It expects to achieve financial close for the project early in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Saudi-Korean JV Fuel Cell Innovations wants to invest USD 115 mn in hydrogen<\/strong><strong> fuel cell production by 2027. <\/strong>The company recently announced that it would construct a new gigafactory in Pohang, targeting the production of 1 GW-worth of fuel cells every year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-06\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- Saudi Arabia is interested in participating in the<\/strong><strong> export of <\/strong><strong>green electricity from Azerbaijan to Europe<\/strong>, Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al Falih said at the joint commission on cooperation between the two countries in Baku yesterday, Azerbaijani news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/menafn.com\/1105326612\/Saudi-Arabia-Eyes-Joining-Agreement-On-Azerbaijans-Export-Of-Green-Electricity\">Trend<\/a> reported. The leaders of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Hungary, and Romania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/12\/17\/hungary-romania-georgia-azerbaijan-agree-to-black-sea-electricity-project\">signed an agreement<\/a> on Saturday in Romania\u2019s Bucharest to build an underwater electric cable that would go under the Black Sea, marking \u201ca step towards creating a corridor for green energy,\u201d according to Azerbaijan\u2019s President Ilham Aliyev.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KSA already has a foot in the door in Azerbaijan \u2014 but it wants more:<\/strong> Saudi\u2019s Acwa Power is currently developing a <a href=\"https:\/\/acwapower.com\/en\/projects\/azerbaijan-wind-ipp\/\">240 MW wind farm<\/a> in Azerbaijan, with reported investment of USD 300 mn \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-technology.com\/news\/acwa-power-azerbaijan\/\">said to be<\/a> the \u201cfirst and largest foreign investment\u201d in the country\u2019s renewable energy sector. \u201cHowever, this is not enough,\u201d Al Falih was noted as saying yesterday. \u201cWe would like to implement larger energy projects and join the agreement signed a few days ago by Azerbaijan on the export of electricity to Europe,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong> <strong>Guterres wants a <\/strong> <strong>\u201cno-nonsense\u201d climate summit next fall: <\/strong>UN Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres intends to hold a \u201cclimate ambition summit\u201d in September 2023 to spur more urgent, tangible action on climate change from government, business and civil society leaders, he announced yesterday. cell<\/a><\/strong><strong> components<\/strong> at a plant in Korea\u2019s Pohang Blue Valley <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investkorea.org\/ik-en\/bbs\/i-884\/detail.do?ntt_sn=468641\">National Industrial Complex<\/a>, Korean daily the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreaherald.com\/view.php?ud=20221219000532\">Korea Herald<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The company recently announced that it would construct a new \u201cgigafactory\u201d in Pohang, <\/strong><strong>targeting the production of 1 GW-worth of fuel cells every year<\/strong>, the Korea Herald noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s researching the development of hydrogen fuel cells:<\/strong> FCI is conducting research into multiple kinds of fuel cells, including fuel cells powered by green hydrogen, captured CO2, and ammonia, according to the Korea Herald. In October, FCI received production approval to manufacture commercial hydrogen products from the state-owned Korea Gas Safety Corporation, it added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is part of a larger plan to diversify its products and up its use of clean energy:<\/strong> In July, FCI signed an agreement with Korean refinery S-Oil to develop hydrogen, fuel cells and renewable energy \u2014 with plans that include carbon capture, recycling, and developing the technology to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/solid-oxide-fuel-cells\">solid fuel oxide cells (SOFCs)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>SOFCs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cummins.com\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/energy-iq-what-solid-oxide-fuel-cell-and-how-fuel-cells-work\">often powered<\/a> by hydrocarbons, including natural gas and methane \u2014 but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1464285999800017\">are considered<\/a> a high-efficiency, low-emissions alternative to energy sources like coal. FCI currently produces SOFCs and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molten_carbonate_fuel_cell\">molten carbonate fuel cells<\/a> \u2014 high temperature fuel cells that generally run on hydrocarbons, the Korea Herald noted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One immediate priority for FCI is to produce high-efficiency SOFCs to power buildings <\/strong><strong>and ships:<\/strong> The company intends to launch 45 kW SOFCs in early 2023, to be used in mid-sized and large buildings. In early December, FCI opened a facility in Korea\u2019s Daejeon that can produce 3 MW-worth of 1.5 KW SOFCs per year, to power buildings and houses, the Korea Herald noted. The company is also reportedly developing \u201chigh capacity\u201d fuel cells for ships by 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FCI plans to set up a KSA HQ in 2023 and a green hydrogen plant at some point:<\/strong> FCI intends to launch its Saudi headquarters in Riyadh in 2023, as part of its KSA and South Korea-focused expansion plans in the coming years, the Korea Herald noted. The company also intends to build a green hydrogen plant in KSA, although there are no details available on the planned timeframe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So far, its work in KSA has been in supplying products to strategic sectors: <\/strong>FCI has reportedly been working with its Saudi partner organization Taqnia Energy to provide fuel cell products to electric, telecoms and military facilities in the country, according to the Korea Herald.