We have chapter and verse in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IN COP LAND- We have the official logo + branding for COP28: <\/strong>UAE Foreign Affairs Minister Abdullah bin Zayed formally unveiled COP28\u2019s official logo and branding on Monday, at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y8rd2fENzlU\">watch, runtime: 02:55<\/a>). The \u201cOne World\u201d branding represents the idea that the world needs to leverage our collective resources \u2014 natural, technological, and human \u2014 to spur multi-sector innovation, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303119954\">Wam<\/a>. It\u2019s intended to cement COP28 as a COP of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a9c832ed-f423-479e-884d-90cabefe3a0b\">inclusivity and action<\/a> by bringing together public and private sectors, scientists, civil society, women, and youth from different geographies, the Wam statement adds. COP28 will take place at Dubai\u2019s Expo City from 30 November to 12 December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- US Fed wants major US banks to<\/strong><strong> estimate climate change effects on financial risks: <\/strong>The US Federal Reserve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/other20230117a.htm\">has told<\/a> the country\u2019s six largest banks to submit data on how their businesses would be impacted by various hypothetical climate change-driven scenarios. The aim? To increase awareness of how financial risks could show up \u2014 possibly as a greater likelihood of loan defaults or losses, or a change in risk profiles. Estimates will include how more extreme weather events could affect real estate portfolios and how shifting to a lower-carbon economy could impact corporate lending.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They have until the end of July:<\/strong> Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs Group, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo have been asked to submit responses by 31 July and the Fed will publish a summary of results towards the end of 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is making the rounds:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/fed-wants-climate-risk-analysis-6-largest-us-banks-by-july-31-2023-01-17\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/subscriber.politicopro.com\/article\/2023\/01\/fed-announces-scenarios-for-big-bank-climate-exercise-00078159\">Politico<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-17\/wall-street-s-biggest-banks-set-for-fed-climate-impact-exercise?srnd=green&leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/01\/18\/investing\/premarket-stocks-trading\/index.html\">CNN<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- If you\u2019re in Doha, you can now rent electric scooters and bikes, courtesy of<\/strong><strong> USA\u2019s Lime:<\/strong> US-based electric vehicle company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.li.me\/en-es\/\">Lime<\/a> rolled out its rental Gen 4 electric bikes and scooters in Doha, according to a company statement picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/lime-launches-latest-gen4-e-bikes-and-e-scooters-in-doha-as-part-of-middle-east-expansion-fdxp7zik\">Zawya<\/a>. The company recently launched in Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Morocco sets 2030 renewables target:<\/strong> Renewables will account for 50-52% of Morocco\u2019s energy mix by 2030, Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2234721\/middle-east\">Arab News<\/a>. Morocco\u2019s wind and solar resources have the potential to make the North African country one of the cheapest providers of renewables in the world, Akhannouch said, and can be used to fuel the country\u2019s green hydrogen ambitions. Renewables currently account for 38% of Morocco\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Green hydrogen may be added to the UAE\u2019s revised <\/strong><strong>energy strategy<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/uae-energy-minister-expects-hydrogen-element-revised-energy-strategy-2023-01-18\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports quoting Emirati Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei. The revised plan will be updated to align with the country\u2019s net zero target of 2050 and launched later this year. The investigation found that most of Verra\u2019s offsets are phantom credits that may be worsening global warming, with \u201conly a handful of Verra\u2019s rainforest projects showing evidence of deforestation reductions,\u201d and \u201c94% of the credits had no benefit to the climate.\u201d Verra\u2019s voluntary carbon standard \u2014 which has sold credits to the likes of Gucci \u2014 has issued upward of 1 bn carbon credits and approves three quarters of all voluntary offsets, 40% of which comes from its rainforest protection program.