We were sad to see them walk off the pitch yesterday, but congratulate the Atlas Lions for making history as the first Arab and African team to ever make it this far in the championship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Back to our regularly scheduled programming: It\u2019s quite a busy news day<\/strong> on the climate front, so let\u2019s jump right in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY in our corner of the world: The UAE is looking to build its first <\/strong><strong>waste-to-hydrogen plant<\/strong>, courtesy of Bee\u2019ah, Chinook Sciences and Japanese gas conglomerate Air Water. The plant will be MENA\u2019s first facility of its kind, producing 18k of the fuel per day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amea Power is making its debut in South Africa: <\/strong>UAE\u2019s Amea Power will build a USD 120 mn solar energy plant in South Africa, with a capacity of 120 MW. This is the company\u2019s first project in the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Sungrow Power Supply and Acwa Power signed an agreement to build a 536 MW<\/strong><strong> battery storage system in Neom.<\/strong> The MoU was one of several signed during the China-Arab Summit hosted in KSA last Friday.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY GLOBALLY- HSBC will stop providing financing <\/strong><strong>to new oil and gas fields<\/strong>, multiple news outlets reported yesterday. The bank will no longer fund oil and projects approved after the end of last year. It will, however, finance energy companies that are looking to shift to cleaner energy sources. \u201cCovering everything from biomass projects to hydrogen, nuclear and thermal coal, the policy was aimed at driving progress across regions with different energy systems,\u201d HSBC CSO Celine Herweijer told Reuters. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/hsbc-stop-funding-new-oil-gas-fields-part-policy-overhaul-2022-12-14\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-14\/hsbc-halts-finance-for-new-oil-and-gas-fields-in-climate-change-move?srnd=green&sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/federal-reserve-meeting-interest-rate-hike-december-2022\/card\/hsbc-pledges-no-new-loans-for-oil-and-gas-fields-D7Nn0YYpHH59glgwdIuc\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5ba4b75f-bbd8-4b3d-b962-60126754e2fa\">Financial Times<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>HSBC will continue to finance existing oil and gas fields as part of vision to help manage down hydrocarbon supply<\/strong>, Reuters quotes Herweijer as saying: \u201cIt\u2019s not no new fossil fuel investment as of tomorrow. The existing fossil fuel energy system needs to exist hand-in-hand with the growing clean energy system,\u201d she said. It will also continue to provide investment banking services to the industry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- HSBC was the second-largest European lender to oil and gas companies <\/strong>in the period since the Paris climate agreement was inked in 2015, deploying more than USD 110 bn, Bloomberg notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong> HSBC is looking to hit net zero carbon emissions as a bank by 2030 and make its portfolio net zero by 2050, HSBC Egypt CEO and Deputy Chair Todd Wilcox told <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/2022\/06\/02\/182610\/\">EnterpriseAM<\/a> previously.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- <\/strong><strong>HSBC-backed investment manager raises USD 650 mn to invest in<\/strong><strong> nature-focused <\/strong><strong>projects:<\/strong> UK-based \u201cnatural capital\u201d investment manager <a href=\"https:\/\/climateassetmanagement.com\/\">Climate Asset Management (CAM)<\/a> has closed over USD 650 mn in funding from institutional investors and corporates for investment in green projects, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/climate-asset-management-raises-650-mln-invest-nature-projects-2022-12-13\/\">Reuters<\/a>. Part of the fund will go into regenerative agriculture and forestry projects in developed markets through its <a href=\"https:\/\/climateassetmanagement.com\/investment-strategies\/#natural-capital-fund\">Natural Capital Fund<\/a>, targeting a 10% return before fees. It may also sell carbon and biodiversity credits. The other part will invest in nature-based carbon projects in developing economies, for which investors will receive carbon credits instead of financial returns, Reuters notes. CAM was established as a joint venture between HSBC Asset Management and climate change advisory firm Pollination Group.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- NASA is delivering the world\u2019s first global water survey <\/strong><strong>from space: <\/strong>A NASA-led international advanced satellite mission \u2014 dubbed SWOT (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) \u2014 will collect detailed data measurements from the earth\u2019s oceans, lakes, and rivers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/science\/nasa-conduct-first-global-water-survey-space-2022-12-13\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The data will enhance ocean-circulation models, help predict weather and climate forecasts and patterns, and aid in managing water scarcity in drought-stricken areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why this is important: <\/strong>A major objective of the mission is to help climate scientists better understand the natural process by which oceans \u2014 estimated to have absorbed over 90% of the excess heat trapped in Earth\u2019s atmosphere \u2014 absorb atmospheric heat and carbon dioxide to moderate global temperatures and climate change. This information will help determine the turning point at which oceans will start releasing