Let\u2019s jump right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>South Korea and the UAE signed 13 MoUs at <a href=\"https:\/\/abudhabisustainabilityweek.com\/\">Abu Dhabi<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/abudhabisustainabilityweek.com\/\">Sustainability Week<\/a> yesterday, including a comprehensive energy partnership covering renewables and a potential carbon market. UAE\u2019s Masdar also signed an agreement with the Netherlands to explore the possibility of green hydrogen exports to Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING <\/strong><strong>TODAY<\/strong><strong>- <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/events\/world-economic-forum-annual-meeting-2023\">The World Economic Forum<\/a> is kicking off today in Davos, Switzerland and running until Friday, January 20. The annual meeting convenes world leaders, industry veterans, and business leaders to discuss priorities for the year ahead and ramp up public-private cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The gig is up, Exxon:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/exxonknew.org\/\">Long-held<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/exxonknew.org\/\">suspicions<\/a> that scientists working for oil giant Exxon identified the threat of global warming as early as the 1970s have been proven correct, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abk0063\">new research<\/a> published in the journal Science on Friday. The research analyzed 100+ internal documents and publications produced in-house by Exxon or co-authored by Exxon scientists in independent publications from 1977-2014. Representatives of BP, Chevron and Saudi Aramco are among the 1.5k business leaders gathering for the summit, the outlet adds.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>OVER IN COP LAND- This year\u2019s COP28 officially has a president: <\/strong>Adnoc and Masdar head Sultan Al Jaber \u2014 who serves as the UAE's special envoy on climate change \u2014 will preside over the upcoming UAE-hosted COP28, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303118810\">statement<\/a> released on Saturday. Al Jaber stated that the \u201cworld is way off track,\u201d and the Global Stocktake (GST) \u2014 the process of measuring the implementation progress of the Paris Agreement targets \u2014 will be conducted at COP28 for the first time since 2015, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can we expect? <\/strong>\u201cGame-changing partnerships, solutions, and outcomes,\u201d Al Jaber said, bridging the North and South, as well as the private and public sectors. For more affordable climate finance, every USD 1 of concessional funding must be matched by USD 2 or 3 in private funding, Al Jaber added, and by 2025 adaptation financing for the Global South should quadruple to USD 40 bn yearly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The appointment is already sparking controversy: <\/strong>The conflict of interest has raised concerns voiced in several international news outlets like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-14\/world-way-off-track-with-climate-goals-says-uae-cop-president?srnd=premium-middle-east#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/12\/cop28-uae-sparks-backlash-by-appointing-oil-chief-as-president.html\">MSNBC<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2023\/01\/12\/uae-names-oil-boss-as-cop28-president-critics-say-it-could-torpedo-climate-talks\">Euronews<\/a>. Others pointed out that Al Jaber also heads Masdar and will provide a \u201cunique combination [that] will help bring all of the necessary stakeholders to the table,\u201d Special Presidential Envoy John Kerry <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ClimateEnvoy\/status\/1613580168555278336\">tweeted<\/a> last week.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>PSA- Tesla customers in the UAE can get a helping (financing) hand: <\/strong>Dubai Islamic Bank is now offering Sharia-compliant automobile financing solutions on all Tesla models, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dib.ae\/about-us\/news\/2023\/01\/12\/dubai-islamic-bank-offers-new-financing-solutions-to-future-tesla-owners?type=news\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- The UAE and India are on the brink of a \u201cmajor <\/strong><strong>agreement\u201d on a renewable energy interconnection project<\/strong>, India\u2019s Power and New and Renewable Energy Minister Raj Kumar Singh reportedly told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/india-uae-close-deal-renewable-electricity-grid-link-indian-minister-2023-01-15\/\">Reuters<\/a> yesterday at the International Renewable Energy Agency\u2019s assembly. The agreement is still awaiting final approvals, Singh added, without indicating when it could be finalized. He added that it would take place within the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ukcop26.org\/one-sun-declaration-green-grids-initiative-one-sun-one-world-one-grid\/\">One Sun, One World, One Grid initiative<\/a> \u2014 a push to create a \u201cmore interconnected global grid,\u201d powered by renewable energy \u2014 of which India is a steering member.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Egypt <\/strong><strong>streamlines environmental<\/strong><strong> approval process for industrial <\/strong><strong>projects: <\/strong>The Egyptian Environment Ministry has reduced the approval time for industrial project permits down to seven business days in a bid to encourage investment, according to a cabinet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid02gaF2x6Mmuee7yWt5pDnPUiHw4ZyoapJqrsoQYvR3wxTCAPk8p4DKTELeyS2ycRDwl\">statement<\/a> released last week. The approvals process previously took up to 30 working days. Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad also discussed potential private sector investments in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4beeff1d-735c-4c56-81bb-121857c2cf91\">Egypt\u2019s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4beeff1d-735c-4c56-81bb-121857c2cf91\">soon-to-be-launched voluntary carbon market<\/a> as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/af58a867-d2f3-47ae-8b23-33d497c311c6\">waste-to-energy projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s Suez Canal Economic Zone <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/16\/egypt-signs-framework-agreements-for-green-hydrogen-ammonia-plants-worth-usd-83-bn-87840\/\">signed seven MoUs<\/a> worth at least USD 83 bn to set up green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities last November at COP27. The UN researchers studied 50k dams globally and found a 13-19% loss in storage capacity already happened in 2022 as a result of sediment clogs. The South Korean government also announced its intention to import green hydrogen from the UAE by 2027 <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/01\/11\/south-korea-will-get-a-whole-lot-of-hydrogen-from-mena-in-coming-years-93252\/\">last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The interest in renewables is also expanding regionally:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) signed an agreement with Kepco and four other firms worth some USD 6.5 bn to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/21ce193c-0194-41cf-b695-c6667585bcb6\">hydrogen and ammonia plant<\/a> last November. The country also set up an export agreement with Saudi Arabia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/saudiexim.gov.sa\/ar\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Saudi Exim<\/a> in December to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52d7d80d-2f55-4f68-b98a-891bce9b5324\">export green hydrogen and ammonia<\/a> to the Korea Trade Ins. The financial details of the agreements and when shipments are expected were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The details:<\/strong> The clean energy source would be produced in Abu Dhabi and then shipped to Holland with plans to supply interested Europe-based contractors with surpluses via trucks, pipeline, and barge transportation networks. The green hydrogen would be used in Dutch sustainable aviation, shipping, and steelmaking industries, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More in the pipeline for transportation:<\/strong> Masdar together with the Port of Amsterdam and the three Dutch firms will also jointly study the development of hydrogen transportation methods, prioritizing the exploration of liquefying hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Masdar\u2019s green hydrogen exports are expanding:<\/strong> The renewables company is partnering with Germany\u2019s Uniper to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f80ba49e-4780-4fba-b4dc-ceca09801618\">a green hydrogen plant<\/a> in the UAE powered by 1.3 GW of solar energy. The plant is expected to generate green hydrogen by 2026 and the EU wants to import the clean fuel the facility will generate. The location of the plant and the financials of the agreement have yet to be disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What they said:<\/strong> Masdar is \u201ccollaborating with a range of partners\u201d in developing and investing in strategic green hydrogen projects, company representatives said in an emailed statement in response to Enterprise Climate\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s part of a larger plan:<\/strong> The firm is aiming for a renewable energy capacity of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0b79dd67-80d2-4748-9205-5570e208771a\">at least<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0b79dd67-80d2-4748-9205-5570e208771a\">100 GW by 2030<\/a> with a production quota of up to 1 mn tons of green hydrogen.
