We look forward to welcoming many more of you at our slate of Enterprise X Forums coming up in 2023.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- Oman\u2019s Jindal Shadeed Iron and Steel wants to invest USD 3<\/strong><strong> bn to build a green steel plant in Duqm\u2019s Special Economic Zone.<\/strong> The green hydrogen-powered plant is expected to yield 5 mn tons of steel for automotive products, wind turbines, and other goods.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- The UAE has executive regulations to make its construction sector greener. <\/strong>The cabinet approved regulations that are designed to lower carbon emissions in the sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong> No single story leads the global climate press today, but Germany\u2019s quest for a greener future got some ink. Germany is planning to draft climate protection contracts with companies in 2023 to rely on renewable energy sources, including hydrogen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/germany-set-up-climate-protection-contracts-with-industry-2023-minister-2022-12-04\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Details of the agreement are still unclear. Germany\u2019s Economy Minister Robert Habeck is also visiting Namibia and South Africa for five days to pursue hydrogen contracts and look at energy cooperation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-03\/germany-s-habeck-on-hunt-for-hydrogen-in-namibia-south-africa?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- The <\/strong><strong>IFC<\/strong><strong> will expand funding to renewables: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/corp_ext_content\/ifc_external_corporate_site\/home\">International Finance Corporation<\/a> will allocate 35% of its investments towards environmentally-friendly sectors including renewables in MENA and beyond, its head of regional operations for MENA Sufyan Al Issa told <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3FjJB4A\">Al Arabiya<\/a> last week. Egypt particularly holds significant potential \u2014 having just pledged <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3353d732-aa27-4d6d-95ba-2de58d5edd02\">USD 1.1 bn wind and solar projects<\/a> in the country from the IFC and others \u2014 as well as Jordan, Morocco and GCC countries.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Egypt\u2019s Electricity Ministry will start allocating land <\/strong><strong>for <\/strong><strong>the nine green hydrogen proj<\/strong><strong>ects signed at COP27 within the next few days<\/strong>, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker reportedly told local media outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3XTsKg3\">Al Mal<\/a>. The cabinet had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/12\/01\/cabinet-approves-exec-regs-on-the-water-resources-act-89827\/\">signed off<\/a> last week on agreements with international power companies to construct nine green hydrogen and ammonia facilities in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, which were <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/16\/egypt-signs-framework-agreements-for-green-hydrogen-ammonia-plants-worth-usd-83-bn-87840\/\">made during last month\u2019s climate summit<\/a> and could require as much as USD 83 bn to complete. The facilities would collectively produce up to 7.6 mn tons of green ammonia and 2.7 mn tons of hydrogen a year when fully operational.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CORRECTION-<\/strong> In our coverage of COP27, we incorrectly stated that the loss and damage fund COP27 delegates agreed to establish will see developed countries contributing USD 100 bn per year to support vulnerable countries. The size of the landmark fund has not been agreed upon. The facility \u2014 for which land has been allotted \u2014 will be powered by green hydrogen and is set to be completed by 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where is the money coming from?<\/strong> \u201cThe company, in due course, will evaluate the optimum mix of debt and equity to maximize shareholder value and minimize cost of capital,\u201d Shetty told Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where is the supply headed? <\/strong>The plant\u2019s output will be primarily geared towards export to the Middle East, Europe, and Japan, with some 30-40% earmarked for consumption in Oman and the wider GCC region. US President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ff91c07e-a238-456a-a654-f35ed0da7093\">recently doled out<\/a> USD 2.8 bn in grants for companies to domestically extract and process lithium, graphite and nickel, as part of his administration\u2019s EV production push.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just Saudi Arabia: <\/strong>Morocco has reserves of manganese, silver, copper, and cobalt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2022\/11\/352696\/morocco-to-supply-eu-with-critical-raw-materials-for-energy-transition\">currently being<\/a> explored. \u201cA vast, new and largely untapped minerals super-region is emerging, stretching from Africa to central Asia,\u201d Saudi Gazette quotes Al Mudaifer as saying. The Tethyan mineral belt \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worley.com\/our-thinking\/how-middle-east-can-become-world-center-of-energy-transition-minerals\">which traverses KSA<\/a> \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meed.com\/gulf-sits-on-trove-of-energy-transition-minerals\">likely to have<\/a> \u201cconsiderable deposits\u201d of copper, lithium, and other materials, with much of it \u201cunderexplored compared to mining zones in the Andes or Africa\u201d \u2014 often hailed as the world\u2019s metals and minerals hotspots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International players are already showing interest: <\/strong>Moroccan mining firm Managem <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/761e8bf1-981e-4621-9635-89883897a9e5\">agreed in June<\/a> to supply Renault with 5k tons of cobalt sulfate \u2014 to be used in EV production \u2014 for seven years starting in 2025. In Egypt, Australian mining firm Fortescue Future Industries <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/af478392-b4e6-45f5-912f-3d4445011463\">is reportedly eyeing<\/a> the extraction of rare earth minerals, including silica \u2014 used to produce solar panels. The EU recently announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/09b7560c-9386-4487-bd48-64df785583fe\">plans to sign<\/a> MoUs with Morocco and Algeria, as well as several other African countries, to procure raw materials for renewables projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And there\u2019s a strategic shift already underway: <\/strong>KSA intends to award over a dozen mining exploration licenses to international investors and attract some USD 32 bn in investment in its mining and mineral sector, Mining Minister Bandar Al Khorayef <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0f89aaa1-522d-4e62-bf5f-f6239fcb84a3\">said in November<\/a>.
