We\u2019re just one week away from the Enterprise Climate X <\/strong><strong>Forum.<\/strong> We have more on that below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the news front, we have a tip of our had this morning to R&D teams in the region<\/strong>, as MENA climate news is dominated this morning by some exciting developments on the greentech front, starting with...<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- Could Egypt be soon getting its first chemical recycling plant <\/strong><strong>for plastics?<\/strong> Nasdaq-listed conglomerate Honeywell and Egypt\u2019s Environ Adapt \u2014 the waste treatment arm of Intro Sustainable Resources Holding \u2014 said yesterday they have inked an agreement that could see them boost plastics recycling in Egypt. The two companies will look into developing the first chemical recycling plant in Egypt using Honeywell\u2019s patented tech to turn plastic waste into recycled polymer feedstock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- A KSA-based startup is developing a system that could kill three birds with one <\/strong><strong>stone: <\/strong>Mirai Solar has created a solar panel shade screen for greenhouses that could generate electricity, help keep greenhouses cool, and preserve humidity for the plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AND- <\/strong>An agritech startup is growing gourmet mushrooms where you least expect it \u2014 Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We have chapter and verse on these stories and more in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-01\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1- Jordan is lobbying hard for a grid connection between MENA <\/strong><strong>and Europe \u2026 and wants to be a part of it: <\/strong>Jordanian Energy Minister Saleh Kharabsheh lobbied hard for MENA-Europe interconnectivity project during a meeting last week with a delegation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bgipu.org\/\">British Group Inter-Parliamentary Union<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/petra.gov.jo\/Include\/InnerPage.jsp?ID=46581&lang=en&name=en_news\">Jordan News Agency<\/a> reports. \u201cElectric connection with Europe achieves integration between stakeholder countries by supplying the continent with relatively low-cost energy generated from renewable sources,\u201d he added. Jordan wants to position itself as a regional hub for green energy exports with this project paving the way for future projects, the minister added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All lines lead to Egypt: <\/strong>With all the talk of \u201cregional integration,\u201d and nothing on building its own linkages, it sounds like Jordan could be looking to piggyback on Egypt\u2019s 2 GW <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/23\/egypt-signs-framework-agreement-with-cyprus-greece-power-linkage\/\">EuroAfrica<\/a>Interconnector project with Greece and Cyprus \u2014 or the planned EUR 3.5 bn Greece-Egypt Interconnector (<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/01\/the-war-in-ukraine-is-accelerating-plans-to-link-our-electricity-grid-to-greece-72429\/\">GREGY<\/a>), which will run almost 1.5k km from Wadi El Natroun directly across the Mediterranean to mainland Greece. Jordan already imports electricity from Egypt through a grid connection project whose capacity Kharabsheh has <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/11\/29\/egypt-jordan-agree-to-double-electricity-link-to-1-gw-59347\/\">been trying to raise<\/a> to 1 GW from 500 MW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- If it\u2019s still 2022, everyone is a hydrogen maker. <\/strong>Indian conglomerate Adani Group is exploring the feasibility of hydrogen production in Morocco and Oman, founder Gautam Adani told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d6c5ffa0-0b9b-436f-8c8b-ef4170bedfe3\">Financial Times<\/a> in an interview on Friday. The USD 200 bn Indian multinational conglomerate was eyeing investment in Moroccan projects with a 10 GW capacity <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b45de912-e322-4b2a-bf2b-88d4e1060db4\">last month<\/a> to supply clean energy to a green ammonia plant that would target exports to Europe.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\" \/>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- No<\/strong><strong> single big climate story is <\/strong><strong>dominating coverage in the international press today.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/after-disappointing-cop27-calls-grow-new-approach-fighting-climate-change-2022-11-28\/\">Reuters<\/a> looks at how some COP27 attendees are calling for deep reform of the COP process in the wake of heated debate about just how much was achieved in Sharm El Sheikh earlier this month. In a separate piece, the newswire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/cop15-why-world-needs-new-deal-protect-nature-2022-11-28\/\">has an explainer<\/a> of the upcoming conference of parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), taking place from 7-19 December in Montreal \u2014 where some 195 countries will try to reach a biodiversity agreement similar to the 2015 Paris Agreement to address climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELSEWHERE- Mazda will invest USD 10.6 bn to electrify its vehicles<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/mazda-invest-11-bln-by-2030-procure-ev-batteries-nikkei-2022-11-22\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. The two companies will explore developing in Egypt a first-of-its-kind chemical recycling plant using Honeywell\u2019s patented tech to increase the kinds of plastics that can be recycled. The pair had apparently signed the agreement at COP27, according to the statement, but had made the announcement just yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is responsible for what:<\/strong> Environ will run a feasibility study to examine market trends, feedstock availability, the specs for the proposed plant, project schedule and financial modeling. Honeywell UOP \u2014 the Honeywell subsidiary that develops tech for hydrocarbon and manufacturing industries \u2014 will work with Environ to roll out its UpCycle Process Technology in Egypt, providing technical and commercial information and other kinds of support, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what\u2019s the big deal?<\/strong> This UpCycle Process Technology recycles a wider range of waste plastics than processes, including colored and flexible plastics, multilayered packaging and polystyrene, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honeywell.com\/us\/en\/press\/2021\/11\/honeywell-introduces-revolutionary-plastics-recycling-technology-to-drive-a-circular-plastics-economy\">Honeywell UOP\u2019s website<\/a> notes. The tech \u2014 developed and launched in November 2021 \u2014 can lessen the need for fossil fuels in creating new plastic products while allowing for \u201chundreds of cycles of recycling,\u201d the website adds. The company \u2014 supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.kaust.edu.sa\/\">King Abdullah University of Science and Technology<\/a> \u2014 co-developed its installation mechanism with German shade screen specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/novavert.com\/\">Novavert<\/a> to accommodate greenhouses of different sizes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work? <\/strong> The semi-transparent foldable and retractable PV shade screen allows a fraction of the light hitting the screen to be absorbed in the solar cell to generate electricity, while the remaining sunlight is allowed through and dispersed into the greenhouse. The folding system enables the shade screen to be drawn back to control sunlight and optimized control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does it matter?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi.nsw.gov.au\/agriculture\/horticulture\/greenhouse\/structures-and-technology\/screens\">Shade<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpi.nsw.gov.au\/agriculture\/horticulture\/greenhouse\/structures-and-technology\/screens\">screens<\/a> reduce the heat load in a greenhouse, maintaining humidity around the plants and reducing stress from excessive sun and heat in areas with high solar radiation. The shade screen keeps the PV glass-less and light, and protects the panel from dirt and heat in the environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It doesn\u2019t stop with greenhouses: <\/strong>Mirai\u2019s technology can reportedly generate electricity from shaded parking spots in car parks to recharge electric vehicles, and <a href=\"https:\/\/miraisolar.com\/#application\">the foldable screens<\/a>