heat back into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming rather than mitigate it, a SWOT scientist tells the newswire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Morocco is setting up its green action plan:<\/strong> Morocco\u2019s government is planning to rework regulatory frameworks to encourage more private sector investment in the country\u2019s renewable energy industry, Energy Transition Minister Leila bin Ali said on Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/alyaoum24.com\/1752910.html\">Al Yaoum 24<\/a> reported. The government is also looking to expedite projects already in the pipeline that will produce some 4.6 GW of renewable energy and is separately working on a roadmap for energy generation from biomass and waste water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- With nearly a year to go, the activist set is turning its sights on COP28, with carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) tech in one group\u2019s sights. <\/strong>NGO Carbon Market Watch is complaining that CCUS was too prominent in talks at COP27 and is warning against increased use of the term in EU and UN climate policies, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news\/2400294-ngo-warns-on-carbon-removals-focus?backToResults=true\">Argus Media<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE has a \u201cdeep interest\u201d in CCUS<\/strong>, the group says (no surprise there), arguing that carbon capture comes with risks and is often not tied to clear emission-reduction targets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES-<\/strong> <strong>Green steel <\/strong><strong>is gaining momentum in<\/strong><strong> MENA:<\/strong> Creating low-emission steel production and supply chains was front and center during discussions at the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.fastmarkets.com\/event\/6484f264-2c3d-415d-9049-461d13e41e0a\">Middle East Iron and Steel Conference<\/a> in Dubai earlier this week. The proposed timeframe for the project was not disclosed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fuel cell grade green hydrogen will be used to power vehicles: <\/strong>The green hydrogen produced by the planned waste-to-hydrogen plant will be produced to specific international standards that will allow it to be used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/proton-exchange-membrane-fuel-cells\">PEM fuel cells<\/a> \u2014 which are being developed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/beeahgroup\/status\/1500826163006091267?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1500826163006091267%7Ctwgr%5E13fbac433b9c94d268c9df7838e4c98b4c71e611%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fgulfbusiness.com%2Fdevelopment-to-begin-on-the-regions-first-waste-to-hydrogen-plant-in-the-uae%2F\">primarily for a fleet of large trucks and buses<\/a> \u2014 the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will it work?<\/strong> The plan is to convert non-recyclable waste wood and plastic to fuel-cell grade green hydrogen using Chinook Sciences\u2019 patented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590174520300155#:~:text=Abstract,carbon%20and%20no%20CO2.\">pyrolysis process<\/a> \u2014 where hydrogen is produced through the decomposition of methane \u2014 and Air Water\u2019s hydrogen refinement technology, the statement says. Syngas \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/biofuel.org.uk\/index.php?p=what-is-syngas\">synthetic gas<\/a> containing hydrogen, CO2, and carbon monoxide \u2014 will be produced by the pyrolysis and gasification process, then funneled into the hydrogen refinement system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens to the carbon? <\/strong>Chinook\u2019s technology produces what it calls \u201chigh performance\u201d activated carbon, a solid form of carbon that is used in applications including filtering drinking water, the food and beverage, and pollution abatement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The plant has been in the works since last year:<\/strong> Bee\u2019ah Group and Chinook Sciences announced plans to establish the Sharjah waste-to-hydrogen plant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeahgroup.com\/beeah-and-chinook-sciences-announces-regions-first-waste-to-hydrogen-project\/\">in May 2021<\/a>, when senior officials signed an agreement outlining the terms of their partnership. We\u2019ve been unable to obtain any information about the company or its ownership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s not all:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/04\/03\/scatec-inks-ain-sokhna-green-hydrogen-pact-with-sfe-and-oc-68181\/\">100 MW green hydrogen plant<\/a> being developed by Fertiglobe, Scatec and Orascom Construction also received a license from ministers yesterday. The companies last month <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/09\/fertiglobe-commissions-100-mw-plant-kicking-off-a-big-day-for-green-hydrogen-in-egypt-86670\/\">began commissioning<\/a> the first phase of the USD 135 mn plant and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/16\/egypt-signs-framework-agreements-for-green-hydrogen-ammonia-plants-worth-usd-83-bn-87840\/\">signed a framework agreement<\/a> at COP27. The facility will produce up to 15k tons of green hydrogen a year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Part of Egypt\u2019s push to become a regional hub for green energy:<\/strong> The government signed<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/16\/egypt-signs-framework-agreements-for-green-hydrogen-ammonia-plants-worth-usd-83-bn-87840\/\">nine framework agreements<\/a> during COP27 with foreign companies to construct several green hydrogen and ammonia facilities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
