Neither party put a price tag on the value of the transactions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Qatar inaugurated the world\u2019s largest electric bus depot<\/strong> ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which runs 20 November through 18 December.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/\">BP<\/a><\/strong><strong> is acquiring US-based renewable natural gas (RNG) <\/strong><strong>producer <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archaeaenergy.com\/\">Archaea Energy<\/a><\/strong><strong> for some USD 4.1 bn in equity and debt<\/strong>, the two firms announced (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/news-and-insights\/press-releases\/bp-accelerates-and-expands-in-bioenergy-agreeing-to-buy-leading-us-biogas-company-archaea-energy.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.archaeaenergy.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/35\/archaea-energy-to-be-acquired-by-bp-for-approximately-4-1\">here<\/a>). BP will pay USD 26.00 per Archaea share \u2014 a 38% premium to Archaea\u2019s average share price over the past month. The move comes as BP looks to accelerate the growth of its biofuels business as it tries to diversify away from fossil fuels. The two want to close the transaction by the end of this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>RNG is upgraded biogas \u2014 gas produced from as organic matter decays. It can be captured from garbage dumps, wastewater treatment plants, food production, food waste, and animal popp, among other sources. We\u2019ll be back with the results in a couple of weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COUNTDOWN TO COP (17 days to go)- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some 150 electric buses are coming to COP, courtesy of GM and Mansour: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gm.com\/\">General Motors (GM)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/almansour.com.eg\/\">Al Mansour Automotive<\/a> signed an MoU with Egypt\u2019s Foreign Ministry to provide 150 EVs to transport COP27 participants around Sharm El Sheikh. The two are COP27\u2019s exclusive mobility partners, they said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/10\/GM_Mansour_COP27.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE<\/strong><strong> STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>US President Joe Biden has doled out USD 2.8 bn in grants to spur electric vehicle <\/strong><strong>manufacturing <\/strong><strong>and domestic mineral production<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/10\/19\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-driving-u-s-battery-manufacturing-and-good-paying-jobs\/\">White House statement<\/a> yesterday. Twenty manufacturing and processing companies will receive the grants to domestically extract and process lithium, graphite and nickel \u2014 in short, minerals needed to produce EV batteries. The projects of the selected companies will \u201cdevelop enough lithium to supply over 2 mn electric vehicles annually\u201d, the statement reads. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/us-awards-28-billion-ev-battery-grid-projects-2022-10-19\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/19\/biden-awards-2point8-billion-for-electric-vehicle-battery-manufacturing-.html\">CNBC<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shocker: Global climate goals aren\u2019t cutting it.<\/strong> The nationally determined contributions (NDCs) of the Paris Agreement signatories need to be six times as ambitious than they were as of September, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3g8P1F8\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wri.org\/\">World Resources Institute<\/a> published Wednesday. The signatories\u2019 current pledges would reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by only 7% from 2019 by 2030. That figure needs to hit 43% to align with the Paris Agreement, which aims to curb global temperature increases at 1.5\u00b0C. (<a href=\"https:\/\/bloom.bg\/3yULLnz\">Bloomberg<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/reut.rs\/3ETQZUh\">Reuters<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>One bright spot: The EU is making strides on its renewables goals. <\/strong>The EU generated a record 12% of its energy needs from solar and 13% from wind energy between May and August this year, saving the bloc an estimated EUR 99 bn, the European Commission said in its <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/10\/3420.pdf\">2022 State of the Energy Union report (pdf)<\/a>. The bloc also increased the share of renewables in its <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/news\/drop-gas-consumption-and-increase-renewable-energy-generation-q2-2022-2022-oct-14_en\">electricity mix<\/a> to 43% in 2Q 2022, compared to 36% from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022 will likely be a record year for the continent\u2019s PV market, <\/strong>according to the report. Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7f08c548-f1f0-4af6-b4af-89e38536c013\">led<\/a> a EUR 250 mn series D investment round for Paris-based biotech company Innovafeed, and also completed a landmark EUR 2.4 bn <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d26e3e11-d63e-49eb-8c4b-9cd96ab41746\">acquisition<\/a> in major German utilities provider RWE in a debt-to-equity swap.