wonderful people. <\/strong>As we approach the weekend, we\u2019re looking forward to some uninterrupted football after the World Cup delivered another surprise with the defeat of another favorite \u2014 this time Germany \u2014 at the hands of Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And if you\u2019re one of the five Americans that watch the sport, the fun starts early as it is Thanksgiving today.<\/strong> We wish all our American readers a happy holiday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Otherwise, it\u2019s just nonstop green hydrogen: <\/strong>If you couldn\u2019t tell, green hydrogen has been the theme of the month. And yesterday it was full on, with new projects \u2014 both in the region and outside it \u2014 being announced, projects and policies being studied, and even the next lineup of climate events have been fixated on this wunder molecule. Let\u2019s get to it\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY-<\/strong> <strong>Saudi Arabia\u2019s Acwa Power wants to build a USD 7 bn green hydrogen and derivatives production project in Thailand.<\/strong> The news comes a few days after Saudi Arabia signed a number of MoUs with Thailand. The plant\u2019s output will be used for local consumption and export.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Egypt is mapping out land for 4 GW wind farms to power all the projects the country signed for during COP27<\/strong>, the local press reported yesterday. Egypt had signed nine framework agreements with international companies at the summit to establish green hydrogen and ammonia plants in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^We have more on these stories and others in the news well, below. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is also looking eastbound: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker met with a delegation from <a href=\"https:\/\/chinaenergyportal.org\/en\/\">Energy China<\/a> to explore areas of cooperation on green hydrogen, electricity, and renewables, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3gxX4fu\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- <\/strong><strong>Lekela is joining the Egypt hydrogen party \u201csoon\u201d: <\/strong>It looks like we might be hearing of a new hydrogen project in the near future coming from Lekela Power, if statements by its CEO Chris Antonopoulous to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-11-22\/lekela-forges-ahead-with-senegal-battery-plant-eyes-hydrogen-projects\">Bloomberg<\/a> are anything to go by. After noting that the company was interested in partnering on green hydrogen, Antonopoulous noted that \u201cin Egypt, in particular, you\u2019re probably going to hear very soon from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Antonopoulous had said <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/11\/21\/lekela-earmarks-usd-2-bn-to-grow-its-egyptian-renewables-portfolio-88313\/\">earlier this week<\/a> that the company was looking into green hydrogen production in the country, in partnership with the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. The move comes as part of the USD 2 bn earmarked for Egypt\u2019s green economy that was enabled in part by its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/19\/infinity-will-become-africas-largest-renewables-player-through-lekela-acquisition-76096\/\">acquisition<\/a> by regional renewables giant Infinity and the Africa Finance Corporation. But what are they?<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s Neom invested USD 175 mn as part of a series E investment in German electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle maker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/\">Volocopter<\/a>, the companies announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neom.com\/en-us\/newsroom\/neom-invests-in-volocopter\">statement<\/a> earlier this month. The investment sees Neom take a \u201csignificant stake\u201d in Volocopter, and will see the two expand their strategic partnership to roll out an \u201cadvanced air mobility industry\u201d in KSA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neom has some big plans in store for eVTOLs:<\/strong> Neom and Volocopter signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/newsroom\/neom-volocopter-jv-evtol-network\/\">joint venture<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/newsroom\/neom-volocopter-jv-evtol-network\/\">agreement<\/a> late last year to design, implement, and operate a tailored and customized public vertical mobility system in the smart city. The JV is the sole operator of initial public transit routes across Neom, enabling an open eVTOL ecosystem for mobility services like logistics, emergency response, and tourism.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- What are eVTOLs and how do they work? <\/strong>eVTOLS are drone-like aircraft that use electric propulsion and large omnidirectional fans to allow them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mane.co.uk\/news\/what-are-evtols-288010\/\">to takeoff vertically<\/a> and to act like air taxis. They are meant to be energy efficient, quiet, environmentally friendly, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/flying-cab-drivers-wanted\">eventually pilotless<\/a>. Beyond their applications as air taxis, the vehicles are expected to be able to operate on an inter-city basis and even be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spartan.edu\/news\/what-is-evtol\/\">used for cargo shipping<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The industry is taking off (pun intended):<\/strong> The global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alliedmarketresearch.com\/urban-air-mobility-uam-market-A06443\">urban air mobility market<\/a> was valued at USD 2.3 bn in 2021 and is projected to reach USD 30.7 bn by 2031. KSA\u2019s national flag carrier Saudia recently <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/83e28974-c493-421c-b05a-4b347d8d69fb\">signed<\/a> an agreement with Lilium to purchase 100 electric jets, while UAE-based charter flight operator Falcon Aviation Services <a href=\"https:\/\/eveairmobility.com\/eve-and-falcon-aviation-services-announce-partnership-to-introduce-evtol-flights-in-dubai\/\">is buying<\/a> up to 35 flying taxis from electric aircraft company <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.eveairmobility.com\/\">Eve Holding<\/a>, with deliveries expected to start in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The caveat: <\/strong>eVTOLS require huge amounts of electricity at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Volocopter-WhitePaper-1-01.pdf\">take off and landing<\/a>, and need batteries to be swapped and cool in between flights. German eVTOL manufacturer Lilium is aiming to have its aircraft range of 250 km with <a href=\"https:\/\/verticalmag.com\/features\/lilium-evtol-batteries-what-we-know\/\">a battery system<\/a> that charges to 80% in 15 minutes and 100% within 30 minutes. Petalite <a href=\"https:\/\/petalite.co.uk\/high-capacity-evtol\/\">estimates<\/a> that the vehicles need high-capacity 600kW fast-charging capability to serve their duty cycles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neom has an advantage:<\/strong> Fast-charging capabilities require city-scale charging infrastructure (which can be costly) if the use of eVTOLS is to be scaled up, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/industries\/automotive-and-assembly\/our-insights\/to-take-off-flying-vehicles-first-need-places-to-land\">McKinsey report<\/a>. But with a city being built from scratch like Neom, this can be factored into the design, CEO at Volocopter said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How many vehicles will be in the skies? <\/strong>Neom and Volocopter agreed on an initial order of 10 VoloCity passenger and 5 VoloDrone logistics aircrafts to commence flight operation within the next 2 years, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volocopter.com\/newsroom\/neom-volocopter-jv-evtol-network\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Neom\u2019s ambitious plans: <\/strong>Electric air taxis are key to implementing a \u201cmulti-modal mobility system powered by 100% renewable energy,\u201d according to its website.