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verra has been gaining traction in the region as VCMs pick up pace: <\/strong>EGX was <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/20\/africas-first-voluntary-carbon-market-will-launch-in-mid-2023-88131\/\">in talks with<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/20\/africas-first-voluntary-carbon-market-will-launch-in-mid-2023-88131\/\">carbon standard Verra<\/a> last November in anticipation of its launch of Africa\u2019s first voluntary carbon market. In the same month, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation (Apicorp) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/40fc6b10-9dac-40df-ad62-1bc5a51e0c14\">inked a USD 75 mn murabaha agreement<\/a> to fund high-quality voluntary carbon offsets to develop environmentally friendly projects registered to Verra.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WORTH READING- Egypt\u2019s AUC is exploring a new catalyst for hydrogen <\/strong><strong>production:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s American University in Cairo (AUC) is researching ways to up the efficiency and reduce the cost of electrolysis \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/08\/24\/enterprise-explains-green-hydrogen-51370\/\">process used<\/a> to produce green hydrogen \u2014 by substituting new materials that are more affordable and easily sourced, according to an article in its <a href=\"https:\/\/auctoday.com\/2022\/11\/04\/future-fuel\/\">AUC Today<\/a> magazine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In a nutshell:<\/strong> The idea is essentially to try substituting expensive, difficult-to-source platinum \u2014 the most commonly-used \u201ccatalyst\u201d used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen \u2014 for other, more readily available \u2018transition\u2019 metals, the piece notes. Where possible, the team at AUC\u2019s Energy Materials lab sources these metals from recycled materials, it adds. They have two \u201cactive\u201d projects on the go: one focused on traditional electrolysis, powered by electricity generated by a renewable power plant, and another focused on a less advanced technology, where the catalyst absorbs solar energy directly from sunlight to split water molecules, the article tells us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this important? <\/strong>Electrolyzers imported into Egypt \u2014 and regional countries with similar challenges \u2014 won\u2019t necessarily be built to withstand the composition of the local water, just as imported solar panels are often impacted by dust in a way they aren\u2019t in Europe or the US, lab head Nageh Allam tells AUC Today. \u201cMaybe our research will lead to a better catalyst or one that\u2019s more durable in the Egyptian climate,\u201d Allam adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bahrain will host the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/europetro.com\/esfmena\">Energy & Sustainability Forum<\/a><\/strong> from next Sunday, 22 January to Tuesday, 24 January in Manama. The agreements signed on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week will see Masdar developing projects with a total capacity of 2 GW per country. The Zambian solar projects are estimated to cost USD 2 bn and no financial details on the Ethiopian project were revealed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First up, Zambia: <\/strong>The projects will be developed through a joint venture between state-owned power company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zesco.co.zm\/\">Zesco<\/a> and Masdar, Reuters reports. The first of the planned projects will begin \u201cimmediately\u201d with 500 MW installed over an unspecified number of phases. Additional capacity will be added gradually to reach a total of 2 GW \u201cover the next few years,\u201d Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hakainde.hichilema\/posts\/pfbid033k6PZdQJvbPXCAkGCqc4pY56QQ6nEo9eHMZZqNuzjXPvA1LRCsfiuBaeFZLHccrcl\">a statement<\/a>, without specifying the total number of facilities that will be developed. The projects will be financed through a \u201ccapital injection,\u201d not a loan, Hichilema said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As for Ethiopia, we don\u2019t know much yet:<\/strong> The agreement appears to follow the same framework as those in Zambia, starting with the installation of 500 MW as a first phase, with additional phases to develop up to 2 GW of total capacity, Wam reports. No timeline or information about Masdar\u2019s partners in Ethiopia was revealed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Africa\u2019s gaining momentum in the renewables sector:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s Amea Power has also been investing in the continent. The Dubai-based company announced a new 50 MW solar power plant in West Africa\u2019s Ivory Coast <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2883848f-6efd-4305-8f0a-4d3485c9ec4c\">this week<\/a> and has solar projects in <a href=\"https:\/\/ameapower.com\/320-2-2\/\">Burkina Faso<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrik21.africa\/en\/mali-amea-power-to-build-a-50-mw-solar-power-plant\/\">Mali<\/a>. It also recently added 20 MW of capacity to its solar project in Togo to reach 70 MW <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fe89e3e0-7465-41bb-a6dc-2fe5697fe16c\">last November<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Al Gore along with other climate