We look forward to welcoming many more of you at our slate of Enterprise X Forums coming up in 2023.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong><strong>UAE-based retail giant Majid Al Futtaim has raised a USD 1.25 <\/strong><strong>bn <\/strong><strong>sustainability-linked loan to make its malls more LEED-friendly<\/strong> <strong>and cut emissions<\/strong>. This is the company\u2019s second second sustainability-linked loan and will be linked to sustainability performance targets set by the company through a revolving credit facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- The Sharjah waste-to-energy plant is getting new operators: <\/strong>A JV between Emirati waste management company Bee\u2019ah, UAE renewable energy company Masdar, and French resource management firm Veolia Middle East will operate and maintain the Sharjah waste-to-energy plant for 25 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- The UK\u2019s dysfunctional politics is holding back efforts to bring <\/strong><strong>more clean electricity into the country:<\/strong> The GBP 18 bn project to link the UK grid to 10.5 GW of solar and wind plants in Morocco has been delayed by at least another year thanks to political instability in London, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2022\/dec\/04\/government-chaos-delays-uk-sahara-energy-link\">the Guardian<\/a> reports. Project developer <a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/\">Xlinks<\/a> had hoped that the project would start generating power in 2017 but frequent changes in the British government has made reaching a financing agreement through public subsidies difficult.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Xlinks could look elsewhere: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/\">Xlinks<\/a> executive chair Dave Lewis <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/23cad848-c456-4d92-9aab-718df4452c82\">said last month that talks<\/a> with the UK had been \u201cfrustratingly slow\u201d and that other buyers may be on the table if the UK doesn\u2019t get its house in order. The company was expecting an assurance next year that UK consumers will pay GBP 48 per MWh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REFRESHER- <\/strong>The Xlinks renewable energy project in Morocco is set to generate 10.5 GW of solar and wind energy and install 20 GWh of on-site battery storage by 2030. When complete, the project will supply 8% of the UK\u2019s energy needs via a 3.6 GW subsea interconnector.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Green hydrogen, courtesy of BP \u2014 coming to MENA <\/strong><strong>soon?<\/strong> British energy company BP is exploring green hydrogen production in Oman and Mauritania, BP sources told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/bp-doubles-down-hydrogen-fuel-future-2022-12-05\/\">Reuters<\/a>. This comes as the company is betting on hydrogen as the fuel of the future, with investments expected to reach USD hundreds of mns by 2030 globally, the newswire added. Aside from assembling a 150-person strong hydrogen division, the company is also planning to set up a \u201clow carbon\u201d green hydrogen center in the US, BP head of hydrogen in the US Tomeka McLeod told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Morocco will put into action a new strategy to develop electric <\/strong><strong>transportation in 2023<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afrik21.africa\/en\/morocco-onee-is-preparing-the-national-master-plan-for-electric-mobility\/\">Afrik21<\/a> reported yesterday. The plan aims to establish a regulatory framework for producing and distributing electricity for net-zero transportation, said sales and marketing director of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water Elamine Fechtali. The Kingdom has been working diligently to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b8fcdc83-8e58-408a-b99b-ba9a69e3e63a\">lower its emissions<\/a>, ramp up <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/54a65045-7742-485b-befc-efb0ce22c5e3\">investments for renewable energy<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/761e8bf1-981e-4621-9635-89883897a9e5\">advancing green mobility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Biden\u2019s climate bill is stoking <\/strong><strong>US-EU trade tensions: <\/strong>Tension between the US and EU over the impact of US President Joe Biden\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">USD 430 bn Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)<\/a> on EU industrial players has been drawing coverage in the international press. This is the company\u2019s second second SLL and will be linked to sustainability performance targets set by the company through a revolving credit facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advisors: <\/strong>First Abu Dhabi Bank led the transaction and acted as the company's sustainability coordinator and agent for the SLL.