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background on FCI:<\/strong> The JV was launched in 2018 to supply products to MENA and Korea. The body sheet will be used on Nissan\u2019s car doors and bonnets. The financials of the agreement and amounts of aluminum to be supplied were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nissan is not the first automaker to partner with EGA: <\/strong>BMW Group was the first company to <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ega.ae\/bmw-group-becomes-first-customer-for-egas-celestial-aluminium-made-with-solar-power\/\">sign an agreement<\/a>with EGA in 2021 for 43k tons of solar-produced aluminum per year and Mercedes-Benz parts-manufacturer Hammerer Aluminum Industries <a href=\"https:\/\/media.ega.ae\/ega-to-supply-celestial-solar-aluminium-to-parts-maker-hammerer-aluminum-industries-tier-1-supplier-of-a-premium-car-manufacturer\/\">followed suit in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How is the aluminum green?<\/strong> EGA signed an agreement with Dubai\u2019s Water and Electricity Authority (DEWA) in 2021 \u2014 the first of its kind worldwide \u2014 to supply solar energy to power EGA\u2019s CelestiAL aluminum production, according to a 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dewa.gov.ae\/en\/about-us\/media-publications\/latest-news\/2021\/01\/ega-and-dewa-join-hands\">DEWA<\/a> statement. The once-in-a-decade agreement, which was signed by some 196 countries, has been four years in the making and vows to protect 30% of the planet\u2019s oceans and lands by 2030 under the tagline 30x30.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The talks have been led by Canada and China: <\/strong>China, which has been leading the talks at COP15, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/cop15-biodiversity-united-nations-china-proposal\/\">presented<\/a> a compromise package on Sunday. The package included a draft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/c\/7a5e\/1d9a\/f8718d1a5dd9828dba764053\/cop-15-item9a-nonpaper-president-en.pdf\">Global Biodiversity Framework<\/a>, a draft strategy on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/c\/4d8b\/4cef\/258a45c97d56330b7e2c2385\/cop-15-non-paper-item12a-president-en.pdf\">resource mobilization<\/a> for nature conservation finance, frameworks for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/c\/d866\/f37d\/6a0eaddb5f02367802d70eda\/cop-15-item9b-nonpaper-president-en.pdf\">monitoring<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/c\/8db9\/0860\/126c4ac0a42dba3b63315051\/cop-15-item14-non-paper-president-en.pdf\">reporting<\/a> that allow countries to track their progress, and finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/doc\/c\/2bca\/4048\/185090029ec4447e3ba96133\/cop-15-item13a-nonpaper-president-en.pdf\">measures<\/a> to enhance capacity building, development, and technical and scientific cooperation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the Montreal-Kunming pact include? <\/strong>The agreement, which replaces the 2010 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/sp\/targets\/\">Aichi Biodiversity Targets<\/a> that emerged from COP10 in Nagoya, Japan, includes 23 targets. The agreement proposes the elimination, phasing out, or reform of environmentally harmful subsidies by a minimum of USD 500 bn each year by 2030 and would see wealthy countries increasing their contributions to aid for biodiversity. It also requests, but does not require, that large companies and financial institutions make disclosures about their operations, supply chains and portfolios, reports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/cop15-president-says-global-nature-deal-passed-despite-congo-objection-2022-12-19\/\">Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finance remains a sticking point: <\/strong>While the agreement would see wealthy countries increasing their contributions to aid for biodiversity to USD 25 bn annually starting 2025 and USD 30 bn annually by 2030, it falls short of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-14\/delegates-walk-out-of-key-cop15-biodiversity-funding-talks#xj4y7vzkg\">an earlier proposal<\/a> that saw developed countries committing at least USD 100 bn annually until 2030. It also directs countries to allocate USD 200 bn annually for public and private sector biodiversity initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Calls for a new biodiversity fund were shut down:<\/strong> Rather than set up an entirely new fund to protect biodiversity, which has been a repeated request of countries from the global south, including Brazil, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the pact sees the creation of a biodiversity fund under the World Bank\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegef.org\/\">Global Environment Facility<\/a> (GEF) \u2014 a conclusion that outraged many African delegates, with one representative saying that \u201cthe agreement was passed by force of hand,\u201d reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/cop15-president-says-global-nature-deal-passed-despite-congo-objection-2022-12-19\/\">the Guardian<\/a>. Earlier this week, talks <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4b358330-736e-4054-b342-4e050f0711c6\">stalled<\/a> after delegates failed to reach a consensus on biodiversity funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is not included in the proposal? <\/strong>The package excludes the EU\u2019s proposal to restore 3 bn hectares of degraded land and freshwater ecosystems and 3 bn hectares of ocean ecosystems, as well as the bloc\u2019s proposal to halve pesticide use and risk. These nine facilities would, if implemented, cost a combined USD 83 bn and would collectively produce up to 7.6 mn tons of green ammonia and 2.7 mn tons of hydrogen a year when fully operational.