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This isn\u2019t the SWF\u2019s first renewables acquisition this year:<\/strong> Mubadala, has assets under management of about USD 284 bn, was part of a BlackRock-led consortium that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mubadala.com\/en\/news\/tata-power-create-indias-most-comprehensive-renewable-energy-platform\">agreed to<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mubadala.com\/en\/news\/tata-power-create-indias-most-comprehensive-renewable-energy-platform\">inv<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mubadala.com\/en\/news\/tata-power-create-indias-most-comprehensive-renewable-energy-platform\">est USD 525<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mubadala.com\/en\/news\/tata-power-create-indias-most-comprehensive-renewable-energy-platform\">mn<\/a> in Indian renewable energy firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tatapowerrenewables.com\/\">Tata Power Renewables<\/a> in April. The 400 sqkm Lusail bus terminal has capacity for nearly 500 buses and is the latest addition to the Transport Ministry\u2019s public bus infrastructure program, which is being rolled out to provide greener transportation during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/fifaplus\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/qatar2022\">World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Officially the world\u2019s largest:<\/strong> The terminal received a Guinness World Records certificate for being the world\u2019s largest electric bus depot, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepeninsulaqatar.com\/article\/19\/10\/2022\/lusail-bus-depot-in-qatar-enters-guinness-world-records\">Qatari media<\/a> reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Almost 250 buses can charge at the same time:<\/strong> The depot has 248 electric charging stations for e-buses, as well as 24 stations for bus rapid transit (BRT) e-buses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It appears to be the first solar-powered bus depot in MENA: <\/strong>The buildings will be powered through 4 MW of solar power generated every day through some 11k solar PV panels, making it the first solar-powered bus depot in the region, Qatar\u2019s Transport Minister Jassim Al Sulaiti said. The facility won\u2019t be fully powered by the sun\u2019s rays though, with the ministry <a href=\"https:\/\/dohanews.co\/qatar-home-to-regions-first-ever-solar-powered-bus-depot\/\">saying last year<\/a> that a power station will also provide conventional energy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is one part of a wider bus electrification program:<\/strong> Under the government\u2019s public bus infrastructure program, eight bus stations, four depots and more than 650 charging points are being set up, in part to support transportation during the World Cup. The agreement was signed by European Commission deputy head Frans Timmermans and Morocco\u2019s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita in Rabat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/newsletters\/2022-10-18\/eu-sets-out-its-new-energy-intervention-package\">on Tuesday<\/a>, and is the first of its kind that the EU has agreed with a partner country, the EU Commission said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What we know so far:<\/strong> There are few details about what the partnership will entail, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/10\/19\/morocco-and-eu-sign-deal-to-boost-cooperation-on-renewable-energy\/\/\">AFP<\/a> quoted the MoU as saying it will \u201cfoster the transition to a decarbonised industry through investment in green technology, renewable energy production, sustainable mobility, and clean production in industry.\u201d It will also include developing joint projects in clean energy, green finance and a circular economy, as well as sharing best practices, Timmermans was quoted in a 2021 EU statement as saying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The EU is desperate to fulfill its energy needs through MENA:<\/strong> The EU has been scrambling to find new energy supplies from the MENA region to replace Russian oil and gas whose supplies have been heavily curbed on the back of the war in Ukraine. The bloc has been looking to close agreements with gas exporters in the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/16\/egypt-israel-and-the-eu-sign-gas-export-agreement-73872\/\">Eastern Mediterranean<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f225909c-07a1-42dc-a2a1-15f8c4b136bb\">the Gulf<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/euobserver.com\/world\/156263\">North Africa<\/a> as it faces the loss of most of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/how-europe-can-cut-natural-gas-imports-from-russia-significantly-within-a-year\">155 bn cubic meters<\/a> of Russian gas it imported last year as well as Russian crude which it will begin to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/when-eu-embargo-comes-where-will-russia-sell-its-crude-oil-2022-09-23\/\">embargo in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And Morocco's ambitious renewables game aims to export energy to Europe: <\/strong>Morocco <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/52aefc63-82e3-42e3-8afc-960461fa5288\">plans to generate 10.5 GW<\/a> of solar and wind energy from just its Xlinks renewable energy project by 2030. This far outstrips regional rival Egypt\u2019s Benban solar park\u2019s 1.8 GW. When completed, the project is expected to supply 8% of the UK\u2019s electricity needs by exporting 3.6 GW of electricity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It will also help the EU import natural gas from Nigeria:<\/strong> Morocco, Nigeria and Ecowas last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanews.com\/2022\/09\/16\/nigeria-morocco-gas-pipeline-project-takes-off\/\/\">signed an MoU<\/a> to establish a USD 25 bn natural gas pipeline linking the two countries that will enable Nigeria to export gas to West Africa and Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The agreement has been in the works for over a year: <\/strong>Morocco and the EU announced their intention to set up a green partnership in 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It expands the approach of the European Green Pact:<\/strong> \u201cThe Green Partnership with Morocco will be one of the EU\u2019s first initiatives with a partner country that will aim to advance the external dimension of the <a href=\"https:\/\/home.kpmg\/xx\/en\/home\/insights\/2021\/11\/european-green-deal-policy-guide.html\">European Green [Pact]<\/a> through action on the ground,\u201d noted the June 2021 EU statement. There, I fell in love with building companies from scratch. Coupled with my deep interest in climate change, I partnered up with my co-founder Amr Helmy (<a href=\"https:\/\/eg.linkedin.com\/in\/amr-helmy-8a69a571\">Linkedin<\/a>)\u00a0to build Shift EV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We built Shift EV to address the electric vehicle gap in Egypt and emerging markets<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What we do is convert delivery fleets into EVs in a matter of days \u2014 at no up-front cost. <\/strong>We developed a retrofitting process utilizing locally manufactured batteries that can turn any conventional vehicle into an EV.