In another first, Egypt has inaugurated its first trigeneration waste-to-energy facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on this story and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- There\u2019s no single story <\/strong><strong>dominating international climate coverage today<\/strong>, but outlets picked up several developments likely to have a bearing on the year ahead. Some 43% of German companies recently surveyed by the German-African Business Association plan to up their investment in Africa this year, with green hydrogen being an area of particular interest, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/german-companies-plan-invest-more-africa-2023-2022-12-27\/\">Reuters<\/a> poll. Further afield,the Biden administration's USD 369 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a> could push European companies to increase their trade links with China, EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/07ce707d-1cf5-4e9e-ba43-4555ea13b290\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>PSA- Eco-friendly and sustainable projects are eligible for credit lines from Egypt\u2019s Contact Financial Holding, which launched a sustainable financing <\/strong><strong>program <\/strong>to offer credit lines for businesses looking to utilize renewable energy sources and incorporate emission reduction strategies, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/contact-launches-green-finance-u2llhmon\">statement<\/a>. The non-banking financial services outfit\u2019s Green Finance product will provide financing for projects including solar panels, irrigation systems, and greenhouses. The loans come with monthly and quarterly repayment plans up to five years without a down payment requirement.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- KSA\u2019s SNB Capital launches sustainability-focused fund: <\/strong>Saudi Arabia-based asset manager SNB Capital raised SAR 1.7 mn from the initial public offering of its Global Megatrends Fund, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alahlicapital.com\/Pages\/NewsDetails.aspx?NewsID=800\">statement<\/a>. The offering closed on 18 December, with the fund kicking off operations the following day. The fund will facilitate investments focused on sectors including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/press-release\/companies-news\/snb-capitals-first-global-megatrends-fund-launches-to-provide-access-to-future-focused-investments-klwm54i1\">electric vehicles and renewable energy projects<\/a> for retail and institutional investors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Oman inks hydrogen-focused agreements with the IEA: <\/strong>Paris-based International Energy Agency will support Oman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e806e16c-672f-4775-8776-6f597297731a\">hydrogen production strategy<\/a> for 2050 through three projects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.addustour.com\/articles\/1321221-%D8%AB%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AB%D8%A9-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%B9-%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%83%D8%A9-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D9%8A%D9%86-%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%B7%D9%86%D8%A9-%D8%B9%D9%8F%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88%C2%AB%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%80%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%B7%D8%A7%D9%82%D9%80%D8%A9%C2%BB\">Ad-Dustour<\/a> reported. One project will focus on transitioning oil-intensive industries in the country to clean energy sources, another project will address upgrading the Sultanate\u2019s pre-existing natural gas infrastructure to turbocharge green hydrogen production, and the final project will develop a simulation system to help calculate the capital required for Oman\u2019s hydrogen production targets through to 2050 in relation to the country\u2019s GDP figures. No timelines or financial details for the projects were disclosed.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE DANGER ZONE- Iraq needs mns to combat desertification: <\/strong>Iraq is seeking to raise international aid to the tune of USD 100 mn to launch reforestation efforts and bolster food security, according to an Environment Ministry statement picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elbalad.news\/5583721\">Sada El Balad<\/a>. Nearly 70% of the country\u2019s land mass is under threat of climate-induced desertification. Iraq will need some USD 233 bn additional investment by 2040 to pursue its green growth path, we wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/12\/4022.pdf\">last month<\/a> citing a World Bank report. Under the re-tendering process, the projects will be split into four smaller combined cycle power projects with a 1.8 GW capacity each. Developers that have already qualified for the Taiba and Qassim IPPs will automatically qualify to bid for the new projects, while other interested developers can submit qualification documents, the SPCC website notes.