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But Oman outlined a strong plan for green hydrogen production:<\/strong> The country\u2019s strategy for the energy source includes an increase in investment in green hydrogen to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e806e16c-672f-4775-8776-6f597297731a\">USD 140 bn by 2050<\/a> including investment in 300 mn solar panels, 10k wind turbines, 5.2k electrolyzers, and hydrogen storage, transport, and desalination. Oman is targeting annual production of 1-1.25 mn metric tons of green hydrogen by 2030, rising to 3.25-3.75 mn metric tons by 2040, and 7.5-8.5 mn metric tons by 2050.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oman sealed agreements amounting to <\/strong><strong>USD 48.9 bn already<\/strong><strong> \u2014 putting it second only to Egypt in MENA<\/strong> in terms of the value of signed project agreements, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e9569d88-5e15-464f-a2f4-341bbb306057\">MEED project tracker data<\/a> released in October. Most notably, Saudi\u2019s Acwa Power and US-based Air Products teamed up with government-owned OQ Alternative Energy back in May on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acwapower.com\/news\/acwa-power-oq-and-air-products-sign-joint-development-agreement-toward-world-scale-green-hydrogen-based-ammonia-production-facility-in-oman\/\">multi-bn USD<\/a>\u201d green hydrogen project in Oman\u2019s Salalah Freezone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Saudi Arabia also had a big green hydrogen year: <\/strong>KSA\u2019s Neom Hydrogen company signed facility agreements with Saudi and international banks, and submitted a letter of intent to the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF) to secure the operating capital for Neom\u2019s USD 5 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/acwapower.com\/en\/projects\/neom-green-hydrogen-project\/\">green hydrogen project<\/a> just this week (as we note in Green Hydrogen, above). The plant promises to be the world\u2019s largest utility-scale green hydrogen facility, producing 1.2 mn tons of green ammonia annually. KSA\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF) also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/21ce193c-0194-41cf-b695-c6667585bcb6\">inked an agreement<\/a> last month worth some USD 6.5 bn with Korea Electric Power Corp (Kepco) and four other South Korean firms to build a hydrogen and ammonia plant with a yearly generational capacity of 1.2 mn tons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s not forget KSA\u2019s blue ammonia: <\/strong>Saudi Aramco and Sabic Agri-Nutrients shipped the world\u2019s first commercial load containing <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cc2bd5c8-79fc-4993-8806-6cac0e90c6fc\">25k tons of blue ammonia<\/a> to South Korea last month, and Saudi mining company Maaden is also expected to export a similar shipment of blue ammonia to the East Asian country <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52d7d80d-2f55-4f68-b98a-891bce9b5324\">by the end of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And its expansion on hydrogen capacity abroad: <\/strong>KSA\u2019s Acwa Power has been investing heavily in a southeast Asian expansion and will establish a USD 7 bn green hydrogen and derivatives production project <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/61525d65-123b-493b-b8d6-ed7866b82314\">in Thailand<\/a>, targeting the production of 225k tons of green hydrogen annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Emirates also wants to become a major exporter: <\/strong>The country sent its first low-carbon ammonia shipment to Europe <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/268bfc3b-f341-49a6-aa57-90857030b5ff\">back in September<\/a>, and has its sights set on exporting 25% of global low-carbon hydrogen export markets and has seven projects in the pipeline. UAE\u2019s Adnoc is currently developing a low-carbon ammonia plant that will produce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adnoc.ae\/en\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2022\/adnoc-sends-first-low-carbon-ammonia-shipment-from-the-uae-to-germany\">1 mn tons per year<\/a> at its industrial services and logistics hub in the Ruwais Industrial Complex.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Qatar is also going big on hydrogen production<\/strong>: QatarEnergy\u2019s renewables arm signed agreements yesterday to build the world\u2019s largest blue ammonia plant, with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/cc2bd5c8-79fc-4993-8806-6cac0e90c6fc\">a USD 1 bn price tag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Last but not least, Morocco: <\/strong>The country received <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b45de912-e322-4b2a-bf2b-88d4e1060db4\">EUR 38 mn from Germany<\/a> to finance its first green hydrogen plant and the private sector is interested in the country\u2019s potential as well, with Indian conglomerate Adani Group eyeing investments in renewables projects with a 10 GW capacity to supply green ammonia to Europe.
