Details about the capacity of the project and its timeline were not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>Direct air capture refers to extracting CO2 from the air for storage or reuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes amid lots of green mobility talk in KSA: <\/strong>The Kingdom has also initiated eight pilot projects to test the use of hydrogen in mobility, Al Ghareeb said. The aim is to power Saudi Arabia\u2019s first hydrogen-powered train and build four refilling stations by the end of next year. Additionally, the country wants to use hydrogen in heavy-duty vehicles, establish a sustainable aviation fuel project, and use hydrogen in airports for ground services.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Masdar is eyeing the PACE partnership: <\/strong>Emirati renewables firm <a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/\">Masdar<\/a> is looking to participate in the US-UAE USD 100 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/745b1f96-7d6a-4e59-85ba-935e7e6affa8\">Partnership for Accelerating Clean Energy (PACE)<\/a>, which aims to develop 100 GW of clean energy projects globally by 2035, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/electric-power\/121622-interview-uaes-masdar-may-take-part-in-100-gw-us-uae-partnership\">S&P Global Commodity Insights<\/a> reports. The company \u2014 which itself is looking to develop 100 GW of renewable energy by 2030 \u2014 is already in discussions about developing and investing in renewable energy projects in the US, Executive Director of Clean Energy Fawwaz Al Muharrami said, without providing further details. Signed in November, PACE aims to boost green financing in both countries and channel investment to emerging economies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Japan\u2019s <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idemitsu.com\/en\/\">Idemitsu Kosan<\/a><\/strong><strong> is looking to import ammonia from the <\/strong><strong>UAE<\/strong>, President and CEO Shunichi Kito told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/commodityinsights\/en\/market-insights\/latest-news\/energy-transition\/121522-interview-idemitsu-targets-late-2020s-for-ammonia-imports-from-uae-saudi-arabia-ceo\">S&P Global Commodity Insights<\/a>. Idemitsu \u2014 currently the second-largest refinery in Japan \u2014 is also looking to decarbonize the Shunan complex by 2030 by substituting coal with blue ammonia from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, Kito said. Idemitsu is also testing black pellets \u2014 made of acacia wood residues and sawdust \u2014 as a green fuel source.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The EU <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_22_7796\">agreed<\/a><\/strong><strong> to overhaul <\/strong><strong>its carbon market in a landmark climate policy boost yesterday.<\/strong> After a 29-hour negotiation, the bloc also upped the speed at which power producers and steelmakers need to decarbonize, in a bid to cut emissions by 62% from 2005 levels by 2030. The story made headlines in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-18\/europe-reaches-deal-to-bolster-carbon-market-in-green-deal-push?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/eu-reaches-agreement-pivotal-carbon-market-deal-czech-eu-presidency-2022-12-18\/\">Reuters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/12\/18\/climate-change-eu-carbon\">Euronews<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/12\/18\/european-union-reaches-agreement-on-pivotal-carbon-market-deal.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Barclays upped its sustainable finance goal to USD 1 tn by 2030 from its initial<\/strong> <strong>plan of USD 150 bn by 2025<\/strong>, the UK investment bank\u2019s head of sustainable investment told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/barclays-turbocharges-2030-sustainable-finance-target-1-trln-2022-12-14\/\">Reuters<\/a>. Barclays\u2019 new target will cover everything from affordable housing and green mortgages to renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MEANWHILE- <\/strong><strong>More money<\/strong><strong> is needed for the IMF\u2019s new Resilience and Sustainability<\/strong><strong> Trust (RST)<\/strong> to avoid some 66% of CO2 emissions coming from developing economies by 2030, IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international-news\/20221213-more-financing-needed-for-imf-climate-change-fund-director\">told AFP<\/a> last week. Speaking on the sidelines of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Topics\/Resilience-and-Sustainability-Trust\">a panel discussion<\/a> on the RST in Washington, Georgieva noted that the fund has some USD 40 bn worth of commitments, but that this is \u201cnothing in comparison with the needs.\u201d The IMF expects countries to step up with resources \u201cso we don\u2019t end up having to ration support for countries,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A recap on the RST: <\/strong>The trust was set up to provide general fiscal resilience, but contains special provisions for climate, with the financing currently under discussion, as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/22d4a955-7c97-4dfa-8f6b-ada43e3ad760\">we noted<\/a> previously. Delegates from almost 70 developing countries \u2014 mostly from Africa and Latin America \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eco-business.com\/news\/developing-nations-halt-cop15-talks-after-biodiversity-fund-demand\/\">walked out of talks<\/a> last week as their calls for a new biodiversity fund were unmet. An earlier proposal saw developed countries committing at least USD 100 bn annually to biodiversity until 2030.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who funds biodiversity protection? <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegef.org\/\">The Global Environment Facility<\/a> (GEF) \u2014 set up as a pilot program by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwi-0J_ck4P8AhUJU3IKHfBkD4QYABAAGgJxdQ&ei=ngWfY4X0O47maejWhZgO&sig=AOD64_0zHZVOpoqQXlEtam8NlNGbDIU0LA&q&sqi=2&adurl&ved=2ahUKEwiFu5Tck4P8AhUOcxoKHWhrAeMQ0Qx6BAgLEAE\">World Bank<\/a> in 1991 \u2014 is the main funder of biodiversity protection, providing around USD 25 bn in grants to finance biodiversity since it was founded.
