crossed the proverbial finish line for shipping out the world\u2019s first commercial load of blue ammonia, which is on its way to South Korea.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- <\/strong>Saudi\u2019s Creer is one step closer to their new EV manufacturing factory, having landed the space to build it \u2014 and energy giant Acwa Power is continuing its Asian expansion with a 1 GW solar project in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND- <\/strong>Rolls-Royce has been making international headlines for its groundbreaking tests for hydrogen fuel to power aircraft jets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is, in other words, this morning\u2019s edition is very KSA-heavy. <\/strong>We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-07\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- South Korea is wooing <\/strong><strong>Tesla with \u201ctailored\u201d incentives for its EV gigafactory<\/strong>, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/south-koreas-yoon-ready-offer-tailored-benefits-attract-tesla-gigafactory-2022-11-28\/\">Reuters<\/a>. In a virtual t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate with Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Yoon promised to minimize union-related \u201crisks\u201d in the country \u2014 a topic the Tesla boss feels strongly about. South Korea has a solid supply chain for EV manufacturing as well as the human resources and work culture to back it up, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-28\/tesla-tsla-and-south-korea-might-not-be-the-dream-pairing-it-seems?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> notes. Musk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/elon-musk-names-s-korea-among-top-candidates-ev-investment-yoons-office-2022-11-23\/\">named<\/a> South Korea as one of the top candidate locations for its EV gigafactory in a previous call with Yoon.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-05\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- Lekela is has appetite for more renewable <\/strong><strong>energy <\/strong><strong>projects in MENA and Africa: <\/strong>Independent power producer <a href=\"https:\/\/lekela.com\/\">Lekela<\/a> is exploring projects in Morocco, Tunisia and Kenya, CEO Chris Antonopoulos told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theafricareport.com\/263376\/lekela-considers-morocco-tunisia-and-kenya-renewable-power-expansion\/\">Africa Report<\/a> in an interview. <a href=\"https:\/\/lekela.com\/\">Lekela<\/a> is looking to expand its portfolio in Africa \u2014 with an eye to growing in Morocco, Tunisia and Kenya \u2014 in addition to its existing projects in South Africa, Senegal, Ghana and Egypt, Antonopoulos said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2022\/11\/352680\/lekela-power-considers-expansion-into-moroccos-wind-energy-market\">Morocco World News<\/a>. Lekela is majority-owned by private equity giant Actis.<\/p>\n<p><em>CORRECTION- This story was updated on 30 November 2022. <\/em><em>An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Lekela is owned by renewables player Infinity. Infinity and the Africa Finance Corporation have entered into a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/19\/infinity-will-become-africas-largest-renewables-player-through-lekela-acquisition-76096\/\">transaction<\/a> with\u00a0private equity firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.is\/\">Actis<\/a> (which owns 60% of Lekela) and Irish wind \/ solar developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainstreamrp.com\/projects\/\">Mainstream Renewable Power<\/a> (40%) to acquire 100% of Lekela. The companies shipped 25k tons of low-carbon blue ammonia to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lottefinechem.com\/en\/\">Lotte Fine Chemical<\/a> (LFC), with the shipment expected to arrive between 9 and 13 December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not the only shipment South Korea is expecting: <\/strong>Saudi mining company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maaden.com.sa\/\">Maaden<\/a> will also export 25k tons of blue ammonia to LFC by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/industry\/saudi-climate-pledge-key-announcements-from-sharm-el-sheikh-ukel9kbo\">end of the year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Aramco said it was earmarking \u201cmultiple bns of USD\u201d in a bid to establish itself as a major blue hydrogen exporter <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/909a2ca6-ec6c-4e78-a77f-380646c7fb18\">earlier this month<\/a>. CTO Ahmad Al Khowaiter said export discussions with Japan and South Korea were the ones \u201cfarthest along\u201d with Aramco, which had sent test cargoes totaling 40 tons of blue ammonia to Japan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aramco.com\/en\/news-media\/news\/2020\/first-blue-ammonia-shipment\">in 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Qatar be getting in on the export action?