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where\u2019s the money going? <\/strong>MAF will use the loan to implement measures to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/scope-1-and-scope-2-inventory-guidance\">Scope 1<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/scope-1-and-scope-2-inventory-guidance\">and Scope 2 emissions<\/a> and achieve LEED certification standards across all its malls. statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the plant: <\/strong>The WtE facility is currently owned by the Emirates Waste to Energy Company (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeahgroup.com\/services\/beeah-energy\/#:~:text=Emirates%20Waste%20to%20Energy%20Company&text=The%20company%20is%20currently%20building,powering%20up%20to%2028%2C000%20homes.\">EWTE<\/a>), a JV between Bee\u2019ah and Masdar. It can process some 300k tons of municipal waste per year, resulting in a 30 MW production capacity \u2014 which will be fed directly into Sharjah\u2019s electricity grid, Masdar notes <a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/Masdar-Clean-Energy\/Projects\/Sharjah-Waste-to-Energy-Project#:~:text=The%20facility%20will%20process%20more,where%20necessary%2C%20sent%20to%20land%EF%AC%81lls.\">on its website<\/a>. This energy could power up to 28k homes and offset roughly 450k tons of carbon emissions every year, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waste from Bee\u2019ah\u2019s waste management complex will serve as feedstock: <\/strong>Non-recoverable waste from Bee\u2019ah\u2019s integrated waste management complex will be thermally treated, with the heat generated then used to produce electricity. By converting non-recoverable waste to energy, the plant will help increase Sharjah\u2019s landfill waste diversion rate to 100% from its current 76% \u2014 making it the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covanta.com\/how-we-can-help\/solutions\/zero-waste-to-landfill\">zero waste-to-landfill<\/a> city in MENA, the statement claims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve seen Bee\u2019ah up its WtE game lately:<\/strong> Bee\u2019ah subsidiary Bee\u2019ah Recycling recently added a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/94264c12-ac27-418f-b516-8608c300f6ce\">new solid recovered fuel processing facility<\/a> to its integrated waste management complex, which can produce some 85k tons of green fuel annually \u2014 most of which will be sold to Sharjah Cement to power its factories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regionally, WtE is picking up interest: <\/strong>A WtE project that could convert some 1.2k tons of municipal solid waste per day to 30 MWh of electricity is being planned in Abu Rawash city, Egypt\u2019s Environment Ministry said in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4b090702-baa7-4652-8b96-5f7c7d286520\">a recent statement<\/a>. Egypt\u2019s Suez Cement is investing USD 25 mn in plans to generate <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/af61bbd1-13d9-46c6-8c4b-4da56065fd49\">some 20 MW of power<\/a> from the waste heat recovery facility at its Helwan plant. The process \u2014 which could potentially remove 3 bn metric tons of carbon annually \u2014 has drawn interest from investors who would have shunned the project a decade ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong>Algae converts carbon dioxide into biomass and oxygen using photosynthesis \u2014 but it does that at a faster rate than trees because it grows faster and covers a larger surface area, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1718988\/algae-might-be-a-secret-weapon-to-combatting-climate-change\">QZ<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And what does Brilliant Planet do exactly? <\/strong>The startup takes algae from the sea and \u201cfeeds\u201d it with nutrient-rich ocean water, making the algae grow faster. After the algae grows enough to fill 16 ponds \u2014 filled with 3 mn gallons of water each \u2014 large-scale photosynthesis and carbon capturing takes place. The blooms are harvested, dried in the sun and buried under the ground to be stored.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond Morocco: <\/strong>Brilliant Planet has identified almost 300k sq miles of flat desert lands near windy coasts globally for their algae pools \u2014 which, combined, have the potential to remove 3 bn metric tons of carbon from the atmosphere each year. In 2021, emissions rose at 36.3 bn tons annually, their highest ever level, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/global-co2-emissions-rebounded-to-their-highest-level-in-history-in-2021\">according<\/a> to the International Energy Authority (IEA).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investors have shown interest: <\/strong>The company, which was founded in 2013 and has a patent that goes back over a decade, faltered in its first attempts to draw investors. But earlier this year, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usv.com\/writing\/2022\/04\/brilliant-planet\/\">received USD 26.7 mn<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usv.com\/\">Union Square Ventures<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/toyota.ventures\/\">Toyota Ventures<\/a>, among other unnamed investors. The company\u2019s model is much cheaper than direct-air capture, according to Union Square Ventures\u2019 Mona Alsubaei.
