trading-mechanism\/\">the National<\/a> reports. This follows the UAE\u2019s Abu Dhabi Global Market <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e6167da5-7401-4525-a79d-20e3e0de4124\">announcing plans<\/a> in November to launch the \u201ca fully regulated\u201d voluntary carbon market in partnership with Singapore-based digital exchange AirCarbon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- French utility company <\/strong><strong>Engie<\/strong><strong> wants to expand in the GCC <\/strong><strong>renewables market<\/strong>, country manager for the GCC and Pakistan Frederic Claux told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2023\/01\/19\/frances-engie-aims-to-expand-in-renewables-across-the-gcc\/\">the National<\/a> last week. Renewables are a priority for the company as it currently eyes the 1.5 GW Al Ajban solar plant in Abu Dhabi and new wind project proposals in Saudi Arabia. Engie is also working on a 30 MW solar project with the KSA\u2019s National Agricultural Development Company. Last January, Engie <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/92b788af-2a3c-42ae-af76-0c5c72603973\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Masdar and Fertiglobe to co-develop a green hydrogen facility in the UAE.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Acwa Power\u2019s <\/strong><strong>first green hydrogen plant<\/strong><strong> will be up and <\/strong><strong>running in 2026<\/strong>, CEO Paddy Padmanathan said on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alarabiya.net\/aswaq\/special-stories\/2023\/01\/18\/-%d8%a3%d9%83%d9%88%d8%a7-%d8%a8%d8%a7%d9%88%d8%b1-%d9%84%d9%84%d8%b9%d8%b1%d8%a8%d9%8a%d8%a9-%d8%aa%d8%b4%d8%ba%d9%8a%d9%84-%d8%a3%d9%88%d9%84-%d9%85%d8%b5%d9%86%d8%b9-%d9%84%d9%84%d9%87%d9%8a%d8%af%d8%b1%d9%88%d8%ac%d9%8a%d9%86-%d8%a7%d9%84%d8%a3%d8%ae%d8%b6%d8%b1-%d8%b9%d8%a7%d9%85-2026\">Al Arabiya<\/a> reports. Once operational, the plant will produce 650 tons of green hydrogen per day, to be used as feedstock for green ammonia \u2014 of which some 1.15 mn tons will then be shipped to Europe and Southeast Asia, Padmanathan added. We assume Padmanathan is referring to Acwa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/acwapower.com\/en\/projects\/neom-green-hydrogen-project\/\">NEOM green hydrogen plant<\/a>, though Al Arabiya doesn\u2019t specify this.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>CLIMATE DIPLOMACY- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/index.htm\">European Investment Bank<\/a><\/strong><strong> President Werner Hoyer met Egypt\u2019s <\/strong><strong>International Cooperation Minister Rania Al Mashat at Davos<\/strong> to discuss next steps in the lender\u2019s role as \u201cmain development partner\u201d for the Egyptian government\u2019s landmark <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b485ea89-be82-498c-a46a-47e7ddcae91e\">Nexus on Water, Food and Energy (NWFE)<\/a> climate program, according to a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid032WtbiRsez8mt6MeuGpJotcPNkLTUhXLooCzHQH87sEf4QZxaZPpTDGbm6pATUxaql\">statement<\/a>. The project is initially targeting a minimum of 18k tons per year sourced from Fertiglobe\u2019s UAE operations, it adds. Adnoc holds a 36% stake in Fertiglobe, which is MENA\u2019s largest nitrogen fertilizer and ammonia producer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enterprise, what does sequestering CO2 in a carbonate saline aquifer mean? <\/strong>Put simply, what we\u2019re talking about is capturing CO2 and then injecting it into rocks \u2014 literally putting the carbon back deep in the ground. Saline aquifers are \u201cporous and permeable <a href=\"https:\/\/ogst.ifpenergiesnouvelles.fr\/articles\/ogst\/pdf\/2005\/03\/benthman_vol60n3.pdf\">reservoir rocks<\/a> that contain saline fluid in the pore spaces between the rock grains.\u201d Injecting the CO2 into this saline fluid is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/content\/pdf\/10.1007\/s11242-007-9132-5.pdf\">three ways (pdf)<\/a> in which captured carbon can be trapped in geological formations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This project will ultimately contribute to Fertiglobe\u2019s production of lower-carbon <\/strong><strong>ammonia<\/strong>, the Wam statement notes. AED 18 bn (over USD 5 bn) will be invested in the first phase of development, according to the statement. The facility will be built in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taziz.com\/en\/who-we-are\/advancing-industry.html\">Ta\u2019ziz Industrial Chemicals Zone<\/a> in Abu Dhabi\u2019s Al Ruwais Industrial City and will be Proman\u2019s first investment in the country. The agreement is subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> The new facility will have an anticipated annual production capacity of up to 1.8 mn tons, the statement notes. Most of the chemicals manufactured in the plant will be produced in the UAE for the first time, the statement adds. These are presumably chemicals for which methanol is feedstock. Methanol has wide industrial application in areas that include fuels, solvents, pharma, and construction materials, the statement says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Methanol is being touted as a \u201cclean\u201d fuel\u2026: <\/strong>Compared to other fossil fuels, methanol \u201csignificantly reduces emissions of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.methanex.com\/about-methanol\/methanol-marine-fuel\">according to<\/a> methanol producer Methanex. Methanol is one of a number of so-called \u201calternative fuels\u201d that have the potential to reduce emissions from global shipping \u2014 alongside biodiesel, hydrogen and ammonia \u2014 according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-4060\/2\/4\/29\">2021 Southampton University study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026but is it really? It all depends on how it\u2019s produced: <\/strong>\u201cThe carbon footprint of methanol depends strongly on the feedstock and the production pathway,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiogearup.com\/the-carbon-footprint-of-methanol-produced-from-various-feedstocks\/\">notes independent advisory firm<\/a> Gear Up in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studiogearup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/2022_sGU-for-MI_Methanol-carbon-footprint-DEF-1.pdf\">recent study (pdf)<\/a>. Using natural gas to produce methane is less polluting than using coal \u2014 and using renewable energy, or carbon capture, is even more climate-friendly. But the impact of methanol on decarbonizing an industry like shipping is really contingent on the source of the feedstock, the production process, and the scalability and cost of these things, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalmaritimeforum.org\/news\/methanol-as-a-scalable-zero-emission-fuel\">the write-up<\/a> of a 2021 webinar by the Global Maritime Forum. By 2035, Donmez projects the country will have a solar generation capacity totaling some 53 GW, wind power generation worth 29.6 GW, hydroelectric energy generation worth 35.1 GW, and 5.1 GW from geothermal and biomass power production plants combined.