action advocates touted <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/issues\/2022\/11\/08\/somber-warnings-world-leaders-summit-kicks-off-cop27\/\">Africa\u2019s potential as the<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/issues\/2022\/11\/08\/somber-warnings-world-leaders-summit-kicks-off-cop27\/\">\u201crenewable energy superpower\u201d<\/a> during COP27 last November. The US environmentalist also added that 40% of the global potential for renewables is in Africa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND CENTRAL ASIA IS ON THE MAP-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Masdar is bringing wind power to Kazakhstan: <\/strong>The company inked an agreement with Kazakhstan to develop a 1 GW wind farm, marking its first project in the Central Asian country, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.masdar.ae\/News\/2023\/01\/18\/09\/53\/Masdar-to-Explore-Development-of-Wind-Power-Project\">statement<\/a> released yesterday. Masdar signed the agreement with the Kazakh Energy Ministry and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund, who will jointly develop the project. An initial phase will produce 500 MW of generational capacity and could potentially include battery storage. No timeline or financial details were disclosed in the statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BIG PLANS, BIG CAPACITY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The renewables giant is looking to add up to 10 GW of new capacity this year<\/strong>, as it continues an ambitious, multi-pronged expansion plan targeting renewable energy capacity of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/8052ae3c-a183-40d2-b3cf-27adc011db77\">at least 100 GW<\/a> by 2030, Executive Director of Clean Energy Fawaz Al Muharrami told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2023\/01\/18\/masdar-seeks-new-projects-amid-push-to-boost-capacity-by-10-gigawatts-this-year\/\">the National<\/a> on the sidelines of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The new capacity \u201cwill come from across all countries,\u201d he added. Masdar is also eyeing new investment prospects in the US, he said, confirming reports picked up <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ece9e36f-a728-4633-aef6-7db873fce6ba\">earlier this week<\/a> that it would participate in the US-UAE PACE agreement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Could green bonds be on the horizon? <\/strong>Masdar is looking to finance its projects using different debt mechanisms available in the market, Al Muharrami told the National. If commercial lending is scarce, the company will tap into development finance institutions, he added. It\u2019s also eyeing a green bond issuance to raise additional funds, Al Muharrami added, without specifying when this might happen or how much the company might hope to raise from It reportedly signed a letter of intent with local governments in China\u2019s Shaanxi to set up projects that will double its manufacturing capacity, producing 100 GW of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solarfeeds.com\/mag\/wiki\/solar-wafer\/#:~:text=A%20solar%20wafer%20is%20a,also%20called%20as%20Silicon%20wafer.\">solar wafers<\/a> and 50 GW of solar cells annually, Bloomberg notes, citing a Shanghai Stock Exchange filing. The plants are expected to become operational in 3Q 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What could this mean for us? Even more reliance on The Red Dragon: <\/strong>China already has a monopoly over global solar panel supply chains with a market share of solar manufacturing products exceeding 80%, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/iea.blob.core.windows.net\/assets\/d2ee601d-6b1a-4cd2-a0e8-db02dc64332c\/SpecialReportonSolarPVGlobalSupplyChains.pdf\">July 2022 IEA report (pdf)<\/a>. This could increase to up to 95% by 2025, the report noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MENA\u2019s solar projects have been hampered by supply chain snags: <\/strong>Solar projects in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt have <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/12\/21\/the-green-economy-in-2021-part-i-new-ambitions-amid-supply-chain-woes-61141\/\">all faced delays<\/a> in recent years, partly due to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/global-commodities-boom-putting-egyptian-solar-players-pressure\/\">difficulties procuring<\/a> essential manufacturing components off the back of rising import costs, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/afa55bc3-dec6-4f46-b806-25518b05cda1\">import restrictions<\/a>, and the impact of global inflation on key raw materials like silicon and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there is good news: <\/strong>LONGi indicated interest in growing its MENA footprint <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/97cb4b72-01ae-4ae8-8f16-ea6d1bcf36b0\">earlier this<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/97cb4b72-01ae-4ae8-8f16-ea6d1bcf36b0\">month<\/a>, signing an agreement with KSA\u2019s sovereign wealth fund the Public Investment Fund covering the local manufacture of solar PV products in Saudi Arabia.