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It takes less than a few hours per vehicle to do the conversion.<\/strong> We take an assembly-line approach to convert fleets of minivans and tricycles and will soon do pickup trucks and microbuses\u2014 which are both essential to Egypt\u2019s last-mile delivery and passenger fleets \u2014 into EVs. The conversion time goes down with every production cycle by 20-30%. I think we can easily get below an hour per vehicle. That goal is within reach.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pushing down carbon emissions:<\/strong> When you switch from gasoline to electricity for a minivan, you offset 0.3 kilograms of CO2 per km. Our vehicles have traveled around 200k kms, and expect to cover between 750k-1 mn kilometers by the end of 2022. We also limit carbon emissions by retrofitting cars instead of manufacturing vehicles from scratch. Steel chassis produce emissions at an average of nearly 18 tonnes of carbon dioxide per vehicle. By retrofitting vehicles you give them a second life and extend their time on the road while eliminating emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We raised a total of USD 9 mn during our series A funding round<\/strong>. The round was funded by Union Square Ventures, Algebra Ventures, Wamda, and the Oman Technology Fund.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We used the funds to scale our production and deploy more vehicles. <\/strong>In 4Q2022, we're going into large scale serial production. For anyone who works in manufacturing automotives, they know that production ramp is when the magic really happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Future funding plans:<\/strong> We're probably going to be raising again by the end of this year or the beginning of 2023 to expand our retrofitting rate to thousands of vehicles per year. Future funding will fuel our expansion plans and help us make inroads in other countries. We want to show that electric retrofitting doesn't just work for one country or one chassis type.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lobbying the gov\u2019t and financial institutions: <\/strong>In the near term, we want to launch the retrofitting industry and turn it into an industry with full regulatory framework and end to end financing. We're operationalizing with our financial partners a model similar to the power purchase agreement (PPA) model in renewable power, where customers pay off savings and not upfront. We're currently doing this with our customers and partner financial institutions. We're also focused on upping the amount of kilometers covered by the retrofitted vehicles we deploy. We worked with the Industry and Trade Ministry to develop a new industrial code for retrofitting technology because it's separate from traditional automotive activity and we've been issued the first industrial register. The Interior Ministry also set up a new process to license electro-fitted vehicles which is a massive milestone for the industry and for us as a company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expansion plans:<\/strong> In the medium term, we will be focusing on scaling to deploy thousands of vehicles. We\u2019re also planning on expanding into a couple of African countries. We think that\u2019s a huge potential and relatively simple from a customer and manufacturing standpoint given the shared customer base and current trade treaties - most of our manufacturing is planned in Egypt. If we scale to the tens of thousands, I think we're going to open the path accelerate the transition to electric mobility by decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Long term goals:<\/strong> As utilization of electric vehicles continues to grow, there's going to be a need to start replacing batteries on existing vehicles. We want to make batteries a subscription for every single EV. Our long term strategy is to keep EVs on the road longer. EVs are often retired after 10 years of operation due to batteries\u2019 loss of range. What we want to do is replace these faulty batteries to make it easy for the consumer to continue operating the vehicle with a very low cost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>To relax and switch off from work, I travel, build stuff, and connect with friends and family.<\/strong> You'd be surprised how little extra time one gets during the production ramp [laughs], but when I do have some time, I love to travel. I'm between the US and Cairo. I spend a lot of time in New York. Travelling enables me to see things in different ways and stay immersed in two cultures that I care deeply about.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m a huge nerd; the last great thing I read was <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Dune-Frank-Herbert\/dp\/0441172717\">Dune<\/a><\/strong><strong> by Frank Herbert<\/strong>. I recognize that reading Dune at my age is a little bit too late, but I was blown away. I don't think I have had a book in my hand that I couldn't leave like Dune for a while. There are seven volumes. It gets weird towards the end. So, I wouldn't recommend the last couple of volumes, but the first three volumes are so spot on and so interesting.