<\/strong> State-owned QatarEnergy signed agreements in September to build the world\u2019s largest blue ammonia plant \u2014 worth USD 1 bn \u2014 which is set to produce 1.2 mn tons of blue ammonia annually, some of which is destined for exports. The plant offers Qatar the chance \u201cto supply differentiated, low-carbon products and fuels to the world,\u201d CEO Saad Sherida Al Kaabi was quoted as saying in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qatarenergy.qa\/en\/MediaCenter\/Pages\/newsdetails.aspx?ItemId=3722\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ENTERPRISE EXPLAINS- Blue ammonia<\/strong> is a carrier for hydrogen, which many in industry are tipping as one of the fuels of the future for hard-to-decarbonize industries. Although not as environmentally-friendly as green ammonia, it\u2019s still seen as a source of clean energy. Unlike conventional production, blue ammonia involves the use of carbon capture, which stores the CO2 underground and prevents its release into the atmosphere. BPDB will provide administrative support alongside the state-owned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sreda.gov.bd\/\">Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Acwa Power is aggressively expanding its portfolio: <\/strong>The energy giant expanded its portfolio to 58 GW from 1 GW in under a decade, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3fba03c9-9326-4d7c-bd0c-74fdf2b2ebf8\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. Emirati renewable energy company Masdar will build <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/13a804af-a659-4152-82b2-a3c920862f2b\">a 500 MW wind farm<\/a> \u2014 Central Asia\u2019s largest \u2014 in Uzbekistan, with commercial operations expected to start by 4Q 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UAE IS ALSO MAKING MOVES in Bangladesh-<\/strong> UAE State Minister Ahmed Ali Al Sayegh met with Bangladesh\u2019s Premier Sheikh Hasina Wazed in Dhaka last week to discuss cooperation on clean energy and food security, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303106303\">WAM<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>IN OTHER SOLAR NEWS- Egypt is moving forward on one tender\u2026 <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) will launch a tender before the end of the year for 200 MW solar projects in Aswan, Amwal Al Ghad reports. The farms will be near the Benban solar park, the newspaper reports. Egypt\u2019s Electricity Ministry is aiming to award the projects to one company able to implement the entire 200 MW generation capacity. NREA is looking to complete the bid submission process and reach financial close on the project in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026And putting another on ice: <\/strong>NREA has indefinitely postponed a EGP 1.9 bn tender for a 50 MW solar plant, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/3GVOmCy\">Al Mal<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources from Egypt\u2019s Electricity Ministry. The sources cited the country\u2019s recent currency devaluation for not moving ahead on the Kom Ombo solar plant in Aswan, saying the devaluation has affected the cost of implementing the project. The NREA may renew the tender at a future date when USD rates stabilize, the sources said. <\/strong>Rolls-Royce is testing the use of hydrogen rather than conventional aviation fuels to power jet aircraft, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/media\/press-releases\/2022\/28-11-2022-rr-and-easyjet-set-new-aviation-world-first-with-successful-hydrogen-engine-run.aspx\">company<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rolls-royce.com\/media\/press-releases\/2022\/28-11-2022-rr-and-easyjet-set-new-aviation-world-first-with-successful-hydrogen-engine-run.aspx\">statement<\/a> yesterday. The tests \u2014 carried out in partnership with budget airline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.easyjet.com\/en\">easyJet<\/a> \u2014 aim to test whether a jet engine can be operated to run completely on hydrogen fuel in a bid to cut the aviation industry\u2019s emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Close, but no cigar: <\/strong>The results so far show \u200b\u200bthat jet engines using hydrogen can be started up and run at low speeds, the news outlet reports. Liquid hydrogen \u2014 which needs to be cooled to -253\u00b0C \u2014 requires four times as much space as the traditional aviation fuel used to fly the same distance. It must be stored as liquid and then turned back into gas before being burned as fuel. The aviation industry would need significantly more research and investment to develop an entirely new engine \u2014 as well as a complete redesign of the aircraft \u2014 to accommodate the use of hydrogen fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The International Civil Aviation Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/9e9b71cd-fc8b-4458-92d4-cf664402d48d\">recently agreed<\/a> to a long-term global goal to make the industry net zero by 2050, with some 184 countries \u2014 including almost all of MENA \u2014 agreeing to the goal. This would require slashing emissions, accelerating the adoption of new aircraft technologies, streamlining flight operations, and figuring out the role of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs).<\/p>\n<p><strong>GCC airlines have already hopped on the SAF wagon: <\/strong>Etihad Airways completed its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f01010d7-8133-4244-b7f9-42a9d9efcc44\">first<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f01010d7-8133-4244-b7f9-42a9d9efcc44\">SAF-fueled<\/a> flight from Tokyo last month. The airline is looking to slash its 2019 emissions by 50% by 2035 and achieve net zero by 2050, the company\u2019s VP of procurement and supply chain said, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/details\/1395303095319\">WAM<\/a>. Qatar Airways announced the purchase of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4473cd5a-d04d-4a58-8bd7-ed8a20764a0a\">5 mn gallons a year<\/a> of SAF over the next five years from US-based <a href=\"https:\/\/gevo.com\/\">Gevo<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If Rolls-Royce succeeds, this could be great news for MENA:<\/strong> The region has been ablaze with green hydrogen news as of late, including <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1879dcee-af83-45ca-8d9e-3d2b9133e55f\">Egypt signing<\/a> nine framework agreements with international power companies at COP27 to establish green hydrogen and ammonia plants to collectively <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1f8d7402-6d05-4eae-b3b0-b5bb811be7ab\">produce<\/a> up to 7.6 mn tons of green ammonia and 2.7 mn tons of hydrogen a year.
